I currently have 907 BB's in my career, here's hoping I'll top 1,000 this season! I also cracked 500 steals and 1,000 runs this season whoo Also 1 triple shy of 100.

Just reminded me of the 17yo Willie Young vs 23yo Vic Ullom competition. Vic got better while Willie was stuck in the mud talent-wise.

Leonard Davie & Woody Woodworth both collected their 2000th hit this month. Davie did it on July 19th against Detroit's Harley Melzer. Woody did it 2 days later against fellow ancestor George Bowers of the Indians.

22-year-old Jack Schoonover of the Giants threw a 2-hit shutout of the Pirates.

Longtime Yankees 2B/CF Swervin' Evrin Skjerly was traded to the Phillies on July 30th. In return, the Yankees got two prospects, including fellow ancestor George Young. Young was immediately promoted to New York's major league roster, but he has not yet played in a game. Before the trade, Young was hitting .265 with 14 HR in Single-A. As for Skjerly, he becomes the Phillies' leadoff hitter and continues to play CF.

Despite this being a home game for the American League, it is fair to say that there was a large majority of Phillies fans in the arena. That was evident in the top of the 1st when Phillies first baseman William Suggs hit a bases loaded single with two outs off Jethro Lee to score the game's first runs. The hit drew a loud cheer from the Philadelphia crowd. In the top of the 6th, Suggs led off with a single off Cleveland pitcher Zolly Schoeter, and Cardinals catcher Herman Dunkel followed him with a 2-run homerun.

In the bottom of the 7th, Pirates pitcher Tex Blakemore walked the first two batters he faced. After getting two outs, he then walked another batter to load the bases. Washington's Carl Kahle reached on an error by Reds second baseman Pee Wee Osborne, allowing the AL's only run to score. Blakemore got pinch hitting Tigers outfielder Ricky Osterholt to pop up and end the inning. The AL got a runner on base in both the 8th and 9th innings but could not score.

August 1943

The Red Sox continue to stun the AL. They went 17-12 this month and are hanging on to the league lead. Washington, the heavy preseason favorites, dropped another 2 games back in the standings, while St. Louis is a half-game behind them. The Red Sox are the only franchise to have never had back-to-back winning seasons in their 42-year history. Their one pennant and World Series victory came in 1918, a season shortened by World War I. It is only fitting then that they make another pennant run in a season where so many players have been lost to World War II. They have scored the most runs in the major leagues, but that has masked the fact that their pitching staff is one of the worst in baseball. Can they hold on for one more month? Their team ERA of 3.79 sounds great but is just 12th in the majors. The lowered offense this season has allowed them to get by scoring 4.68 runs per game and allowing just 4.24.

In the NL, Brooklyn's dominant pitching has finally begun to separate them from the rest of the NL. The Dodgers went 18-10 this month, have the best record in the majors and own a 8.5 game lead over second place Pittsburgh. Brooklyn's pitching staff has an astounding 2.61 ERA and has allowed just 389 runs this season. Their offense is just 8th in the majors with 520 runs scored, but the 139 fewer runs allowed by their pitchers makes a huge impact. Brooklyn is struggling with a .244 team average, but they draw a lot of walks and lead the majors in stolen bases. The top of their rotation makes a major difference with Frank Smith (23-6, 1.62), Remmy Paul (22-6, 2.47) and Max Baxter (16-11, 2.93). That is why they are favored to win the pennant and likely the World Series, depending on who they face.

Player losses to the military have taken some of the competition out of Giants-Dodgers confrontations, but the brawling has not stopped. The two teams played 10 times this month, and on August 1st, a duster aimed at New York's Dale Lamberty by Dodger pitcher Max Baxter cleared both benches. The Giants won the game 4-3, but Brooklyn won 7 of the 10 games they played this month and won the season series 15-5.

Former Senators and Pirates outfielder Sam Kass began a war bond drive this month in hopes of helping raise money for the US war effort. Below is one poster recently released with Kass's image on it. He hopes to recruit some current major leaguers, especially those too old to be drafted, to help him in this cause.

That's pretty shocking, but NY has zero 1b prospects and their two natural 1b on the active roster are 38 & 39 y/o. But Gramps has lots of work to do before he can prove worthy of being on the Yanks active roster. His base stealing instincts might get him in the game as a PR here and there, but he's clearly out of his league right now with the bat.

Also, NY is now down to 3 OFs. 4 if you count starting 2b Kuhn. I wouldn't be surprised if they had to grab another OF at some point and then send Grampa George down. Then again, they have too many pitchers on the active roster, so maybe Gramps would survive if NY picked up an OF.

Grand-Unc Willie Young seems to be under achiving in his first year as the starting 1b for the Pirates - .225 is nothing to brag about for sure. But at least he's getting a chance to play finally.

September 1943

Brooklyn went on a 13-game winning streak to seal up the NL pennant, even though they did not officially clinch until 6 days after the streak ended. During the streak, which began on August 28th, Brooklyn won 6 games against Cincinnati, 3 each versus the Braves and Cubs, and one against the Cardinals before St. Louis stopped the streak with a 1-0 win on September 12th. After winning their next game against St. Louis, Brooklyn was surprisingly swept by the Braves, including a miraculous 11-10 11th inning defeat where Boston came back after being down 10-0 in the bottom of the 9th.

The AL race went down to the last day of the season. Washington played their last 9 games of the season against the other two contenders - the Red Sox and Browns. Before playing the first of those 9 games, Boston led Washington by 1 game and St. Louis by 3. The Senators dropped 2 of 3 to St. Louis while Boston dropped 2 of 3 to Detroit. Washington then won 2 of 3 against the Red Sox while St. Louis lost 2 of 3 to the A's and slipped one game from elimination. The final series of the season had Washington at St. Louis and Boston at the White Sox. Boston won their first game while Washington lost to the Browns, giving Boston a 1 game lead. Both Boston and Washington won their next games, meaning the Senators had to hope for a tie. On the final day of the season, Washington led the Browns 4-1 in the 7th inning, but the Browns scored one in that inning and tied the game with 2 runs in the 9th. Both teams scored 2 runs in the 11th, but St. Louis pulled out the win in the 12th on a 2-out double by pinch hitter Perry Blair, ending Washington's season. It would not have mattered since the Red Sox went on to sweep Chicago, but the Browns got some satisfaction from knowing their two key wins essentially ended Washington's season.

In one of the more odd moments in baseball, five hitters reached 2000 career hits this season, and three of them got that milestone hit against the same pitcher, Detroit's Harley Melzer. On July 19th, he gave up Chicago catcher Leonard Davie's 2000th hit. He did the same for Washington's John Shears on August 25th. Then on September 14th, he gave up that same milestone hit to New York's Ping Hung.

The season finished with attendance down 13 percent from the last season. The Dodgers and Yankees, both good for a million fans in contending years, each dropped below 700,000. Only the Phillies, under new ownership, had a significant increase from 230,000 to 467,000. NL attendance fell from 8.9 million to 7.7 million.

World Series

There is a joke going around Boston about how the Red Sox can only win the pennant when the United States is at war. After winning their only pennant and World Series in the war-shortened 1918 season, Boston finds themselves back in the Series in yet another war-effected season. With so much unrest in Europe and around the world, perhaps Boston will become a powerhouse and have back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in franchise history.

Just how Boston won the AL pennant is anyone's guess. Most people outside of Beantown will tell you Washington, and even St. Louis, simply choked. To their credit, Boston did score the most runs and hit the most homeruns in the majors this season. Their offense was led by first baseman Jessie "Bing" Holt, who was the only major leaguer to record over 100 RBI this season. He was in Triple Crown contention but finished second in homeruns after leading the AL all season and finished 4th in the batting race, although there was little chance of him catching Washington's Blake Crocitto.

Boston's pitching staff is a mystery. They allowed the 6th most runs, 3rd most walks and 2nd most homeruns in the majors. Their 3.72 team ERA was 6th worst. However, Rusty Canter was a pleasant surprise, remaining healthy and leading the team in wins and ERA.

Speaking of pitching, look no further than NL champion Brooklyn if you want to find one of the most dominant rotations in history. Certainly some of their success can be attributed to the losses of many players to the war, but Frank Smith, Remmy Paul, Max Baxter and Stephen Dzurik were nearly unhittable this season. Brooklyn posted an amazing 2.62 team ERA, but their offense struggled at times with a .247 team avaerage. That offense did lead baseball in walks and stolen bases and finished 6th in the majors in runs scored.

My Prediction: Congratulations to the Red Sox on winning just the 2nd pennant in team history, but they are about to get a wake-up call. Brooklyn looked nearly unstoppable over the final two months of the season and Boston has little chance to stop them now. Boston's only hope is a lot of offense, but that will be very tough against this Dodgers rotation. I expect Brooklyn to win in 5 games.

No sooner do I wish Doc luck in finishing in the Top 10 in BB than he plays his way out of the Reds line-up in June despite hitting .303/.429/.394/.823 in 40+ PAs. Reduced to bench play, he promptly stunk up the joint in July and probably can kiss off his career.

The Red Sox bullpen took over and allowed just 5 baserunners the rest of the game. Meanwhile, the Boston offense scored 5 runs off the amazing Frank Smith. Slugging first baseman Jessie Holt tied the game with a solo homerun in the 3rd, and Boston took the lead with a pair of triples and a pair of singles in the 4th.

Dodgers 5 - Red Sox 2: Brooklyn and Remmy Paul were cruising along with a 2-0 lead until relief pitcher Steve Duncalf loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 9th. A single by Howard Sheridan tied the game with 2 runs and the teams went to extra innings. In the top of the 9th, Brooklyn tagged reliever Sloppy Mosich for 3 runs en route to their first win of the Series. After the game, the news got even worse for Boston as they discovered starting pitcher Vance Marx will miss the rest of the series with a torn bicep. This makes Boston's already thin pitching staff a major liability.

Red Sox 0 - Dodgers 5: Pitcher Max Baxter ruled this day with a 3-hit shutout. Young Red Sox pitcher Hill Basford never stood a chance after allowing 2 runs in the 1st and 3rd innings.

Red Sox 2 - Dodgers 3: Frank Smith and Sloppy Mosich hooked up for a scoreless duel until Brooklyn scored 2 runs in the 8th. Boston countered with 2 runs off Smith in the 9th, sending the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Brooklyn first baseman Dennis Kitterman hit a 2-out triple off James Basford that scored Oscar Vancini from first base, winning the game.

Red Sox 0 - Dodgers 1: Remmy Paul surpassed Frank Smith as THE pitcher in Brooklyn, if only for the time being. We all know how World Series heroics can cement a player in legend forever. After a great Game 2 performace, Paul came out again and limited the Sox to just 4 hits in a complete game shutout. Rusty Canter was forced to pitch, and even with his shoulder not yet 100%, he held Brooklyn to 1 run and 3 hits. Unfortunately, he goes down as the loser of the game. The only run came in the first inning, when Johnny "Speedy" Perly drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored when the second batter of the game, Mickey McWhorter singled to right field.


Remmy Paul was named World Series MVP after going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 17 IP.
