Walkers news: Albarran to injured list; Helverson called up from AAA

The St. Louis River Walkers have placed right-handed pitcher Robby Albarran on the injured list after he suffered a torn rotator cuff during the first inning of an 7-6 10-inning win over Springfield on June 30.
Albarran, 24, had gone 5-4 in 15 starts this season, and sported a 3.64 ERA.
Getting the call up from AAA Memphis is right-hander Brock Helverson.
The 29-year-old has made 17 of his 23 appearances this season for Memphis as a reliever.
Overall, Helverson is 1-2 with one save, and owns a 4.19 ERA.

Walkers news: July 1 -- Springfield 7, St. Louis 1

Record: 43-42, 3rd, 5 GB Des Moines and Quad City
Trey Benton's debut with St. Louis was a rough one, as Springfield got to him to four runs over the first two innings and the Railers went on for a 7-1 win at Busch Stadium (1997).
The victory allowed Springfield to salvage the finale of the three-game series.
St. Louis had recently acquired Benton from Ann Arbor to fill a spot in his starting rotation.
It didn't take long for things to go south for Benton, as the second batter in the top of the first, Riley Greene, smacked a solo homer.
An inning later, Wilson Contreras cranked a three-run homer to make it 4-0.
Benton did settle down and pitched into the sixth inning.
During thatr inning, he gave up an RBI single to Wander Samuel Franco to make it 5-0.
Railers starting pitcher Jared Kelley (4-8) allowed one run on five hits over six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.
Dalvin Rosario, Matt Sarullo and David Amadour all recorded two outs apiece to get the game to the ninth.
David Marcano set the Walkers down in order in that inning to end it.

Walkers news: July 2 -- Green Bay 7, St. Louis 1

Record: 43-43, 4th, 6 GB Quad City
Green Bay punished St. Louis starting pitcher Ricky Cisneros for four runs in the bottom of the first inning and rode that to a 7-1 win at War Memorial Stadium.
After Cisneros retired the inning's first batter. the Mallards had four straight hitters reach base.
In that mix, Austin Hendrick had a two-run double.
Pavin Smith followed that with a two-run homer.
Cisneros surrendered an RBI single to former River Walker Ozzie Albies in the fourth to make it 5-1.
Pavin Smith drove in a third run when he drew a bases-loaded walk from reliever Yeison Santos in the sixth.
Mallards starter Alex Duarte (5-3) allowed one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out 10 and didn't issue a walk,
Former Walker Argenis Batista worked a scoreless seventh.
The final two innings were handled by Josh Forgy without a run being scored.

Walkers news: July 3 -- St. Louis 7, Green Bay 4

Record: 44-43, 4th, 6 GB Quad City
Jordan Groshans went 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs to help St. Louis get past Green Bay 7-4 at War Memorial Stadium.
Groshans homer would not come until the seventh inning, and his three-run blast put the River Walkers ahead 7-2.
However, earlier Groshans had put St. Louis ahead 1-0 in the top of the third with an RBI double off Mallards starting pitcher Erikson Lanning.
In the sixth, Lanning surrendered a two-run homer to Edward Olivares, as the Walkers lead reached 3-0.
Green Bay chased St. Louis starter Angel Tiburcio with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.
But the Walkers scored four in the top of the seventh -- Vidal Brujan had an RBI double to go with Groshans' three-run homer -- as they went up 7-2.
The Mallards put up two against the St. Louis bullpen in the bottom of the seventh -- Byron Buxton had an run-scoring fly ball and Blaze Alexander plated another with a single -- but that was the end of the scoring.
Tiburcio (10-5) could not get through six innings, he allowed two runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings, but still earned his 10th win.,
Luiz Gohara completed the sixth inning.
St. Louis needed four relievers -- Jose Alvarado (0.1 IP), Travis Krogman (1.1), Jake Brentz (0.1) and Ernesto Barbosa (1.0) -- to finish the game.
Barbosa earned his 11th save.

With the win, the Mallards took the final two games of their three-game series with the River Walkers.
Albies had reached on a one-out single off St. Louis starting pitcher Kaneo Kawamoto.
Albies stole second, and then scored on Hendricks' single.
Down 2-0, the Walkers had gone up 3-2 thanks to a pair of home runs -- a solo shot from Thairo Estrada and a two-run blast from Jared Thomas -- off Mallards starter Sean Harp.
But Green Bay tied it in the bottom of the inning.
Harp scored the run after he led off with a double off Kawamoto.
Jordan Lawlar scored Harp with a single.
The Mallards added an insurance run in the eighth when Smith homered off Jake Brentz.
Harp (8-5) lasted five innings, during which he allowed three runs on six hits. He struck out eight and walked none.
Travis Hamrick and Josh Forgy both pitched an inning.
Travis Criswell (0.1 IP) and Justin Doughtie combined on the eighth.
Aremondo Cintron worked a scoreless ninth for his 19th save.

Jordan Groshans led off the bottom of the 10th with a double, and scored on an Andrew Benintendi sacrifice fly, as St. Louis rallied for an 8-7 win over Detroit at Busch Stadium (1997).
Extra innings came about because Cris Rosario hit a three-run pinch-hit homers in the bottom of the ninth to tie it at 7-7.

At one point, the River Walkers led 5-0.
Making his first start since a callup from AAA, Brock Halverson was battered for four runs in the first inning as the Wheelers batted around.
Cade Doughty had a two-run single, while Hunter Greene (sac fly) and Mike Vaughan (single) also had RBIs.
Greene collected his second RBI of the game in the third, with a run-scoring double off Helverson which made it 5-0.
Thairo Estrada hit a two-run homer off Wheelers starter Rich Nelson to highlight a three-run third for St. Louis.
But Detroit tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth to go up 7-3.
That scored remained that way until the bottom of the ninth.
Andrew Benintendi made it 7-4 with a run-scoring double off Adrian Arnesen.
Rosario followed by hammering a 3-2 pitch 433 feet over the fence in right-center to set the stage for extra innings.
Helverson gutted his away through five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits.
Luiz Gohara, however, provided a huge lift with three shutout innings in relief.
Zach Evers worked a scoreless ninth.
Ernesto Barbosa (2-2) struck out the side in the top of the 10th, setting himself up for the win.

Carlos Vidal hit a pinch-hit home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break up a scoreless game and help give St. Louis a 2-0 win over Detroit at Busch Stadium (1997).
Edward Olivares had led off the eighth with a single off Wheelers relief pitcher John Goulet.
Goulet retired the next two batters, but Vidal turned around a 2-2 pitch and drove it 442 feet over the wall in right center for the only runs of the game.
St. Louis starter Trey Benton came out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning unscathed and followed that with five scoreless innings.
He recorded the first out of the seventh before exiting, having allowed just two hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out five and walked three.
Yelson Santos got the final two outs of the seventh.
Cory Tiller (1-1) worked a scoreless eighth, and earned the win.
Jose Alvarado earned his second save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Code Doughty homered twice, including a two-run shot in the fifth inning which gave Detroit the lead for good, as the Wheelers downed St. Louis 5-3 at Busch Stadium (1997).
Doughty's first homer came when he took River Walkers starter Ricky Cisneros deep to lead off the second inning and give the Wheelers a 1-0 lead.
A two-run homer from Andrew Benintendi, off Detroit starter Hunter Greene in the bottom of the third, put the Walkers ahead 3-2.
It stayed that way until the fifth when Doughty dinged Cisneros for a second time, driving a 2-2 pitch 386 feet over the wall in left to make it 4-3.
Detroit added an insurance run in the sixth.
Brian Mundell scored the run, after leading off the inning with a single off reliever Travis Krogman.
A walk to William Contreras moved Mundell to second.
He scored when left fielder Andrew Benintendi booted a single hit by Izaac Pacheco.
Greene lasted 4.2 innings as Detroit's starter, allowing three runs on six hits.
Omar Enriquez (3-2) finished the fifth inning, and worked a scoreless sixth.
After that, it was an inning apiece for Matt Rumley, John Goulet and Adrian Arnesen as the Wheelers sealed up the win.
It was the 22nd save of the season for Arnesen.

Jean Segura doubled to score Jordan Groshans with the game's only run with one-out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give St. Louis a 1-0 win over Detroit at Busch Stadium (1997).
The win gave the River Walkers victories in three of their four-games against the Wheelers, as the Midwest Baseball League heads into its All-Star break.
Groshans led off the bottom of the ninth with a single off Detroit reliever Juan Arroyo.
A bunt by Jean Carmona moved Groshans to second.
Segura sent him scampering across the plate with a hard-hit ball to the gap in right-center.
Walkers ace Angel Tiburcio recorded 26 of 27 outs, but didn't receive the win.
That went to Ernesto Barbosa (3-2), who entered after Tiburcio had issued his second walk of the top of the ninth.,
With two runners on, Barbosa got Cade Doughty to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
That put him in line for his second win of the season.
Tiburcio's line for the game, 8.2 innings, no runs and three hits. He struck out 11 and walked two.

Walkers news: July 10 -- Alek Thomas agrees to two-year exetension

The St. Louis River Walkers have announced they have signed outfielder Alek Thomas to a two-year extension.
The 30-year-old Thomas will received $4 million total through the 2030 and 2031 season.
The left-handed hitter is batting .298 going into this season's All-Star break with four homers and 23 RBIs.
Thomas is in his fifth season in St. Louis, he spent two years with the Walkers before going to Dayton for one year, during which he has batted .296 with 28 homers and 200 RBIs, while primarily serving as the team's lead-off hitter.
