Veterans Stadium,Philadelphia,Pa.-The Phils and Cardinals went at it today in a holiday weeked doubleheader that saw each team win a game thanks to tremendous performances by their respective starting pitchers,In game one,the Cardinals Rick Wise dominated his former team on his way to a complete game 8 hit 3-0 shutout victory in which he struck out 2 and walked 2.The game's only offense came courtesy of a Lou Brock RBI single in the third and a 2 run 9th inning single by catcher Jerry McNertney. In game two,the Phillies Jim Lonborg finally snapped his personal 7 game losing streak with a gritty complete game 4-2 victory in which he fanned 4 Cardinal batters. At the plate, rookie catcher Bob Boone provided the stake to the heart with a majestic 3 run home run in the bottom of the 2nd inning off of Cards starter Reggie Cleveland who's record falls to 7-6.

Steve Carlton is hitting better than Tim McCarver! How cool is that?

Veterans Stadium,Phila.Pa.-Down 3-2 entering the bottom of the 9th,the Phillies once again snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as they roughed up Cardinals reliever Joe Grzenda, tagging him for for 3 hits,a walk and 2 runs in just one third of an inning as the Phillies improved to 7-3 against the Cardinals with today's 4-3 victory.

Veterans Stadium,Phila,Pa.-Following yesterday's debacle in which they left 13 men on base, the Phillies bounced back today thanks to home runs by Greg Luzinski and Willie Montanez that powered them past the Giants 6-4.On the mound, the Phillies had to go with a bullpen start due to the extreme fatigue of their starters and somehow it worked with Bob Terlicki earning the win and Dick Selma the save.

Phillies Bolster Staff With Acquisition Of Reuss

Veterans Stadium,Phila,Pa.-Stretched thin due to the injury of Wayne Twitchell, the Phillies went out today and acquired 23 year old southpaw twirler Jerry Reuss from the Houston Astros in exchange for backup 2B Denny Doyle and $50,000.At today's press conference to announce the trade,Phils GM Paul Owens described Reuss as a player who "fits perfectly with what we're trying to do here,he's a great kid with a lot of potential who could be a mainstay in the middle of this rotation for years"

I'd say that was an astute evaluation. Good pickup!

Veterans Stadium,Phila,Pa.-Thanks to home runs from Tito Fuentes and Bobby Bonds, the Giants took the third and final game of this series 5-3 with starting pitcher Sam McDowell earning his 7th victory of the season on the strength of a 7 inning 5 hits 3 run ballgame, reliever John Morris pitched the final two innings allowing just 1 hit for his third save of the season. For the Phillies, starting pitcher Jim Lonborg despite pitching well for most of the game was once again done in by the longball which has pretty much been his bugaboo all season long.

Veterans Stadium,Philadelphia,Pa.-With the taste of defeat fresh on their tongues, the San Diego Padres came into today's game and absolutely annihilated the Philadelphia Phillies 10-2.Rookie starter Dave Downs who up to this point has pitched surprisingly well, was torched for 8 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks in just 3 innings of work that all but sealed the Phillies fate.Inflicting most of the damage was Padres catcher Dave Duncan who went 3 for 5 with a double,a home run,3 RBI and 2 runs scored for the victors.

Veterans Stadium,Phila,Pa.-In the third and final game of this series, new Phillies pitcher Jerry Reuss finally got his first start and what a start is was, going the distance while allowing just 5 hits and 2 earned runs in the Phils 4-2 victory over San Diego.Following a first inning in which he allowed a monster 2 run blast to Dave Duncan,Reuss settled in nicely allowing just 4 singles the rest of the way as his team battled back to eventually take the lead for good in the 7th thanks to a Tim McCarver sac fly followed by a Clay Kirby wild pitch that allowed Larry Bowa to score the final run of the game from third.
