EC's Still Full of Glee in '53

Hi, Hey and Hello, guys and dolls... I really got into music in 1953... we finally got our first TV... I faithfully watch the Lucky Strike Hit Parade every Saturday Night... the top 7 songs in the nation recreated by a music ensemble of singers and dancers... the seven top-rated songs of the week were presented in elaborate TV production numbers requiring constant set and costume changes... however, because the top songs sometimes stayed on the charts for many weeks, it was necessary to continually find ways of devising a new and different production number of the same song week after week... it was a tough job to do... the main singers were Dorothy Collins, Eileen Wilson, Snooky Lanson and Russell Arms... the show lasted until 1959... EC didn't miss many of the shows.

I also began listening to the Top 20 Songs every Saturday morning on WABB radio... I also got my first record player... only had about 10 songs... worn them out, y'all, yes I did... played both sides of the 45's... didn't buy albums at this time... you didn't often see albums... they were not a big deal in '53.

It's July, 1953... Percy Faith and his orchestra has had the number one song since May 16... this is its 8th straight week on top of the pop charts... "The Song from Moulin Rouge" from the movie "Moulin Rouge" starring Jose Ferrer and Zsa Zsa Gabor... I have already played this beautiful song for you several weeks back... so think I will play a couple of other big hits of the day.

American singer Frankie Laine sets the all-time United Kingdom record for weeks at Number One in a given year on the UK Singles Chart, when his hit singles "Answer Me," "Hey Joe!" and "I Believe" held the top slot for 27 weeks: a little over half a year... "I Believe", Number One for 18 weeks, also holds the all-time record for a single... 70 years later, both records still hold.

Frankie Laine and "I Believe" peaked at #2 on the US charts... it stayed #2 for three weeks.

In 1953 Eddie Fisher became "The Coca-Cola Kid" on the television show, "Coke Time" at a salary of one million dollars a year... can you believe that?... a million smackeroos a year.
Naw, EC never made that kind of money... my first part-time weekend job in radio was $2 an hour on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at KPBC in Port Sulphur, LA... that was in 1971... I went into radio full-time in 1972... made $125 a week doing the afternoon shift at WNSL in Laurel, Mississippi... naw, EC never approach the money Eddie Fisher made.

Why don't we listen to Eddie Fisher, too... here he is singing on his show sponsored by Coca-Cola... Eddie is gonna sing a great song "Anytime"... it was also a huge hit for country and pop great Eddy Arnold... please sit back, relax, sip on an ice cold RC Cola, nibble on a moonpie and enjoy the music... my apology to Coca-Cola, but EC is partial to RC Colas and moonpies.

New Yerby whipped the Wafford Eagles 7-1 to nail down the pennant... Jackson trimmed Joliet 6-3 and Stockdale dumped Dutton 8-5.

It was a shocker!... in fact, there were two shockers Sunday!... last place Avalon drubbed the pennant-winning Theodore Bobcats 8-4 in weekend play in the NIRL Second Division... runner-up Union Heights also saw their promotion hopes falter when they were upended by the Kinston Firebirds 11-0... and third place West Chester is still clinging to its slim promotion asperations... the Comets kayoed the Kofa Kings yesterday 5-1.

GATORS, SAINTS STILL FIGHTING FOR FIRST IN SI FIRST LEAGUE
The Guedon Gators and the St. Dominic Saints are still neck-and-neck in the South Island First League pennant race and they are headed for a photo finish... it is looking like the two just might have to have a postseason playoff to decide the title... the SI First League is a mangled mess at the bottom, too... two clubs are in dogfight to avoid being demoted next year... the bottom two teams in the SI First are relegated to the SI Second League at the end of each season... last place Des Allemands is definitely one of the teams... Labadieville or Claiborne will join them... the Pelicans and the Cardinals will have a showdown next Sunday to decide it... they will meet in the final game of the season... this weekend Guedon blanked Des Allemands 5-0... St. Dominic outslugged the Claiborne Cardinals 10-6... and Opelousas ripped Labadieville 8-4.

ACADIANS GAIN ON TIGERS IN SI SECOND LEAGUE RACE
The Meraux Tigers missed a golden opportunity to cinch the South Island Second League pennant... they were upended 8-5 by the fourth place Mystic Mariners, while second place Bar Harbor was zapping the basement-dwelling Bayou Bleu Blues 6-0 this weekend... Meraux's magic number is one win or one loss by the Acadians next Sunday afternoon... in case of a tie, the clubs will have a sudden-death playoff game for the title... in the other league game the third place Delacroix Cubs gained a big win, topping the firth place Chitamaca Moccasins 7-2... this kept Delacroix in the fight for second place and a possible promotion to the SI First League next year.
