Monday, April 12, 1954 JOLIET BACK ON TRACK, RALLIES PAST COYOTES IN NIPL After losing its first game of the season, the Joliet Green Giants got right back on track yesterday afternoon with a come-from-behind victory over the Dutton Coyotes 6-4 on their home diamond Joliet Stadium... in the other North Island Premier League game, it was won in the ninth by Theodore 7-6 over the New Yerby Yankees. |

Monday, April 12, 1954 KOFA, KINSTON NOW TIED ATOP NORTH ISLAND ELITE LEAGUE The two best teams in the North Island Elite League clashed Sunday afternoon in Kinston with the visiting Kofa Kings claiming the victory 7-5... the Kings and the Firebirds are now tied for the league league with 5-2 marks... Jackson got splendid pitching to blank the Avalon Valiants 4-0... they are now tied for the bottom spot in the standings at 2-5. |

Monday, April 12, 1954 1ST PLACE MARINERS AND 2ND PLACE CARDS SKY-HIGH IN SOUTH ISLAND PRIMARY STANDINGS Both the first place Mystic Mariners and the runner-up Claiborne Cardinals are enjoying this season in the South Island Primary League... they are running neck-and-neck for the top spot in the standings... league-leading Mystic destroyed last place Des Allemands this past weekend 11-1, while second place Claiborne tripped up third place Bayou Bleu 5-4 in an 11-frame cliffhanger... the Mariners (6-1) have a one-game edge on the Cardinals (5-2). |

MY LIFE IN 1954
EC's Scoring More in '54 EC loved George Mikan and the Minneapolis Lakers when I was growning up... loved the Cardinals in baseball... and the LA Rams in the NFL... and of course, my Mobile Bears and New Orleans Pelicans... in the 1953-54 season Minneapolis won their third straight NBA title and fifth in six seasons, paced by Mikan, who averaged 18.1 points in the Finals ... the Syracuse Nationals gave them fits this year in a seven-game series... however, the Lakers had too much on the boards with big men, George Mikan, Clyde Lovellette and Vern Mikkelsen... big edge in rebounds... Adolph Schayes was the Nats' big man, but he couldn't do it all by himself... actually the Lakers got a little lucky in the series... Schayes only played sparingly in the first five games... he must have been injured... he averaged only 9.3 points in the seven games... during the regular season he scored 17.1 points per game... in the previous round against Bob Cousy, Bill Sharman and the Boston Celtics, Schayes' average was 20.0 a game... but Paul Seymour had a good series for Syracuse... he led the Nats in scoring with a 15.9 average in the NBA Finals. Minneapolis won the opener at home 79-68... Lovellette (16) and Mikan (15) were top scorers... outrebounded the Nats 42-36... Schayes didn't score in 6 minutes of play. Syracuse held on for a 62-60 road win in game two... outrebounding the Lakers 52-48... led by Wally Osterkorn with 20 points and 17 rebounds... Schayes only played 14 minutes, scored 4 points and had 1 rebound... Mikan topped the Lakers with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Minneapolis took the lead two games to one with a big win on the road in Syracuse, socking it to the Nationals 81-67... big George poured in 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds... again Schayes played sparingly... just 13 minutes with 1 point and 3 rebounds. In game four Syracuse evened the series at 2-2 with a home victory, 80-69... Paul Seymour tallied 25 points and Schayes played 25 minutes and scored 10 points with 6 rebounds. Game five in Syracuse went to Minneapolis 84-73 as the Lakers totally controlled the backboards with a 65-36 edge in rebounds and took the lead in the series three games to two... Vern Mikkelsen led the Lakers with 21 points... in 26 minutes Schayes got 17 points, but only 4 rebounds. Now the series switches to Minneapolis for the last two games... but Syracuse rose to the occasion and forced a seventh game... the Nats pulled out a 65-63 win in game six to even it up at three games each, sparked by Seymour with 16 points... Schayes had 15 points and 10 rebounds... Mikan had 30 points and 18 rebounds in defeat. Game seven was on the Lakers' home court... they again dominated the backboards with 56 rebounds to 38 for the Nationals... Jim Pollard sizzled with 21 points... Mikan and Lovellette had 15 and 13 rebounds as Minneapolis finished off Syracuse 87-80 in the seventh-game finale... Monday, April 19, 1954 YANKS NIP GREEN GIANTS IN X-TRAS, SNAP 3-GAME LOSING STRING Last place New Yerby socked it to the top team in the North Island Premier League this past weekend... the Yankees prevailed 9-8 in 12 innings over the Joliet Green Giants... second place Theodore gained a game on Joliet with a 5-2 dousing of the third place Dutton Coyotes. |

Monday, April 19, 1954 KINGS TOP JACKS, TAKE OVER TOP SPOT IN NORTH ISLAND ELITE LEAGUE, WHILE FIREBIRDS FALL TO SECOND The Kofa Kings continued to ride its good pitching to the top of the North Island Elite League standings... the Kings held off the Jackson Jackalopes 3-2 yesterday, while Kinston was upset by the Avalon Valiants in another squeaker 4-3 and the Firebirds dipped to second place. |
