mclowman will probably be pleased to hear that after struggling to a 74-88 finish in 2015 and barely keeping my GM job (hey, I said I finished third, I didn't say it was a close third!), I showed Tommy Tanous (scouting director) the same door I'd previously shown Terry Collins and Dave Hudgens and hired the higher-rated available (albeit expensive) Theo Epstein to take over player development. Theo, it turns out, didn't like a lot Tanous's "five-star" prospects, and his scout grades for them were considerably less.

So now that I'm at the annually-annoying task of "release 30 guys to make room for this year's draftees" I find myself with no good reason to keep some guys we paid $$$ to last year, with Theo telling me they're no damn good and their stats not really disagreeing. Helland and Autrey got released, and Selman just scraped through. What a waste. (Hutson and Alleman did have good years in rookie ball, thankfully.)

(Just so you know, that 74-88 was 40-55 under Collins [despite outscoring our opponents! Nice Pythagorean performance, Terry!] and then 34-33 under Wally Backman, whom I promoted from Las Vegas to take over. At which point the ingrate refused to negotiate an extension and took the vacancy in Minnesota. So I hired Gardenhire, essentially completing a trade of managers who had been double-play partners back in '82 and '84. Weird.)

So to be honest, Helland may not have been the finest ever second round pick He's so obscure I couldn't find any mug shots to use. Here are faces for the rest of the guys, they're of varying quality. Allemand and Autrey are good, Huston and Selman just ok.

Curse you, Tommy Tanous! At least I'm not the only one getting boned by my scouts; the Pittsburgh AI used their 2014 2nd rounder on 3B J.J. Matijevic, who made a baaaad decision by not signing and going to Alabama instead. One mediocre (.706 OPS) season in the SEC later, he fell to me in the 31st round of the 2015 draft, played poorly, and got released. So the scouts are lying to everyone, thankfully.

And to be fair to Tommy, he did make some nice evaluations on 2014 draftees. Here are a few that could use faces:

C Matt Morgan (4th round)—kind of plodding, but advancing. Will be at Brooklyn this year.

3B Aldo Koutsoyanopulos (5th)—.306/.383/.503 at Kingsport last year, so not just a fun name to say.

LF Gerard Hernandez (6th)—couldn't get PT at Port St. Lucie in '14, but a .953 OPS in '15 means he's moving on up.

C Zach Taylor (12th)—may have to play some IF for Brooklyn this year (Morgan has an 84-rated arm, after all), but after posting a .354/.409/.612 slashline at Kingsport in 2015, he's gonna play.

And, the steal of the draft,

3B Xander Wiel (31st!)—zoomed all the way to a cup of coffee at Savannah by the end of 2014, and had been solid there for the past year plus. (Having trouble hitting when I bump him up to the FSL, it's true, but I still have hopes.)

Also, P Nick Eggemeyer (30th) never impressed me, much, but Kansas City liked him enough to ask for him in a trade that helped me clear some useful budget space, so that's good enough for me.

And thanks for your work on the "2015" class.

(He plays for Oaks Christian in Westlake Village [CA], which is a baseball factory, but I guess Tommy focused more on his freshman and soph performances than the disappointing .276 he hit as a junior. C Kantaro Iitsuka—International FA signee is the only Las Vegas 51 without a facegen.

SP Colin Rodgers—Part of the haul in that Eggemeyer trade I mentioned; in the rotation at Binghamton.

MR Jeff Walters —No idea why he isn't in the all-in-one mod after recording 38 saves for Binghamton in 2013; still can't stick at AAA and no longer closes for the B-Mets but hanging around

CF Chris Lofton—So at the end of 2015 spring training, Matt den Dekker has won the starting CF job and Kirk Nieuwenhuis is surplus goods. Time to shed Kirk's salary and swap some long-in-the-tooth minor leaguers for younger talent, right? Naturally, Nieuwenhuis puts up a .775 OPS in 201 ABs as a fourth OF in SF, while den Dekker's rocking .156/.258/.202 performance sees him spending most of the summer in Las Vegas and making the subsequent Kevin-Plawecki-for-Christian-Yelich trade something of a necessity. Sigh. Lofton is hitting .341 at Binghamton, though, so that's good.

RF Victor Cruzado—Cruzing up the chain, posting OPS numbers over .900 at three different stops and currently in RF for Binghamton.

RF Vicente "Hungry Like The" Lupo—not as good as his running mate, Cruzado, but seems useful, so far.

And here I was being all nice and patient.

How about we check in across town, with the (crumbling) Evil Empire? Brian Cashman got cashiered after back-to-back 4th place seasons (71-91 in 2014 and 70-92 in 2015), and they're still in 4th, albeit at 30-33, which is an improvement. Nobody technically faceless on the big team, although leading hitter Mason Williams could use a redo, since he doesn't actually have that weird discoloration on his cheek.

But 4/5ths of the Scranton-WB starting rotation is anonymous…which, considering that three of these guys have ERAs above 6.00 might be just how they like it. Still, why don't we put a face with the disgrace? May we have…

It's been two deathly poor seasons for the Arizona Diamondbacks, with consecutive 61-101 marks, worst in baseball, both seasons. So it's no wonder that the stopgap outfielders they brought in (Andrew Lambo, Colby Rasmus, Nick Swisher) have blown away like so much tumbleweed, and the outer fringes of Corrupt Bank Field are now being patrolled by the likes of Socrates Brito, Chuck "Nice Sneakers" Taylor, and these three facegen-less wonders:

(Parra's bat has been very mediocre in Seattle, but the M's are winning, so I guess his glove helps.)

(Yep, he's a Nationals prospect IRL. What happened in the game was that Patrick Corbin missed all of 2014 with that torn ligament in his elbow, then suffered a 5-month rehab setback during the off-season, and then another setback while on rehab at Reno in May 2015, and the Snakes gave up and sold low, not sure if he'd be able to come back, whereas the Nats could take the chance. Corbin's done nicely as a setup guy in D.C. [nice WHIP numbers], but he doesn't have the stamina to start any more, so if Ward develops this could work out well for Arizona.)
