MY LIFE IN 1954
EC's Scoring More in '54 Music-wise this is the pre-dawn days of rock and roll... the staid world of pop music was slowing putting a little beat in their music and doing some background vocal gyrations... the crooner days were numbered... one of the first songs I remember as being "different" was Jo Stafford's "Make Love to Me"... in the early weeks of 1954 Jo Stafford had been swapping the number one spot with Doris Day's "Secret Love"... Stafford's song was uptempo and lively and featured a vocal group singing nonsense words (Buh-Bah-Bah-Boom)... while Day's song was a gorgeous ballad... "Secret Love" had the top spot for two weeks in late February, lost it for a week to "Make Love to Me", regained it for a week... now Stafford has the upper hand for two weeks... since both of them are really good songs, I will play both of them for you. The top tune on the Billboard pop charts on March 20, 1954 was Doris Day's beautiful ballad "Secret Love"... here is the pretty and perky little lass singing her #1 song in the motion picture "Calamity Jane".. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KniqM8GOHc0 And now we will stimulate your adrenaline and animal instincts with a peppy little bit of early day borderline rock and roll from Miss Jo Stafford, who is trying to put the make on you guys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG5Brc9KrS8 Last edited by Eugene Church; 12-30-2020 at 04:54 PM. |
