Tae-Shik Kim Wins IBF Title in Bazaar Ending

As Tae-Shik Kim (21-0-0-11) and Guty Espadas (19-1-1-12) entered the ring for their vacant IBF Flyweight title match the crowd was still buzzing from the co-feature Ignacio Espinal's ninth round stoppage of Leo Gamez for the vacant WBA Championship. It seemed we were gonna be treated to another all out brawl as both men were in top shape for this battle. As the bell started to round one Espadas came right across the ring and rang Kim's bell. Espadas was having his way when inexplicably he threw an intentional head butt that was deemed flagrant by referee Perez Huerta and was disqualified. The pro Mexican crowd was livid. Referee Huerta had to be escorted from the ring for his own safety as did Kim. Speaking thru a translator Kim said " I'll give him a rematch but this time it will be in South Korea". Espada wasted a golden opportunity and should be required to win another fight against a top challenger before betting another shot.

The co-feature mentioned in the previous paragraph was a battle between Ignacio Espinal (27-0-1-19) and Leo Gamez (21-1-0-17) for the vacant WBA Flyweight Championship. The pre-prime Gamez was gonna have his hands full against the 9-2 favorite Espinal. The fireworks started quickly in this one as both men were scoring with bombs in the first. In the second an Espinal combo dropped Gamez for an eight count. Espinal tried closing the show but Gamez showed great defense and recuperative power. In the third Gamez was getting to Espinal with pounding lefts and rights and Espinal's left eye showed the effects of it as the eye was swelling as the round came to a close. The fourth and fifth rounds were evenly fought with a slight edge to Espinal. Espinal had a big sixth round as he was just teeing off on Gamez whose right eye began swelling. Gamez landed a right hook that caused him to wince in pain after the shot landed. Both men seemed gassed as the bout entered the eighth round. Espinal's eye was looking worse then Gamez' and was causing him some problems as Gamez landed some of his best punches of the fight. As the ninth round opened Gamez sensed he was behind and came out looking to turn the tide but it was Gamez that was dropped by a wicked hook. Gamez rose at seven but was in bad shape. A few seconds later Gamez was dropped for the third time of the evening this time for a five count.. Gamez rose gamely but was dropped for good with a screaming right cross. Gamez has nothing to be ashamed of he was outgunned but as he still is maturing he will be a force to be reckoned with. Espinal looked great and showed one hell of a chin as he was never hurt.

We then saw some youngsters taking a step up in competition. First Sot Chitalada (8-2-0-3) was upset by Kimio Fusesawa (15-3-0-4) when a bad cut caused the bout to be stopped in the second round. Chitalada was having his way thru the bout until the cut caused the stoppage. Next Juan Herrera (10-0-0-4) looked impressive in stopping Jiro Takada (12-2-0-1) in eight. Herrera scored knockdowns in the third and two in the faithful eighth round. We also watched Francisco Tejedor (2-0-1-0) and Dionisio Bisbal (3-0-0-0) win four round unanimous decisions over TC's

I remember watching Espana fight. He was pretty tall if I remember correctly? Long reach. Good jab. Quartey was a real monster at Jr. Welterweight, though. And Meldrick Taylor's career was like a blazing meteor! I always thought he would have beat his friend, Pernell Whitaker if they had met in their primes. At his best, his hands were so fast he could hit anyone! Of course, he was there to be hit too, and therein lay the problem.

Taylor was great but was never the same after the Chavez loss. I was at his title defence over I believe it ws Luis Garcia and I don't care what the judges say Taylor did not win that fight.

Taylor went from Prime to Pre-Prime after Chavez! And then, to END a short time later. Poor guy was punch-drunk in record time. Similar to Andrew Maynard. Some fighters go down so quickly in every way - you hate to see it.

Definately the degree to which some people decline is really a horrible thing.

Castro's go 1 for 2 in Title Bids

In the main event that was going off at even odds Armando Castro (25-0-2-20) and Edgar Omar Monserrat(23-1-1-10) both appeared to not be in peak physical condition. Monserrat entered the bout coming off an eighth round knockout win over Willie Jensen, while Castro won an eight round unanimous decision over Kongtoranee Payakaroon. Monserrat won the first round as he was the quicker of the two and used a crisp jab to keep Castro at bay. Castro was able to get closer to Monserrat in the second and landed some heavy hooks to the body and head. Monserrat was back in control in the third using his jab once again to keep Castro off of him. Castro won the fourth again with heavy handed combos. Monserrat seemed to be pulling away after the fourth as he easily won the fifth and sixth rounds with sharp combos and even some power shots of his own, Castro was winning a big round in the seventh when he was deducted a point for low blows. So after seven I had it 4-2-1 in favor of Monserrat. As the eighth round began Monserrat was looking a little worn down and Castro took full advantage as he charged out of the corner and landed a picture perfect one, two combo that dropped Monserrat for a count of six. Monserrat was dropped quickly a second time by a blistering uppercut Monserrat rose at the count of nine and looked to be in bad shape and with over a minute to go in the round he had his work cut out for him. Castro remained calm and stalked his opponent and another perfectly timed uppercut dropped Monserrat for the third time in the round and Referee Tony Perez did not even bother to count and waved the fight over. Great win for Castro who was behind on all three score cards at the time of the stoppage.

In- The Co-Feature we had #1 ranked WBC contender Alberto Castro (25-0-2-16) facing #2 ranked WBC contender Jesus Rojas (14-0-2-4) in a twelve round bout for the vacant WBC Championship. This bout was extremely competitive and hard to score. Both men fought at a torrid pace thru four rounds and landed some incredible power punches. As the fifth round came to a close Alberto Castro had swelling under both of his eyes. Joe Souza did an incredible job keeping Castro in this fight. After six I had the fight scored 4-1-1 in favor of Rojas. At this point Castro seemed to be the fresher of the two and slowly climbed his way back into the fight winning rounds seven and eight with some great work on the inside and even opened a cut above the right eye of Rojas. Rojas battled back in the ninth and landed some great combos. Both men showed sturdy chins in this one. Castro roared back in rounds ten and eleven and clearly won these rounds as he again was able to punish Rojas on the inside. Going into the last round the fight was up in the air on my card as I had it scored 5-5-1. Rojas got on his bicycle in the last round and used a superb jab to keep Castro away and earn the nod on my card. Scores were 116-113 Castro, 115-114 Rojas and 115-115 a draw. I really can't complain with the decision it was a very close and competitive fight. I'm looking forward to these two meeting again to settle this one.

In the support bout we had two undefeated pre-prime boxers who were stepping up their competition level facing off against each other. Cobra Ari Blanca (13-1-3-2) and Kenji Matsumura (12-0-1-3) entered the ring in great shape. Blanca came out trying to land the big punches and Matsumura easily made him miss and with the first punch Matsumura landed, a picture perfect counter right hook put Blanca to sleep at 1:30 of the first round. Very impressive showing for Matsumura who coming into the bout was not known as a huge banger so it makes you wonder about Blanca's chin.

The opening bout featured Jose Quirino (3-0-0-0) who won a easy four round unanimous decision over TC Javiar Diaz (0-6-0-0). Nothing special about the performance very workman like.

Zarate KO's Olivares in Eight

Going into Saturday nights IBF Bantamweight Championship neither Carlos Zarate (23-0-0-23) and Ruben Olivares (21-1-0-21) had never seen the ninth round of about. Zarate came into the bout with a fifth round TKO over Takao Sakurai while Olivares stopped Juan Francisco Rodriguez in seven. When Zarate took off his robe he seemed a little soft around the middle. Olivares looked to be in great shape. When the bell rang to start the fight the fireworks started. Zarate was first to test Olivares' chin with a vicious straight right that landed right on the button. Olivares fired right back with a sizzling hook. As the first round closed Olivares was showing swelling under his right eye. As the second round opened Olivares seemed more determined and 1:00 into the round an Olivares uppercut dropped Zarate for a five count. Zarate seemed to be on shaky legs and a few seconds later Olivares dropped Zarate for a second time this time with a hook for a seven count. Olivares tried to finish Zarate off but Zarate was able to cover up and survive the round. As the third round began Zarate seemed to be carrying his hands low but was able to outland Olivares in some wicked exchanges. The fourth round had Zarate in complete command and again landing some brutal power shots that now swelled up Olivares' left eye. In the fifth Zarate was finally able to hurt Olivares and it was a vicious uppercut that dropped Olivares for a three count. Zarate jumped on Olivares and again Olivares visited the canvas after a solid cross dropped him for a four count. As the round came to a close Olivares looked worse for wear. The sixth and seventh rounds saw both men again trading brutal power shots with Zarate getting the better of it. As the eighth round opened Olivares' eyes were almost swollen shut which is why he didn't see a Zarate hook that dropped him for a nine count. Olivares rose but looked to be in bad shape. A few seconds later a wicked Zarate uppercut dropped Olivares for good and he was counted out at 2:14. I'm sure Olivares will bounce back from this defeat. The Bantamweight division seems to be a solid division and Zarate will have his hands full trying to hold onto the title.

The co-feature for the vacant WBA Bantamweight Championship had hard hitting Roberto Rubaldino (27-1-0-25) squaring off against American Johnny Carter (26-0-0-11). Going into the bout Carter was a slight 3-2 favorite. Carter came into the bout with a seventh round TechUD over Rudolfo Martinez while Rubaldino had stopped Satoshi Shingaki in five back in February. Carter quickly established his speed in the first as he was landing sharp jabs and counter rights. The second round was evenly fought as Rubaldino was able to get inside and do some great body work and Carter continued to pump the jab. Rubaldino won the third as he landed his first big punch of the fight a solid hook that caught Carter flush. Carter was back in control in the fourth and fifth as again he just seemed to quick for the stlking Rubaldino. Rubaldino won the sixth as he was just busier then Carter who seemed to take the round off. In the seventh Rubaldino was finally able to hurt the fleet footed Carter when a staright right hand dazed Carter. Carter got on his bicycle and was dancing away when a Rubaldino hook strayed south of the border and cost him a point. So a round that was much needed was now going to be scored even. Rubaldino won the eighth as he seemed the fresher of the two and just outworked Carter. In the ninth Rubaldino was coming straight ahead when he walked into a sizzling right cross and just slumped to the canvas and was counted out at 1:37. Impressive one punch kayo for Carter. I don't think anyone expected that, a decision maybe.

We then got to see Joltin Jeff Chandler (22-1-0-10) take on Cardenio Ulloa (22-2-0-18) in a ten round match. Chandler controlled the power punching Ulloa thru out using a great jab and wicked counters. Chandler was able to hurt Ulloa in the seventh but never really had him on the verge of going. We then witnessed young Venezuelan Israel Contreras (8-0-0-5) knock Kosei Anan (10-3-0-5) cold in the sixth round. Al Cabillian (0-0-3-0) remained winless as he fought to his third draw in as many fights. Australian Lionel Rose (3-0-0-0) easily outboxed Rio Blenkinship (0-3-0-0) to earn a four round unanimous decision by scores of 39-37 and 40-36 twice.

Garza and Fenech Victorious In Title Bids

Los Angeles' Jaime Garza (23-0-0-21) and Australia's Jeff Fenech (18-0-0-16) showed emphatically why they are two of the best Jr Featherweights in the world Saturday night as both men captured Jr Featherweight titles. Garza stopped Fabrice Benichou (21-1-0-12) in the twelfth round with one screaming right hook, while Fenech took half the time knocking Victor Callejas (18-1-0-17) cold in six rounds. Garza a 2-1 favorite coming into his bout with Benichou had his hands full early as Benichou clearly won the first three rounds using a slick jab and wicked counters. Benichou landed some really clean punches on the jaw of Garza. Had Benichou had a little more power he may have made this fight a little more interesting. In the fourth Garza took over as he was finally able to get to the slick boxing Benichou. Benichou himself showed a great chin as he took some hellacious shots flush on the chin. Benichou's chin finally succombed for the first time in the eighth round as a Garza uppercut deposited him on the seat of his pants for a three count. Both men looked worse for wear as the eighth round concluded. Garza had a cut above the left eye and Benichou's left eye was almost swollen shut. Over the next three rounds Garza continued to land some wicked blows but Benichou continued to fight on and even landed some bombs himself. The twelfth round started as the previous nine had Garza coming right at Benichou and Benichou looking to fight from the outside and :43 into the frame Garza launched a right hook that caught Benichou right on the button that dropped him for a full ten count. Benichou showed great heart and a hell of a chin. I'm sure we'll be seeing him again. Garza never let up even after being outclassed thru the first three rounds and stuck to his game plan. As much as he got hit when he's in there with someone who can bang should make for some really great fights.

Fenech also had his hands full with the heavy hitting Callajas. Every punch Callejas threw was meant to end the fight. Fenech showed a great chin as he took the punches and kept right on coming. After four rounds I had Callejas up 2-1-1. In the fifth Fenech came out and stood on the outside and had his best round of the fight landing a stiff jab and wicked right hands. The faithful sixth round saw Fenech unload on Callejas with some heavy handed hooks, crosses and uppercuts. Fenech was landing everything he threw and late in the round a Fenech cross connected that saw Callejas go unconscious before he hit the canvas. Why they bothered to count is beyond me. Callejas was motionless for a good two minutes. Once revived he was brought to his stool where the ringside physician did some prelimianry testing before having Callejas sent to a local hospital for a more detailed examination. Both men showed great power but Fenech showed the better chin. Fenech who still has yet to hit his prime may be poised for a long reign at Jr Featherweight before he sets his sights on the Featherweight division.

We also saw the Dominican Republics's Leo Cruz (19-3-0-2) and South Korea's Seung-Hoon Lee (19-2-0-11) square off in a ten round bout. Lee was looking to rebound from an eight round unanimous decision loss to Jeff Fenech, while Cruz was coming off a fourth round TKO victory over Shigeru Sasaki. Cruz was outclassed from the beginning and this quickly turned into a mismatch as Lee just tee'd off on the hapless Cruz and a Lee cross dropped Cruz for a ten count at the end of the fourth round. The next bout may have been the best match of the night as Derrick Holmes (12-4-0-4) won an eight round unanimous decision over Seung-II Suh (12-3-0-1). Thru four rounds the fight was even as both men alternated rounds one and two and then alternated knockdowns Suh scoring one in the third, Holmes scoring one in the fourth. Suh would visit the canvas again in the sixth as a Holmes combo dropped him for an eight count. Suh battled back nicely in the sixth and even opened a nasty gash above the right eye of Holmes. Holmes won an sexciting seventh round as both men again just gave all they had and exchanged some clean power shots. Suh won the eighth as he outworked Holmes who seemed a bit more tired then Suh. I had Holmes up by a point as did one of the judges. Scores were 76-74, 77-73 and 76-75. We then got a glimpse of up and comer Royal Kobayashi (8-0-0-7) do what he's been doing and knock out Kanzaburo Nakamura in the second round with a killer overhand right hand. Lastly Jai-Won Choi (2-1-0-1) continued to improve his record with a four round majority decision over Kazuhiro Hayashi. Scores 40-36, 38-38 and 39-37.

Jaime Garza was on the verge of being a star when he got stopped by Juan Kid Meza. I remember that day well, because Edwin Rosario was stopped by Jose Luis Ramirez over the same weekend.

Jeff Fenech is a great fighter to have in a universe because he can fight well at so many different weight classes.

I remember the Garza Meza fight well myself because I was so surprised that Meza blasted Garza out of there so quickly

Poor Jaime would be a long-shot to beat Fenech.

I agree Callejas had a good HP and it didn't effect Fenech in the slightest.

LaPorte Captures WBC Title in Slugfest!

Juan LaPorte (20-0-0-19) and Antonio Esparragoza (26-1-0-23) met in a wild shootout for the vacant WBC Featherweight Championship. From the opening round both men just tee off on eachother landing very clean and powerful shots. The first round was even on all three scorecards. LaPorte won the second as he was sharper with his power shots. LaPorte was winning the third round comfortably when he made a mistake and walked into a picture perfect right hook that dropped him for the first time in his career. He was up at 3 and Esparragoza tried closing the show and landed some incredible combos that LaPorte held upto nicely. Esparragoza picked up where he left off and hurt LaPorte badly with a vicious uppercut. LaPorte showed a decent defense and managed to stay out of harms way. In the fifth LaPorte came storming back and a well placed one,two combo buckled Esparragoza's knees badly. Esparragoza was forced to cover up to survive the round. The sixth was evenly fought with both men again took turns landing some wicked power shots. LaPorte had a huge seventh round pasting Esparragoza with vicious rights and lefts. As the round came to a close Esparragoza's left eye was starting to swell. Both men started the eighth looking a little spent. Midway thru the round Esparragoza had a point deducted for a low blow. This must have angered LaPorte because a few seconds later a screaming uppercut dropped Esparragoza for the first time in the fight for a count of eight. Esparragoza was hurt badly again in the ninth by a straight right hand. The tenth round saw Esparragoza storm out looking to turn the tide but a well placed right hand counter dropped him for a six count. LaPorte wasn't gonna let Esparragoza off the hook and a few seconds later a well placed uppercut dropped Esparragoza for the second time this time for an eight count. Esparragoza again went into a defensive shell but was unable to stand upto the pressure of LaPorte and was dropped for the final time by a brutal right hook. Esparragoza was counted out at 3:00 of the tenth round. LaPorte looked impressive and his first defense looks to be against England's Pat Cowdell (20-0-0-16) who is ranked fourth by the WBC. But with the #1 and #2 contenders Bobby Chacon and Jim McDonnell meeting for the vacant IBF title next month Cowdell is next in line.

In the support bout Antonio Gomez (34-0-0-8) won a fifteen round unanimous decision over France's Daniel Vermandere (22-1-0-2) for the vacant WBA Featherweight Championship. This was a very competative fight as both men used a great jab and sharp counters to outland one another. Thru five rounds I had Gomez up three rounds to two. Vermandere started landing some nice power shots in the seventh and Gomez' left eye began showing the effects of it as the left eye started to swell. This would be Vermandere's final stand. Gomez cruised from the eighth round on even scoring a knockdown of Vermandere in the tenth round for a 2count.Vermandere made the bout a little closer by winning the thirteenth and fourteenth rounds The judges had the fight scored closer then I did. 144-140 twice and 143-141. Gomez' first potential title defense may be against Argentina's Juan Domingo Malvarez (20-0-0-17). Gomez states "I want to defend my title in front of my home country. I don't care who I face". Should make for a decent scrap.

The undercard featured four youngsters in their second pro fights. All four men Carlos Rocha (2-0-0-0), Eloy Rojas (2-0-0-1), Shozo Saijo (2-0-0-0) and Cesar Soto (2-0-0-0) won four round unanimous decisions over TC's. Rocha faced a little adversity as his left eye began to swell in the second round of his match.

Couldn't think of a worse style for Garza. Jeff's chin was concrete all the way up to 130. Getting undressed by Zumah not withstanding. Jamie has stamina issues and loves to rumble.

I'll bet he carries enough pop to stagger Fenech early. But the Aussie pressures him nonstop and stops him 8. Probably gets real ugly by the 5th.

Jr Lightweight Bouts May 86

Chavez & Arguello Victorious

As the sun set and all the preliminary fights concluded all the fans jammed into La Laguna Auditorium were anticipating two highly anticipated showdowns. First Guyana's Azumah Nelson (21-1-0-20) and Nicaragua's Alexis Arguello (22-0-0-20) would square off for the vacant WBC Jr Lightweight Championship and in the main event. Two Mexican sluggers Ben Villaflor (28-1-0-21) and Julio Cesar Chavez (28-0-0-28) would meet for the vacant WBA Jr Lightweight Championship. Both Arguello and Nelson looked like they were in great shape. This fight was going off at even odds. Nelson was coming into the bout with a 6th round KO of Genero Hernandez, while Arguello stopped Jean-Marc Renard in eight. Back in February. Both men came out and started throwing bombs early. Nelson clearly won the first 1:30 of the round as he tested Arguello's chin quickly with a sizzling right hand. Arguello stormed back in the final 1:30 also testing Nelson's chin. Arguello came out in the second again was blasting rights and lefts off the chin of Nelson who just kept coming. Nelson won the third as he waited for Arguello to punch and then landed some very heavy counter shots. After three I had it scored 29-29. and after six I had it 58-58. Both men showed incredible chins as most punches landed were very heavy handed. The eighth seemed to be the turning point in the fight as Nelson appeared to be slowing down and a vicious Arguello hook hurt Nelson badly. Nelson was forced to hang on in the final:45 Arguello picked up in the ninth were he left off in the eighth as a screaming right hand rocked Nelson again. Again Nelson was forced to cover up and stay out of harms way and amazingly he did I was sure Arguello would close the show there. After nine I had the bout scored 88-86. Nelson would battle back in the tenth and even though he was tired he still landed some incredible blows on the jaw of Arguello. Arguello was back in control in the final two rounds. In the last round Arguello was finally able to dent Nelson's chin and score a knockdown with a wicked straight right hand. Nelson rose at six and went into survival mode. I had the fight scored a lot closer then the judges did.. Scores were 118-111, 117-112 and 117-113. Arguello always gracious had these comments. "Nelson is one tough individual, I hit him with some of the hardest punches I've ever thrown and he just kept on coming. He will be a champion someday". I tend to agree with Arguello Nelson fought a brave fight and has nothing to be ashamed of he just stepped into the ring with a very special individual.

As the fans settled in for the main event the crowd was electric. As both men made their way to the ring the crowd exploded into cheer's for both men with Chavez receiving the louder of the ovations. Chavez earned his shot with a blistering first round knockout of Samuel Serrano, while Villaflor stopped Rocky Lockridge in six. Villaflor came storming across the ring as the bell rang and just teed off on Chavez landing some very precise blows. Chavez took control in the second as it was his turn to test Villaflor's chin and test it he did by landing some great and powerful combos. Villaflor started the third round well as he was countering the very aggressive Chavez and in his dodging of a left jab he ducked down to the left, right into a crippling uppercut. Villaflor visited the canvas for the first time in his career, amazingly he was up at six. Chavez pressed the action and landed a few more power shots but was unable to get Villaflor out of there. Chavez continued his slow dismantling of Villaflor as he continued to press forward and rake Villaflor's body with intense power shots. The fifth started with Villaflor trying to stay away from Chavez' right hand and again walked right into a lethal left hook. Villaflor's knee almost touched the canvas but some how he remained upright. Villaflor slumped against the ropes as Chavez continued to land blow after blow. A wicked left hand left Villaflor limp against the ropes with his hands down by his sides as the referee quickly jumped into to save Villaflor from further damage. The crowd erupted as Chavez raised his hands in victory. People instantly began clamoring for an Arguello Chavez match up. I'm sure both men would like a rest and a few title defenses before squaring off.

On the undercard we watched Japan's Apollo Yoshio (19-0-3-5) and Kamel Bou Ali (18-1-2-10) battle to a ten round majority draw. Yoshio was making his first appearance of the year and his first step up in competition. Ali was looking to rebound from an eight round unanimous decision loss to Tracy Patterson. Ali the more experienced of the two made the youngster work. Ali would visit the canvas twice in the bout once in the sixth and once in the final round. Yoshio faced some adversity as his right eye began to swell noticeably in the seventh round. Scores were 95-93 Ali and 94-94 twice. I was inline with the first judge I thought Ali did enough to pull out the victory. We watched two more Japanese Jr Lightweights square off as Katsuji Sano (12-4-2-1) and Ryu Fukida (16-3-1-7) fought a very one sided bout as Fukida gets back in the win column after being stopped in nine by Barry Michael back in March win an eight round unanimous decision. Scores were 78-73 twice and 78-72. Edgar Apatan (13-6-5-1) and Alfredo Layne (7-3-1-5) battled to a six round draw, While Italian Domenico Chilorio (2-0-1-0) won a four round unanimous decision over Gary Rouse. (0-3-1-0).
