Halifax Dazzlers

This team is named after the WWI and WWII practice of painting ships in dazzle camouflage. This helped to protect them by confusing U-Boats on the way from East Coast ports like Halifax to deliver supplies to Britain, and also looks amazing and unlike anything else. It's really worth looking through the pictures on that article, and there's a whole painting section.

Presumably dockworkers and painters at the Halifax docks formed this baseball team in 1917, I gave them an art nouveau type font for the period. The ship I traced is the Olympic (sibling ship to the Titanic), which was painted in dazzle during the war and based in Halifax.

I made a b&w and two color versions

I haven't learned how to make uniforms, mainly because it takes me a hundred years to make my logos, because I really don't know how to do anything, and also because I wouldn't really see them. I spend a lot of time looking around the minor leagues, seeing the logos, but I sim regular seasons and only play out playoff games, so it's not really worth it for me. With that said, obviously the Halifax Dazzlers would have to have the best uniform of any team that I have made up!

Anyone is free to take a shot at it, and if I eventually try to make some, it would have to be the first one

Cape Breton Starfish

Another military team! The local rivals of the Halifax Dazzlers are named after the hot military technology of the 17th and 18th century, the star fort, specifically the Fortress of Louisbourg, site of major battles between the English and French, now a museum/reconstruction.

The team colors are from the Cape Breton flag. Their mascot is most likely called Louis the Starfish. No doubt he shoots his arms into the crowd instead of hot dogs, and then regrows them.

Broadway Follies

I guess this team was established as an outgrowth of the Ziegfeld Follies in the early 20th century. Way too many options but here is the poster I went with. There was a request for a movie league and that is a language that I speak

Jacksonville Villains

Another request for the movie league, it's Laurence Olivier as Richard III. The name Jacksonville Villains is borrowed from the great LBL_Brendan. The team had to be called the Villains, all the guy does is call himself a villain. They could also go in any place that ends in -ville. Or in Leicester

This replaces either the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders or the Hudson Valley Renegades as a Yankees farm team. (surprising amount of red when you look at the Yankees logo)

I tried to include the lyric "there's a world... inside of Yonkers" from Hello Dolly (admittedly, I know about this because of Wall-E), so that is included here, even though it is too small to see.

I also replaced the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs with the Goldfinches, going to have to do something about the Syracuse Mets
This is amazing. Do you have a Yonkers 6th jersey and cap ?

I don't, but I can spend some time tonight at least making an arched away block-text "Yonkers" and I can cut the N out of the navy home jersey logo

* here's another Y, anyway. I couldn't get the away text to look right, and I wanted to try out some stuff for your other idea If you download the files from the Yonkers post, the codes in the file names (which I copied from the codes following the Yankees logos that come with the game) will generate... this uniform and hat:

Richmond Garibaldi Baseball Club/Staten Island Red Shirts

I received a request from Ramzavail, for the Staten Island Redshirts, a team conceived from the fact that Giuseppe Garibaldi lived on Staten Island. This is exactly the kind of prompt I want. I decided to make it a giant multiple era project that is way out of control! So anyway, here is my guide to requests from 20_range:

1. I am eager to do requests
2. No racist imagery
3. No militarism *military history, yes
4. No patriotism *historical movements, yes

5. No dogs. I don't like them

6. It might get weird

7. All logos are created while a one year old child is asleep

Here are some samples from the Garibaldi BC/ Red Shirts/ G's project I intend to present a full 1865-present history for the team (also a tm1681/lbl_brendan/txranger fanart project)

Awesome! I’m glad you liked the idea and I had a feeling you might. I’m renaming my poorly name Staten Island name in the off-season and using these ASAP. Can’t wait

Philadelphia Fire Zouaves

Here is another 19th century team founded by Civil War veterans, or a rebranded historical concept (I'm using it for one of the Phillies' rookie league teams)

I made this hat for the Boston Battalion, and now I have colored it to be a Zouave hat The text is from this membership card . P.F.Z. is my attempt at this belt.

I find the orientalist Zouave uniform concept fascinating, European and American soldiers during the age of Romanticism adopting "exotic"/exciting/(sexy) costumes. This is an age before body armor and camo so the soldiers were protected only by their own belief that they looked great. Several Zouave units were recruited from pre-war firefighters so I will try to make a NY Zouave team as well, to be a rival for Staten Island.

Chicago Zouaves

Am I finally done with Zouaves? here are your Chicago Zouaves

Many teams after the war adopted Zouave-style pants, and there was quite a lot of influence on early baseball. (I have time to do a lot of reading at work)

So the Chicago Zouaves represent Union celebrity Elmer Ellsworth's 1st Zouave "team", I would like to do another NY Zouaves based on the flag of his NY regiment. They would be a firefighting rival for the Staten Island Red Shirts.

*** edit: I added basically a Monty Python version so I must be actually done

Battery Zouaves

And here are your Battery Zouaves, representing the fez-wearing 5th New York. As far as I can tell from the documentation it looks like the officers wore red kepis and the enlisted soldiers wore the red fezes. So I made both (my goal here is learning to trace things myself better)

This is the unit that Winslow Homer was embedded with.

I named them for the Battery in Manhattan because I have recently made so many NY teams, it helps to distinguish them and it sounds metal, of course.

More links I saw: early baseball teams named Zouaves, and dressed as Zouaves.

Ohio Plowshares

When it became clear to me that I was about to read about the Civil War for a week, I decided I should also make a Plowshares team.

"they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. –"

I first encountered this concept, naturally, not from the Bible, but from the Magic card, but I have also seen the sculpture at the United Nations, which would also make for a good (to me) baseball logo. And there's a house with the phrase painted on as a sort of mural near where I used to work in North Philly.

This is the Veteran in a New Field by Winslow Homer as a logo. He is actually holding a scythe of course which gives it a whole other set of metaphors. I grew up reading about the Civil War (this must be obvious by now) and so I often saw his work as illustrations before I knew any art history.

Working with this image for a couple of days, it only got sadder and sadder. it really made me appreciate how much artistry there was in painting that figure in that pose. Also the version on the Met's website has brighter colors, but I used the colors from the version on the wikipedia article, because they are sadder

There's a version with the detail of the scan of the painting, and one with the simplified colors I shaped it with. I also tried to make an O out of the simplified background
