1885 End of September: National League and American Association
![]() The Beaneaters who started off the season so promising just collapsed in the month of September as they went 7-13 allowing the White Stockings to take over first place. The offense which was scoring at a blistering pace has now gone stagnant and the pitching which was terrific, has been mediocre, at best. Cap Anson is hitting .312, well below his .382 career average, and has been plagued by injuries as well. The Chicago White Stockings took full advantage of Boston's troubles. Pitcher Daisy Davis looks like a Cartwright Award winner as he has 40 wins and only 12 defeats with a 1.74 ERA. Batting Leaders BA: Ross Barnes (BSN) .352 Hits: Ross Barnes (BSN) 158 2B: Fred Dunlap (NYG), Cal McVey (PRO) 32 3B: Lip Pike (CHN), John Reilly (SLM), Yank Robinson (SLM) 8 HR: Sam Thompson (DTN) 6 RBI: Harry Moore (SLM) 78 Runs: Ross Barnes (BSN) 86 SB: Piggy Ward (PHI) 43 Pitching Leaders ERA: Hardie Henderson (SLM) 1.47 Wins: Daisy Davis (CHN) 40 Losses: Larry McKeon (BUF) 33 SHO: Daisy Davis (CHN), Peek-A-Boo Veach (SLM) 6 K's: Peek-A-Boo Veach (SLM) 345 Injuries NYG- P Harry Salisbury (dead arm syndrome, 1-2 weeks) NYG- CF Curt Welch (ruptured disc (back), 11-12 months) PHI- C Lou Hardie (torn rib cage muscle, 13 months) ![]() While the Orioles might not have the best offense in the Association, there is no doubt that they possess the best 1-2 pitching tandem in the league in Bob Black and Bob Emslie. Black has fashioned a 35-17 mark with 4 SHO while Emslie is 29-12 with 3 SHO. In regards to the AA batting title, Louisville's Pete Browning (.336) has a 1 point lead over Philadelphia's Dan Brouthers (.335). Louisville has 1 game left while Philadelphia has 2 games remaining. Batting Leaders BA: Pete Browning (LOU) .336 Hits: Dan Brouthers (PHA) 161 2B: Ned Williamson (PIT), Dan Brouthers (PHA) 37 3B: Dan Brouthers (PHA) 22 HR: Jocko Milligan (PHA), Guy Hecker (LOU) 3 RBI:Jocko Milligan (PHA) 80 Runs: Arlie Latham (LOU) 105 SB: Arlie Latham (LOU) 64 Pitching Leaders ERA: Joe Knight (LOU) 1.57 Wins: Bob Black (BLO) 35 Losses: Bobby Mathews (NYP) 39 SHO: Bob Caruthers (STL) 5 K's: Bob Caruthers (STL) 332 Injuries CIN- 1B John Clapp (dislocated shoulder, 1 week) CIN- 2B Bid McPhee (back spasms, 2 weeks) PHA- C Jocko Milligan (strained rib cage muscle, 3-4 weeks)

Handiboe Fashions No-Hitter Against Metropolitans
Pittsburg, PA - The 19 year old Pittsburg Alleghenys right hander Jim "Nick" Handdiboe wasn't overpowering during their game against the New York club. In fact, he allowed 2 runs, but the most impressive feat was that he allowed 0 hits in a 6-2 Pittsburg victory this afternoon. The Metros scored both of their runs in the 3rd innning as Pittsburg commited 2 errors and allowed a couple of steals. Handiboe, a rookie in the American Association, improved his record to 15-11 for the year, but his club still remains struggling to stay above .500 for the year.

1887 End of June: National League & American Association
![]() While the Pittsburg Alleghenys struggled for 5 years in the American Association, they are showing no signs of it in their first year in the National League as they are leading the perennial favorites Boston Beaneaters by 1.5 games. Recently, the Boston club got terrible news as longtime member Ross Barnes tore his MCL and will miss almost a year of baseball. The all-time leader in almost every offensive catergory is also in the last year of his contract, so will he be retained by them or not may be the biggest question this offseason? He was hitting .390 with 69 hits and 25 RBI in 44 games this year. Batting Leaders BA: Mike Dorgan (NYG) .360 Hits: Mike Dorgan (NYG) 76 2B: Fred Mann (NYG) 17 3B: Ned Williamson (PIT) 10 HR: Mike Tiernan (NYG), Ed Crane (DTN) 5 RBI: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 42 Runs: John Rainey (NYG) 41 SB: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 39 Pitching Leaders ERA: George Bradley (WHS) 1.49 Wins: Mac MacArthur (BSN), Harry Salisbury (NYG) 14 Losses: Al Atkinson (PHI), Charlie Ferguson (PHI) 12 SHO: Jumbo McGinnis (CHN) 3 K's: Mac McArthur (BSN) 110 Injuries BSN- SS Ross Barnes (ruptured MCL, 11 months) ![]() The race for the American Association title is wide open as the teams near the halfway point of the season. Louisville is surging recently behind the pitching of Toad Ramsey who owns a 20-4 and 1.76 ERA for the season. Baltimore, who has represented the AA 3 straight years in the World Series, are right on their heels behind Bob Emslie's pitching and Oyster Burns blistering hitting. Burns was sizzling to start the year and hasn't cooled off at all as he compiled a 24 game hitting streak from mid-May to mid-June. Lastly, will somebody tell Charlie Comiskey and the Cleveland Blues to stop worrying about stealing a base everytime and just focus on some pitching!! Through 54 games, the Blues have swiped 249 bases with Comiskey having 58 of those. It has been a struggle all year long as 6 different pitchers have started games and as a team, they are allowing almost 7 runs per game.
