Mookie Betts development?
Hey to all the other Red Sox players out there. Currently in my first play and was wondering how Mookie has turned out for you? I'm in my 4th year (2018) and he has been a little disappointing. Farrell gave him regular playing time in 15,16, and 17 but in his best year he was a .275 hitter and never cracked 10 hrs. now he splits time with a speed/defense guy in the outfield. Has he developed into something you would be happy with as a Sox fan in any of your plays?
On the plus side, Jackie Bradley Jr is a stud. 290 average or better in my 3+ seasons, 15HR+ in all 3 seasons. Almost like Betts and JBJs potential were switched in my play |

I always trade him, he'll never be an elite defensive CF, and you have Pedroia at 2B. Margot usually turns out OK so you don't wanna block him. Even if you have trading on very hard you can flip Mookie for some nice assets, I usually go for Norris and Donaldson, will have to add some prospects but worth it.

Margot never works out for me. I usualyl keep Betts and he's done reasonably well, never a star but a solid, not great, player.

If Margot doesn't work out then you still have Jackie Bradley. I really hate not having an elite defensive CF, and for Fenway, having an elite defensive LF saves a lot of runs too. I almost always trade Castillo, Betts, Sandoval, and Ramirez at the beginning. Betts has speed which the Sox lack, and combined with his eye, makes a great lead-off man. So I look for someone like Gentry/Billy Burns/Alex Gordon to replace them.
I think about trading Bogaerts too but his bat is too strong and I've been able to construct a top defensive IF with him, Pedroia, and a stud 3B like Donaldson. The #1 priority at the start of the game is pitching, as is in reality, and Mookie is too good of a trade chip to keep imo. Last edited by bly08; 04-20-2015 at 03:02 PM. |

If he develops into a solid player then you should be very happy because that's what he's supposed to be.

i've never played as the RS, but Betts regularly appears on the leader board for my leagues in 2016. IIRC, the OOTP 2015 version of Betts never panned out.

I'm up to 2021 and I've kept Mookie. He's turned out to be a pretty useful utility man. Had him in IF and OF. Never spectacular, but handy to have around. Shipped Bogaerts and Bradley Jr. out in the first year.

General rule of thumb: don't trade away anyone named Mookie

I'd keep JB Jr. no matter what. Elite defensive CFs are very rare and he's developed into a 6-7 WAR player for me in several saves after a year in AAA.

For me Pedroia becomes a one star player within two years so I just end up moving Betts to second base. He is usually a consistent .750-.800 OPS guy with a .350+ OBP.

I'm almost done my 2015 season/fantasy league and I have Mookie as my leadoff man and CF (sometimes 2B). He's hitting around .300 and has stolen 40 bases so far and I'm in mid-August and he's played very well defensively too. I plan on keeping him for the long haul. Since I'm playing a fantasy season I have some big bats hitting behind him in Nelson Cruz, Eric Hosmer, Manny Machado, and Sandoval (as DH with Machado playing 3rd). Domonic Brown is my other starting OF and it's been a very good season so far (in 2nd place about 2 games behind the Rays and first in the wildcard standings). Mookie has scored a boatload of runs with these guys hitting behind him and I definitely plan on keeping him for the long haul.
