Columbia - Bantamweights - Round 1

We have a dozen fighters in this division, so the top 4 seeds receive the byes. They are last years tourney winner Miguel Lora, 3-1-0 (2), Yonnhy Perez 0-0-0 (0), Mauricio Pastrana 0-1-0 (0) and Jorge Elicier Juilo 1-1-1 (1).

Round 1:

Bernardo Caraballo 2-1-1 (1) vs Edilberto Julio 0-1-0 (0) -
Other than a 3rd round knockdown by Julio, this one was all Caraballo as he used a terrific jab and lightning combinations coupled with a stifling defense. Caraballo dropped Julio in the 11th to even the knockdown count then went on to earn the 145-138, 144-139 and 144-139 decision.

Pedro Rincon Miranda 1-1-0 (1) vs Julio Coronel 0-1-0 (0) -
After two thrilling even rounds, Miranda dominated the 3rd, then saw Coronel storm back in the 5th. Miranda responded with a huge 5th, dropping Corenel twice to earn the KO win.

Jose Sanjuanelo 1-1-1 (0) vs Harold Mestre 0-0-0 (0) -
Sanjuanelo dominated the first two rounds, marred by Mestre being cut accidentally by a butt to the head in the 2nd. Mestre came out with a sense of urgency, taking the 3rd then scoring the lone knockdown of the bout in the 4th before the cut reopened in the 5th to send the bout to the cards. The judges all had it 38-37 for the winner by unanimous decision, Mestre.

Jesus Salvador Perez 1-1-0 (1) vs Jorge Otero 0-1-1 (0) -
A back and forth bout with good action by one fighter then the other went the distance, with the judges having it 145-141 Perez and 144-143 (x2) for the winner by split decision, Otero.

Columbia - Bantamweights - Quarter-Finals

Quarter-Finals:

Miguel Lora 3-1-0 (2) vs Harold Mestre 1-0-0 (0) -
Lora was in for more of a fight than expected as Mestre kept things close throughout with a decent assortment of power shots while Lora outlanded him. Mestre was cut in the 4th, and the fight was stopped 3 times before the bleeding on his forehead was so bad that they had to halt it for the Lora TKO in the 12th round.

Yonnhy Perez 0-0-0 (0) vs Jorge Otero 1-1-1 (0) -
This was closer than the scorecards showed, but Perez took over from the 9th round with a knockdown, then punished Otero over the next two rounds before the referee halted it in the 11th for the TKO.

Mauricio Pastrana 0-1-0 (0) vs Pedro Rincon Miranda 2-1-0 (2) -
Miranda fought a valiant fight, taking control in and building a lead, but Pastrana plastered him in the 8th round and was landing power shot after power shot before Miranda's corner tossed in the towel to save their man by way of TKO.

Jorge Elicier Julio 1-1-1 (1) vs Bernardo Carballo 3-1-1 (1) -
A brilliant action bout that went back and forth with the fans on their feet most of the way! Julio dr4opped Carballo in the 8th round then piled it on before the referee halted the bout a bit prematurely for the Julio TKO win.

Columbia - Bantamweights - Semi-Finals

Semi-Finals:

Miguel Lora 4-1-0 (3) vs Jorge Elicier Julio 2-1-1 (2) -
After a razor thin first round, Lora dropped Julio in the 2nd and again in the 3rd. Julio rallied to dominate the next four rounds only to have Lora surge, taking 5 of the next 6 rounds on all three cards before scoring his third knockdown early in the 14th. He then pummeled a hapless Julio until the referee stepped in for the TKO.

Yonnhy Perez 1-0-0 (1) vs Mauricio Pastrana 1-1-0 (1) -
The first round was brilliant by both men, capped by a flash knockdown by Perez at the end of the round. Perez controlled the pace for the next few rounds, but Pastrana stormed back taking the 6th through 8th rounds with solid body work. Perez woke up again in the 9th then scored a brilliant bone rattling combination followed by a devastating uppercut to finish the job as time ran out in the round for the thrilling KO! Pastrana was up on one card and barely down on the other two when the end came.

Columbia - Bantamweights - Final

Final:

Miguel Lora 5-1-0 (4) vs Yonnhy Perez 2-0-0 (2) -
Lora dominated, landing 59.1% of his shots with a brilliant mix of shots throughout. His movement gave Perez fits, as he only landed 15.7% of his shots. Lora caught Perez rushing in early in the 12th round with a perfect uppercut that put Perez down for the count and sent the now 6-1-0 (5) Lora to his second straight World Tournament.

Columbia - Jr. Bantamweights - Quarter-Finals

With 7 warriors in this group we go to the Quarter-Finals with top seeded Sugar Baby Rojas 2-1-1 (2). Rojas was the last entrant in the World Tournament.

Quarter-Finals:

Alberto Castro 1-1-0 (1) vs Devis Perez 0-0-0 (0) -
All Castro in this one as he smothers Perez with a pair of knockdowns in the 4th, the final one for the KO.

Luis Bolano 0-1-0 (0) vs Robinson Quiroz 0-1-0 (0) -
Bolano opened a gash on the inside of the left brow in the 2nd, and tagged Quiroz with bombs over and over again in the 4th before the referee halted the bout for the TKO.

William Urina 0-0-0 (0) vs Juan Polo Perez 1-1-0 (1) -
Take out the two 1st round knockdowns by Perez, and another in the 13th, and the results would have been different as he earned the narrow 142-139, 142-139 and 142-140 decision over a game Urina.

Quarter-Finals:

After a close feeling out round Rojas dropped Perez twice in the 2nd round, the final on on a huge hook that had Perez stopped cold.

Alberto Castro 2-1-0 (2) vs Luis Bolano 1-1-0 (1) -
A high octane fight that saw both men rocked throughout, it was Bolano scoring the first knockdown then piling it on in the 7th for the come from behind TKO. Castro was up 59-56 (x2) and 59-57 through 6.

Columbia - Jr. Bantamweights - Final

Final:

Sugar Baby Rojas 3-1-1 (3) vs Luis Bolano 2-1-0 (2) -
Rojas and Bolano put on a show in this one, with both men letting it all hang out throughout. Rojas slowly creeped ahead despite a gash on the forehead of Bolano suffered in the 4th round. Bolano kept coming however and scored the lone knockdown of the fight in the 10th round, only to have the gash reopen so badly in the 11th that the fight was halted for the Rojas TKO! Bolano was up 97-94 on one card while the other two cards were 95-95. Rojas goes to his second World Tournament with a 4-1-1 (4) record.

Columbia - Flyweights - Quarter-Finals

We have 8 fighters in this one so will have all 8 men in action. Top seed Irene Pacheco, 3-1-0 (3) is the last entrant to the World Tournament.

Quarter-Finals:

Irene Pacheco 3-1-0 (3) vs Eduardo Pacheco 0-1-0 (0) -
Both men were incredibly accurate, but the favorite, Irene Pacheco landed twice as many shots, including the KO shot on an overhand right in the 8th round.

Prudencio Cardona 1-1-0 (1) vs Angel Priolo 1-1-0 (1) -
A good action bout that saw Priolo spring to the lead after 3 rounds only to have Cardona storm back then score two knockdowns in the 11th before the referee jumped in and wrapped his arms around Priolo for the TKO.

Carlos Tamara 0-0-0 (0) vs Francisco Tejedor 0-1-0 (0) -
A back and forth bout that saw Tejedor down in the 9th and 13th rounds before he dropped Tamara in the final frame to close the gap. The judges had it 143-141, 143-139 and 141-141 even for the Tamara majority decision.

Fidel Bassa 0-1-0 (0) vs Jair Jiminez 2-1-0 (2) -
A lot of fireworks in thei one, with Bassa dropping Jiminez in the 5th only to see Jiminez come back strong over the next few rounds, capped by a monster 9th round by Jiminez. Bassa never left his feet, but the ref stepped in just as Bassa's corner was about to toss in the towel for the TKO for Jiminez.

Columbia - Flyweights - Semi-Finals

Semi-Finals:

Irene Pacheco 4-1-0 (4) vs Jair Jiminez 3-1-0 (3) -
Pacheco knocked out Jiminez in 2 last time they fought. This one developed into a classic slug-fest with both men landing big shots. Jiminez went down in the 7th round but fought back well later in the round. Pacheco seemed to have found his stride from there, and had the lead on two cards when he was tagged hard by Jiminez in the 11th several times, going down late in the round. The referee was a bit quick when he halted the bout, but Pacheco was clearly hurt after that knockdown for the TKO upset by Jiminez!

Prudencio Cardona 2-1-0 (2) vs Carlos Tamara 1-0-0 (0) -
Two big rounds to open by Cardona went to waste as Tamara took over from there, dropping Cardona in the 5th before scoring the 6th round KO. Now the top 2 seeds have been eliminated.

Final:

Carlos Tamara 2-0-0 (1) vs Jair Jiminez 4-1-0 (4) -
Jiminez was cut early in the first round as both men went after one another savagely in a close round. Tamara edged a decent 2nd before the cut reopened in the third for the Tamara TKO. Tamara goes to his first World Tournament with a 3-0-0 (2) record.

Columbia - Jr. Flyweights - Quarter-Finals

We have 7 pugilists in the Jr. Flyweight division so top seeded Beibis Mendoza 2-1-0 (2) will receive the bye, while last years tourney winner and 2nd seeded Ronald Barrera 3-1-0 (2) will be in action.

Quarter-Finals:

Ronald Barrera 3-1-0 (2) vs Alfredo Toro 0-1-0 (0) -
Barrera was dominant against Toro, scoring well inside and sapping the leg strength of Toro early then cutting him in the 6th. Toro used his head intentionally in the 10th and opened a gash above the left eye of Barrera that was bleeding profusely and lost a point for it, but the fight was allowed to continue. The cut reopened in the 11th and the referee halted the bout, handing the fight to Toro by TKO. Officials at ringside overturned the decision however, calling this a No Decision, setting up a rematch. (My decision as I feel that a fighter shouldn't lose a bout due to a cut suffered by an intentional butt.)

Wilfrido Perez Valdez 0-1-0 (0) vs Agustin Garcia 1-1-0 (0) -
Garcia holds a 15 round UD over Valdez. Valdez came out on fire, dropping Valdez twice in the 1st round then laying a terrible beating on Garcia until Garcia's corner tossed in the towel to save their man.

Jhon Alberto Molina 0-1-0 (0) vs Rodolfo Blanco 1-1-0 (0) -
Molina was disqualified the last time they fought. Three fouls by Molina in this one, two low blows, in a fight he was dominating caused him yet another loss to Blanco, this time a 9th round DQ.

Rematch:

Ronald Barrera 3-1-0 (2) vs Alfredo Toro 0-1-0 (0) -
A fired up and angry Barrera thoroughly dominated Toro, dropping him 4 times before a cut suffered in the 8th round by Toro reopened to the point that the fight was halted for the TKO on cuts in the 13th round.

Columbia - Jr. Flyweights - Semi-Finals

Semi-Finals:

Beibis Mendoza 2-1-0 (2) vs Rodolfo Blanco 2-1-0 (1) -
Mendoza outlanded Blanco and landed the bigger shots throughout to dominate, but Blanco fought back valiantly, though without as much impact. Mendoza finally brought Blanco down twice in the 8th round, the final one for the count to move to the final round.

Ronald Barrera 4-1-0 (3) vs Wilfrido Perez 1-1-0 (1) -
A good back and forth bout that saw both men landing with bad intent came to a sudden end in the 8th when a gash opened on the forehead of Perez in the 3rd reopened, gushing claret into his eyes for the Barrera TKO.

Final:

Beibis Mendoza 3-1-0 (3) vs Ronald Barrera 5-1-0 (4) -
Barrera is the last entrant to the world Tournament and holds a 10th round TKO over Mendoza. A brutal slug-fest inside, though both men landed less than 20% of their shots, the punches landed were constantly stunning the other. Barrera struck first with a combo to drop Mendoza. Mendoza responded with a 9 count in the 4th. Back and forth they went with momentum shifts within rounds until the 8th round when Mendoza scored his second knockdown early then used a vicious killer instinct to put Barrera out on his feet when the referee correctly stepped in for the TKO. Mendoza improves to 4-1-0 (4) heading into his first World Tournament.

Columbia - Strawweights - Semi-Finals

With 4 fighters there will be no byes in this weight class.

Semi-Finals:

Miguel Barrera 0-1-0 (0) vs Juan Juanito Herrera 0-0-0 (0) -
A closer than expected bout that saw Barrera cut early, and after it reopened in the 5th, his corner was able to close it and keep it under control the rest of the way. Barrera closed strong to pull out the 145-140, 142-143 and 145-140 split decision.

Daniel Reyes 3-1-0 (2) vs Kermin Guardia 0-1-0 (0) -
The last time they met, Guardia was disqualified. This time Guardia kept it clean, starting fast then Reyes scored an 11th round knockdown. Guardia came back with an 8 count knockdown of the tourney winner from the previous season and seemed well in control of the bout when he was gashed on the forehead in the 14th round and the fight was halted for the TKO. Guardia had to have felt snake bit as he was up 125-122, 125-120 and 124-121 through the 13th round and was well ahead in the 14th as well when the cut happened.

Barrera lost on cuts last time out to Reyes, who won the entry on their bout. Barrera dominated in this one, dropping Reyes in the 11th, then again in the 12th for the KO! Barrera improves to 2-1-0 (1) and goes to his first World Tournament.

A small pool of fighters to report here, so the entire nation on one thread.

HW - Carl Davis Drummond 0-1-0 (0)

SMW - Henry Porras 1-1-1 (0)

MW - Tuzo Portuguez 0-1-0 (0)

LW - Francisco Campos 1-1-0 (1)

Final:

Victor Echegaray 0-1-0 (0) vs Bryan Vasquez 0-0-0 (0) -
A dull affair, though Vasquez worked his tail off to try and liven it. A clash of heads in the 13th ended the fight and sent it to the judges, where they scored it 115-114, 118-111 and 117-111 for the underdog Vasquez.
