The St. Louis Cardinals have learned the closer Jason Motte is expected to miss up to three weeks with a sore elbow which forced him to leave their 7-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs on June 21.
St. Louis led 5-0 going into the ninth inning of that game. Motte faced just one batter allowing an RBI single before leaving because of the injury.
Chicago went on to score seven runs in the inning and won 7-5.
In 26 games this season, Motte has pitched 22.2 innings posting a 1-0 record with 18 saves and a 2.38 ERA.
