Derrek Lee is a perfect example of an unfinished player
![]() as for Betancourt and Hernandez, BA is one of the last sites i would use to get info on a player...now granted, im not saying that his defense is bad, its not, but i dont see ozzie in any part of that player...i dont even see Vizquel....i watched him commit 6 errors in 12 games that i saw him in and 1 was a throwing error that should have been an error on the 1b, but the other 5 were all simple routine grounders and an exchange error with the San Antonio 2b at the time...he has some range, ill say that much. I dont know how old you are, any of you, but keep in mind the scouting reports on a player named Jose Offerman and he consistantly reached 30 errors in fact i think he lead the league in errors one year. Betancourt would benefit with a move to 2b but knowing Melvin and Bavasi, they will keep him there and become frustrated over the simple plays being booted.

Jose was an amazing talent, don't know what you mean
moving to 1B was one of the worst moves of the duquette era...just to let some nomar kid get some innings in with valentin at 2nd...

Would be sweet to have a list of the unfinished guys
![]() Blalock one of them? 54 overall contact with 49 talent. Bobby Crosby too? Hit 276 this year, 22 dingers last year but he's all 50s it seems. Rickie Weeks, Prince Fielder? Most seem right on, just a couple here and there I'm curious if are finished or not. Would be crucial to our league that should be starting in a couple weeks. |

That would probably be when he was learning 2B, he had never played it until he came to America, he was a career SS up until then.

Also, you're so wrong on Betancourt it's not even funny. Anyway...... I had a look over the rosters....universally terrible, but like you say it's a work in progress. I understand you're doing this for free, but to pretend that it's any way a facsimile of MLB and it's players is ludicrous. I don't have time to start on the complete lack of accuracy in the Mariners roster, this is after all a team in your own divison, so let's take for example, the LA Dodgers. You're top prospects for the Dodgers are: Ruggiano; Dunlap: Sprout: Miller; Pedroza; La Roche; Ethier; Robinson; Young: Guzman ? Here are at least 7 propsects who you missed who are all in the top 10 of the BEST minor league system in basbeball. Russel Martin C; Johnathon Broxton RHP; Scott Elbert LHP; Blake DeWitt 3B; Matt Kemp OF; Etanislou Abreu 2B; Chin-Hung LU SS. You could also throw in there, James Loney 1B; Chuck Tiffany LHP and Willy Aybar 2B. Did you pick names out of a hat here? I mean this only the top 10 prospects in baseball's no.1 minor league system! How bad are the players outside the top 10?!? On the major league roster, players who are no longer or have never been with the Dodgers.......ahh forget it, you can see for yourselves. You're doing a lot of work, and it's a crappy job, but you better start getting some help, which I'm sure people here would do for free, or I'll buy you a subscripiton to Baseball America or send you the new Jon Sickels prospect book for xmas. I'm afraid what you have in your minor leagues at the moment is pretty close to fictional. |

In defense of halofan, I believe he uses a statistically-based system of rating prospects. I don't particularly care for it and it's probably the single biggest reason why I can't bring myself to use his set, but I'm sure there's some people who appreciate it like that. Using Sickels is probably best for rating prospects, since you can use his handy letter grading system. BA is helpful to judge a player's raw talent but not their ability to develop said talent. The Sickels 2006 book isn't out yet, but he's published a few excerpts on a few sites to give you a feel for what you can expect. Keep in mind that his truly elite prospects (Grade A) are far and few between, only a handful at most every season - those would be your 5 star prospects in OOTP.

I'd be more than willing to pay for it, and it's actually something someone should consider.

Also, with all the other things going on in your life and the time of the year, it's a tremendous credit to yourself that you can get this done at all.
Please don't take my criticism of the rosters personally, you're dedication and perseverance are admirable. |

Harvey, first you need to make sure you take your pill before posting......second, you may be right that it is a crappy job, however what proof do you have on anything you mentioned? In my defense, there are still rookies im adding, as im adding them all the time. Based on your post, you sound like a Dodger fan as you claimed they are the best farm system in the minors, yet even Baseball America doesnt agree with you. I dont use Baseball America for personal preferences. I own a subscription to Baseball America and have for 4 years. My ratings in my set have nothing to do with my own likes or dislikes regardless of what you think.
If you can provide proof of anything, i would love to see it. Remember, opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one and they all stink. There are a number of sets out there you can use, so feel free. Its one thing to critiscise my set, thats fine, but dont attack, that wont get oyu anywhere with me. i use the statistics based system as it is the fair way to judge in my opinion. If i went off Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, MLB, ESPN, CBS, John Sickles, USA Today, Billy Beane, and the dozens of fantasy sites out there, there will always be someone saying i shouldnt do that and should do it this way. Id be changing this sets ratings completely every hour of every day. Now im looking right at the set and i see quite a few of the prospects you claimed were "missing"? The stats will most likely not be done by the end of this year...christmas sucks and this is my last day at home until i begin hobbling around for the family and going to house after house for the next 4 days *ugh* the list of unfinished guys is not available as its quite long, even tho the biggest chunk is done, i released it a little early to appease the users. Jazzrack-you are one that doesnt even need to ask if you can host it there , but remember its awful*still laughing* universally agrred upon......by who? Harvey-if you are willing to pay me, you feel free to send money on my site with the donate button and ill build you a set from scratch, like i started with this one, and ill make it ANYWAY you want.

I might be blind, but I can't seem to find Bonds, Clemens, Maddux, Griffey at all in the roster set. Can anyone else find them?

that shouldnt matter, if you overwrite the rosters, the current set is what you should see....Bonds isnt finished and neither are the others listed...Schilling is another one that was mentioned earlier about not being found

Thanks for the reply Halo.(personal jibes aside) My purpose wasn't to harrass you mate, sorry if I offended you.
My concern wasn't that those prospects were missing per se, though many are, it's that they are so out of whack with any realistic type of expectation that it's meaningless. The main problem with your "statistical" based method of grading prospects is that there are very few, if any, reasonable statistical methods to judge young players, especially below the AA level. For example you have Justin Ruggiano as the Dodgers BEST prospect. The kid hits .310/.400/.517 at high A ball and all of a sudden he's the Dodgers best prospect and the 16th best in baseball? Granted he had a reasonable year, as should be expected out of a seasoned college player, but the guy has a big long swing with HUGE holes, he can't hit breaking balls and he's going to strike out a lot more as he progresses throught the ranks and is exposed by better pitching. I'm not saying he's a terrible prospect but at the moment he projects to be a 4th/5th OF'er with a bit of speed, not the no.1 prospect for the Dodgers. He'd be lucky to make a Dodgers top 30. Statistical projection of young baseball players is inherently flawed. To make an assumtion that you are better able to judge future baseball performance by looking at a high-A ball box score, than a proffesional scout can make by detailed observataion is ever so slightly skewed. I'm not trying to bust your balls here, I just think that it's an area that you could make significant improvements in. No hard feelings. P.S. If you don't believe that Baseball America is the leading source of info regarding minor league baseball then you're crazy.

i think Baseball America are facist east coast cry babies and they rate players based on popularity and word of mouth. I have taped conversations from feature writers and execs in the company that they dont get a chance to see each player they rate, and if you think otherwise without knowning me, you're crazy
![]() I used to work for Minor League baseball and the Texas League, including a stint with the Arkansas Travelers and i am plenty able to rate players, however, i dont..that is why i used stats based For the players that i dont know, i use scouting reports from professional scouts that i have befriended over the years during my time in baseball. When it concerns Ruggiano, you need to understand that i input the ratings, the game then places the player on its prospect list. Now ill bet you a large sum of money that if you begin playing games with that set, or any set for that matter, those ratings will settle and his prospect rating in the game will change, either up or down. Now my first ever set for ootp5 that i released some 2 years ago was based on my opinion and not stats, and it led to way to many re-rates for players. I then decided to use it based on stats, and it has significantly produced good results, happy users and an overall happiness with the OOTP community to the point that Markus put it in 6.5 as the roster set in the released version. i understand your points, however they are based on your opinion and are for only one team. Now lets get a player that isnt on your team.....lets try Hanley Ramirez or Felix Pie.....whats your opinion on them and how would you rate those 2....this is an example for my sake you made this statement: "Statistical projection of young baseball players is inherently flawed." Why in the world do you think i sit here, with a huge brace on this damn knee and do nothing but adjust every day, almost every day? The users see the product once its released, BUT no one except my wife and friends of mine that are hear, sees the work in progress and sees how many times the ratings are changed. Now you can do what everyone else says and release your own set, use a different set or donate to my site and ill build you a set based off of Baseball America or your own ratings/opinions. Your remarks are taken personally because this is 4 years of work that you bash because i have a different opinion of Baseball America and the Dodgers farm or Betancourt. I have nothing in the way of proof to support your claims on anything yet. Where did you hear that Ruggiano is a 4th/5th Ofer with speed? He isnt even above AA if im not mistaken, not to mention the talent ratings are not his "real ratings". I could give him or anyone else 100's across the board and what matters in the long run is his actual ratings which are pretty piss poor because he hasnt done anything to merit great ratings.

Excellent post Halo, you made some good points here. By the way I'm not a Dodgers fan, I just picked them as an example.
Just out of interest, I'm intrigued as to why you would give a guy like Ruggiano such high talent ratings in the 1st place? Did a scout give you that? If he did, that would be the first I've heard of him in that regard, like I said, he doesn't project to be anything but a replacement level OF'er. On to the players you mentioned. Hanley Ramirez: I think you rated him fairly accurately, actually a little under what you might expect. He had a dissapointng year at Portland and failed to live up to the hype of his 2004 year. I think there are legitimate concerns about his ability to handle breaking stuff and like most young guys who play at AA, he strugled to find his power stroke as the opposing pitchers were giving him a steady diet of pitches outside the strikezone that he couldn't lay off of. He still has all the tools required to be a star, but he really needs to start showing significant improvement in both his batting approach, his fielding and baserunning skills. If the Marlins put him straight into the line-up it could get ugly quickly. I think you nailed him pretty good. A lot of people would have gone higher. Felix Pie: I disagree with you a quite a bit here. I think he's definitely superior to Ramirez and has a real chance to be a quality/all-star level performer. He was ridicuosly young for AA ball this year(20) and by all accounts was showing significant improvement and delopment in his power game before he was laid down with that ankle injury. To turn in that kind of performance, at that age, in AA ball, is excellent anyway you cut it. His K rates remains a concern but he's consistently maintained a good BA and with the potential to hit 30+ HR's with 40+ SB's. He's a blue chip layer. Also he's everything defensively that Ramirez is not. In my mind he is a 5 star ootp player not 3.5. What I can't understand is how Ruggiano get rated so much higher than Pie? Talent wise there is no comparison IMHO. Thats' the big problem with statistical projection. No team in baseball would trade Pie for Ruggiano, yet you have him rated considerably higher. I have a problem with that approach, thats' all. If you want to take it personally, thats' fine too. Anyway I'm sure this is getting boring for everybody else. It's your file, your time and your effort. Good luck. |
