IRL - 1908 Season Wrap-Up
1908 INTERNATIONAL ROOKIE LEAGUE POST SEASON REPORT

Orem in the East and Brooklyn out West both won their divisions easily. Orem lost a few to close out the season, otherwise they also would have clinched by double digits. The Owlz will be making their 5th trip to the playoffs and have won the division 2 seasons in a row now. Brooklyn is the defending champs and won their 4th pennant this season. And for the tighter races, the Central and the wildcard. The Central race was between Jupiter and Yakima and those 2 were also involved in the wildcard hunt with Idaho Falls & Missoula from the East. Jupiter closed out the year winning their last 4 to clinch their 4th straight Central crown. And by virtue of Idaho Falls losing to Billings to end the season, Yakima backed into the playoffs as the wildcard team, their 2nd ever trip to the post-season and 1st since 1903. Code:

Vermont was the only early clincher in the LL, running away in the Central, their 3rd division title in the last 5 years. In the East, Hudson Valley clinched on the last game of the season by beating 2nd place Batavia for the 3rd day in a row, making a dramatic comeback to win the pennant in the last series of the season. The win gives the Renegades 5 of the last 6 East titles. Finally, the West needed a 101st game to decide who was the division winner and who was the LL wildcard team. Both Lakewood & Asheville knew there were making the playoffs, but the Blueclaws' 4-1 win in a playoff game won their 2nd straight West pennant and 3rd in their history. Asheville though again made the playoffs for a record 8th straight season. This is their 3rd consecutive wildcard berth and have won the pennant 4 times and 4 wildcard apperances in their history. 1908 PLAYOFFS WILDCARD: Not alot of competition in the wildcard series as all 4 were decided quickly in sweeps. The Washington League saw Yakima and Jupiter knock out Orem & defending champ Brooklyn respectively and the LL saw Vermont take out Asheville and defending LLCS champions Hudson Valley eliminate Lakewood. LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: The 2 LCS were different tales entirely. The LLCS had Hudson Valley sweep Vermont 3-0, outscoring the Lake Mosters 19-4 in the 3 game series. The Renegades will be making their 2nd straight trip to the IRL World Series and look to avenge last year's loss to Brooklyn. In the series, Alejandro Monterola led the way, winning series MVP while driving in 6 runs and scoring 3 himself and hitting .333 for the series. Now the WLCS was a different story indeed. Jupiter jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the series, but could do nothing to stop Yakima from coming all the way back, winning the next 3, and earning their first trip to the IRL World Series with a 3-2 series win. Nap Rucker was named series MVP depite only pitching in 1 game in the series. But it seemed like his 1 hit/complete game shutout in game 3 turned things around for the Bears and propelled them to the comeback and series win. ROOKIE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: "REVENGE IS SWEET, HUDSON VALLEY WINS 2ND TITLE" Coming oh so close last season, Hudson Valley lost to Brooklyn in 7 games and vowed they would be back this year. Living up to that promise, the Renegades beat Yakima 4-1 in the championship to win the IRL title. Over the past 4 seasons, they have been the class of the league, winning the IRL Championship this year and in 1905 and making it to the series last year. They also became only the 2nd team in league history with multiple championships, joining Ogden. SP Ramiro Montelongo was named series MVP, going 2-0 in his 2 starts and allowing 3 er in his 14 ip while stiking out 13. Code:

An 8th rd pick in the last draft, no one could have predicted this type of success for Preston, who turned out to be a pleasant surprise for Oakland. He also lead all of the IRL in OPS & Vorp and was 3rd in the WL in HR & 2nd in RBI. Leading the WL in the triple crown categories of ERA, Wins & Vorp, he was the easy choice for the award. This is their 1st pennant since their 3 straight championship seasons from 1903 to 1905. Code:

Chunichi thought they were coasting to to a 2nd straight Central league title, but after the Swallows made things interesting, they finished strong winning their last 2 to secure the pennant and a chance to avenge last year's loss in the *** Championship. 1908 PLAYOFFS NIPPON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: "TOHOKU BACK ON TOP" Tohoku was the only dynasty in league history, winning 3 straight championships from 1903 to 1905, the only extended stretch like that in league history. 3 years later, the Ninjas are back on top of the *** by defeating Chunichi 4 games to 1, a 2nd straight loss in the championship series for the Dragon. As now, they only 4-time champ, Tohoku clearly is the best team in the early history of the league. Glenn Bowers was named series MVP for Tohoku, going 11 for 24 in the series, including 1 hr, 5 rbi & 4 runs scored. Code:

He entered this season as Tohoku's starting 1b, but even the Ninjas were surprised at how well he did. Leading the league in OPS & the PL's only 100 rbi man, he was the premier run producer and power hitter in the league. He also had the 4th best Avg, 2nd most HR & 2nd best Vorp proving he wasn't just a slugger but a solid all around hitter. CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Christy "Big Six" Mathewson (Tohoku Rakuten Ninjas) - 28yo / USA - *** CY YOUNG Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 30 g - 30 gs - 19-4 rec - 0 sv - 2.05 era - 214.2 ip - 16 bb - 216 k - 0.77 whip - Career Stats: 194 g - 194 gs - 87-61 rec - 0 sv - 2.71 era - 1332.1 ip - 143 bb - 1210 k - 0.98 whip (int/7 yrs) 201 g - 201 gs - 90-63 rec - 0 sv - 2.68 era - 1380.2 ip - 154 bb - 1243 k - 0.98 whip (career/8 yrs) - Overview: With all the talent to be the best pitcher in all of baseball, it is rather shocking that this is Mathewson's 1st Cy Young award. He has had many other solid seasons, but no dominant ones like he did this year. Leading all of Japan in ERA, Opp Avg, Whip & a ridiculous K/BB ratio, he was pretty much untouchable this season. And with a career best 19 wins, he won his 1st Cy Young award. Sadly though, he injured his back in his last start of the season, missed the championship run by Tohoku, and will be out for 10 months, missing a good portion of next year. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - LF Hidetada Suzuki (Seibu Lions) - 26yo / Japan - *** ROY Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 136 g - 522 ab - .322 avg - 14 hr - 78 rbi - 82 r - 0 sb - .866 ops - Career Stats: 136 g - 522 ab - .322 avg - 14 hr - 78 rbi - 82 r - 0 sb - .866 ops (int/1 yr) 136 g - 522 ab - .322 avg - 14 hr - 78 rbi - 82 r - 0 sb - .866 ops (career/1 yr) - Overview: A 1st rd pick in 1904, Suzuki spent a few seasons on Seibu's reserve roster, finally cracking the active 25 this year as the starting leftfielder. It looks like he was well worth the wait as Suzuki was easily the most productive rookie in all of Japan. Leading all rookies in Avg, OPS, Vorp & runs scored, while leading the PL in HR & RBI as well, he had a huge 1st season and was rightfully named the league's top rookie. In putting up the 3rd highest batting avg in a season, he led all of Japan in Avg, OPS & Vorp as more of a table setter in the #3 hole than a run producer. Sasaki might have been the best all-around and thus was rewarded with the trophy. Tied for league best in ERA, he was tied for 3rd in Wins, 2nd in Vorp, 4th in K's & 6th in both Whip & Opp Avg. The 1903 1st rd pick is finally emerging as the ace Hiroshima thought he would be after his 3rd season in the league. The 2nd pick in the 1905 draft spent little time in reserves, seeing limited time immediately the next season, but not breaking thru as a starter for Hanshin until this year. Leading all *** rookies in HR & RBI he figures to be a fixture in the heart of the Tiger lineup for years to come, swinging a heavy clublike bat and pounding the ball. All 4 playoff teams got to rest their starters and set their rotations for the post-season. Defending champion Boston made a 2nd straight East pennant, their 4th in their history. The Central had 2 teams make it to the playoffs. The White Sox extended their streak to 4 straight division titles and Detroit won the wildcard berth and will be making their 1st trip to the playoffs since 1904. Finally out West, the Angels had the only 100+ win season in the AL, winning their 3rd straight pennant, 5th in history and 6th playoff berth in 9 years. All without a championship. Code:

The Marlins won the East with the only 100+ win season in the league. They will be making only their 2nd trip to the playoffs in their history, and this is their 1st pennant. Atlanta made the playoffs as the wildcard, giving them 7 trips to the post-season in their 9 year history. Cincinnati's reign over the Central continued as they won their 3rd straight division title. It gives them 5 in their history. Finally, defending NLCS champs, the Padres, won their 4th consecutive pennant. They hope to avenge last season's loss in the World Series. 1908 PLAYOFFS WILDCARD: 3 sweeps, 1 series going 4, the 1st rd of the playoffs was rather undramatic. The 2 favorites in the AL advanced, proving they really were the best teams in the league all year long. Anaheim swept Detroit 3-0 and Chicago did the same to Boston, setting up the ALCS with the 2 best in the league. In the NL, the East reigned supreme. Florida needed 4 games, but knocked out Cincy and wildcard Atlanta swept the Padres, pitting the division rivals in the NLCS. LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: The ALCS featured an 101 win and 99 win team, and the better team during the season proved to be the better team in the playoffs. The Angels beat the White Sox 4-2 in the series and finally will be playing in the World Series after 5 previous unfulfilling trips to the playoffs. Ace SP Anastasio Garate won series MVP, going 2-0 in his 2 games started. He allowed 5 er in his 2 games and struck out 10 in his 14.2 innings of work. The NL World Series representative is the wildcard team, as Atlanta beat division rival and favorite Florida rather easily, 4 games to 1. Finishing 7 games behind the Marlins in the regular season didn't matter much to the Braves who outplayed the pennant winners. Bob Childress led the way hitting, going 11 for 23 with 4 rbi & 7 runs scored in the series. WORLD SERIES: "ANGELS FINALLY WIN THE TITLE" Anaheim has been one of the most consistent and best teams in the league since its inception, always a playoff contender and a World Series hopeful. Yet until this season, they have never been able to end the season with a win and a pop of the champagne bottle. Down 3-2 to Atlanta, Anaheim used their home field advantage to come back, win games 6 & 7 and finally get the rally monkey off their backs and win the elusive World Series title. 2-time MVP Jorge Balcorta, who at 37 doesn't have many years left in him, put on a show for the ages. Hitting nearly .400 in the series, he hit 3 hrs, stole 3 bases, drove in 9 and scored 10 times. One of the most clutch performances ever in World Series history. Code:

Yes, Garate was the only 20+ game winner in the AL, but Doc White had a full run better ERA, higher Vorp & led the league in Opp Avg & Whip and had 19 wins himself. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD - SP Ed Bradby (Chicago White Sox) - 23yo / USA - MLB ROY Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 23 g - 23 gs - 13-3 rec - 0 sv - 3.71 era - 160.0 ip - 43 bb - 131 k - 1.21 whip - Career Stats: 43 g - 24 gs - 14-5 rec - 0 sv - 4.03 era - 183.1 ip - 53 bb - 155 k - 1.23 whip (majors/2 yrs) 142 g - 123 gs - 64-32 rec - 0 sv - 3.20 era - 919.1 ip - 331 bb - 702 k - 1.22 whip (career/6 yrs) - Overview: Even a bigger shock than Garate, Bradby was at best, the 3rd best rookie pitcher and 5th best rookie overall in the AL. The former IRL stud for Missoula finally got his chances as an MLB starter, and even though he was an impressive 13-3, he only started 23 games, and really didn't have the stats of some of the other rookies like Bill Bailey, George McQuillan, Eddie Grant or Masahiro Wantanabe...even with a lower Vorp than all 4 of them. But nevertheless, Bradby was named AL ROY. GOLD GLOVE AWARDS: P - Charlie Jaeger (Minnesota Twins) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 C - Nig Clarke (Los Angeles (A) Angels) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 1b - Sherry Magee (Boston Red Sox) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 3 2B - Leon Reyes (Baltimore Orioles) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 3B - "Scranton" Bill Coughlin (Oakland Athletics) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 SS - Pop Lloyd (Los Angeles (A) Angels) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 3 LF - Cornelio Cortez (Cleveland Indians) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 CF - Bill Oulton (Seattle Mariners) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2 / IRL GOLD GLOVES: 2 RF - Damario Legorreta (Minnesota Twins) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 NATIONAL LEAGUE MVP AWARD - LF Xavier Delaluz (Dan Diego Padres) - 31yo / El Salvador - MLB MVP Awards: 3 - Season Stats: 142 g - 538 ab - .361 avg - 12 hr - 84 rbi - 101 r - 24 sb - .968 ops - Career Stats: 1345 g - 5089 ab - .337 avg - 186 hr - 762 rbi - 992 r - 148 sb - .967 ops (majors/9 yrs) 1345 g - 5089 ab - .337 avg - 186 hr - 762 rbi - 992 r - 148 sb - .967 ops (career/9 yrs) - Overview: Winning his 1st MVP award since his 2 straight in 1902 & 1903, Delaluz repeated history. Both of his previous MVP awards were thought to go to Sexto Lopez, and history repeats itself this year, as again Lopez was clearly the better player but lost out. Delaluz led the NL in OPS, and that's it. Lopez was the majors leader in slugging, HR, RBI, total bases and extra base hits. And neither were tops in the NL in Vorp, ranking 2nd & 3rd behind Mel von Lenski. Another controversial MVP for Delaluz. CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Roy "Rhino" Hitt (Florida Marlins) - 21yo / USA - MLB CY YOUNG Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 34 g - 34 gs - 23-7 rec - 0 sv - 2.37 era - 277.1 ip - 87 bb - 136 k - 1.13 whip - Career Stats: 67 g - 67 gs - 32-23 rec - 0 sv - 3.41 era - 515.1 ip - 201 bb - 252 k - 1.32 whip (majors/2 yrs) 67 g - 67 gs - 32-23 rec - 0 sv - 3.41 era - 515.1 ip - 201 bb - 252 k - 1.32 whip (career/2 yrs) - Overview: Rhino certainly was a beast this year, goring opposing hitters enroute to a league leading 23 wins. Also posting a MLB high in Vorp, he proved stastically to be the league's best pitcher this season. It was a semi-close race, as any other year Red Amers or Walter Johnson easily could have won, but Hitt was too good across the board for them to have any serious consideration. With the NL's 4th best ERA, 3rd best Opp Avg & 7th best Whip, he dominated all season long. ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - CF Ambrosio Gonzalez (Colorado Rockies) - 23yo / USA - MLB ROY Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 152 g - 574 ab - .323 avg - 4 hr - 55 rbi - 58 r - 17 sb - .809 ops - Career Stats: 152 g - 574 ab - .323 avg - 4 hr - 55 rbi - 58 r - 17 sb - .809 ops (majors/1 yr) 252 g - 839 ab - .323 avg - 13 hr - 98 rbi - 142 r - 31 sb - .847 ops (career/2 yrs) - Overview: From a minor league All-star to major league ROY in 2 years, Gonzalez looks to be a rising star in baseball. A bit of a surprise as the 1906 5th rd pick didn't figure to be this good, he has proven he is a .300 hitter with decent speed, a proto-typical #2 hitter in the majors. Leading all MLB rookies in Avg, OPS & Vorp, he was very productive despite not possessing much power. GOLD GLOVE AWARDS: P - George Disch (Chicago (N) Cubs) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2 C - Roger "The Duke of Tralee" Bresnahan (Los Angeles (N) Dodgers) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 4 1b - Amadeo Anela (Florida Marlins) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 3 / IRL GOLD GLOVES: 1 2B - Christian Armstrong (Milwaukee Brewers) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 3B - "Little" Joe Yeager (Pittsburgh Pirates) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2 SS - Mike MacKinsar (Milwaukee Brewers) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1 LF - Bob Reinke (Atlanta Braves) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 2 CF - Tim Blais (Washington Nationals) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 3 RF - Kaz Imamura (New York (N) Mets) - MLB GOLD GLOVES: 1

MWL - 1908 Season Wrap-Up
1908 MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE POST SEASON REPORT
(Report Date - 1/14/09) LEAGUE REPORT Code:

As luck would have it, the schedule makers had them meet each other the final 2 series of the season to determine who would make the playoffs. In the end, Mexicali won the regular season title and will get a chance to win their 3rd straight championship and earn the title of dynasty. Meeting them will be the Hippies who finished a game behind in 2nd. This will be Guasave's 1st trip to the post-season as they have never finished better than 3rd previously. 1908 PLAYOFFS MEXICAN WINTER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP: "GUASAVE WINS TITLE IN 1ST TRIP" The Guasave Hippies ended the 2-yr reign of Mexicali as league champs, sweeping the Leopards in 3 games in shocking fashion. On paper and during the regular season, the 2 teams looked to be on equal footing, however the Leopards' experience figured to be the difference maker, when in reality, it was the upstarts of Guasave who were the best team. Johnny Green was arguably, the league's best hitter during the season, and he continued in the championship. Going 5 for 11 in the 3 games, Nutso drove in 2 and scored 4 times while leading Guasave to the title. Code:

The former 3-time MLB All-star came to Mexico last year to play out the rest of his career and in his 2nd year excelled. Ranking in the top 5 in Avg, OPS, Hits and leading in Runs, he was the top Vorp hitter in the league at the ripe old age of 44. CY YOUNG AWARD - SP Tom Densmore (Mexicali Leopards) - 29yo / USA - MWL CY YOUNG Awards: 1 - Season Stats: 14 g - 14 gs - 9-2 rec - 0 sv - 2.50 era - 97.1 ip - 25 bb - 43 k - 1.20 whip - Career Stats: 28 g - 28 gs - 16-4 rec - 0 sv - 2.27 era - 198.0 ip - 40 bb - 109 k - 1.05 whip (winter/2 yrs) 258 g - 121 gs - 55-46 rec - 0 sv - 4.68 era - 1038.1 ip - 301 bb - 545 k - 1.41 whip (career/9 yrs) - Overview: This award could be the culmination of 2 superb season for Densmore, who since coming to Mexico is 16-4 with nearly a 2 era. A former starter in the MLB with Texas, he was demoted to the bullpen and decided to sign with Mexicali to go back to the rotation. Tied for league best in wins, he was in the top 5 in ERA & Vorp and led the Leopards to their 3rd straight MWL Championship berth. Mexicali is his 10th team in 5 years. Never having more than moderate success elsewhere, he looks to have found a home in the MWL. He led all rookies in Avg, OPS, Hits & Vorp and is hoping to finally find some stability in his career.
