When I drafted Zito in my fantasy baseball league, I assumed he'd pitch well. I figured he'd be a little less effective than his Cy Young year, but still a quality fantasy pitcher.

I also assumed the A's offense would be bad. Well, maybe not bad. But I figured Zito would lose out on a handful of losses because of a lack of run support.

Now, I'm starting to shop him around. Not only has he been inconsistent, but his offense has been consistently bad. Not a good combination.

I had a sinking feeling last night when Kotsay threw Iguchi out at the plate.

And when Ginter made that nifty play on Podsednik's grounder up the middle in the 7th with the bases loaded.

And when Willie Harris was put in at shortstop, but that's for a different thread.

To be fair to Harris, those 2 runs would've scored that inning even if he hadn't let the ball roll under his glove. He wasn't throwing out Durazo and the next guy hit a single, too.

They had Dye there today. No that's not a typo Jermaine Dye played SS in the ninth.

That's largely because your pitching staff has plunked 4 batters over the last two games...even if only three of the "counted".

bah another game of no run support. i guess the pitching staff should expect to have to throw shut-outs all the time.

Well, Swisher's on the DL now. Here's the release:

Quote:
The Oakland A's today placed outfielder Nick Swisher on the 15-day disabled list with a right acromio-clavicular (AC) joint sprain. To take his spot on the roster the A's have selected infielder/outfielder Jermaine Clark from Triple-A Sacramento. To clear a spot for Clark on the 40-man roster, the A's have transferred right-handed pitcher Chad Bradford to the 60-day disabled list.

Clark was batting .228 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 24 games with Sacramento. He was leading the River Cats with 18 walks and eight stolen bases and also had a .354 on-base percentage. The 28-year old Clark had appeared in 23 games at second base and just one in the outfield but has spent most of his Major League career in the outfield. Clark made his Major League debut with Detroit in 2001 and is a .154 hitter in 42 games at the Major League level, which also includes stops in Texas and San Diego in 2003 and Cincinnati in 2004.

Swisher was injured in the third inning of yesterday's game against Seattle after running into the wall in right field attempting to catch a Jeremy Reed fly ball. He was batting .218 with eight RBI and a team leading three home runs in 22 games.
So Clark is hitting .228 in AAA and he gets the callup over outfielders Matt Watson (.286) and Sean Garrett (.292)? I guess his OBP is still pretty high, and the versitility is attractive. He'll at least be a nice pinch runner off the bench.

Good thing Kielty is improving, because he'll likely be seeing most of the games in right for awhile now.

Clark was hitting .270 up until 5 days ago and he was the last one cut from camp. Macha also said he can play all 3 outfield positions and some infield so it gives them nice flexibility for late inning moves if you have a guy who can play everywhere. Swish should be back in a couple weeks they say too.

What's wrong with Dan Haren? He got lit up again today. He started out well and just when we were getting comfortable, boom.

At least the A's have managed to score some runs so far, and with Chan Ho Outta the Park still pitching, I think we still have a shot at getting them in a slugfest.

Almost picked up Haren in my roto league this week...glad I scooped Bedard (throwing a 3-hit shutout in the 8th right now) from Baltimore instead. Yikes.

But, like you said, nice to see them put a couple of runs on the board for a change.

Chavez is a typical slow starter. I wouldn't give up on him if I were you, as he always tears it up in the second half.

As for Kendall, I don't know about him since he's new. I'd like to think he can still put up .300+ for us this year since that's what he always does.

I actually drafted him in the initial draft. That Bedard is a stud and I wish I got him when I could. I just was hesitant since I don't trust Baltimore.

Might grab Haren and stick him on the bench with Wood hitting the DL...but, we'll see about that.

D'oh...Jays just scored on Bedard...ARGH!!!!

16-7...are you kidding me???????

EDIT: Actually, they should've put a position player out there on the mound just so they can see how frustrating it is to NOT have any run support!!!!!

The Score-No-Runs A's vs. the Give-Up-Double-Digits Yanks this weekend. Who's going to prevail?

EDIT: I feel so ****ty about the A's that I think the Yankees are going to "get out of their funk" this weekend. At least, that's what sports writers will call it, rather than "the A's continue to suck."

Rumor mill:

Byrnes and low-level prospect to St. Louis for Reggie Sanders.

I wonder if this will really happen. It is being talked about quite a bit. I sort of like it for various reasons, and don't like it for others. I'm not super attached to Byrnes as I think he makes too much money for a part-time player and is overrated.
