The Tigers lost an opportunity to gain ground on the White Sox (4 games back) as the Red Sox steamrolled them to even the series at one each. The top of the Red Sox order was lethal as they gave Detroit pitching a pounding that resulted in 19 Boston hits, as if to say, we are not of the race, yet. A ten and one half game deficit might say otherwise but this remains to be seen.

Who is leading the Majors in K's
Workhorse Pete Alexander of the Phillies leads the league in innings pitched and in K's (by quite a bit).

Who leads in HR's?
Gavvy 'Cactus Gavvy' Cravath who appears to be the power guy over the past few years, at least his stats would support that thinking.

Two for the Price of One
Owners liked to give the fans some real deals back in the day as witnessed by the 7 twin bills this month. This ain't no bobblehead give away as paying customers got to see their favorite team play two times in one day for a single admission. And, no, they did not have to spend 9 hours at the park to see those games.
But, back to the race for the pennant where a wild card is something you announce before you deal the cards, the pressure is on the Tigers to win big in these games with the Yanks and you can see from the month of play that sweeps are not common for Detroit. But, if they are to gain ground on the White Sox the Tigers will have to do well over the next few days.

Aug. 30 Game 1
NYY catcher Luke 'Danny' Boone was batting .159 just 4 days ago but has suddenly caught fire collecting 8 hits over the past 3 games including 4 for 4 with a SB in today's opener. Boardwalk Brown went the distance in spite of walking 6 as NY had the bats booming in the 11-5 romp. Four Tiger errors contributed to their misery as Dauss took the loss unable to gain his 20th win (19-11).

August 30, game 2
Not a good Sunday for the Tigers as the Yanks swept them at home. With the Sox winning two in a row the Detroit team is now 5.5 GB. They will get another shot at the Yanks tomorrow as back to back double headers will close out the month of August.

August 31 Game 1
The first game of the DH was critical for the Tigers having lost a twin bill to these same Yanks the day prior. The pictures tell the story...

Aug. 31 Game 2
The euphoria of Game 1 and the exciting finish gave way to the reality of a different kind of finish for Detroit. Here's the top of the 9th which is really all you need to know.

The Top 25 Pitching Performances to date
Inclusive of both leagues below are the top 25 pitching performances through August. We don't have any no hitters but certainly some heroic efforts working deep into games.

The New York Yankees have the Tigers number as they pummeled them at Navin Field today while the White Sox were rallying to win a close one in Chicago

The pressure is on the Tigers as Joe Benz and Jean Dubuc are slotted as the SP's for the opener of the set.

Near Miracle on Sep 3
What a comeback only to lose in extra innings. But, can you really expect to beat the best team in the league when you commit 5 errors, are caught stealing 2/2, and issue 6 walks without striking out any batters?

Sept 4
The top teams went at it again and for the second day in a row the fans got their money's worth, this time in the form of the classic pitchers duel.

Sept 5
A pair of big time winning pitchers went head to head at Navin Field in the finale of the 3 game set with each team winning narrow 1 run games the previous two days.
Harry 'the Giant Killer' Covelski, who had lost 3 of the last 4 games, brought to the mound is excellent 22-8 record. Previous to the short term losing streak Harry had reeled off 6 straight wins and 10 out of 11. For the Sox 20 game winner Jim 'Death Valley' Scott entered the contest with 9 losses while earning 2 saves. The top of the Tiger line up had just enough jump to it to ensure that Detroit would take the series two games to one.

St. Louis Browns
The red hot Brownies (9 of 11) will host the Tigers for 5 games over 3 days. 20 year old Tim McCabe has been dominant as of late for St. Louis.
