That's correct ... Smith was pre-prime but he was never in the fight. Win for Armstrong jumped him back up so he may get one last shot at glory.

In an IBF title eliminator fight Joe Butler (7/4) (35-9-3) scored a UD12 over Young Hank Griffin (6/11) (12-2-2) (pre). Butler never really had any trouble but was cut over the right eye in the 4th. It was reopened a couple of times but he stayed away from Griffin the last couple of rounds. I had it 118-110. The official judges had it 116-113/118-110/118-110.
In the co-feature, Young Mitchell (UR/7) (14-1) lost the USBA title to Al McCoy II (UR) (14-0) by way of a UD12. Mitchell just never showed up for this fight and paid the price. He was knocked down twice and I had it 119-110. The official judges had it 117-111/117-111/117-112. Other fights on the card MW - Kid Carter (40/35) (14-13-4) KO4 Joe Thomas (43/56) (16-7-4) LW - William Parker (UR/37) (12-1-2) MD10 Jack Daly (105/107) (10-12-1) (parker at pre) FW - Will Curley (10/8) (21-9-3) TKO1 Dick Mills (61/68) (10-9) (Mills at pre) HW - William Hague (19/18) (18-2) KO5 Gus Ruhlin (75/83) (17-18-5) (ruhlin at post, Hague at pre) |

Tommy Ryan (6/CH) (43-3-1) regained the title for the first time since 1908 with a UD15 over Billy McCarthy (CH/8) (30-15-4) and won the WBC Middleweight title. Ryan controlled the fight as McCarthy's right eye started swelling as early as the second round. McCarthy caught Ryan late in the 8th round and Ryan went down but bounced right back up and probably kept it only a 10-9 round. Ryan went back to work controlling the rest of the fight. I had it 146-140. The official judges had it a bit closer, the two champ bias judges had it 144-142 and 143-142, while the other judge had it 145-140. Ryan had lost his last 3 title fights. He has still yet to lose a non-title bout. Other notables LW - Willie Fitzgerald (12/10) (20-1-3) (pre) dominated Sid Stagg (UR) (11-3) (pre) to score a UD12 to retain the CBU Lightweight regional title. Stagg was down in the 6th and Fitzgerald was penalized a point in the 10th after 4 warnings. I had it 117-110. The official judges had it 116-111/115-112/117-110. LW - George Keys (32/33) (14-0-2) (pre) fought to a DRAW10 with Ed Jessop (81/81) (7-7-4) (pre) . Keys stays unbeaten thanks to Jessop taking the last 3 rounds off. I had it 96-96. The official judges had it 98-95/95-96/96-96 with Keys winning the last 3 rounds on all the cards. HW - In a club fight Joe Coyne (UR) (9-0) (pre) stayed unbeaten with a UD8 over Jim Cameron (UR) (7-2-1) (pre) despite getting cut badly over his right eye in the 6th. I had it 79-74, while the official judges scored it 77-76/78-75/78-74. Other fights FW - Benny Yanger (17/13) (20-3) KO8 Monk Newsboy (71/78) (11-12-2) (yanger at pre) BW - Watty Austin (33/27) (17-14-3) KO1 Young Johnson (61/66) (9-12-1) (johnson at pre) |

It's good to see Tommy back at top where he belongs.

I agree he has been one of my favorites of the LBA ... If Dillon gets to 33 straight wins ... Ryan will step up to fight him for the 34th.

Talk about a mega fight right there. To bad for Dillon, Jack Dempsey is going to put a end to that streak soon enough.

Excellent stuff as usual Mike.
Agree with Romy, it's good to see Ryan back in the mix after being 'strapless' for three years. |

Breaking News from Mexico
Reports are coming in that Aurelio Herrera has won his first official title defense. More info later but from what we are hearing it's good to be the champ in a close fight!

WOOO, go Herrera. That was his first successful title defense overall right and not just of this reign?

Aurelio Herrera (CH) (23-9) made his first successful title defense scoring a SD15 over Battling Nelson (21/24) (26-16-1) keeping his IBF LW title belt. The first five rounds were very close then Nelson dropped the champ in the 6th. Herrera's left eye started to swell also. Herrera battled back winning two out of the next three rounds, then dropping Nelson in the 10th. That seemed to help Nelson though as he took over the last 5 rounds even dropping the champ again in the 14th. When the final bell sounded it appeared Herrera had let down his fans again. I had it 143-140 in favor of Nelson. The non champ biased judge also had it 143-140 in favor of Nelson. But both of the champ biased judges ruled it 142-141 for Herrera. Sometimes it pays to be the champion!!! Nelson filed for a mandatory rematch but was turned down by the commissioner due to his rank. The commissioner said for him to battle his way back into the top 15 and he'd order the rematch. Other notables Young Hundreds (UR) (10-2-1) (pre) retained his CBU BW title with a TKO9 over Ike Weir (44/52) (14-15-1) The bout was pretty even but a cut over the right eye of Weir kept getting worse until the ring doctor waved off the fight. I had it 76-76 at the stoppage. Young Sailor Burke (UR) (14-0) (pre) remained unbeaten with a TKO8 over Bill Curran (102/112) (11-9) (pre). Burke survived a rocky start and getting knocked down in the 1st, to stop Curran in the 9th. Curran was out on the ropes as the ref stepped in. I had it 67-66 Burke at the stoppage. Lupie Carranza (UR) (5-2-3) (pre) handed Silent Martin (UR) (5-1) (pre) his first loss with a TKO6. Martin was cut over the right eye in the second and it worsened to the point the fight had to be stopped. Carranza was down in the first and behind 49-44 on my scorecard when the bout was stopped. Other fights HW - Tommy Dugan (99/56) (15-10) KO10 Jack Boylan (12/44) (17-3-2) (boylan at pre) LH - Patsy Cardiff (10/7) (18-13-1) TKO9 Charles Cooley (12/19) (12-13-3) |

BW - Philadelphia Pal Moore (UR) (9-0) (pre/club) eeked out a SD12 over Charles Ledoux (12/17) (16-1) (pre) to win the EBU BW title. Very close fight the whole way with no cuts, swellings or knockdowns. I had it 114-114. The official judges had it 115-113/113-115/115-113. Other notables LHW - Seamon Johnson (21/18) (14-5) (pre) won a UD12 over Jo Li Bao (UR) (2-5-1) (pre/club/tc) for his first defense of the AABU LHW title. Johnson won almost every round on his way to the victory. I had it 119-108, official judges had it 119-109/117-110/119-108. LW - Phil Brock (UR) (8-0-2) (pre) remained unbeaten with an UD8 over Jack Grace (club) (9-16) (pre). Pretty easy fight for Brock. I had it 79-73. The official judges had it 78-74 on all scorecards. Grace moved to prime. Other fights WW - Mysterious Billy Smith (35/23) (20-5) SD10 Kid Graves (13/18) (19-6-2) (smith at pre, went to prime) FW - Joe Bernstein (39/29) (19-14-4) UD10 Abe Willis (35/44) (16-8-2) LH - Austrailian Billy Smith (60/57) (24-17-1) TKO7 Jewey Smith (49/58) (10-6-4) (j. smith at pre) |

HW - Jack Johnson (CH) (42-3) avenged one of his losses with a SD15 over Joe Jeannette (3/3) (24-3) for his first defense of the WBO HW title. It was a close fight with Johnson pulling ahead a bit when Jeannettes right eye started swelling in the middle rounds. Johnson seemed to just play it cautious in the last two rounds and it almost cost him. I had it 144-142. The official judges had it 144-143/142-143/144-141. Regional Title LHW - Billy McColl (45/24) (16-13) scored a KO7 to take the CBU LHW title from Dave Smith (UR) (12-2). Smith was winning the fight then he got cut over the left eye in the 7th. This seemed to have a bad effect on him as he wasn't the same after that. McColl dropped him twice in the 8th, the second time for good. I had it 68-66 at the stoppage. Other notables LW - Knockout Brown (UR) (14-0) remained unbeaten with a solid UD10 over Art Simms (UR) (12-2). Simms came out strong winning the first 3 rounds but then Brown's power shots started taking their toll and Brown dominated the rest of the fight. Simms was cut over his left eye in the 4th and knocked down in the 5th. I had it 96-93, the official judges had it 96-93/96-93/97-92. HW - Frank Mantell (16/10) (21-7) won a close bout with Bill Doherty (63/80) (15-16-2). It was a tight fight the whole way with no cuts or knockdowns. Both had some swelling. I had it 96-94, the official judges had it 96-94/97-93/96-94. Other bouts HW - Bill Lang (10/9) (23-7) KO5 Arthur Shock (86/93) (12-7-1) (shock at pre, moved to prime) WW - George Lavigne (8/8) (30-15-2) TKO7 George Milton (51/54) (10-8-1) |

LHW - Fred Russell (6/3) (19-8) stunned the boxing world again by scoring a KO8 over Jack Dempsey NP (1/2) (40-7) to advance in the IBF LHW tourney. Dempsey was dominating the fight winning every minute of the fight when he was knocked cold with a perfect right hook in the 8th. Russell had not been down or cut but his left eye was rapidly swelling shut when he landed the punch. This is Russell's second major upset earlier this year he beat Bob McCallister in defense of his WBA title belt. I had it 70-63 Dempsey at the time of the stoppage. Regional Title WW - Ted Kid Lewis (13/14) (16-2-1) (pre) fought to a DRAW12 with Jack Willis (38/38) (15-10-2) to keep his CBU WW title. Tough fight for Lewis as the veteran Willis pulled out all the stops, even knocking Lewis down in the 8th. Lewis rallied winning the next two rounds. I had Lewis winning the fight at 115-114. The official judges had it 114-114/115-114/114-115. Lewis moved to prime. Other Notables Two undefeated HW's stayed that way. HW - Frank Moran (12/10) (18-0-1) (pre) dominated Charley Robinson (71/82) (10-8) (pre) to stay unbeaten. Moran was cut over his left eye in the 10th and Robinson had his right eye swelling up from the 3rd round on but there were no knockdowns. I had it 98-92 as did all the official judges. HW - Jess Willard (UR)(6-0) (pre) scored his 5th KO in the 3rd round against Tony Vasser (UR) (7-5-2) (pre) to remain unbeaten. Vasser won the first round but Willard dominated the next 5 minutes. I had it 19-19 at the stoppage. Other fights HW - Frank Slavin (39/34) (28-16-1) TKO5 Bill Farnam (106/112) (17-20-1) LW - Herb McCoy (26/26) (15-1-2) DRAW10 Lockport Jimmy Duffy (27/27) (14-1-2) (both at pre) |
