Chambers makes 4th defense

July1, 1911

Arthur Chambers (CH) (21-3-1) dropped challenger Young Corbett (11/14) (26-17-4) 3 times in the 8th round in route to a KO8. This was Chambers 4th defense of the title.

It was a pretty even bout as Corbett landed more punches but Chambers landed the heavier shots. Corbett's left eye started swelling in the 4th. Chambers started carrying his hands low in the 5th.

Chambers then dropped Corbett with a little over a minute left to go in the 8th. Then dropped him two more times to finish it off.

I had it 67-66 Chambers at the stoppage.

On the undercard

LW - Leach Cross (39/31) (13-12-1) UD10 Horace Leeds (24/32) (16-3) (leeds at pre)

LW - Eddie Hanlon (31/28) (14-8-1) MD10 Jack Curley (81/86) (10-6-3) (curley at pre)

HW - William Hague (22/19) (17-2) KO1 Billy Wilson (90/99) (18-21-1) (hague at pre, wilson at post)

LH - Billy Stift (30/23) (16-6) SD10 Howard Morrow (17/27) (15-5) (both at pre)

LH - Fred Cooley (club) (14-17-2) UD8 Jack Curtain (UR) (4-5) (curtain at pre for this club fight, curtain stepped up to LH in a weight adjusted fight)

Excellent stuff as always Mike.
Just a quick question. How do you handle fighters moving up in weight. Do you use the rating s for the weight class above, or do you change there ratings, thus keeping there records intact.

I determine a group of fighters at the end of every year who have a shot at moving up. If they move up then I use the weight adjust chart on cornerwork. The only think I do different is that they have a 50/50 chance of losing a point in 4 categories (instead of automatically losing the point) So I roll for CFB, CFS, HP, KD1. Then I make a new rating record so that their record stays intact.

So like Young Corbett has a FW and a LW rating in my game. The FW rating he is an 8 overall and only a 7 as a LW. Some get lucky. I have had 2 so far that rolled perfect and didn't change at all moving up.

Now sometimes I have two fighters from different weight classes scheduled to fight (like Cooley and Curtain above) they have a 75% chance of it being a normal fight and only a 25% chance of it being weight adjusted.

OKay here's how I figure out % for chances to move up at the end of the year.

I randomly pick guys who I think should try to move up .. no method there.

Each guy I pick starts with 30%
10% for being a former champ
5% if they are a current champ (15% total)
2% for each successful title defense
5% if over 30 fights
5% if currently ranked in the top 10

20% if they have lost 5 title fights (meaning had their shot need to try new division)

Mike,

That's good stuff. I have been stymied at how to do this and how to move guys up in weight class as they progress in their careers. I should have assumed that you veterans would have already come up with a solution to this.

Thank you.

So far I haven't jumped anyone two divisions but I can see some who are aching to do so, so it might happen at some point. I've had a couple of two division champs.

Lewis retains CBU belt

July 7, 1911

Ted "Kid" Lewis (18/13) (16-2) (pre) scored a UD12 over Matt Wells (20/24) (14-1-1) (pre) for his first defense of the CBU title.

Wells dropped Lewis in the 8th but other than that Lewis controlled the fight. Lewis was penalized a point in the 9th after his 5th total warning. Wells rallied to win the 10th to cut it close, but Lewis won the last two rounds going away.

I had it 115-112 as did ringside expert, Scott Lang. The official judges had it 115-111/115-111/115-110.

On the undercard

WW - Billy McMillan (63/61) (14-3-2) UD10 Perry Queenan (51/59) (8-6-2) (both at pre)

LW - Jack Ward (UR) (12-1) UD10 Eddie Carroll (90/92) (12-7) 95-94 (both at pre)

FW - Benny Soloman (46/33) (17-5-2) KO9 Frank Maguire (24/34) (15-6-2) (maguire at pre)

BW - Pal Moore (UR) (8-0) UD8 Ned Morris (club) (8-12-2) 78-74 (both at pre)

HW - George Cotton (UR) (7-0-2) KO5 Roger Escude (UR/113) (7-7-1) 39-37 (both at pre, escude moves to main)

July 8, 1911

Sam Langford (CH) (29-6-2) had all three of his titles on the line against Dominic McCaffrey (5/7) (34-12-3) and he won with a KO10.

McCaffrey was never in this fight, Langford was close to pitching a shutout and finally ended the night late in the 10th round.

McCaffrey had his right eye swelling from the 4th round on and was out of gas by the 7th.

WW - William Sullivan (63/61) (13-7-2) TKO3 Johnny Frayne (99/100) (10-14-1) (frayne at pre, frayne stepped up to WW for this fight, moved to prime after)

Opening bout of my current fight card MW Johnny McGlade won his 10th out of his last 11th fight to move his record 22-22-3 and climb back to the main division.

He is at end so it won't last long. Now the amazing thing about this is he dropped to club in July of 1901 with a record of 0-5. This is his first trip back to the main division and it comes in July of 1911, a full 10 years later.

It was only 5 days shy of a full 10 years.
