Baseball Timeline 1976

The following events happened in real baseball circa 1976:

*Broadcasting magnate Ted Turner announces he is buying the Atlanta Braves.

*Seattle and Toronto are awarded expansion teams for the 1977 American League season.

*The newly renovated Yankee Stadium is dedicated.

*At Wrigley Field, Mike Schmidt of the Phillies hits four consecutive home runs and a single in a 10-inning, 18-16 victory over the Cubs.

*At Dodger Stadium, Cubs' center fielder Rick Monday makes headlines when he stops a flag burning. Monday later said, "If you're going to burn the flag, don't do it in front of me."

*Tigers' pitcher Mark "The Bird" Fidrych takes the league by storm. He wins 19 games as a rookie and starts the All-Star Game. His 2.34 ERA leads the AL.

*Houston knuckleballer Joe Niekro hits his first and only major league home run May 29.

*The designated hitter is used in World Series played in even years. The Reds' Dan Driessen becomes the first NL DH.

*Hank Aaron hits his 755th and final home run of his career.

*Pitchers John "Blue Moon" Odom and Francisco Barrios of the White Sox combine to no-hit the A's.

*The Mets' Tom Seaver reaches 200 strikeouts for the ninth time in his career.

*Minnie Minoso, age 53, becomes a four-decade player when he appears in a series against the Angels. The White Sox legend singles off Sid Monge to become the oldest player to hit safely in the majors.

*Tommy Lasorda is named to succeed Walter Alston as Dodgers' manager.

*In less than a month, Oakland loses four stars to free agency--Bert Campaneris, Sal Bando, Gene Tenance and Rollie Fingers.

*Cincinnati's Big Red Machine completes a four-game sweep of the Yankees.

Phillies Unveil New Logo to Celebrate Nation's Bicentennial

The Philadelphia Phillies unveiled their new logo which is designed to help celebrate the United States' Bicentennial this summer.

The defending National League East champions plan to use the logo beyond this season.

In addition, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Pittsburgh will wear old-time style baseball caps as part of the celebration.

JIM National League East Preview

The following is a preview of the NL East for the upcoming 1976 season:

Chicago Cubs (Keith J.)
Coming off their best season in JIM history at 84-78, the Cubs are feeling like contenders. Changes in management have brought a new attitude. Rookie left-hander Ken Kravec has been handed the ball for Opening Day while sluggers Cliff Johnson, Rick Monday and Willie Montanez anchor the lineup. However, an upgrade at short stop may be the key.
Montreal Expos (Andrew R.)
Les Expos again hold the No. 1 overall pick in the June amateur draft. Yet, there is excitement north of the border. Last year's top draft selection Andre Dawson will start the season in center field after just 58 games in the minors. Dawson joins former first-rounders Keith Hernandez and John Candelaria. Rookie Joe Nolan takes over the catching duties. Whether he handles the job may determine the fate of the Montreal pitchers.
New York Mets (Bryan S.)
A trio of left-handers anchor the Mets' pitching staff but it's right-hander Ed Figueroa who has everyone talking. New York has finally added some youth in the forms of Steve Braun and Disco Danny Ford to the lineup. This should ease some of the pressure off aging veteran first baseman Boog Powell. But, is 35-year-old Ray Sadecki really this team's closer?
Philadelphia Phillies (Rick B.)
The Phils are determined to prove last season's division title wasn't a one-shot deal. Philadelphia liked what it saw of right-hander John Denny in spring training. A healthy Phil Garner returns from an injury suffered in game one of the playoffs. Garner, nicknamed "Scrap Iron" by his teammates, joins boppers Greg Luzinski, Oscar Gamble and Larry Hisle in igniting the Bicentennial Candle offense.
Pittsburgh Pirates (Paul F.)
After three straight NL East flags the Pirates slid to fourth place a year ago. While its offense still boasts the likes of sluggers Richie Hebner, Willie Stargell and Al Oliver, Pittsburgh's pitching may again do the Bucs in. Rookie Rob Dressler joins veterans Dock Ellis, Luke Walker and Fred Cambria. Righty Tom Griffin will also get his share of starts.
St. Louis Cardinals (Matt F.)
The Redbirds improved by 15 games last summer and finished just one behind Philadelphia. St. Louis lost All-Star catcher Ted Simmons to a fractured hand in spring training. That means the Cardinals open the season with creaky veterans Joe Torre and Andy Etchebarren behind the mask. Meanwhile, speed demons Lou Brock and Davey Lopes set the table for budding stars Cecil Cooper and Ellis Valentine. Left-hander Steve Carlton must return to his 20-win potential for St. Louis to fly.

JIM National League West Preview

The following is a preview of the NL West for the upcoming 1976 season:

Atlanta Braves (Mike F.)
Media mogul owner Mike F. just may have a team worth putting on his national cable superstation after all. The Braves won a franchise-record 92 games last season, up from only 69 the year before. Atlanta features five solid starters in Ron Reed, Dennis Leonard, Larry Christenson, Phil Niekro and Luis Tiant. Offensively, the Braves figure to hit well in the Launching Pad with a lineup that includes Ralph Garr, Dusty Baker, Rusty Staub and hot prospect Dale Murphy.
Cincinnati Reds (Tim L.)
The Reds have only had one losing season (80-82 in '72) in their history. However, Cincy fell to an even .500 last season. While starting pitchers Gary Nolan and Don Gullett were sharp last year, the Reds need aging veteran pitchers Fergie Jenkins and Dave McNally to reclaim past glory. Batting champion Ken Griffey is back. Catcher Johnny Bench and his .251 lifetime average have been an inconsistent disappointment.
Houston Astros (Dan V.)
Four consecutive seasons of more than 100 wins and two JIM World Series titles in that time span has made Astro fans expect a winner every year. Despite the fact NL MVP Joe Morgan and Cy Young winner Frank Tanana return, there are some cracks in the foundation. Houston has two new starters (Bob Knepper and Ray Corbin) in the rotation. Buzz Capra, a 22-game winner a year ago, couldn't find the plate in spring training and now resides in the bullpen. World Series game seven winner Larry Dierker starts the year on a minor league rehab assignment. That means the offense led by Morgan must carry the load.
Los Angeles Dodgers (Marcus F.)
The Dodgers went from 95 wins to 62 in just one season. The LA freefall is directly attributed to a lackluster offense that hit just .248 and produced one of the league's lowest run totals. Rookie Ruppert Jones has taken over center field from perennial Gold Glove winner Willie Davis. The 35-year-old Davis will move to right, the position vacated by the retired Roberto Clemente. Pitching again figures to be the Dodgers' strength. Right-hander Don Sutton anchors a staff that is leaning heavily on youngsters Tom Underwood, Ken Brett and Sandy Vance. Former Cy Young Award winner Bill Singer is now in the bullpen.
San Diego Padres (Dan S.)
The Fathers continue to win more games each season. San Diego took home 88 victories and third place a year ago. The Padres are now considered a contender mainly due to their potent offense. The hitting stars of the show include infielders George Brett, Lee Lacy and Dan Driessen along with outfielders Jim Rice and George Hendrick. But, pitching will determine the Padres' fate. Right-hander Gary Ross is coming off a spectacular spring. He joins 19-game winner Dave Goltz and 18-game winner Doc Medich. Rookie Mark Lemongello may take the fourth slot in the rotation.
San Francisco Giants (Brandon N.)
The Giants won 17 more games last season than they did in 1974. San Francisco's starting rotation features the promising young arms of Steve Rogers, Jim Barr and Bob Forsch. Skip Lockwood appears to be a lock-down closer. Now it's up to the San Francisco offense to take some Giant strides. Twenty-seven-year George Foster appears ready for the offensive yoke. However, the Gold Glove center fielder needs help from the likes of Bobby Bonds, Ken Henderson and Gary Thomasson. Does oldster Willie McCovey have one last productive season in him?

JIM American League East Preview

The following is a preview of the AL East for the upcoming 1976 season:

Baltimore Orioles (Dan V.)
The Birds have averaged 111 wins per season since the JIM began in 1970. They've won the East flag all six times. They've played in five World Series. The Orioles' starting staff is deep. Right-handers Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan are balanced by lefties Jon Matlack and Ken Holtzman. The offense has a nice mix of power and speed. The bench is deep and talented. Yet, Baltimore has flown the JIM Championship banner just twice. Perhaps those Oriole fans are spoiled after all.
Boston Red Sox (Paul F.)
The Bosox have finished as runners-up two straight seasons. As is its tradition, Boston runs on offense. Reggie Smith, Carl Yastrzemski, Ron Cey and George Scott form a potent middle of the lineup. If veteran starters Gaylord Perry, Jim Lonborg, Bill Bonham and Bill Lee can get the game to closer Sparky Lyle, the Red Sox should win at least 90 games.
Cleveland Indians (Rick B.)
Is this the year all the high draft picks pays off for the Tribe? Dave Parker, Mike Schmidt and Robin Yount could all be ticketed for stardom. Waiver wire castoff Willie Horton may have some magic left in this bat. Yet, it all comes down to pitching. Can Dennis Eckersley, J.R. Richard and Rick Langford lead the Indians to victory?
Detroit Tigers (Matt K.)
Center fielder Fred Lynn has been one of the JIM's top players in his first two seasons. The former USC star has a pair of Most Valuable Player trophies to shine. Yet, how long before teams simply pitch around Lynn to get to the rest of the weak Tiger lineup? The pitching staff has been as unpredictable as the Detroit auto industry.
Milwaukee Brewers (Tim L.)
The Brew Crew has never finished higher than fourth. That only happened once; Milwaukee has been fifth twice and last three times. The Brewers will start three southpaws--Mike Flanagan, Mike Caldwell and Doug Rau--in its rotation. Is this the year former No. 1 overall draft pick Dave Winfield lights it up? Flashy switch-hitting short stop Gary Templeton should be fun to watch.
New York Yankees (Brandon N.)
Three seasons ago the Yanks won 108 games. Last year New York bottomed out with just 57 wins. What gives? Age mostly. Father Time caught up with the Yankees quickly. Thus, the Bronx Bombers are clearing out the old and ushering in the new. That means recent draft picks such as Rick Sutcliffe and Jerry Remy should get plenty of chances. Team captain Thurman Munson has taken the baton from outfielder Bobby Murcer as the Yankees' best player.

JIM American League West Preview

The following is a preview of the AL West for the upcoming 1976 season:

California Angels (Marcus F.)
Despite finishing dead last in the division, the Angels may have their prayers answered. Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, California's first-round draft pick, has so impressed team officials that the quirky right-hander will be the opening day starter. Fidrych leads a revamped pitching rotation that averages just 23.5 years of age. Center fielder Mickey Rivers hopes to put his injury woes of last season behind him. Second baseman Jorge Orta also needs to get back his offensive mojo.
Chicago White Sox (Mike F.)
For the second time in its existence, Chicago collapsed during the September stretch run and was overtaken by Oakland. Thus, the White Sox are out to build a marathoner's kick. John "The Count" Montefusco has moved into No. 1 starter status. Following him are left-handers Tommy John, Jerry Reuss and Rick Waits. Rookie Jack Clark joins fellow prospect Jason Thompson in adding strength to the Chisox lineup. Third baseman Bill Melton appears to be on the downside of his career.
Kansas City Royals (Bryan S.)
The Royals have gone the way of former Cy Young Award winner Paul Splittorff. After winning the honor in 1971, Splittorff has slipped mightily and so has KC. Can he find his way and the strike zone again? Eric Rasmussen returns after a surprising 21-win season. Rick Burleson and Frank White provide a solid double play combination. However, Royals' brass is concerned with the decline of 34-year-old Dick Allen. The JIM's all-time leading home run leader has hinted at early retirement.
Minnesota Twins (Matt F.)
Right-hander Bert Blyleven has won 20 or more games for five consecutive seasons. Jim Kaat and Jim Perry have also been strong. Minnesota's success may hinge on finding a dependable No. 4 starter. Meanwhile, Rookie of the Year Lyman Bostock returns along with Rod Carew and Richie Zisk. Doug Decinces is set to take over at third.
Oakland A's (Keith J.)
A notoriously slow starting team, the A's flew by the Twins and White Sox during the final month of the season to grab their first divisional title since 1971. Left-hander Vida Blue remains Oakland's ace. Rollie Fingers has emerged as one the league's top closers. Switch-hitting rookie Rodney Scott takes over the leadoff spot. The biggest question mark in the Bay area remains Reggie Jackson's .225 average.
Texas Rangers (Dan S.)
Texas won 84 games yet wound up fifth in perhaps the JIM's toughest division. Chris Chambliss, Ben Oglivie and Graig Nettles remain at the forefront of Texas' lefty-dominated lineup. Late-season callup Chet Lemon will add a right-handed bat. However, the question remains as to whether Lemon will play third base or the outfield. Burt Hooton and Jim Palmer are the Rangers' big guns on the mound. If Texas is to return to the playoffs, right-hander Rick Reuschel must revert to top form. Reuschel was a disappointment after the Rangers dealt popular short stop Toby Harrah to Montreal for the portly pitcher.

Orioles Deal Holtzman Back to Cubs

Some would say it's like breaking up The Beatles. Others would say it's time to start retooling after losing the Joy in Mudville World Series. Whatever the reason, the Baltimore Orioles have traded veteran pitcher Ken Holtzman to the Chicago Cubs.

The 30-year-old Holtzman has been part of a lethal Oriole starting rotation that has played in the last four JIM World Series. The left-hander carries a lifetime 121-61 record to Chicago. In addition, the one-time All-Star threw a no-hitter in 1972.

In return Baltimore got a younger southpaw, 22-year-old Scott McGregor. The Inglewood, California native was the 12th overall pick in last June's amateur draft. It is uncertain whether McGregor will start the season in Triple-A ball, replace Holtzman in the Baltimore rotation or find a spot in the bullpen.

Meanwhile, Holtzman returns to the team that originally had him. Born in St. Louis, Holtzman pitched collegiately for the University of Illinois before turning pro by signing with Chicago.

Holtzman came to the Orioles in a three-way trade that involved the Cubs and Oakland A's at the trading deadline during the 1971 season.

The left-hander won 20 or more games four straight seasons. Holtzman teamed with Tom Seaver, Jon Matlack and Nolan Ryan as the winningest rotation in JIM history. He was 16-8 with a 2.97 ERA last season.

Defending JIM Champs Open at Cincinnati

The defending Joy in Mudville League champion Houston Astros open their season at Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium against the Reds.

Cincinnati traditionally opens JIM play since the 1869 Red Stockings were baseball's first professional team.

This year's Reds will send right-hander Gary Nolan to the mound. Houston starts last season's NL Cy Young winner Frank Tanana.

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Brewers host the New York Yankees in the American League opener.

The rest of the JIM teams will play Thursday.

Diamond JIM Notes: Milwaukee will begin the season without rookie sensation Gary Templeton at short. The 20-year-old will start the season on the disabled list with what's be described as a serious case of the flu . . . Former Baltimore pitcher Ken Holtzman returns to the Chicago Cubs, the team that traded him to the Orioles in 1971. Holtzman won 94 games in an Orioles' uniform. Holtzman, Tom Seaver, Jon Matlack and Nolan Ryan were a combined 401-142 in just over four full seasons together as the Baltimore starting rotation . . . Right-hander Mark "The Bird" Fidrych makes his much anticipated debut Thursday as his California Angels host defending AL West winner Oakland . . .St. Louis catcher Ted Simmons may be ready to play sooner than expected. Simmons fractured a hand during spring training . . . For the first time in JIM history a number of teams are experimenting with a five-man rotation.

Twins, Phillies Agree on Trade

The Minnesota Twins and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a Sunday trade that involved four players.

The Twins sent veteran pitchers Dick Woodson and Tom Hall to the Phillies for recent draft picks Gerry Hannahs and Billy Smith.

Woodson, 31, holds a career 36-30 record. The right-hander posted a 3.42 ERA in a five-year career.

Hall, 28, has a lifetime 21-11 mark with a 2.78 ERA.

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Hannahs was the second-round pick of Philadelphia in the 1975 amateur draft. Hannahs is a left-handed pitcher.

The 22-year-old Smith was the Phillies' fourth-round pick in 1974. He has been assigned to Triple-A and will play short stop at that level.
