We are in Louisville, Kentucky, today to begin a scheduled 4 game series with manager Elmer Higgins (43-6.4) and his Bourbons. We beat them 2 of 3 in Detroit at the end of May the first time we met. 2 of the 3, including the one we lost were 1-run contests and the other was an 18 to 1 laugher. They are 4th in the League in runs scored with 5.5 per game (Detroit is 3rd with 5.6). They are 4th in the League in runs allowed with 5.5 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.5).

They play in Eclipse Park, built by and still named for a previous Louisville team. It is pretty fair to both pitchers and hitters, except that it is relatively easy to hit a ball over the right field fence and pretty tough to get one over the left field boundary.

Detroit Wolverines (31-14 .689 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Louisville Bourbons (30-22 .577 4.5 GB in 3rd place)

Al Rice, Det. (24-7.6) (R 13-5 1.19 6.5-1.9-4.6 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Jumbo Hoops, Lou. (24-6.5) (R 9-7 4.11 10.2-2.9-3.0)

Hoops got their lone win in the series we played in Detroit.

The Bourbons' veteran players are all mostly really nice guys and their young players are all mostly hooligans.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
DET - 1: 3B Ed Aldrich (25-6.8) 2: SS John Ingling (29-4.6) 3: LF Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: RF Ben Smith* (29-6.7) 5: 1B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 6: CF Ren Dunbar (25-6.8) 7: 2B Ed Engelhardt (24-5.0) 8: C Jimmy Babcock (32-6.9)

LOU - 1: SS Ed Riley* (25-4.1) 2: 1B Pete Hinde (33-7.9) 3: CF Tom Panozzo* (25-2.0) 4: RF Steve Giles* (23-4.2) 5: 3B Sam Clark (38-4.7) 6: C Andy Runnels (32-7.8) 7: LF Ed Phillips (26-3.5) 8: 2B Tom Walker (26-3.8)

Pete Hinde led off the 7th with a clean single to right field, the 1st hit of the game for the Bourbons. Hinde doubled in the 9th to knock in a run and spoil the shutout, too.

Won - 5 to 1

Rice allowed 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6.

Hoops gave us 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5.

We made 1 error and the Bourbons made 4.

Ed Aldrich had 2 hits with a triple and 2 RBIs. Al Lewis had 2 hits, stole a base and scored a run. Jimmy Babcock had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the season and 2nd in as many games, drew a walk and scored 2 runs.

Rookie Steve Giles struck out 4 times in 4 at bats.

Liberty League:

Pittsburgh (17) at Indianapolis (4): Whitey Mathews (26-4.1) (14-5) over Billy Simonsen (24-8.0) (9-4). Mathews allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 2. At bat, he hit a double and scored 3 runs. The Puddlers had 16 hits and the Hoosiers made 9 errors. 3B Ed Glass (29-4.5) had 3 hits with a double and his 3rd home run of the season, drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs.

Cleveland (7) at Cincinnati (6): Lou Townley (27-3.5) (9-10) over John Stevens (32-8.2) (10-8). Townley allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. C Deacon Dubin (32-8.8) hit a triple and a home run and scored twice.

Boston (7) at Kansas City (11): Al McClaughry (25-5.6) (14-6) over Dave Wolf (26-4.7) (6-11). C Gene Stone (32-5.4) had 4 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. SS Bev Bradley (24-6.2) had 4 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 3 runs. The Cowboys have won 6 in a row.

Grand National Association:
Milwaukee (14) at Omaha (7) Game 1: William Peterson (23-7.7) (4-8) over Tom Lee (31-6.0) (7-7). Peterson allowed 13 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had 4 hits with a double and scored 3 runs. Omaha's losing streak is now at 11 games.

Milwaukee (4) at Omaha (5) Game 2: Skyrocket Rice (24-5.2) (11-9) over Zachary Buchanan (28-4.0) (3-4). Losing streak snapped! Rice allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2. Buchanan allowed 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6.

Buffalo (5) at Washington (7): Ed Bush (29-5.3) (12-11) over Fred Barrow (37-4.7) (9-10). Bush allowed 9 hits, 5 walks and struck out 4. For the Bisons, rookie CF Lefty Lay (23-5.4), who is leading the GNA in batting, will miss a week with a strained hamstring.

Only games scheduled.

Detroit Wolverines (32-14 .696 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Louisville Bourbons (30-23 .566 5.5 GB in 3rd place)

Fred McDonough, Det. (21-5.0) (L 3-1 2.04 6.6-2.0-3.1 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. William McLeod, Lou. (30-5.6) (R 7-8 4.93 9.2-4.7-3.9)

We scored 18 runs off our former ace the 1st time we met in Detroit. McDonough gave up 8 runs in his last outing. This might get ugly.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
DET - 1: 3B Ed Aldrich (25-6.8) 2: SS John Ingling (29-4.6) 3: LF Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: RF Ben Smith* (29-6.7) 5: 1B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 6: CF Ren Dunbar (25-6.8) 7: 2B Ed Engelhardt (24-5.0) 8: C Jimmy Babcock (32-6.9)

LOU - 1: 1B Pete Hinde (33-7.9) 2: C Wilson Terlizzi (26-5.6) 3: CF Tom Panozzo* (25-2.0) 4: 3B Sam Clark (38-4.7) 5: RF Steve Giles* (23-4.2) 6: 2B Tom Walker (26-3.8) 7: LF Jack Wallace (36-7.5) 8: SS Freddy Parsley (29-7.5)

We were down, 6 to 1, after 5 innings and I had pretty much resigned myself to a loss already. Going into the top of the 9th, we were down, 6 to 3. Jimmy Babcock led us off with a single. PH Tom Morgenthal worked a walk. Ed Aldrich grounded into a force at 2nd. Runners at 1st and 3rd now with 1 out. John Ingling singled to score Babcock and Aldrich went for 3rd and beat the thrown, Ingling taking 2nd. Al Lewis then hit a little nubber in the direction of third base, but by the time McLeod fielded it, Lewis was safe at 1st, the other runners holding. Bases loaded and 1 out for Ben Smith, who singled to right, scoring 2 and tying the game! Odekirk and Dunbar popped out to end the inning.

Ed Price came on to pitch the bottom of the 9th. He got Hinde to ground out and then struck out Terlizzi and Panozzo!

In the top of the 10th, with 1 out, 3 straight singles by Babcock, Price and Aldrich gave us the go-ahead run, but that was all we got. Price is now 7 for 18 as a hitter (.389). He hit a home run for Syracuse (A) earlier this year.

In the bottom of the 10th, Price issued a 2-out walk, but no more!

Won - 7 to 6 in 10 innings

In 8 innings, McDonough allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. He also beaned a batter. Only 1 of the 6 runs he allowed was earned.
In 2 innings, Price allowed no hits, 1 walk and struck out 3 and ran his record to 5-0.

In 10 innings, McLeod gave us 15 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

We made 5 errors and the Bourbons made 3.

John Ingling had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Al Lewis had 2 hits with is 3rd home run of the year. Ben Smith had 2 hits with a double and a walk, was hit by a pitch and had 3 RBIs. Dave Odekirk had 2 infield singled and scored a run. Ed Engelhardt had 2 hits and an RBI. Jimmy Babcock, the hottest hitter on the team, had 3 hits with a double and scored twice. He also threw out Hinde trying to steal, the only runner who attempted.

For the Bourbons, 2B Tom Walker had 2 hits with a triple and a walk and had 2 RBIs.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (0) at Cincinnati (6) Game 1: Charlie Branham (29-4.2) (14-4) over Tom McDowell (25-8.0) (7-9). Branham allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he hit a double, drew a walk, scored a run and had an RBI.

Cleveland (5) at Cincinnati (6) Game 2: William Butina (26-5.6) (7-8) over Gussie Byrne (29-4.4) (0-1) in relief of Tom McDowell (25-8.0). The Spiders were forced to go with infielder Byrne as a pitcher when McDowell had to leave with a sore arm with 2 outs and a runner on base. 2B Ed Kent (25-3.6) promptly hit a 2-run home run to win it. McDowell should be fine with a day or two of rest. Butina allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. He gave up 5 unearned runs because the Reds made 8 errors.

Pittsburgh (7) at Indianapolis (3): Joe Peters (33-4.9) (5-8) over Al Conradt (25-4.1) (3-15). Peters allowed 8 hits, 9 walks and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit and scored 2 runs. LF Lou Green (24-5.9) had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 3 runs. For the Hoosiers, RF Ed Wakefield (29-5.8) had 3 hits with a triple and knocked in all 3 of Indy's runs.

Boston (17) at Kansas City (10): Freddy Wood (33-6.3) (4-8) over Dan Butler (32-4.7) (6-10). The Shamrocks, showing glimpses of the old Red Caps, scored 9 runs in the 5th inning. Butler walked 15 in 8 innings for a new Liberty League record. 3B Highball Baxter (23-5.7) had 4 hits, 2 walks and scored 2 runs. RF Dan Abrams (30-5.1) had 1 hit and 5 walks, to set a new Liberty League record and tie the major league mark, and scored 3 runs. He was injured in a collision on the base paths, though and will miss a couple of weeks with a bum elbow.

Grand National Association:
Providence (8) at Brooklyn (2): Tom Ashton (25-5.2) (11-6) over Al Green (26-3.8) (13-8). Ashton allowed 1 hit, a 2-out, 2-run single in the 8th, walked 2 and struck out no one. At bat, he had 2 hits and a walk and scored 2 runs. 1B Ren Mason (23-6.9) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, stole a base, scored 4 runs and had an RBI. Brooklyn made 10 errors.

Buffalo (6) at Washington (10): Dave Frazier (29-5.7) (2-2) over Cal Wright (27-4.5) (2-2). 2B Kitty Covington (24-5.4) had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI.

Milwaukee (3) at St. Louis (6): Con Arnold (25-6.3) (7-10) over Dave Ward (24-6.1) (10-13). Arnold allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 1. Ward allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double.

Chicago (6) at Omaha (4): Pat Seguin (25-4.4) (15-10) over Lee Sprague (29-3.5) (9-13). Seguin allowed 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. Sprague allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. Jesse Flanders (29-5.4) is 5 for 40 (.125) with 2 triples since the trade.

Grand National Association:
Providence (6) at Brooklyn (3): Ed Wison (28-7.3) (12-8) over William David (26-3.6) (10-8). Wison allowed 6 hits, walked 10 and struck out 6. I knew William David was the antichrist! He allowed 6 hits, 6 walks and struck out 6. On a Sunday, no less!

Washington (1) at Buffalo (6): Wild Bill Perrell (25-7.3) (11-8) over Jiggs Niedermeyer (25-5.8) (1-5). Perrell allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. Niedermeyer allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he had 2 of the Monuments' 3 hits with a triple and a walk, but no runs or RBIs. He deserved a better fate than this....

Milwaukee (6) at St. Louis (10): Jimmy Richards (26-0.9) (11-13) over Andy Byl (35-4.0) (0-1) in relief of William Peterson (23-7.7). Peterson had to leave after 4 innings when he bruised his knee sliding. He should be fine in a day or two.

Chicago (2) at Omaha (8): Lee Sprague (29-3.5) (10-13) over Skyrocket Howard (24-5.4) (10-7). Pitching without a day off, Sprague allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. LF Tom Durkin (23-6.6) had 4 hits with a double and a triple, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Detroit Wolverines (33-14 .702 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Louisville Bourbons (30-24 .556 6.5 GB in 4th place)

Al Rice, Det. (24-7.6) (R 14-5 1.18 6.3-1.9-4.7 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Miah Turner, Lou. (28-5.3) (R 13-7 2.16 8.2-2.2-4.2)

We beat Turner the 1st time we met him this year in Detroit, but only got 4 hits and no earned runs.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
DET - 1: 3B Ed Aldrich (25-6.8) 2: 2B Ducky Foster (24-9.0) 3: RF Tom Morgenthal (27-5.3) 4: RF Ben Smith* (29-6.7) 5: SS Pat Dunbar (27-8.3) 6: 1B Patsy Roberts (35-5.5) 7: CF Sam King (23-6.0) 8: C Pony Lanza* (29-4.9)

LOU - 1: SS Ed Riley* (25-4.1) 2: 1B Pete Hinde (33-7.9) 3: CF Tom Panozzo* (25-2.0) 4: RF Steve Giles* (23-4.2) 5: LF Pete Armstrong* (22-4.6) 6: 3B Sam Clark (38-4.7) 7: C Andy Runnels (32-7.8) 8: 2B Tom Walker (26-3.8)

We scored a run in the 1st, but Rice was out of sync to start the game and walked 2 int he 1st inning. A double and an error gave them 3 runs and the game was over.

Lost - 5 to 2

Rice allowed 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3.

Turner gave us 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run.

We made 4 errors and the Bourbons made 3.

Ed Aldrich had 3 hits with a triple and scored a run. He led off the game with a single, but got caught stealing 1 pitch before Ducky Foster hit a triple. Foster scored a run. Ben Smith hit a double. Patsy Roberts only managed an infield single, though he hit the ball well 2 other times, but in the field he started a 3-6-3 double play and made an unassisted double-play on a line drive he snared.

For the Bourbons, SS Ed Riley had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Tom Panozzo had 2 hits and 2 walks and scored a run. Sam Clark hit the 2-run double in the 1st that basically won the game.

Liberty League:
Pittsburgh (4) at Indianapolis (8): Sal DeVaux (34-3.5) (6-13) over Whitey Mathews (26-4.1) (14-6). DeVaux allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI.

Cleveland (3) at Cincinnati (4) in 11 innings: John Stevens (32-8.2) (11-8) over Lou Townley (27-3.5) (9-11). 3 Spider errors in the bottom of the 11th gave the game to the Reds. In 11 innings, Stevens allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Townley allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he his a double and scored a run.

Boston (3) at Kansas City (6): Al McClaughry (25-5.6) (15-6) over William Little (28-6.0) (5-15). McClaughry allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 7. He becomes the 1st 15 game winner in the Liberty League this season.

Grand National Association:
Milwaukee (6) at St. Louis (4): William Peterson (23-7.7) (5-8) in relief of Zachary Buchanan (28-4.0) over Ed Copeland (23-6.0) (5-11). Buchanan has to leave for some reason in the 3rd inning, but no one said why. He is apparently fine now. Peterson came in on and pitched with a badly bruised knee that he suffered yesterday. Rookie LF Lew Grace (25-6.0) hit a triple and his 2nd home run of the season and had 2 RBIs.

Chicago (28) at Omaha (10): Pony Stanley (26-6.2) (12-5) over Lee Sprague (29-3.5) (10-14). Trying to pitch his 3rd straight day, Sprague could not make it out of the 2nd inning. Non-pitchers went the rest of the way, with decidedly ugly results. The Colts had 23 hits and 12 walks. Editor's Note: I don't enjoy these games, but crap like this actually happened back then in real life and our simulation is set up to account for an occasional one of these. OOTP17 was doing it too often, however. One of the reasons for this game is that Tom Lee (31-6.0) has lost a lot of his stamina in recent years and cannot bounce back as quickly from 150-pitch games as most pitchers, so he's leaving his staff mates out to dry.

Providence at Brooklyn was rained out.

Detroit Wolverines (33-15 .688 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Louisville Bourbons (31-24 .564 5.5 GB in 3rd place)

Fred McDonough, Det. (21-5.0) (L 3-1 1.87 7.1-1.9-2.9 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Jumbo Hoops, Lou. (24-6.5) (R 9-8 4.05 10.1-2.8-3.1)

We are 1-1 against Hoops, but Al Rice (24-7.6) 2-hit the Bourbons in his loss.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
DET - 1: 3B Ducky Foster (24-9.0) 2: SS John Ingling (29-4.6) 3: Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: RF Tom Morgenthal (27-5.3) 5: C Jimmy Babcock (32-6.9) 6: 1B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 7: CF Ren Dunbar (25-6.8) 8: 2B Ed Engelhardt (24-5.0)

LOU - 1: 1B Pete Hinde (33-7.9) 2: C Wilson Terlizzi (26-5.6) 3: LF Pete Armstrong* (22-4.6) 4: CF Tom Panozzo* (25-2.0) 5: 3B Sam Clark (38-4.7) 6: 2B Tom Walker (26-3.8) 7: LF Jack Wallace (36-7.5) 8: SS Ed Riley* (25-4.1)

Won - 6 to 2

McDonough allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. He gave up 3 hits in 1 inning when they scored their 2 runs. I really like the way this kid pitches, but watching him try to hit is torture. He struck out 4 times today. Pony Lanza (29-4.9) can't catch McDonough, because then the opposing pitcher would be starting out with 7 or 8 strikeouts already in the bag.

Hoops gave us 13 hits, no walks and struck out 7.

We made 1 error and the Bourbons made 4.

Ducky Foster had a hit, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. John Ingling had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Al Lewis had a hit, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Tom Morgenthal hit 2 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Jimmy Babcock is still on his tear, getting 3 hits and 2 RBIs. He was thrown out twice trying for an extra base, though. Dave Odekirk had 3 hits with a double, but no runs or RBIs. Ed Engelhardt hit a double and stole a base.

Liberty League:

Pittsburgh (6) at Indianapolis (5) in 10 innings: Tom Lilly (29-6.4) (9-8) over Al Conradt (26-4.1) (3-16). In 10 innings, Lilly allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. Conradt allowed 10 its, 3 walks and struck out 2.

Cleveland (5) at Cincinnati (8): Charlie Branham (29-4.2) (15-4) over Artie Boucher (26-6.1) (4-11). Branham allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and scored 2 runs.

Boston (6) at Kansas City (16): Piggy Lambert (25-8.2) (10-7) over Dave Wolf (26-4.7) (6-12). LF Lou Baggett (27-4.2), who had a 20 game hitting streak snapped yesterday, had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs.

Time for some holiday double-headers!

We are in Kansas City to begin a 4 game series with a double-header today against manager/LF Connie Frenette (34-4.7) and his Cowboys. Then we will all ride the same train to Detroit and play 3 more games there. We beat them 2 of 3 in Detroit back in May, but in the one they won they scored 14 times. Kansas City is 2nd in the League in scoring with 6.6 runs per game (Detroit is #3 with 5.6). They are 6th in runs allowed with 6.3 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.5).

Exposition Park is a tough place to be a pitcher. Home runs are not cheap, but their infield has no grass and is as hard as a rock and a lot of ground balls are too quick for the fielders to stop before they reach the outfield.

Detroit Wolverines (34-15 .694 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Kansas City Cowboys (31-24 .564 6 GB in 3rd place)

Game 1
Al Rice, Det. (24-7.6) (R 14-6 1.23 6.0-2.0-4.6 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Al McClaughry, K.C. (25-5.6) (R 15-6 3.14 8.5-2.1-3.4)

We scored 9 runs off McClaughry the 1st time we faced him.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
DET - 1: 3B Ed Aldrich (25-6.8) 2: SS John Ingling (29-4.6) 3: Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: RF Ben Smith* (29-6.7) 5: 1B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 6: C Jimmy Babcock (32-6.9) 7: 2B Ed Engelhardt (24-5.0) 8: CF Sam King (23-6.0)

KC - 1: RF Ed Anderson# (21-7.5) 2: C Evan Eckberg (33-3.5) 3: LF Lou Baggett (27-4.2) 4: CF Heinie Ashmore (24-6.0) 5: 1B John Hilliard* (29-7.2) 6: SS Bev Bradley# (24-6.2) 7: 3B Lou Kelsey (24-5.2) 8: 2B Jim McCarthy# (27-7.5)

1st inning, 1st 2 batted balls, 1st 2 errors by John Ingling. If the trade deadline wasn't already passed, he'd be headed somewheres else. Worst trade I ever made. Baggett then singled, but Smith averted immediate disaster by throwing Anderson out at the plate. But Ashmore doubled to score 2. 2 to 1, Cowboys.

We tied it up in the 4th on a double by Sam King and a single by Al Rice. King's was the 1st hit by a center fielder for us in about a week.

We scored 3 times in the top of the 7th. In the bottom, Ed Engelhardt got taken out by Bev Bradley when trying to turn a double-play and sprained his wrist. Ducky Foster went in to play.

In the 9th, Jimmy Babcock hurt his ankle sliding into home.

Won - 9 to 4

Rice allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 8. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

McClaughry gave us 15 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.

We made 5 errors (3 by Ingling, who is officially banished to the bench) and the Cowboys made 4.

Ed Aldrich hit a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Ben Smith had 2 hits with a triple and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. Dave Odekirk had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. He has 16 hits in his last 8 games, batting .457 over the stretch! Jimmy Babcock had 2 hits with a double and scored a run, but I wish he hadn't. His gimpy ankle will keep him out 4 or 5 days. Ed Engelhardt will be out a couple of weeks, but if I call to Syracuse for a replacement, it will leave them short-handed, so we'll try to get by on what we have. Foster and Pat Dunbar (27-8.3) will be the nicest DP combo ever and Ingling can sit and grumble at me on the bench. His fielding average was an excellent .934 for Washington before the trade. He was the only GNA shortstop with a FA over .900. For us, his FA is an even .800. He's made as many errors for us as he did for Washington in a third of the games. 17 errors in 15 games for us and 17 in 42 for them. Hopefully some time off will fix him. Sam King hit 2 doubles and scored a run. It is time for him to break out and claim the center field job for his own.

Game 2
Ed Price, Det. (25-5.7) (R 5-0 3.89 10.5-2.2-4.6 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Dan Butler, K.C. (32-4.7) (R 6-10 6.45 12.4-7.5-3.1)

Believe it or not, Butler is the one that beat us in that 3 game series in Detroit back in May. We scored 9 runs off him, but they scored 14 off us. Hard to believe that they don't think they have a better option for their rotation than a guy who's walking 7.5 per game. And I am pretty sure I am jinxing us with these comments.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
DET - 1: 3B Ed Aldrich (25-6.8) 2: 2B Ducky Foster (24-9.0) 3: Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: RF Ben Smith* (29-6.7) 5: 1B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 6: SS Pat Dunbar (27-8.3) 7: CF Sam King (23-6.0) 8: C Pony Lanza (29-4.9)

KC - 1: RF Ed Anderson# (21-7.5) 2: C Gene Stone (32-5.4) 3: LF Lou Baggett (27-4.2) 4: CF Heinie Ashmore (24-6.0) 5: 1B John Hilliard* (29-7.2) 6: SS Bev Bradley# (24-6.2) 7: 3B Lou Kelsey (24-5.2) 8: 2B Jim McCarthy# (27-7.5)

It is official: I am a jinxer.

Lost - 4 to 2

Price allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double and scored both of our runs. He's hitting .417 since being called up.

Butler gave us 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. 2 walks!! He walked 15 his last time out!!! And 11 the time before that!!!!

We made 2 errors and the Cowboys made 1.

Al Lewis had 2 hits and stole 2 bases and had an RBI.

2 walks!!!!! 0-2 against Dan Butler!!!!!!

Liberty League:
Pittsburgh (5) at Cincinnati (6) Game 1: John Stevens (32-8.2) (12-8) over Whitey Mathews (26-4.1) (14-7). C John Whelan (28-4.6) hit 2 home runs to give him 3 on the season. He had 5 RBIs.

Pittsburgh (6) at Cincinnati (3) Game 2: Joe Peters (33-4.9) (6-8) over William Butina (26-5.6) (7-9). Peters allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. Butina allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7.

Cleveland (19) at Indianapolis (6) Game 1: Lou Townley (27-3.5) (10-11) over Sal DeVaux (34-3.5) (6-14). The Spiders scored 13 runs in the 4th inning! Townley led off the 4th by grounding out to 2nd and then the Spiders had 11 straight hits. Townley allowed 5 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and scored 3 runs. CF Effie Poff (23-8.5) had 4 hits with a double and his 2nd home run of the year, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 5 RBIs. 1B Dave Kelly (27-6.0) had 4 hits with his 4th home run of the season and 3 RBIs.

Indy scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game, but unfortunately had to pinch-hit for their pitcher to do it and did not have another pitcher rested enough to go in for the 10th. Campbell did not give up a hit, but walked 3 and threw a wild pitch. RF Tom Steiner (23-4.9) had 4 hits, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.

Boston (0) at Louisville (6) Game 1: Miah Turner (28-5.3) (15-7) over William Little (28-6.0) (5-16). Turner allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5.

Boston (3) at Louisville (1) Game 2: Freddy Wood (33-6.3) (5-8) over William McLeod (30-5.6) (7-10). Wood allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. McLeod allowed 6 hits, 8 walks and struck out 6.

Grand National Association:
Providence (11) at St. Louis (10) Game 1: Ed Wison (28-7.3) (13-8) over Con Arnold (25-6.3) (7-11). At the end of the 1st inning, the Grays led, 6 to 5, and all the scoring was done by the end of the 6th. CF Tom Herold (24-6.4) had 3 hits with a triple and a walk, stole a base, sored 3 runs and had 5 RBIs. 2B Dave Stricker (27-5.2) had 5 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.

Providence (3) at St. Louis (4) in 11 innings Game 2: Ed Copeland (23-6.0) (6-11) over Jimmy Harrison (22-4.6) (7-10). Rookie CF Effie Green (24-4.6) hit a 2-out single to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th and the winning run scored on a 2-out error in the 11th. In 11 innings, Copeland allowed 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. Harrison allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.

Buffalo (5) at Omaha (8) Game 1: Lee Sprague (29-3.5) (11-14) over Cal Wright (27-4.5) (2-3). CF Dave Todd (24-5.5) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Buffalo (9) at Omaha (4) Game 2: Fred Barrow (37-4.7) (10-11) over Tom Lee (31-6.0) (8-8). Barrow allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2.

Brooklyn (7) at Milwaukee (8) Game 1: Zachary Buchanan (28-4.0) (4-4) over Al Green (26-3.8) (13-9). The Brewers scored 5 times in the bottom of the 9th to win. 3B Tom Kelly (25-5.3) landed the final blow, a 2-run single.

Brooklyn (10) at Milwaukee (2) Game 2: William David (26-3.6) (11-8) over Dave Ward (24-6.1) (10-14). David allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 7.

Washington (2) at Chicago (5) Game 1: Pat Seguin (25-4.4) (16-10) over Ed Bush (29-5.3) (12-12). Seguin allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Bush allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4.

Washington (2) at Chicago (7) Game 2: Skyrocket Howard (24-5.4) (11-7) over Jiggs Niedermeyer (25-5.8) (1-6). Howard allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.

After the games were over, Englishman Jim Martin (27-5.0), the hot-hitting young catcher for the Buffalo Bisons, decided to do some holiday celebrating late into the evening and ended up in a gunfight in an Omaha bar. He was shot in the stomach and died in the early morning. Tom Anglin (36-5.6), Omaha's veteran first baseman, was in the same bar and was shot in the knee. He apparently was trying to mediate the dispute between Martin and the bar patron who killed him and was shot accidentally. He will be out for the rest of the season and may be finished as a player.

Ike Lee (66-4.5) has tired of having a last place team in Boston and fired manager John Rickey (44-7.9). P Dave Wolf (24-4.7) will run the team for the time being.

Detroit Wolverines (35-16 .686 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at
Kansas City Cowboys (32-25 .564 6 GB in 3rd place)

Fred McDonough, Det. (21-5.0) (L 4-1 1.89 6.5-1.7-2.6 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Piggy Lambert, K.C. (25-8.2) (R 10-7 3.66 10.1-2.6-3.7)

We beat Lambert in sudden death in Detroit, 3 to 2, the 1st time we faced him and only had 5 hits. We've got Pony Lanza (29-4.9) catching McDonough today, so Lambert has already bagged 7 strikeouts, at least.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
DET - 1: 3B Ed Aldrich (25-6.8) 2: 2B Ducky Foster (24-9.0) 3: Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: RF Ben Smith* (29-6.7) 5: 1B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 6: SS Pat Dunbar (27-8.3) 7: CF Sam King (23-6.0) 8: C Pony Lanza (29-4.9)

KC - 1: RF Ed Anderson# (21-7.5) 2: SS Bev Bradley# (24-6.2) 3: LF Lou Baggett (27-4.2) 4: CF Heinie Ashmore (24-6.0) 5: C Gene Stone (32-5.4) 6: 2B Jim McCarthy# (27-7.5) 7: 1B Jimmy Harrison (27-5.4) 8: 3B Lou Kelsey (24-5.2)

We were cruising along and headed into the bottom of the 5th up 12 to 0. But the Cowboys put 6 runs on the board in that inning and 3 more the next.

Won - 14 to 10

McDonough allowed 13 hits, 5 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and drew a walk and scored 3 runs! He also struck out twice.

We had 13 hits, 4 walks and struck out 6 times against Lambert and Dan Butler (32-4.7), who pitched the 9th inning.

We made 2 errors and the Cowboys made 7.

Ed Aldrich had 5 hits with a double and 2 triples, stole a base, scored 5 runs and had 4 RBIs. Best day I can remember a hitter ever having for me. No other Wolverine has ever scored 5 runs in a game. Ducky Foster had 3 hits, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. Dave Odekirk did not get a hit, but had a bases-loaded walk and 2 RBIs. Pat Dunbar hit a double and scored a run. Sam King had 3 hits with a triple and scored a run. Pony Lanza did not have a hit, but scored twice and had an RBI.

Liberty League:
Cleveland (11) at Indianapolis (12) in 10 innings: Billy Simonsen (24-8.0) (10-4) in relief of Al Conradt (25-4.1) over Gussie Byrne (29-4.4) (0-2) in relief of Artie Boucher (26-6.1). Boucher sprained his elbow and will miss about 3 weeks. Ed Wakefield (29-5.8) hit a 2-out single to win the game. SS Jake Steitz (30-4.7) pulled a muscle and will miss about 2 weeks. For the Spiders. 3B Cowboy Gray (27-7.8) had 4 hits with 2 doubles and a walk and scored 2 runs.

Pittsburgh (1) at Cincinnati (19): Charlie Branham (29-4.2) (16-4) over Tom Lilly (29-6.4) (9-9). Branham allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. The Reds had 21 hits, 5 of them by rookie 2B Lev Carpenter (22-6.0). He hit his 2nd home run of the year, scored 3 times and had 5 RBIs.

Boston (4) at Louisville (6): Jumbo Hoops (24-6.5) (10-9) over Dave Wolf (26-4.7) (6-13). Hoops allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 5.

Grand National Association:
Brooklyn (7) at Milwaukee (1): Tom Homer (25-5.0) (8-7) over William Peterson (23-7.7) (5-9). Homer allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. Peterson allowed 10 hits, 4 walks and struck out 10.

Washington (4) at Chicago (5) in 13 innings: Pat Seguin (25-4.4) (17-10) in relief of Pony Stanley (26-6.2) over Dave Frazier (29-5.7) (2-3). LF Fred Negus (25-6.7) singled home C Cliff Robinson (31-6.1) to win the game. In 9 innings, Stanley allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 9. In 4 innings, Seguin allowed no runs, 2 its, 1 walk and struck out 3. In 12 innings, Frazier allowed 12 hits. 6 walks and struck out 3.

Buffalo at Omaha and Providence at St. Louis were both rained out.

Detroit Wolverines (36-16 .692 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at

We are 0-2 against Butler. I am tempted to not take any bats to the park today and make all my batters take every pitch.... 2 walks!!....we had better get more than 2 walks today.

The last time Tom Trever (26-4.7) caught Price, the other team stole 9 bases.

KC - 1: RF Ed Anderson# (21-7.5) 2: C Gene Stone (32-5.4) 3: LF Lou Baggett (27-4.2) 4: CF Heinie Ashmore (24-6.0) 5: 1B John Hilliard* (29-7.2) 6: SS Bev Bradley# (24-6.2) 7: 3B Lou Kelsey (24-5.2) 8: 2B Jim McCarthy# (27-7.5)

We are back home to begin a two week home stand, beginning with the same team we just played at their park.

Kansas City Cowboys (32-27 .542 8 GB in 4th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (37-16 .698 in 1st place)

Al McClaughry K.C. (25-5.6) (R 15-7 3.22 8.8-2.1-3.3 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (24-7.6) (R 15-6 1.22 6.5-2.0-4.8)

We are 2-0 against McClaughry so far, scoring 9 runs in each game.

C Jimmy Babcock (32-6.9) says he's ready to play again.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
KC - 1: RF Ed Anderson# (21-7.5) 2: C Gene Stone (32-5.4) 3: LF Lou Baggett (27-4.2) 4: CF Heinie Ashmore (24-6.0) 5: 1B John Hilliard* (29-7.2) 6: SS Bev Bradley# (24-6.2) 7: 3B Al Sarbacker (28-4.8) 8: 2B Jim McCarthy# (27-7.5)

DET - 1: 3B Ed Aldrich (25-6.8) 2: 2B Ducky Foster (24-9.0) 3: Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: RF Ben Smith* (29-6.7) 5: 1B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 6: C Jimmy Babcock (32-6.9) 7: SS Pat Dunbar (27-8.3) 8: CF Sam King (23-6.0)

Won - 6 to 1

Rice allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits.

McClaughry gave us 14 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1.

We made 1 error and the Cowboys made 2.

Al Lewis had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Ben Smith had 3 hits with a double, was hit by a pitch, scored a run and had an RBI. Jimmy Babcock had 2 hits and an RBI. Pat Dunbar hit a double and scored a run. Sam King hit a triple, scored a run and had an RBI.

Liberty League:
Indianapolis (7) at Cleveland (6): Sal DeVaux (34-3.5) (7-14) over Lou Townley (27-3.5) (10-12). DeVaux allowed 12 hits, 5 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had 3 hits with a double and a triple and scored a run. Indy had 17 hits.

Cincinnati (7) at Pittsburgh (2): John Stevens (32-8.2) (13-8) over Whitey Mathews (26-4.1) (14-8). Stevens allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. At bat, he hit a double. Mathews has lost 4 of his last 5. Rookie 2B Lev Carpenter (22-6.0) hit 3 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Louisville (9) at Boston (3): Miah Turner (28-5.3) (16-7) over William Little (28-6.0) (5-17). Turner allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had 3 hits and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 3B Sam Clark (38-4.7) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. RF Pat Womack (28-6.3), an ex-Wolverine, had 4 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Grand National Association:
Providence (1) at Omaha (7): Tom Lee (31-6.0) (9-8) over Jimmy Harrison (22-4.6) (7-11). Lee allowed 1 hit (a 4th inning home run to RF John Froom (40-6.2)), 3 walks and struck out 8.

Buffalo (5) at St. Louis (6): Ed Copeland (23-6.0) (7-11) over Adonis Phillips (29-8.4) (0-1) in relief of Fred Barrow (37-4.7). Buffalo scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead, but had to pinch-hit for Barrow without a rested pitcher to take his place. 3B Kid Powell (26-7.5) knocked in the winning run with a 2-out single. For the Bisons, LF Washington Macho (39-8.3) pulled a muscle and will miss 2 to 3 weeks.

Brooklyn (7) at Chicago (2): Tom Homer (25-5.0) (9-7) over Pony Stanley (26-6.2) (12-6). Homer allowed 1 hit (a 2-out single in the bottom of the 9th to 3B Stub Nelson (27-5.6)), 10 walks and struck out 2. Might be the oddest line I have ever seen! Missed a no-hitter by 1 out!

Kansas City Cowboys (32-28 .533 9 GB in 4th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (38-16 .704 in 1st place)

Piggy Lambert, K.C. (25-8.2) (R 10-8 3.81 10.2-2.6-3.8 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Fred McDonough, Det. (21-5.0) (L 5-1 2.35 7.5-2.2-2.8)

We are 2-0 against Lambert so far. When these same two pitchers met in Kansas City, we won 14 to 10.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
KC - 1: RF Ed Anderson# (21-7.5) 2: SS Bev Bradley# (24-6.2) 3: LF Lou Baggett (27-4.2) 4: CF Heinie Ashmore (24-6.0) 5: 1B John Hilliard* (29-7.2) 6: C Evan Eckberg (33-3.5) 7: 2B Jim McCarthy# (27-7.5) 8: 3B Lou Kelsey (24-5.2)

DET - 1: 3B Ed Aldrich (25-6.8) 2: 2B Ducky Foster (24-9.0) 3: Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: RF Ben Smith* (29-6.7) 5: 1B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 6: C Jimmy Babcock (32-6.9) 7: SS Pat Dunbar (27-8.3) 8: CF Sam King (23-6.0)

This game ended with non-pitchers tossing balls to the plate for both teams.

Won - 11 to 10 in 11 innings

In 9 innings, McDonough allowed 9 hits, 5 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run and did not strike out! What happened to that great control he sowed earlier in the year? He has now walked 5 in each of his last 2 starts.
In 2 innings, Al Lewis allowed 2 hits, 2 unearned runs, no walks and struck out 1. He picks up his 1st major league victory! It is the 4th time he has appeared as a pitcher for the Wolverines. He was a mediocre pitcher back in college.

We got 12 hits, 14 walks and struck out once (Ducky Foster). McDonough beaned Piggy Lambert on the wrist and he had to leave after 5 innings. He should be fine in about a week, but can probably pitch in the meantime.

We made 5 errors and the Cowboys made 4.

Ed Aldrich had a hit and 3 walks, stole a base and scored 2 runs. Ducky Foster drew 4 walks, stole 3 bases and scored 2 runs. Al Lewis had 3 hits with a double and a walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Ben SMith hit 2 doubles and drew a walk and had 2 RBIs. He got beaned on the hand and broke a finger and will miss a month or so. AH!! He was having his best season since his MVP year of 1885. Pat Dunbar had 2 hits and a walk, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Sam King had 2 hits, was beaned and had an RBI. He had an amazing 11 putouts in center today without any errors!

For the Cowboys, Ed Anderson had 2 hits with a triple and a walk, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Lou Baggett had a hit and 3 RBIs, but made 2 errors and injured himself making a throw. He should miss about a week. CF Heinie Ashmore had 4 hits with an inside-the-park home run, his 5th long ball of the year, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

I sent for rookie RF Fred Floyd (22-6.0) to be here by tomorrow. He's been tearing up the International League (A), batting .398.

Liberty League:
Indianapolis (5) at Cleveland (4): Al Conradt (25-4.1) (4-16) over Tom McDowell (25-8.0) (8-10). Conradt allowed 10 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3.

Cincinnati (4) at Pittsburgh (6): Joe Peters (33-4.9) (7-9) in relief of Tom Lilly (29-6.4) over Charlie Branham (29-4.2) (16-5). Lilly had to leave in the 4th inning with an badly injured elbow. He will miss at least a year, they say. In 5.2 innings, Peters allowed 4 hits, 5 walks and struck out 5. Branham allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 3.

Louisville (4) at Boston (9): Dave Wolf (26-4.7) (7-13) over Jumbo Hoops (24-6.5) (10-10). Wolf allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 9 in Boston's 1st win with him as the manager. RF Jocko Breton (26-4.5) had 3 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. CF Pat Stafford (28-5.4) hit a double and 2 home runs (#'s 4 and 5 on the season) and had 4 RBIs.

Grand National Association:
Buffalo (2) at Chicago (15): Pat Seguin (25-4.4) (19-10) over Wild Bill Perrell (25-7.3) (11-11). Seguin allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 2B Eb Provost (25-4.6) had 4 hits with 2 doubles, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Ex-Wolverine 1B Fred Negus (25-6.7) hit a double and his 2nd home run of the year, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs.

No games scheduled; the above contest was a makeup game.

Kansas City Cowboys (32-29 .525 10 GB in 5th place in the Liberty League) at

Dan Butler, K.C. (32-4.7) (R 7-11 6.46 12.5-7.1-3.4 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Ed Price, Det. (25-5.7) (R 6-1 3.17 10.0-2.0-3.7)

We are 1-2 against Butler so far, finally beating him the last time we faced him, scoring 16 runs.

RF Fred Floyd (22-6.0) makes his major league debut for us today.

KC - 1: RF Ed Anderson# (21-7.5) 2: C Evan Eckberg (33-3.5) 3: LF Jimmy Harrison (27-5.4) 4: CF Heinie Ashmore (24-6.0) 5: 1B John Hilliard* (29-7.2) 6: SS Bev Bradley# (24-6.2) 7: 3B Kid Coblentz (25-3.4) 8: 2B Jim McCarthy# (27-7.5)

Liberty League:

Indianapolis (6) at Cleveland (4): Billy Simonsen (24-8.0) (11-5) over Willard Clapp (27-4.3) (1-1). Simonsen allowed 11 hits, 6 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. RF Ed Wakefield (29-5.8) had 4 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Cincinnati (12) at Pittsburgh (13): Whitey Mathews (26-4.1) (15-8) in relief of Bill Henrichs (30-7.4) over Charlie Branham (29-4.2) (16-6) in relief of William Butina (26-5.6). The Reds scored a run in the top of the 9th to tie it up, but 1B Al Oglesby (25-7.6) won it with a 2-out single in the bottom half of the inning. Mathews faced only 1 batter to get the win. RF Billy Galloway (28-5.3) had 3 hits with his 3rd home run of the year, drew a walk, stole a base and scored 4 runs. For the Reds, RF Fleet Wilcox (32-4.9) hit a triple and a bases=loaded home run, his 6th home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 5 RBIs. 1B Will Muller tore a muscle in his groin and will miss about 2 months.

Louisville (9) at Boston (2): William McLeod (30-5.6) (9-10) over Freddy Wood (33-6.3) (5-10). McLeod allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5.

Washington (2) at Omaha (8): Lee Sprague (29-3.5) (13-14) over Ed Bush (29-5.3) (12-14). Sprague allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 7. 2B Jocko Cole (27-6.1) had 3 hits with a bases loaded home run, his 3rd long ball of the year, got hit by a pitch and scored 3 runs. 3B Al Shaffer (28-5.6) had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBIs.

Providence (4) at Milwaukee (6): Zachary Buchanan (28-4.0) (5-4) over Tom Ashton (25-5.2) (11-9). Buchanan allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. Ashton allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. RF Ed Capps (26-6.1) cracked a bone in his foot and will miss about 3 weeks.

Brooklyn (17) at St. Louis (7): Al Green (26-3.8) (14-10) over Jimmy Richards (26-0.9) (13-14). Green allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. SS Charlie Smith (31-5.6) had 3 hits with his 3rd home run of the season, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs. C Billy Boblett (31-5.4) hit a bases-loaded home run, his 2nd home run of the year, drew 2 walks and scored 2 runs.

Buffalo (2) at Chicago (5): Skyrocket Howard (24-5.4) (13-7) over Fred Barrow (37-4.7) (10-12). Howard allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Barrow allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4.

Elsewhere:
John Piper (22-5.2), Omaha's 1st round pick in the December draft (the 2nd player picked overall), has had a rough start to his season with the Lincoln Rustlers. He lost his 1st 9 decisions in A Ball and 11 of his 1st 12. But today, he no-hit the St. Joseph Clay Eaters for 8 innings before giving up a hit with 2 outs in the 9th. LF John Walker (31-6.6), who Piper had earlier hit with a pitch, grounded a single into right field to spoil the bid. Piper struck out the final batter to secure the shutout. He walked 3 and struck out 7 in the game. At bat, he had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (41-4.1) has his Hoosiers in town to begin a 3 game series today. We are 7-0 against them on the season and swept them in a 4 game series in Indianapolis 3 weeks ago the last time we met. They are 4th in the League in scoring with 5.5 runs per game (Detroit is #3 with 6.0). They are dead last in runs allowed with 7.6 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.7).

Indianapolis Hoosiers (22-37 .373 19.5 GB in 7th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (40-16 .714 in 1st place)

Sal DeVaux, Ind. (34-3.5) (R 7-14 5.63 12.1-5.1-3.0 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (24-7.6) (R 16-6 1.21 6.3-1.9-4.7)

We are 2-0 against our old teammate, DeVaux, so far, scoring 19 runs in the 2 games.

They call Jennings, "Fatty", but he is 5' 9", 155 lbs. There is some other reason, unknown to me, besides his stature. Maybe he likes fat girls. But I will tell you who should be called "Fatty" is Pete Bucolo. He is 5' 7", 245 lbs, now! He was stocky, even as a young man, but under 200 lbs. then.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
IND - 1: CF Fatty Jennings (22-5.1) 2: SS Kid Stevens (27-8.4) 3: 1B Pete Bucolo (41-4.1) 4: C Fred Smith (34-6.8) 5: LF Dick Thacker (28-7.6) 6: 3B Fred Boss (26-6.0) 7: RF Ed Slonim* (26-8.5) 8: 2B Dave Campbell (24-8.0)

DET - 1: 3B Ed Aldrich (25-6.8) 2: RF Fred Floyd (22-6.0) 3: LF Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: C Jimmy Babcock (32-6.9) 5: 1B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 6: SS Pat Dunbar (27-8.3) 7: CF Sam King (23-6.0) 8: 2B Ducky Foster (24-9.0)

Won - 14 to 0

Rice allowed 4 hits, 5 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit. It was his 4th shutout of the season and 10th of his young career. The record for shutouts in a season is 6, set by Lou Townley (27-3.5) for Cleveland last year.

DeVaux gave us 13 hits, 8 walks and struck out no one.

We made 2 errors and the Hoosiers made 8 (half of them on throws to 3rd base from the outfield).

Ed Aldrich had a hit and 2 walks, scored a run and had an RBI. Fred Floyd did not get a hits, but scored twice and had an RBI. Al Lewis walked 3 times, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. Sam King had 3 hits and a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Ducky Foster had 3 hits and scored 2 runs.

Liberty League:
Kansas City (2) at Cleveland (12): Lou Townley (27-3.5) (11-12) over Al McClaughry (25-5.6) (15-9). Townley allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. 1B Gussie Byrne (29-4.4) broke his thumb in a collision at home and will miss about 3 weeks.

Louisville (0) at Pittsburgh (10): Whitey Mathews (26-4.1) (16-8) over Miah Turner (28-5.3) (16-8). Mathews allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. It was his 3rd shutout of the season. He and Detroit's Al Rice are the only pitchers with more than 1 in the Liberty League. SS Bill Baker (27-3.6) hit a double and 2 triples, scored a run and had 5 RBIs.

Cincinnati at Boston was rained out.

Grand National Association:
Washington (13) at Omaha (8): Jiggs Niedermeyer (25-5.8) (3-6) over Tom Lee (31-6.0) (9-9). If you score him runs he will win: Niedermeyer has won his last 2 starts and the Monuments have scored him 29 runs in the 2 games. He has allowed 22. 2B Kitty Covington (24-5.4) had 3 hits with a double and a walk, stole a base, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. RF Dick Blake (28-6.7), who is among the leaders in the GNA in batting, will miss a month with a pulled hamstring.

Indianapolis Hoosiers (22-38 .367 20.5 GB in 7th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (41-16 .719 in 1st place)

Al Conradt, Ind. (25-4.1) (R 4-16 5.34 10.9-4.3-3.8 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Fred McDonough, Det. (21-5.0) (L 5-1 2.82 7.7-2.6-2.6)

We are 4-0 against Conradt this season, scoring 30 runs in the 4 games.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
IND - 1: CF Fatty Jennings (22-5.1) 2: SS Kid Stevens (27-8.4) 3: 1B Pete Bucolo (41-4.1) 4: C Fred Smith (34-6.8) 5: RF Ed Wakefield* (29-5.8) 6: LF Dick Thacker (28-7.6) 7: 3B Fred Boss (26-6.0) 8: 2B Bill Lawson (32-6.9)

The 1st ball hit to Ingling at 2nd was turned into an error, so his jinx is covered there....unbelievable! He's been given 2 Gold Gloves, but he is playing with a Lead one instead.

Conradt just shut us down all day. We did not score until the 8th inning, but it looked like we might stage a comeback when the 1st 3 men reached base. Tom Morgenthal came up to bat and scalded a line drive into right for a sure hit, except that is was not a hit. Ed Wakefield made a spectacular catch. Our base runners were caught by surprise and BOTH were caught off base for a triple play. Unbelievable! 2nd triple play this season; one for us and one against.

Lost - 6 to 2

McDonough allowed 12 hits, 4 walks and struck out 7.

Conradt gave us 9 hits, no walks (NONE!!) and struck out 4.

Sam Cowan (33-5.1) says he's ready to give it a try, so he'll be in there today. Patsy Roberts (35-5.5), who had 3 hits yesterday, will go back to Syracuse until the next injury.

Indianapolis Hoosiers (23-38 .377 19.5 GB in 7th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (41-17 .707 in 1st place)

Billy Simonsen, Ind. (24-8.0) (R 11-5 3.42 10.7-3.3-2.9 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Ed Price, Det. (25-5.7) (R 7-1 2.86 9.1-2.1-3.4)

We beat Simonsen, 7 to 4, in Indianapolis in our only meeting thus far. He has allowed 13 home runs this year, but all of them in tiny Seventh Street Park. His ERA at home is 3.96, but on the road it is 2.38.

LINEUPS (* = LHB # = SHB)
IND - 1: 3B Fred Boss (26-6.0) 2: SS Kid Stevens (27-8.4) 3: 1B Pete Bucolo (41-4.1) 4: C Fred Smith (34-6.8) 5: RF Ed Wakefield* (29-5.8) 6: LF Dick Thacker (28-7.6) 7: CF Ed Slonim* (26-8.5) 8: 2B Dave Campbell (24-8.0)

DET - 1: 2B Ducky Foster (24-9.0) 2: RF Fred Floyd (22-6.0) 3: LF Al Lewis* (23-9.1) 4: 1B Sam Cowan (33-5.1) 5: C Jimmy Babcock (32-6.9) 6: 3B Dave Odekirk# (24-6.5) 7: CF Ren Dunbar (25-6.8) 8: SS John Ingling (29-4.6)

The only fella to reach base for us in the 1st 3 innings was Sam Cowan on a hit, but Jimmy Babcock promptly bunted into a double-play.

The Hoosiers did not get their 1st hit until the 4th inning, but their 2nd one came immediately after that and left the park for a 2-run home run by Pete Bucolo, his 3rd of the season, 1st away from home.

The game went into the 9th tied at 3. Dick Thacker led off the top of the inning with a bloop single into right. Ed Slonim bunted him over to 2nd. Dave Campbell then hit a line drive single into right and Thacker rounded 2rd and headed for home. It looked like Fred Floyd would have a good chance to throw him out, but his throw was nowhere near home and the Hoosiers tool the lead, 4 to 3. Campbell took 2nd on the error, but Price got the next to hitters out. to end the inning.

Sam Cowan grounded out weakly to lead off the bottom of the 9th. Jimmy Babcock hit one hard, but nevertheless also grounded out. Dave Odekirk came up and struck out to end the game.

Lost - 4 to 3

Price allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3.

Simonsen gave us 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit.

We made 5 errors and the Hoosiers made 3.

Nobody had more than one hit for us. Al Lewis hit a double and had an RBI. John Ingling hit a double, drew a walk and scored a run, but also made another error.

Liberty League:
Louisville (6) at Pittsburgh (9): Bill Henrichs (30-7.4) (1-0) over William McLeod (30-5.6) (9-11). C Wilson Wendling (28-4.1) had 4 hits with a double and a triple, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. For the Bourbons, LF Pete Armstrong (22-4.6) had 5 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.

Cincinnati (2) at Boston (5): Freddy Wood (33-6.3) (6-10) over Charlie Branham (29-4.2) (16-7). Wood allowed 8 hits, 3 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he had 2 hits and an RBI.

Kansas City at Cleveland was rained out.

Grand National Association:
Brooklyn (4) at Omaha (1): Al Green (26-3.8) (15-10) over Lee Sprague (29-3.5) (13-15). Green allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. Sprague allowed 11 hits, no walks and struck out 2. 2B Reddy Daley (25-6.8) had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBIs.

Buffalo (4) at Milwaukee (10): Zachary Buchanan (28-4.0) (6-4) over Cal Wright (27-4.5) (2-6). Buchanan allowed 6 hits, 6 walks and struck out 5.

Washington (2) at St. Louis (3): Con Arnold (25-6.3) (9-11) over Ed Bush (29-5.3) (12-15). Arnold allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. Bush allowed 7 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5.

Providence (7) at Chicago (8) in 12 innings: Skyrocket Howard (24-5.4) (14-7) over Tom Ashton (25-5.2) (11-10). The Colts scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game, both teams scored in the 11th and with 2 outs and the bases loaded in th bottom of the ninth and a full count on RF Candy Simpson (30-6.8), Ashton let loose one high and away to end the game. He has now lost 4 in a row and 7 of his last 8. 2B Eb Provost (25-4.6) had 4 hits and a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs.

Elsewhere:
Down in the International League (A), Toronto and London played a heck of a game. It went 18 innings. London scored twice in the 8th and once in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. Each team scored a run in both the 10th and 11th innings and each scored twice in the 12th! SS Ed Frost (27-6.5) finally won the game for London with an RBI single in the bottom of the 18th. Jimmy Euler (28-5.5) (13-5) got the win with 6 shutout innings of relief. Why he is not pitching in Indianapolis, I have no idea. He was their best pitcher last year, going 22-19 with a 2.38 ERA for a last place team, but is London's best pitcher this year. He must have ticked off Pete Bucolo somehow.

2B Will Harrington (23-5.0), our 3rd round pick this past December, came down ill after Syracuse's game yesterday at Troy and before the sun rose this morning he had passed from what they are calling typhoid fever. He was not married, so I sent his mother a check for burial services. Syracuse was already short of players and now they have no backup middle infielder at all and there are none to be found unemployed in the whole country and the stupid trade deadline won't let me procure one from another club.

Grand National Association:
Washington (14) at St. Louis (6): Jiggs Niedermeyer (25-5.8) (4-6) over Ed Copeland (23-6.0) (7-13). For his 3rd straight start, the Monuments score at least 13 runs for Niedermeyer, who does not disappoint. At bat, he had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 1B Fred Livingood (26-6.4) had 3 hits with his 6th home run of the season, drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. Copeland walked 10 in 8 innings.

Brooklyn (13) at Omaha (1): William David (26-3.6) (13-9) over Tom Lee (31-6.0) (9-10). David allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. SS Charlie Smith (31-5.6), an ex-Mutual, had 3 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. For the Mutuals, LF Tom Duncan (24-6.6) pulled a muscle and will miss about 2 weeks.

Buffalo at Milwaukee and Providence at Chicago were rained out.
