The team lost Centre Fielder Holly Hollingshead to the Boston Beaneaters via waivers. New Short Stop Ollie Beard showed signs of what could be a promising career ahead in his first full month of top level ball. He managed to collect 41 hits from 109 at bats during his 26 starts. He scored 22 runs with 21 RBI's for an average of .376. The NL voters were so impressed they voted him the Rookie of the Month for April. Pitching Batting |

April 1889
1st May 1889 The fans of the Spiders are again enjoying the strong early form of their team but are also hoping they can see this form for the whole of the season. The team managed to collect a record of 19-9 for the month of April. This sees them sit top of the AL table with a 2 game lead. Series Results 3-0 on the road to the Chicago White Sox 3-0 on the road to the Washington Nationals 3-0 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics 2-2 at home to the Boston Americans 2-1 at home to the Louisville Colonels 1-2 on the road to the Baltimore Orioles 2-2 at home to the Detroit Tigers 1-2 at home to the Philadelphia Athletics west 2-0 to start a home series against the Baltimore Orioles Short Stop Ed McKean has suffered a slight blip to his season as he will be laid up with asprained knee. He will be missing 2 weeks of the season with this injury. Pitcher Jim McCormick joined a very select club this month after he picked up his 250th win. This puts him in the rarified air with only the win leader Jim Britt for company. Saying that he has a way to go before he can catch him as Britt has 357 wins currently. First Baseman Roger Connor continues to prove to be the star on the team. April saw him collect 36 hits from 108 at bats during 28 games. He scored 28 runs with 20 RBI's for an average of .333. April 1889
1st May 1889 The fans of the Tigers are a little shocked as well as having big smiles on their faces after they saw a month from their team that they could only dream of in previous seasons. The team managed to win 17 of their 29 games and have moved into the top half of the table in 3rd place, 2.5 games behind the leaders. Series Results 1-3 at home to the Baltimore Orioles 3-0 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics 2-1 on the road to the Washington Nationals 4-0 at home to the Chicago White Sox 0-3 on the road to the Boston Americans 2-1 on the road to the Louisville Colonels 2-2 on the road to the Cleveland Spiders 1-2 at home to the Washington Nationals went 2-0 to start a home series against the Louisville Colonels The team picked up Left Fielder Bill Krieg from the Baltimore Orioles via waivers. The pitching finally clicked in April and this helped the team to its good start. Frank Meinke was the top starter during April picking up 7 wins from 10 starts. He pitched 84.2 innings to give up 68 hits and 20 earned runs for an ERA of 2.13. He was also voted the AL Pitcher of the Month due to these figures. Pitching Batting |

1st May 1889 The fans of the Colonels have had to sit through a complete horror show of a month from their team. The team managed to win only 6 of the 26 games they played to start this season and it leaves them rock bottom of the AL table, 12 games behind the leaders. Series Results 1-2 at home to the Washington Nationals 1-2 on the road to the Boston Americans 1-2 on the road to the Chicago White Sox 1-2 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics 1-2 on the road to the Cleveland Spiders 1-2 at home to the Detroit Tigers 0-3 at home to the Baltimore Orioles 0-3 at home to the Chicago White Sox went 0-2 to start a road trip to the Detroit Tigers Third Baseman Deacon White has started to show his age this year and it was no surprise to the team or the fans when he was diagnosed with a hamstring strain that will keep him out for 3 weeks. The team picked up Short Stop Tom McLaughlin from the Baltimore Orioles via waivers. With the way the Colonels are playing it is a surprise when anyone finds any consistency. The one exception was Short Stop Henry Moore. Moore collected 41 hits from 102 at bats in 26 games. He scored 16 runs with 24 RBI's for an average of .402. Pitching Batting |

1st May 1889 The fans of the Giants are pleased with the steady start their team has provided them with. They are now hoping this can be built upon. The team went 13-13 during the month of April to move them into 4th place in the table, 4 games behind the leaders. Series Results 2-1 at home to the Cincinnati Red Stockings 1-2 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings 0-3 on the road to the Boston Beaneaters 2-2 on the road to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms 3-0 on the road to the St Louis Browns 1-2 at home to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys 1-1 at home to the Philadelphia Quakers (1 game to be re-arranged due to bad weather) 1-2 at home to the Boston Beaneaters went 2-0 to start a road trip to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys The injury count hurt the New York Giants this month as they lost both Left Fielder Ed Greer for 3 weeks of the month with a sprained knee and Second Baseman Bill Greenwood for 6 weeks with an oblique strain. It was a tough month for the Giants and as such we will not be highlighting any good performances. Pitching Batting |

Second Baseman Cupid Childs was excelllent in his first month of big time baseball. He collected 33 hits from 98 at bats during 25 games. He scored 18 runs with 13 RBI's for an average of .337. April 1889
1st May 1889 The fans of the Quakers are alarmed at the way the form at the start of this season has dropped away from the previous few years. The team managed a record of only 10-15 during April. This leaves them bottom of the NL table, 6.5 games behind the leaders The fans will hope this can be turned around. Series Results 2-1 at home to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys 2-1 on the road to the Boston Beaneaters 0-3 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings 1-2 on the road to the Cincinnati Red Stockings 0-3 at home to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms 2-1at home to the St Louis Browns 1-1 on the road to the New York Giants (1 game to be re-arranged due to bad weather) 1-2 at home to the Chicago White Stockings went 1-1 on the road to the St Louis Browns Starting Pitcher Gus Shallix suffered a blow to his season towards the end of the month as he tore his triceps. He will be in the treatment room for 2 months of the season. The team lost Left Fielder Walt Goldsby to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys via waivers. Despite the tough starts Short Stop Lefty Marr had a good month to start the season. He collected 32 hits from 103 at bats in 25 starts. He scored 17 runs with 9 RBI's for an average of .311 Pitching Batting |

1st May 1889 The fans of the Alleghenys are contented with the way the season has started. While the record of 14-14 for the month could be better the position of third place in the NL table has them pleased. The team trail the leaders by 4 games after the first month of the season. Series Results 1-2 on the road to the Philadelphia Quakers 2-1 on the road to the Cincinnati Red Stockings 2-1 at home to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms 2-2 at home to the Chicago White Stockings 2-1 on the road to the Boston Beaneaters 2-1 on the road to the New York Giants 1-3 at home to the St Louis Browns 2-1 on the road to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms went 0-2 to start a home series against the New York Giants There were a lot of changes to the squad during the first month of play. Firstly they lost Short Stop Irv Ray for 2 weeks of the month with a herniated disc before they also lost Third Baseman Ri Jones for 6 weeks with a fractured wrist. The team also made changes by swapping 25 year old Short Stop Al Myers with the Chicago White Stockings for 27 year old Third Baseman Jumbo Davis. The team also claimed 2 new players via waivers. They picked up Left Fielder Walt Goldsby from the Philadelphia Quakers and Right Fielder Frank Whitney from the Philadelphia Athletics. Short Stop Paul Radford put down a marker for the season during April. He picked up 36 hits from 103 at bats in 27 starts. This earned him 22 runs with 22 RBI's for an average of .353 Pitching Batting |

April 1889
1st May 1889 The fans of the Browns are a little worried with the way the teams form seems to have dipped at the start of this season. The team managed to gain only a 12-16 record during the month of April and it has left them sitting in 7th place in the NL table, 6 games off the leaders. Series Results 0-3 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings 2-1 on the road to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms 2-1 on the road to the Cincinnati Red Stockings 3-1 at home to the Boston Beaneaters 0-3 at home to the New York Giants 1-2 on the road to the Philadelphia Quakers 3-1 on the road to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys 0-3 at home to the Cincinnati Red Stockings went 1-1 to start a home series against the Philadelphia Quakers There was bad news for Short Stop George Shoch after his season was put on hold for 4 months with a broken hand. He is hoping he can come back stronger in the second half of the season. The bad start for the team was influenced by the way that all of the players were off their form during April. This means we will not be highlighting any star this month. Pitching Batting |

April 1889
1st May 1889 The change in ownership has not seen the fans have any change in form to enjoy as their favourites got off to another shaky start. April saw the team put together a a poor month with 10 wins and 17 losses. This sees them sitting 7th in the Al table, 8.5 games off of the leaders. Series Results 2-1 on the road to the Louisville Colonels 0-3 at home to the Cleveland Spiders 1-2 at home to the Detroit Tigers 1-3 at home to the Baltimore Orioles 1-2 at home to the Chicago White Sox 0-3 on the road to the Boston Americans 2-1 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics 2-1 on the road to the Detroit Tigers went 1-1 to start a home series against the Boston Americans Left Fielder Billy Hamilton will be spending some time in the treatement room after the picked up an intercostal strain. The expected time out is 4 weeks. The team picked up 2 Short Stops via waivers. They were Nin Alexander from the Philadelphia Athletics and Dave Drew from the Chicago White Stockings. The change of ownership has not improved the players form at all. With this in mind we will not be highlighting any performances this month. Pitching Batting |

May 1889
1st June 1889 The fans of the Orioles are a little worried about how their favourite team's form seemed to dip in May. The record of 10-17 has not hurt their position in the table much but has hurt their prospects of winning another AL pennant. They still remain in 4th place in the AL table but have fallen to 14 games behind the leaders. Series results Last game of series on the road to the Cleveland Spiders postponed due to bad weather 1-2 at home to the Detroit Tigers 2-2 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics 1-2 on the road to the Chicago White Sox 1-1 at home to the Washington Nationals 2-1 at home to the Louisville Colonels 2-1 on the road to the Detroit Tigers 0-4 on the road to the Boston Americans 1-2 at home to the Chicago White Sox went 0-2 to start the road trip to the Washington Nationals The team's Doctor is struggling to keep the teams injury list down and this is starting to show in the performances. For Short Stop Pop Smith it is really troubling as no sooner did he return from a lay off then he goes and picks up another injury in the very next game he plays. He will be missing for a further 2 weeks with a sprained finger. He is joined by star batter First Baseman Dan Brouthers on the sidelines after he picked up some shoulder soreness. Brouthers will be out for between 2 and 3 weeks. One piece of good news was the return of Catcher Joe Visner at the end of the month who will return to the lineup after a few days rehabing in single A. In a month where the starting pitchers struggled 1 of them stood out as head and shoulders over the others. Pitcher Toad Ramsey showed what can be done from the mound when you keep calm and play well. He managed to win 7 of the 9 games he started. He pitched 77.2 innings to give up 64 hits and 15 earned runs for an ERA of 1.74. Pitching Batting |

1st June 1889 The fans of the Americans enjoyed their teams play during May and they are hoping this can be maintained. The team put together an excellent 20-7 record during the month. The moved up a place in the AL table to 2nd and kept tabs on the leaders by being only 3 games behind. Series results Lost the final game of a road trip to the Washington Nationals 3-0 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics 3-1 on the road to the Detroit Tigers 1-2 on the road to the Louisville Colonels 1-1 at home to the Cleveland Spiders 2-1 on the road to the Chicago White Sox 3-0 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics 4-0 at home to the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 at home to the Louisville Colonels won the first game of a home series against the Cleveland Spiders First Baseman Jake Beckley continues to show that even at his young age he know exactly how to play big time ball. May saw him pick up 36 hits from 94 at bats during his 22 games. He scored 21 runs with 26 RBI's for an average of .381. These figures saw him voted the AL Rookie of the Month. Pitching Batting |

1st June 1889 The Beneaters continued to play average ball during May. This to the fans is good though as it is an improvement on the past couple of seasons poor form. The team put together a 13-14 record and also moved up a place in the NL table to 4th, to sit 7 games behind the leaders. Series results Won the final game of a road trip to the Cincinnati Red Stockings 1-2 at home to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms 2-2 on the road to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys 0-3 on the road to the Philadelphia Quakers 2-1 at home to the St Louis Browns 0-3 at home to the Chicago White Stockings 3-0 on the road to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms 2-1 at home to the New York Giants 1-2 at home to the Philadelphia Quakers won the first game of a road trip to the St Louis Browns Right Fielder Larry Twitchel is not normally the player you would expect to be the star of the show. His May was an indicator that perhaps he has started to find his feet in the big time. He picked up 40 hits from 125 at bats in 27 games. He scored 22 runs with 17 RBI's for an average of .320. Short Stop Herman Long put up some excellent numbers during May. He claimed 37 hits from his 111 at bats in 27 games. He scored 25 runs with 10 RBI's for an average of .333. 1st June 1889 The fans of the Red Stockings are hoping that May is the indicator of the way the rest of the season might go for their team. The record during the month was one of 17 wins and 12 losses. This has seen them close the gap on the leaders to 1.5 games as they sit poised in 2nd waiting to take their chance. Series results lost the final game of a home series against the Boston Beaneaters 4-0 at home to the New York Giants 2-1 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings 1-2 on the road to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys 0-4 on the road to the Philadelphia Quakers 3-0 at home to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms 2-1 at home to the New York Giants 1-2 at home to the St Louis Browns 3-0 at home to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys went 1-1 to start a road trip to the Philadelphia Quakers Their was a lot of player movement at the Red Stockings during May. Firstly they lost Left Fielder Ted Scheffler mid month to a strained oblique that will see him sidelined for 6 weeks. This was partially off set by the return from injury of Left Fielder Ed Beecher at the end of the month. The team was also involved in 2 trades during the month. The first trade saw the team send 24 year old Short Stop John Rainey, 24 year old minor league Right Fielder Ed Silch and 24 year old minor league Left Fielder Bill Smith to the New York Giants in exchange for 31 year old Pitcher John Murphy. The second trade saw 23 year old Right Fielder Joe Dowie depart for the Washington Nationals in exchange for 32 year old Centre Fielder Pete Hotaling. Right Fielder Hugh Duffy led the team forward during May as they built a strong month. He managed to collect 37 hits from 103 at bats during 27 games. He scored 20 runs with 21 RBI's for an average of .359. Pitching Batting |

1st June 1889 The Cleveland Spiders are the class of the AL this year but with a long way to go their fans are hoping they can show this all the way to the end of the season. The month of May produced an excellent 20-5 record for the team as they extended their lead at the top of the AL table to 3 games. Series results The final game at home to the Baltimore Orioles postponed due to bad weather 2-1 at home to the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on the road to the Louisville Colonels (a third game suspended in the 10th due to bad weather and will be finished at a later date) 4-0 on the road to the Washington Nationals 1-1 on the road to the Boston Americans 2-1 at home to the Detroit Tigers 3-1 at home to the Chicago White Sox 3-0 at home to the Philadelphia Athletics 3-0 at home to the Washington Nationals lost the first game of a road trip to the Boston Americans Short Stop Ed McKean continues to have an up and down season. He returned from injury early in the month only to find himself back on the sidelines at the end of the month after he bruised a wrist. He will miss a further 2 weeks of the season through this injury. The team's strong form was led by the pitching staff and especially starter Adonis Terry. Terry won all 8 of the games he started. He pitched 72 innings to give up 57 hits and 18 earned runs for an ERA of 2.25. These figures earned him the AL Pitcher of the Month award. Pitching Batting |

1st June 1889 The fans of the Tigers continue to enjoy their teams presence in the top half of the AL table even if the form during May saw a slight dip. The team picked up a winning record during the month of 14 wins and 13 losses. They fell to 3rd in the AL table 9.5 games behind the leaders. Series results Won the final game of a home series against the Louisville Colonels 2-1 on the road to the Baltimore Orioles 1-3 at home to the Boston Americans 1-2 at home to the Philadelphia Athletics 2-1 on the road to the Chicago White Sox 1-2 on the road to the Cleveland Spiders 1-2 at home to the Baltimore Orioles 3-0 on the road to the Washington Nationals 2-1 on the road to the Philadelphia Athletics lost the first game of a home series to the Chicago White Sox The teams better form is down to the improvements the batting has made. This was the case in the form of Right Fielder Mike Teirnan. Tiernan managed to collect 43 hits from 104 at bats in 27 games. He scored 21 runs with 31 RBI's for an average of .413.
