Columbia - Middleweights
We have 5 fighters in the Middleweight division, so will start with a fight-in bout followed by the Semi's then the Final. The top seed is Rodrigo Valdez who is 4-1-0 (3) as he tries to earn his second straight berth in the World Tournament.
Fight-In: Dionisio Miranda 0-0-0 (0) vs Samuel Miller 1-1-0 (1) - Miller ended Miranda's dream of going farther in this tourney with a KO in the 3rd round: Semi-Finals: Rodrigo Valdez 4-1-0 (3) vs Samuel Miller 2-1-0 (2) - Valdez was well in control, dropping Miller in the 4th round then scoring two more in the fatal 10th before the referee called it a night. To the credit of Miller, even though out classed in this one, he fought his heart out, keeping close even though losing rounds. Edison Miranda 1-1-0 (1) vs Epifanio Mendoza 0-1-0 (0) - Miranda's lone win last tourney was a 1st round TKO over Mendoza. Again a dominant performance by Miranda, dropping Mendoza along the way two times before a cut suffered in the 12th became bad enough to end it half way through the final frame. Miranda was well up on all three cards at the time of the stoppage. Final: Rodrigo Valdez 5-1-0 (4) vs Edison Miranda 2-1-0 (2) - Miranda survived the full 15 rounds but lost a solid decision to Valdez the lone time they've met. Miranda showed a lot of heart, taking a single round but battling back until he was cut in the 11th then went down later in the round for the lone knockdown of the bout. Valdez, well up by then targeted the gash on the inside of the right brow and burst it open again in the 12th round for the TKO. |

Columbia - Jr. Middlweights
There are three fighters in the Jr. Middleweight division, so top seeded Joel Julio, 0-1-0 (0) receives the bye.
Semi-Finals: Juan Carlos Candelo 3-1-0 (0) vs Richard Gutierrez 0-0-0 (0) - Candelo broke open a close entertaining battle with 2 knockdowns in the 6th, then two more in the 8th as he earns the 8th round TKO. Final: Joel Julio 0-1-0 (0) vs Juan Carlos Candelo 4-1-0 (1) - Julio lost a hard fought MD 15 to Candelo that sent Candelo to the last World Tournament. This was a back and forth affair with momentum shifts seemingly every 2 rounds. Julio was well behind however when he dropped Candelo in the 10th then took a solid 11th. Candelo came back strong from there, taking the 12th and 13th, and Julio had to, and did take the final two rounds to pull out the 141-144, 142-142 and 144-142 draw. Rematch: Joel Julio 0-1-1 (0) vs Juan Carlos Candelo 4-1-1 (1) - Another bout that was close, no major cuts or bruises and neither man down as this one went to the wire again. I had Julio ahead 144-142 but the judges had it 144-141 Julio, 144-143 Candelo and 144-143 for the winner Julio who moves to his first World Tourney with a 1-1-1 (0) record. |

Columbia - Welterweights
We have 7 fighters in this division. That means that Newton Villarreal 3-1-0 (3) , the last years tourney winner will receive the bye.
Quarter-Finals: Edwin Cassiani 0-1-0 (0) vs Jaison Palomeque 0-0-0 (0) - Cassiandi dominated, dropping Palomeque 5 times before the fight was halted in the 14th round for the TKO. Jose Leonard Bermudez 1-1-0 (1) vs Ener Julio 0-1-0 (0) - After a pair of close rounds Bermudez took over, dominating the rest of the way, dropping Julio in the 6th then twice more in the 7th, the final one for the KO. Hugo Pineda 1-1-0 (0) vs Diego Castillo 0-1-0 (0) - A lot of fireworks in this one as Pineda was dominating then went down in the 6th. Castillo went down in the 9th, then three more times before the referee had seen enough carnage in the 12th round for the Pineda TKO. Semi-Finals: Newton Villarreal 3-1-0 (3) vs Hugo Pineda 2-1-0 (1) - Villarreal broke open a tight bout that saw him behind on two of three cards before dropping Pineda in the 13th, 14th & 15th rounds to secure the 144-139, 145-137 and 143-139 decision. Edwin Cassiani 1-1-0 (1) vs Jose Leonard Bermudez 2-1-0 (2) - Bermudez dropped Cassiani three times in the 1st round then again in the 8th and 10th rounds before two more in the 12th round before the referee finally halted it for the TKO. Final: Newton Villarreal 4-1-0 (3) vs Jose Leonard Bermudez 3-1-0 (3) - Villarreal stopped Bermudez with an 8th round KO the first time they tangled. Burmudez was dominant in this one until the 8th when Villarreal finally solved the puzzle and dropped his man twice in the 8th round enroute to the TKO win to move into his second World Tournament with a 5-1-0 (4) record. |

Columbia - Jr. Welterweights
We have a dozen pugilists in this division, so the top 4 seeds get a bye in the 1st round. They are Antonio Cervantes 7-1-0 (1), the current top dog, Juan Urgano 2-1-0 (2), Rafael Pineda 0-1-0 (0) and Nicolas Cervera 1-1-0 (0).
Round 1: Ricardo Torres 1-1-0 (1) vs Douglas Villarreal 0-1-0 (0) - A tight action packed bout that saw Torres drop Villarreal in the 4th then pile it on for the TKO. Carlos Maussa 2-1-0 (1) vs Jose Zuniga 0-1-0 (0) - Maussa pretty much dictated the pace of this one, with Zuniga showing signs of spunk at times. Maussa had the power edge though, dropping Zuniga in the 3rd then again early in the 6th for the KO. Roberto Ortega 0-1-0 (0) vs Dario Esalas 1-1-0 (0) - Terrific action by both fighters saw a razor thin fight ended abruptly with an over hand right for the KO by Ortega in the 12th. Cards were 105-104 Ortega on two cards and 105-104 for Esalas on the 3rd at the time of the stop. Jorge Luis Noriega Medrano 1-1-0 (1) vs Antonio Pitalua 0-0-0 (0) - a 6th round knockdown and cut by Medrano turned into an 8th round TKO when the cut, on the forehead, reopened into a torrent of claret. |

Columbia - Jr. Welterweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Antonio Cervantes 7-1-0 (1) vs Jorge Luis Noriega Medrano 2-1-0 (2) - Cervantes used the ring well, though he lost a point for his second low blow and 4th foul of the night in the 9th. Cervantes scored the lone knockdown in the 8th to cap a huge lead leaving Medrano having to scramble from the 9th on. He fought well, but not well enough to score the much needed KO, much less a knockdown as Cervantes won the comfortable 145-138, 144-140 and 146-138 decision. Juan Urango 2-1-0 (2) vs Roberto Ortega 1-1-0 (1) - Urango landed shots throughout the fight that would have knocked out lesser men, but Ortega's chin held up though he fell behind. Then in the 12th, Urango was able to finally drop the stout Ortega and pile it on for the TKO. Rafael Pineda 0-1-0 (0) vs Carlos Maussa 3-1-0 (2) - A tight fast paced bout saw Maussa down in the 3rd, then Maussa had a round so lopsided he earned the 10-8 round on all three cards despite the lack of a knockdown. Pineda took over from there then reopened a 3rd round cut for the TKO in the 8th round. Nicolas Cervera 1-1-0 (0) vs Ricardo Torres 2-1-0 (2) - While tepid early, Cervera and Torres both heated up at the same time, scoring at a rapid pace and going back and forth with Torres taking a slight lead through 6 on all three cards before Cervera dropped him then punished the injured Torres until the fight was halted for the TKO. |

Columbia - Jr. Welterweights - Semi-Finals
Semi-Finals:
Antonio Cervantes 8-1-0 (1) vs Nicolas Cervera 2-1-0 (1) - Cervera started fast, taking four of the first 5 roundsonly to have Cervantes dominate the middle rounds with the lone knockdown in the 7th. From there they went back and forth, trading rounds from the 10th on as Cervantes narrowly took the 143-141, 144-140 and 145-140 decision. I had it 143-141 Cervantes. Juan Urango 3-1-0 (3) vs Rafael Pineda 1-1-0 (1) - Urango worked the body well throughout as they went toe to toe most of the way. He opened a gash on the left eyelid Pineda in the 8th then reopened it in the 11th for the stop on cuts. |

Columbia - Jr. Welterweights - Final
Final:
Antonio Cervantes 9-1-0 (1) vs Juan Urango 4-1-0 (4) - The one time Urango went the distance was a 15th round decision to Cervantes. Urango started fast this time, dropping Cervantes for the lone knockdown in the 3rd round. Cervantes used every inch of the ring from there to weather the storm, then started picking Urango apart during the middle rounds. The last 3rd of the fight was filled with close rounds with little action as Cervantes stayed well outside and Urango couldn't close the distance. This one went the full 15, with Cervantes taking the closer than expected 141-145, 144-141 and 146-140 split decision. Cervantes goes to his second straight World Tournament with a 10-1-0 (1) record. |

Columbia - Lightweights - Fight-Ins
We have 10 warriors in the Lightweight class so there will be two fight-in bouts to set the field at 8.
Fight-Ins: Hugo Barraza 2-1-0 (0) vs Eduardo Molina 0-1-0 (0) - Calling this a war was an understatement. Molina shocked Barraza in the 1st with a crisp hook that put him down, then Barraza took the next two rounds followed by the close 4th and 5th. Barraza dropped Molina in the 6th then went down in the 9th again only to score his second in the 10th. Two more times Molina went down in the 11th, unable to answer the count on the final one in this thrilling battle! Jaime Rangel 3-1-0 (2) vs Roque Cassiani 0-1-0 (0) - After 5 close rounds Rangel dropped Cassiani in the 6th round for the KO. |

Columbia - Lightweights - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Breidis Prescott 1-1-0 (1) vs Jaime Rangel 4-1-0 (3) - Rangel, the previous tourney winner controlled the first two rounds, then they banged heads in an action packed 3rd resulting in a gash on the inside part of the left eyelid of Prescott. The cut reopened in the 4th, ending the bout for a technical draw. Darley Perez 0-0-0 (0) vs Hugo Barraza 3-1-0 (1) - A close thrilling bout saw momentum shift with a 5th round knockdown by Perez. Barraza survived, then came back, taking 3 out of 4 rounds through the 10th only to have Perez drop him in the 11th, 12th and 13th, then twice more in the 14th. Barraza came out and let it all hang out in the 15th round, dropping Perez late in the round for an 8 count before time ran out. The judges had it 143-136, 143-137 and 142-137 for Perez! Walter Estrada 0-0-0 (0) vs Esteban de Jesus Morales 0-1-0 (0) - Morales scored a flash knockwon in the 1st, then dominated the 3rd after a close 2nd before Estrada took over in the 4th, cutting Morales on the bridge of the nose then dominating the rest of the way until the cut reopened in the 8th for the TKO by the favored Estrada. Alfredo Pitalua 0-1-0 (0) vs Moises Pedroza 1-1-0 (1) - Pedroza was cut early in the 1st directly on the right eyebrow and it widened in the 2nd for the TKO on cuts by Pitalua. Rematch: Breidis Prescott 1-1-1 (1) vs Jaime Rangel 4-1-1 (3) - Prescott lived up to his potential finally in this tourney, dropping Rangel in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th rounds before scoring two more in the 8th, the final one for the KO as he won in dominating fashion. |

Columbia - Lightweights - Semi-Finals
Semi-Finals:
Breidis Prescott 2-1-1 (2) vs Alfredo Pitalua 1-1-0 (1) - An all out war that saw Pituala take 2 of the first 3 rounds only to be dropped in the 4th. Pituala was firing back by the end of the round then took the 5th with ease, followed by a high octane pick-em round in the 6th. Prescott took over in the 7th round, then dropped Pitualia again in the 8th and 9th before icing him in the 10th for the KO! Darley Perez 1-0-0 (0) vs Walter Estrada 1-0-0 (1) - a great scrap that saw both men working well inside throughout, which caused an accidental butt in the 4th that opened a gash on the forehead of Perez. They went at it with gusto from there, but the cut wouldn't close and widened to the point that the fight was sent to the cards in the 7th. I had Perez up 58-56, while the judges had it 58-56 Perez, 57-57 and 57-57 for the technical majority draw. Rematch: Darley Perez 1-0-1 (0) vs Walter Estrada 1-0-1 (1) - Perez stormed out fast, taking 3 of the first 4 rounds on my card only to go down in the 5th. Estrada followed iwth a nice 6th, but Perez came back taking the 7th and 8th, then halving the 9th while being cut on the left eyelid from yet another accidental butt. Perez was firing on all cylinders to take the 10th then the cut reopened in the 11th sending it to the cards. I had a narrow 96-94 lead for Perez, while the judges cards read 96-94 (x2) and 95-94 for the winner by an unanimous technical decision, Perez. |

Columbia - Featherweights - Complete
With 5 fighters in this division, I'll post the entire results on one thread. The top two seeds are Victor Polo, 1-1-0 (0) and last years tourney winner Oscar Leon 2-1-0 (2). There will be a fight in bout to set the field at 4.
Fight-In: Felipe Orozco 1-1-0 (1) vs Carlos Rocha 0-1-0 - Orozco scored a 15th round TKO on cuts last time they met. In this one, Orozco dropped Rocha twice and bloodied his forehead in the 5th. The cut continuously reopened, streaming blood into the eyes of Rocha until it became so bad in the 13th that the referee halted it for the TKO on cuts. Semi-Finals: Victor Polo 1-1-0 (0) vs Felipe Orozco 2-1-0 (2) - Polo dropped Orozco in the 5th round as he took a solid lead. After an amazing 8th round by both men that was round of the year quality, Orozco took over in the 9th then dropped Polo twice in the 10th round, then broke his nose before Polo's corner tossed in the towel with 13 seconds left in the round for the TKO. Oscar Leon 2-1-0 (2) vs Antonino Herrera 0-1-0 (0) - Leon was fast and agressive throughout, with Herrera showing bouts of flashiness. Leon lost the 8th round and a point, and the rounds were closer on the judges cards than I expected, but Leon dropped Herrera twice in the 10th round then piled it on before the referee halted it for the TKO. Final: Oscar Leon 3-1-0 (3) vs Felipe Orozco 3-1-0 (3) - Leon holds a 9th round KO over Orozco. This was a good bout with swings back and forth, but knockdowns by Leon in the 3rd and 4th set the tone. They clashed heads in the 5th with Orozco getting the worst of it with a gash on the outside of the right brow that kept reopening until the fight was halted and sent to the cards. I had it 86-84 Leon while the judges had it 85-85, 86-83 and 85-84 for the winner by technical majority decsion, Leon. Leon moves to 4-1-0 (3) heading into his second World Tournament. |

Columbia - Jr. Featherwieghts - Fight-Ins
10 fighters this time means two fight-in bouts. Top seeds are Ricardo Cardona 1-1-0 (0), Jhonatan Romero 0-0-0 (0), Jorge Monsalvo 1-1-0 (1) & last years tourney entrant Daniel Blanco, 3-1-0 (3).
Fight-Ins: Jose Cervantes 0-1-0 (0) vs Elvis Mejia 0-0-0 (0) - Cervantes came out fast, scoring with good shots to the body, but Mejia made him miss the vast majority of them. Later in the round Mejia came to life with a huge flurry of punches to the head that dropped the favored Cervantes like a ton of bricks for the shocking KO upset! Ivan Alvarez 0-1-0 (0) vs Nestor Jiminez 0-0-0 (0) - Alvarez came in the slight favorite, but Jiminez fought the best defensive fight of his career, holding Alvarez to only 15% of over 110 shots per round while landing 36% to take the solid 147-138, 145-141 and 144-141 decision. |

Columbia - Jr. Featherwieghts - Quarter-Finals
Quarter-Finals:
Ricardo Cardona 1-1-0 (0) vs Elvis Mejia 1-0-0 (1) - A lopsided affair that saw Cardona land 51.8% of his shots while only allowing 17.1% by Mejia in his 149-137, 149-137 & 147-139 decision. Jhonatan Romero 0-0-0 (0) vs Nestor Jiminez 1-0-0 (0) - Romero went down in the 1st, then survived 2 more close rounds before scoring a knockdown of his own in the 4th, then again in the 5th for the KO. Jorge Monsalvo 1-1-0 (1) vs Ruben Valdez 1-1-0 (1) - Monsalvo wasted little time, dropping Valdez early then again late for the 1st round KO! Daniel Blanco 3-1-0 (3) vs Ruben Palacios 0-1-0 (0) - Faster and more accurate, and far more powerful, Palacios dropped Blanco twice, the second time in the 11th, then hurt Blanco again in the 12th before his corner tossed in the towel for the TKO! |

Columbia - Jr. Featherwieghts - Semi-Finals
Semi-Finals:
Ricardo Cardona 2-1-0 (0) vs Ruben Palacios 1-1-0 (1) - Both men were accurate, but it was the beautiful jab of Cardona that set the pace throughout as he used the jab to set up an assortment of shots to befuddle Palacios and win the 147-139, 147-138 & 146-141 decision. Jhonatan Romero 1-0-0 (1) vs Jorge Monsalvo 2-1-0 (2) - This was a close slugfest that saw Monsalvo start fast only to have Romero take control with a 6th round knockdown. After a huge 8th, Monsalvo scored his own knockdown early in the 9th then worked Romero over the coals until the fight was stopped for the TKO.

Columbia - Jr. Featherwieghts - Final
Final:
Ricardo Cardona 3-1-0 (0) vs Jorge Monsalvo 3-1-0 (3) - Cardona didn't work at his usual rate, while Monsalvo was by far the more aggressive, working the body well at times. Towards the end it turned into a snoozefest as Cardona danced away from the hard hitter to make this much closer than the skill sets of the two fighters would indicate. It went to the cards with the judges scoring it 146-142, 146-143 and 144-144 for the majority decision by Cardona. Cardona moves into the World Tournament with a 4-1-0 (0) record. |
