Not the biggest update but I felt the old one was more orange than brown...

Yours are great! Gotta ask, do you have a Craig Biggio, Frank Thomas or Barry Bonds?

I think Biggio was done somewhere in this thread previously or maybe it was in LansdowneSt thread...
I haven't played yet past 1979 so I haven't done FG for those players, but I'll give them a try tomorrow if no one does.

Frank Thomas
I'd say more a color update since the results aren't different physically talking... Original first and redo second.

Barry Bonds
A second option... personally I think the skin color is more natural in this one.

Barry Bonds
[W]ith few exceptions, the more than three dozen athletes who appeared before the grand jury admitted taking steroids ... all to run faster, jump higher, hit the ball farther, and, ultimately, make more money. Some of the confessions were grudging and evasive. Others were extremely forthcoming. It came down to the same thing: Competitive sports, it turned out, was part mirage, a game of shadows. - Mark Fainaru-wada & Lance Williams, Game of Shadows
[On August 7, 2007], the sequoia of Major League Baseball records fell and the damnation of it was not that nobody heard it; it was that so few people cared. For all of his great skill, the most unimaginable achievement in the career of Barry Bonds is not that he broke the all-time home run record, but that he debased it. - Sports Illustrated, Tom Verducci I redid the Barry Bonds but the problem is the in-game weight of 228lbs. He's very bloated at that weight. The weight OOTP has is less than fangraphs (240lbs but an inch taller) and more than bRef (185lbs - prob last witnessed by Jim Leyland). To get an fg to look decent put him at 205 lbs. I'll see if I can appeal the in-game weight in the interest of getting a better looking facegen. Anyway, here's the current pack's Bonds at 228, then my fg at 228 and lastly, my fg at 205 lbs. I didn't bother trying to get a Pirates or early SF Bonds picture (a mustache one) as I think the weight would have to go down a lot in-game to make that work. |

Nice one bud - I put him in at 210 and it looks great, much better than the Mister Punkinhead at 228.

It bloats up pretty fast from 205 lbs to 220 lbs and beyond. At 205 lbs, if they redid it, players could even get a Pirates version to look decent. There is a judgement call for players whose weight varied over their career with facgen impact more important in my mind for OOTP rather than picking the highest weight possible which is where I see fangraphs leaning or the lower end of the range as bRef tends to lean. The middle-ground that is best for gameplay is where the weight ought to settle in such cases. They're good about reviewing such things on the database team though.
Sorry, AESP, I was making mine and hadn't realized you had posted until I clicked "post". |

Never thought to play with the weight... your second one sure looks great. I kept that in mind if I reach 1986 with OOTP22.
To be honest I doubt I will considering that I never did and I play since OOTP2007. No problem at all LansdowneSt your FG is better than mine...

LansdowneSt, I wonder if you could do something better with Jim Britt than what I did many years ago? There is no picture for him just a newspaper drawing (I guess it is) and as you can see my version of him looks nothing like him.

Jim Britt
Jim Britt was the only pitcher used by the Brooklyn Atlantics in 1872, pitching every inning of every game. The next year, 1873, he pitched almost every inning for the Atlantics, getting every decision but one, as player-manager Bob Ferguson pitched a few innings, going 0-1. Britt was believed to be 16 years old in 1872, the youngest player in the league, but that was based on incorrect biographical information. It is not clear when he was born or died, as the information traditionally attached to his name belonged to a namesake and not to him. A more likely candidate was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1849 and died there on August 21, 1882 but definitive proof that this was the ballplayer is still missing. - bRef Bullpen wiki
AESP, you're being way too hard on yourself WRT Jim Britt. For the only known picture of him, that one you did is a good one. I took your facegen, colored it and tweaked some proportions. The turned head always make an fg wider than it ought so I adjusted that while trying to keep the chin and jowl line as shown in the sketch. The birth year in OOTP is still tied to the debunked bio so I also adjusted him to be born in 1849 which is where the leading bio info of today has him (I also see he has an active family tree in ancestry.com with links to his census data in Kings County, NY [Brooklyn] so probably ripe for any SABR-affiliated readers to revisit him). This is one I'm ready to call "done" in my checklist but is also one I could futz with for another couple hours if I let myself. |

Someone wants to give another try to Larry Landreth? The current one in the database is based on a baseball card (I think I did it way back in the first project) and the FG is fine but a bit thin and yellow like a lot of my old works. There is a very good picture of him in the article linked that would give a better result but he had a very huge smile and I don't have the tools needed to remove it.
