April 1901

April was a short month and we got out to a 4-2 start.
1 GB of MIL.
The Phillies wanted to trade Lefty Davis to me for Jim Delahanty and Bill Dahlen.
Although the trade looked good, i declined it.
Davis would have given me some extra outfield pop, no doubt.
But, Dahlen was my infield pop at SS.
I decided to stick with infielding instead of outfield.
But Jim Delahanty would prove useful when i shopped him at the end of the month.

Only taking a team for 5 years does have its advantages.
Since you will not be in charge after a short period of time, you can make trades to win with the team NOW!
Because after 5 years, i will be in charge of someone else.
So who cares what happens to the team after either you win it all or you leave after 5 years?
Plus, if you dont win it all, and the AI improves the team after i leave, and you guys send me back to that same team 5 years later, then win it all after the AI did all the work, THAT DOES COUNT!!

I know J. Delahanty will be a star in this league, but when the Chicago Orphans offered me Jack Chesbro for him, i couldnt pull the trigger fast enough!
Chesbro is a HOF, and you guys know i want PITCHING!
Looking forward to May.

I was out of town this weekend, so I missed this until now. I've got your number two team picked, so if you want it now let me know, or if you want me to wait and switch it up in case they turn out to be better than expected, I've got an alternative.

Good luck with the reboot!

May 1901

I play about five random games a month and i sim the rest...every game i managed, i won and actually dominated.
19-9 for the month is very good.
We lead the AL by 3.5 games over the White Sox.
Ed Delahanty is killing the ball by batting average and home runs with 4.
The pitching staff is doing just fine as Young, Chesbro, Wicker, and Lee are keeping runners off the bases.
We still have room for improvement as Bill Dahlen is struggling early and Dummy Hoy and Harry Felix are nursing some early season injuries.
But, lets see if we can keep it up.

June 1901

The month of June was a little lackluster.
We went 15-10 for the month which is respectable, but couldnt pull away from the Detroit Tigers.
Dummy Hoy came off the DL, but couldnt produce his early numbers.
So i sent him to Pittsburgh for Willie Keeler.
Keeler is a better outfielder and he is much younger and ready to be a star.
The rotation is doing okay, but Jack Chesbro has not given me the pitching im expecting.
No...dont worry...he is not going anywhere.
You dont trade a HOF.
We still a hold a 3 game lead in the American League at the halfway mark.
Lets see if we can hold it and not have to play a division series.
Lots of baseball left.

July 1901

July was a 16-11 month and we still hold the lead in the AL.
The Detroit Tigers are staying with us, making sure that we have to continue to win baseball games!
At the trade deadline, i could have pulled the trigger on some trades.
The Cincinnati Reds would have given Christy Mathewson for either Frank Chance or Bill Dahlen.
I thought about this for a while.
But in the end, i decided to stand pat.
A rotation of Young, Chesbro, Lee AND Mathewson would have been DEADLY!
But then again i realized, when i LEAVE this team after five years, this team will have a pitching rotation that NO ONE will crack for a while.
There are still 31 other teams that have to be won with.
So, i stuck to my guns.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL YOU GUYS!!!

August 1901

August went very average as we went 14-12 for the month.
The Detroit Tigers had a worse month and we now have a 7 game lead in the AL.
The Playoffs are pretty much assured in our first year.
But can we win the American League outright to go straight to the ALCS?
Bob Wicker is ROTM and POTM!
Good for him as he looks like a good pick for the Athletics.
What is really interesting is that my two best pitchers are Watty Lee and Bob Wicker, not Jack Chesbro and Cy Young!
Maybe i should trade those two bums for a couple of prospects.
NOT!!!
Lets see if we can win the league in the last month of 1901.

September 1901

For the month of September, the Philadelphia Athletics went 19-9 to finish on top of the American League.
So, the PP were not even close.
Winning the regular season means we can take a seat, get some rest and watch the Boston Americans play the Detroit Tigers in their best of three Division Series.
Ed Delahanty was the man.
He won the BOTM for September and also the AL Batting Crown.
Choosing my starters for the ALCS will be tricky.
Any one of them can pitch and win.

Since this is now a personal dynasty and a not just a reporting dynasty, i will be skipping over any playoff series that does not include teams that i am managing.

1901 Playoffs Preview

Could i win the world series in just my first year doing this updated dynasty?
Maybe, but first, the Boston Americans might have something to say about that.
They will be very tough.
Nap Lajoie is Boston's best hitter batting .404 against us.
Johnny Kling and Sam Dungan also did some damage.
Its their pitching that i think we can get through.
We were 13-7 against the Americans.
I have decided to go with Bob Wicker and Cy Young to pitch against them.
Wicker was 5-0 and Young had an ERA of 2.47.
Watty Lee and Jack Chesbro will be available if i need them.
My entire lineup hit Boston pitching pretty well this season, and i think they will do so again.
So, on to the American League Championship Series...
(To be continued...)

1901 a.l.c.s

Game 1

Bob Wicker gave up two runs but it was more than enough as we beat the Boston Americans 7-2.
Coughlin and Krueger were the guys today going 2 for 4 each with 1 RBI.
Frank Chance also went 2 for 4 and Bob Wicker helped his own cause as well.
Man...back in the day...pitchers were very good hitters.
Its a lost art in the American League today.
I have to admit...
Every time Nap Lajoie steps up to the plate i expect him to get a hit.
He is a machine and will be for a long time.
I have some goofball pitcher by the name of Cyrus Young pitching tomorrow.
Hope this bum does well.
PHA leads series 1-0

Game 2

This game had me going.
Boston scored 2 runs in the 2nd and it already looked liked to me that Cy Young didnt have his best stuff.
Down 3-0 in the 3rd we came back with 2 of our own.
Then tied it up in the 5th.
But then Young gives up 3 base hits in a row which allows a 3 run inning for the Americans.
Socks Seybold and Will Conroy really hit us well today.
But then we tie it up with 2 runs in the 6th and 1 in the 7th.
I guess it must be against baseball religion to replace Cy Young with a relief pitcher.
But I did and as usual i paid for it.
Roger Denzer gave up a run and Harry Felix gave up a run.
Down 8-6 in the bottom of the 9th, i thought we were going to Boston all tied up.
But then Chance and Keeler got on base with two singles.
Ed Delahanty picked up his stick and looked back at me before he went up to the plate.
He said, "Don't worry, Boss...I GOT THIS!!!"
CRACK!!!!
BALLGAME!!!
PHA leads series 2-0

Game 3

This game was quiet.
Joe McGinnity and Bob Wicker pitched well...but in the end...the Boston Americans took the win 2-0.
This was also Wicker's 1st loss against Boston all season.
It was the bottom of the Americans lineup that won the game for them.
Now...i hope Cy Young has recovered from the last game and he better pitch well tomorrow.
I really dont feel like going back to Philadelphia for a game 5.
PHA leads series 2-1

Game 4

These are the kind of games that give me indigestion.
Again Cy Young didnt have good stuff as he gave up 3 quick runs to the Americans in the 1st.
But then the rain started to fall...and the rain ended Boston's season.
A couple of bad errors by the Americans and Jerry Nops being exhausted allowed my batters to start killing the ball.
Boston put in Charlie Case for relief, but it made matters worse for them.
We scored 1 in the 4th and 4 in the 5th.
Young was pooped, so i put in Jack Chesbro.
He pitched 2 scoreless innings until he gave up 2 in the 7th.
Then I put in Frank Morrissey to close the game.
It got a little interesting in the 9th inning as the Americans tried to spoil my day.
But...WE came out on top!
PHA wins series 3-1

1901 WS Preview:

My first year in this dynasty and i make to the world series.
The Brooklyn Superbas will be my opponent.
They finished 3rd in the National League and had to get through the Reds and the Cardinals to get here.
On paper, the Athletics should sweep this team right out of the series.
I am better all across the board.
The Superbas do have a great pitcher in Deacon Phillipe, but besides Dan McGann, there is no one in the Brooklyn lineup that is a real threat.
Im gonna go with Cy Young, Bob Wicker and Jack Chesbro as my three starters for this series.
Young has got to pitch better sooner or later, and Wicker and Chesbro are the men i want on the mound.
If Young has a bad game though, it will be Watty Lee who will pitch game 4.
I figure we sweep this series in 4...but you still have to play the games.
(To be Continued...)

1901 World Series

Game 1

Cy Young just doesnt have it and it cost me the first game of this series.
He couldnt get batters out and although i jumped out to a 3-1 lead, he just kept on giving up base hits.
He's done for this series.
Jack Chesbro pitched well in relief giving up two runs, but Brooklyn's Deacon Phillipe kept us mostly in check.
Ed Delahanty hit a HR in this game, but the 3 runs in the 1st was all we would get.
The Superbas got 16 hits and beat us 7-3.
Now i have to regroup for Game 2.
BRK leads series 1-0

Game 2

This game went back and forth in the early innings until the 5th.
The my hitters went off on Brooklyn's Kid Nichols as we tied up the series with a 12-5 win at Columbia Park.
9 total errors were made in this game!
Whats the matter?
Was fielding in baseball in the early 1900s still a work in progress?
I dont get it.
Anyway...Frank Chance, Ed Delahanty, and Otto Krueger, who came in for Bill Dahlen when he got injured, had marvelous games.
Bob Wicker gave up 3 EARNED runs, and i saw him yell to his fielders during a few of those errors.
Trust me, what he said, i cant repeat. LOL
Series tied 1-1

Game 3

We come away with a 5-4 win at Washington Park to take the lead in the series.
Jack Chesbro pitched okay, but my lineup did the damage against Ted Lewis.
It got close in the 9th, and everytime i go to my bullpen, i get nervous.
But this time, Frank Morrissey closed the deal and picked up the save.
Danny Murphy was the star of this one as he belted one out for his 8th HR of the playoffs.
He's one back of Delahanty who continues to do his job in the postseason.
We reclaimed the home field, now...lets claim game 4.
PHA leads series 2-1

Game 4

Watty Lee got his chance in place of Cy Young.
He gave up 2 quick runs, but then he settled down and pitched a great game to give us a 5-3 win over the Superbas to stand 1 game away from winning it all.
He even got out of a bases loaded jam in the 6th.
Ed Delahanty was the main man, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI.
But tonight really belonged to Lee.
He looked nervous to take the mound for the first time in this postseason.
But he did not disappoint.
What was even better, is that we beat Deacon Phillipe.
I think we have a great chance to close this series out in game 5.
PHA leads series 3-1

Game 5

Nope...not yet,,and this was game for the early ages.
Bob Wicker pitched well with an early 2-0 lead, but then he gave up 4 runs in the 6th.
I brought in Watty Lee to see if had some stuff and he did.
Then, we tied it up in the bottom of the 9th inning.
In the 11th, both teams scored a run.
We had bases loaded in the bottom of the inning with Ed Delahanty up at the plate.
But he flied out and on to the 12th we went.
Then the wheels came off.
I brought in Snake Wiltse who had a pretty decent year and all he did was give up 3 runs on 3 hits on 12 pitches.
Frank Morrissey was sent in, and he gave up another run.
Then Brooklyn's Mike O'Neil closed the game out for a 9-5 win for the Superbas.
So we go back to Washington Park for game 6.
Why do i have a sense of dread for the rest of this series?
PHA leads series 3-2

Game 6

Kinda of figured this was going to happen.
Brooklyn's Ted Lewis was unhittable, while the Superbas just crushed my pitching en route to an 11-0 win.
Nothing my team did was any good and now we have a game 7.
Not much to report here.
We just got crushed...thats it!
Series tied 3-3
