We head out on the road now for a couple of weeks. First stop is Cincinnati, where we will meet manager/CF Silver Borresen (34-6.9) and his red hot Reds in a 3 game series. They are 17-2 in their last 19 games. We are 6-4 against them on the season, but lost 2 of 3 to them in Detroit a month ago the last time we met. They are 4th in the League in scoring with 4.7 runs per game (Detroit is #2 with 5.1). They are 4th in runs allowed with 4.8 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.6). Their League Park has been toned down this season. It is still a decent place to hit, but the home runs are a lot harder to come than they used to be. Detroit Wolverines (54-25 .684 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Cincinnati Reds (44-35 .557 10 GB in 2nd place) Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 24-9 2.24 7.8-1.0-5.5 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. John Stevens, Cin. (31-8.2) (R 16-14 2.43 8.6-1.6-3.8) We are 2-1 against Stevens on the season. Won - 6 to 5 in 10 innings Down 4 to 3 in the top of the 9th, 2B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) tripled home run to tie the game and scored when CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) singled to put us up a run. But in the bottom of the 9th, 2 errors gave the Reds a run and tied the game. In the top of the 10th, SS Ed Engelhardt (23-5.0) singled home a run to put us ahead for good. He had 2 hits. In 8 innings, Rice allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. After mentioning that Rice had not had an extra-base hit, he rectified that by hitting a triple today, scoring a run and knocking 1 in. In 2 innings, Perrell allowed 1 unearned run on 2 hits. In 10 innings, Stevens gave us 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. We made 6 errors and Cincinnati made 2. 2B Ed Aldrich had 2 hits with the triple and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. He now has an 11 game hitting streak. C Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) had 2 hits and scored a run and threw out 4 of 8 base stealers. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) had 2 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored a run but made 2 errors. For the Reds, ex-Wolverine LF Willie Kirby (26-2.1) had 2 hits, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. RF Fleet Wilcox (31-4.9) had 2 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Liberty League: Indianapolis (5) at New York (2): Jimmy Euler (27-5.5) (15-6) over Miah Turner (27-5.3) (17-12). Euler allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had 2 hits and a walk and scored a run. CF Ed Slonim (25-8.5) had 2 hits with a double and 3 walks, stole 3 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Grand National Association: Chicago (4) at Brooklyn (2): Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (20-14) over Al Green (25-3.8) (14-20). Seguin allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. Last edited by Questdog; 12-01-2015 at 01:15 PM. |

Detroit Wolverines (55-25 .688 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Cincinnati Reds (44-36 .550 11 GB in 2nd place) Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 14-8 2.27 8.4-1.2-2.9 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Charlie Branham, Cin. (28-4.2) (R 18-12 3.17 9.5-1.5-3.0) We are 2-3 against Branham on the season, but pounded him pretty good last time we met. Won - 5 to 2 Frazier shut them out until our 1st 2 errors of the game in the 9th spoiled it. Frazier allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and was beaned by a pitch and scored 2 runs. Branham gave us 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits. We made 2 errors and Cincinnati made 1. 2B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) had 3 hits and a walk, stole a base and scored 2 runs. His hitting streak is now at 12 games. This streak started the game after he ended a 14 game streak, so he has hit safely in 26 of his last 27 games. And in the game he did not get a hit, he walked 3 times. During this 12 game streak he is batting 23 for 48 (.479). CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) hit a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) had a hit and a walk and 2 RBIs. For the Reds, ex-Wolverine LF Willie Kirby (26-2.1) hurt his shoulder making a catch and will miss a couple of weeks. Liberty League: Cleveland (6) at Louisville (0): Lou Townley (26-3.4) (19-14) over Jumbo Hoops (23-6.5) (10-7). Townley allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. LF Ace Trimmell (30-5.0) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Indianapolis (7) at New York (3): Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (11-20) over Jack Roberts (36-6.1) (7-13). DeVaux allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Pittsburgh (4) at Boston (5): Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (13-19) over Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (15-15). 2B Mike Stables (32-7.1) hit his 6th home run of the season. Grand National Association: St. Louis (5) at Providence (6): Ed Hodges (28-3.2) (13-11) over Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (12-17). The Grays won the game in the bottom of the 9th thanks to a 2-out error. Chicago (9) at Brooklyn (10): Tom Homer (24-5.0) (5-5) over Pony Stanley (25-6.2) (18-9). Rookie 2B Willie Snyder (22-7.5) had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBIs. For the Colts, CF Ike Allen (34-5.3) wrenched his back and will miss 3 weeks. 3B Frank Seccombe (27-5.2) in his 1st game in the majors since 1886, had a hit and 2 walks and scored 2 runs, but strained his hip (He's 27, right? Not 72?) and will miss 5 to 6 weeks. Kansas City (7) at Omaha (6) in 10 innings: Piggy Lambert (24-8.2) (10-10) over Tom Lee (30-6.0) (13-14) in relief of Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2). LF Lou Baggett (26-4.2) had 3 hits with a triple, stole 2 bases, scored 4 runs, including the go-ahead tun in the 10th, and had an RBI. CF Heinie Ashmore (23-6.0) had 2 hits with a double and 5 RBIs. His single knocked in Baggett in the 10th. Washington (5) at Milwaukee (6): Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (19-14) over Ed Bush (28-5.3) (15-19). 2B Lou Bohus (28-5.4) had 2 hits and a walk, stole 4 bases and scored 4 runs. Another rain-out today, so we are off down the road to Louisville. Today is 8-8-88! Liberty League: Cleveland (1) at Louisville (3): William McLeod (29-5.3) (15-16) over Willard Clapp (26-4.3) (6-14). McLeod allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. Clapp allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 7. Each team only made 1 error. There is no justice in baseball. Indianapolis (0) at New York (1): Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (14-11) over Levi Giddens (36-4.8) (6-11). McDowell allowed 3 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. Giddens allowed 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Each team made 2 errors. See above (the no justice comment). Grand National Association: St. Louis (1) at Providence (7): Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (21-14) over Fred Barrow (36-4.7) (5-16). Ashton allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. Chicago (7) at Brooklyn (5): Skyrocket Howard (23-5.4) (6-6) over William David (25-3.6) (17-15). SS Bob Robertson (25-4.1) hit 2 triples, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B Joe Vaughan (33-5.2) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Kansas City (6) at Omaha (8): Lee Sprague (28-3.5) (21-5) over Al McClaughry (24-5.6) (11-10). Rookie RF Tom Nelson (23-5.2) bruised his foot and will miss a week or two. Washington (4) at Milwaukee (0): Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (12-18) over Dave Ward (23-6.1) (7-9). Don't put him out to pasture quite yet! Yurkovich allowed 2 hits, 4 walks and struck out 7. John Hagadorn (38-6.3) had 3 hits with a double and an RBI. Last edited by Questdog; 12-01-2015 at 03:39 PM. |

We are in Louisville, Kentucky, today to begin a 3 game series against manager Elmer Higgins (42-6.4) and his Bourbons. We are 6-3 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games in Detroit a month ago the last time we met. All 3 games were 1-run wins, however, and one went 12 innings. In fact, the only game we have played against them all season that was won by anyone by more than 2 runs was a game we lost, 4 to 1. They are dead last in scoring with 4.2 runs per game (Detroit is #2 with 5.1). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 4.7 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.6). Their Eclipse Park is probably the 2nd best pitcher's park in the League, next to the Polo Grounds, but it is not close. Home runs over the left field fence are near impossible to hit. Detroit Wolverines (56-25 .691 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Louisville Bourbons (34-46 .425 21.5 GB in 7th place) Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 24-9 2.24 7.8-1.0-5.4 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Mert Gross, Lou. (30-5.8) (R 3-9 3.78 9.9-3.4-2.1) Gross is another of those meatball pitchers that we have not hit as well as we should. We beat him the only time we faced him, but it took 12 innings. Rice has not exactly been bad of late, but it has been a long time since he has had a truly outstanding game. The last time he allowed 5 or fewer hits was on June 14. He has allowed 39 hits in his last 36 innings. Lost - 4 to 3 Okay, now you can say Rice has been bad of late. We were out-hit 12 to 5. Even so, the game was tied going into the bottom of the 9th, but Rice gave up a double and a single to a pair of rookies and the game was over. 2B Tom Walker (25-3.8) led off with the double, his 3rd hit of the day, and LF Ed Phillips (25-3.5) singled him home with his 2nd hit of the day. Walker also stole a base and scored another run. Rice allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. He only threw 87 pitches because he was just flinging it down the middle of the plate. Gross gave us 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. He did not allow an earned run. At bat, he had 3 hits with an RBI. We made 3 errors and Louisville made 4. 2B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) went hitless, ending his streak at 12 games. The only player who came to play for us today was RF Ben Smith (29-6.7). He hit a triple, drew a walk, stole 2 bases and scored all 3 of our runs. He also threw out 2 base runners, one at 3rd and one at home. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (3) at New York (5): Miah Turner (27-5.3) (18-12) over Tom Lilly (28-6.4) (18-14). Lilly only went 4 innings, because he was knocked senseless sliding into 3rd base. He is likely out for the season, they say, and are hoping no surgery will be required on his head. 2B Dave Hay (26-5.7) had 2 hits with his 4th home run of the season, drew a walk, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. For the Puddlers, C Evan Eckberg (32-3.5) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year and had 2 RBIs. Cleveland (5) at Cincinnati (4): Artie Boucher (25-6.1) (9-17) over John Stevens (31-8.2) (16-16). Cleveland scored all of their runs in the 1st inning when the Reds made 3 errors. Boucher allowed 5 hits, 6 walks and struck out 2. Stevens allowed 6 hits, 5 walks and struck out 7. Rookie 2B Zachary Pfeiffer (20-4.5) hit a bases-loaded and -clearing double in that 1st inning. For the Reds, 1B Jim Lagana (32-6.6) hit his 5th home run of the season with 2 men on base. RF Fleet Wilcox (31-4.9) tore up his shoulder diving for a ball and is done for the season. Indianapolis (6) at Boston (7): William Little (27-6.0) (16-13) in his 1st game after missing over 2 weeks with a virus over Jimmy Euler (27-5.5) (15-7). CF Pat Stafford (27-5.4) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base and scored a run. For the Hoosiers, LF Hick Fahl (31-5.3) hit his 8th home run of the season. Grand National Association: Washington (10) at Milwaukee (11): Kid Henze (34-5.2) (4-3) over Dad Marshall (29-4.4) (2-2). Henze won despite 9 errors by Milwaukee. At bat, he had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. Marshall beaned 3 batters, but only walked 2. Hmmmm. Ex-Wolverine 1B George House (29-4.3) hit 2 doubles, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. For the Monuments, 3B George Heubner (35-5.2) had 4 hits with 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Well, we were all sad here to hear of P Tom Lilly (28-6.4) getting hurt, but we were also excited for P Charlie Morlock (39-6.7) to get a chance at 3 more wins to reach 300 for his illustrious career. But apparently the resolution to legalize right-handed pitching in Pennsylvania was squashed in committee because Pittsburgh did not call up Morlock, who is 10-9 with a 2.15 ERA in the International League (A). He is leading Buffalo in ERA and has the lowest OPS against of any of their pitchers. Instead, the Puddlers called up left-hander Fred Horner (27-3.8), who was 7-11 with a 3.43 ERA and an OPS over 100 points higher than Morlock. Well, pudd. Detroit Wolverines (56-26 .683 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Louisville Bourbons (35-46 .432 20.5 GB in 7th place) Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 15-8 2.18 8.4-1.1-2.9 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Jumbo Hoops, Lou. (23-6.5) (R 10-7 2.14 6.6-1.8-3.9) We are 0-1 against Hoops so far. The last time we faced him, we lost in 18 innings, though he was not there at the end. He has been the toughest pitcher to hit in the Liberty League so far this season, but I bet we do better against him than we did against the Gross meatball. Won - 8 to 2 I win the bet. Frazier allowed 13 hits, no walks and struck out 5. Hoops gave us 11 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits. Opposing pitchers are wearing us out at the plate of late. We made 2 errors and Louisville made 5. 2B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) went hitless; the 1st time he has had back-to-back games this season without a hit. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) had 2 hits with a double and scored a run, but had to come out with a stiff back and will be hobbled for about a week. RF Ben Smith (29-6.7) had 2 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and threw out another base-runner. C Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. 3B Jesse Flanders (28-5.4) had 2 hits and a walk and an RBI. LF Al Lewis (23-9.1) hit an inside-the-park home run, his 5th home run of the season. For the Bourbons, rookie 2B Tom Walker (25-3.8) had 3 hits for the 2nd game in a row, but no runs or RBIs. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (3) at New York (1) in 12 innings: Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (16-15) over Jack Roberts (36-6.1) (7-14). 3B Al Oglesby (24-7.6) hit a 2-out 2-run triple in the top of the 12th. In 12 innings, Mathews allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Roberts allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. Nevertheless, he suffered his 9th straight defeat. For the Gothams, 3B Ed Glass (29-4.5) hit a double and his 2nd home run of the season. Cleveland (7) at Cincinnati (2): Lou Townley (26-3.4) (20-14) over Charlie Branham (28-4.2) (18-14). Townley allowed 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Ex-Wolverine 2b Tom Nelson (22-6.6) had 3 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs, but fractured his ankle and will miss the rest of the season. LF Ace Trimmell (30-5.0) had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run, but sprained his ankle and will miss 2 to 3 weeks. Indianapolis (8) at Boston (20): Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (14-19) over Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (11-21). DeVaux went the distance. He did not pitch very well, of course, but 14 errors by the Hoosiers did not help much. 2B Mike Stables (32-7.1) had 3 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had 5 RBIs. For the Hoosiers, 1B Dick Thacker (27-7.6), who contributed 1 error to the pile, hit his 2nd home run of the season. 3B Fred Boss (25-6.0) made 5 errors, but even if he had made none, they still would have committed 9 miscues! LF Hick Fahl (31-5.3) sprained his ankle and will miss about 2 weeks. Boston, who had made the 2nd most errors in the League coming into this game, did not make one (and now have made the 3rd most errors for the season). Grand National Association: Omaha (5) at Kansas City (4): Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2) (18-7) over Piggy Lambert (24-8.2) (10-11). Rice allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2. SS Dave Henderson (25-4.1) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs. Washington (3) at Chicago (1): Ed Bush (28-5.3) (16-19) over Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (20-15). Bush allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Seguin allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 6. C George Wright (32-4.8) hit his 2nd home run of the season. Providence (6) at St. Louis (5) in 11 innings: Ed Hodges (28-3.2) (14-11) over Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (12-18). C Spider Sullivan (27-6.7) had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs, including the go-ahead run in the 11th. Brooklyn (1) at Milwaukee (5): Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (20-14) over Al Green (25-3.8) (14-21). Buchanan allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. At bat, he hit a double. Detroit Wolverines (57-26 .687 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Louisville Bourbons (35-47 .427 21.5 GB in 8th (last) place) Wild Bill Perrell, Det. (24-7.3) (R 6-1 2.09 5.8-1.3-3.1 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. William McLeod, Lou. (29-5.6) (R 15-16 1.82 7.4-3.1-4.3) We are 3-0 against our old friend McLeod this season. Lost - 4 to 3 McLeod's a good pitch; we could not keep beating him forever. We were up 3 to 2 in the bottom of the 8th when 3 straight errors gave them 2 runs and the lead. Perrell allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. McLeod gave us 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he hit a double. Each team made 3 errors. C Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) was hit by a pitch on his hand and has a bruised thumb. He will be lame for about a week. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (5) at New York (6): Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (15-11) over Fred Horner (27-3.8) (0-1). McDowell allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. I hope Horner loses every game he pitches. Cleveland (4) at Cincinnati (3) in 10 innings: Willard Clapp (26-4.3) (7-14) over William Butina (26-5.6) (8-9). C Charlie Harris (27-5.9) had 2 hits with a home run and 2 RBIs. Indianapolis (8) at Boston (7): Levi Giddens (36-4.8) (7-11) over Freddy Wood (32-6.3) (6-5). 1B Dick Thacker (27-7.6) had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBIs. For the Shamrocks, manager/1B Pete Bucolo (40-4.1) pulled a muscle and will miss about 5 weeks. It is the 5th time Bucolo has been sidelined this season, all with muscle pulls. Grand National Association: Omaha (2) at Kansas City (1): Lee Sprague (28-3.5) (22-5) over Al McClaughry (24-5.6) (11-11). Omaha scored a run in the top of the 9th on a wild pitch to take the lead. Sprague allowed 10 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. McClaughry allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Washington (7) at Chicago (1): Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (13-18) over Pony Stanley (25-6.2) (18-10). Yurkovich allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run. 2B Kitty Covington (23-5.4) had 2 hits and 2 walks, stole a base and scored 3 runs. Brooklyn (4) at Milwaukee (3): William David (25-3.6) (18-15) over Dave Ward (23-6.1) (7-10). C Jim Granier (33-5.7) had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. |

Burnett hit a home run, drew a walk and scored twice. 3B Al Sarbacker (27-4.8) had 4 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Rookie RF Ed Anderson (20-7.5) had 3 hits with a double, stole 4 bases and scored 3 runs. Washington (6) at Chicago (5): Dad Marshall (29-4.4) (3-2) over Skyrocket Howard (23-5.4) (6-7). Washington scored twice in the top of the 9th to take the lead. Providence (3) at St. Louis (4): Fred Barrow (36-4.7) (6-16) over Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (21-15). Providence scored a run in the top of the 9th to tie the game, but St. Louis scored in the bottom half to win on a 2-out passed ball. Brooklyn (9) at Milwaukee (5): Tom Homer (24-5.0) (6-5) over Kid Henze (24-5.2) (4-4). LF Monte Moody (30-6.9) had 3 hits with his 2nd home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. |

We are in Boston, but the weather will prevent us from starting our series today. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (10) at Cincinnati (1): Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (17-15) over John Stevens (31-8.2) (16-17). Mathews allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. In July, Stevens won 7 games in a row. Since ending that streak, he has not won a game with 1 12 inning no-decision and 4 losses. We are in Boston to face manager Pete Bucolo (40-4.1) and his Shamrocks in what will now be an abbreviated 2 game series. Bucolo will not play as he is currently injured. Boston is the only team we have a losing record against so far this season. We are 4-5 and lost 2 games to them in another abbreviated series in Detroit a month ago the last time we met. They scored 16 runs in the 2 games. The last time we were in Boston the runs were flying left and right until the final game of the series when we were shut out. We split the 4 games. They are 1st in the League in scoring, by a hefty margin, with 5.6 runs per game (Detroit is #2 with 5.1). They are dead last in runs allowed with 5.4 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.6). The re-configuring they have done to their South Ends Grounds to make it more hitter friendly has made the place a joke and I hope they have learned their lesson and undo the mess next year. The Home/Road splits of their players (home average 1st): C Hub West .308/.209 1b Pete Bucolo .294/.267 2B Mike Stables .306/.236 3B Highball Baxter .325/.293 SS Tug Crane .272/.243 LF Charlie Warner .306/.253 CF Pat Stafford .339/.288 RF Dan Abrams .278/.196 Average Splits: .316/.248 (This is the average of their averages, not the actual home/road averages. That would take too much work to figure) Okay, I figured it. Their overall team batting average at home is .274. On the road: .238 Slugging at home: .402 On the Road: .330 They score 6.7 runs per game at home and 4.7 on the road. They allow 6.5 runs per game at home and 4.5 on the road. A non-related odd tidbit: We are currently the only team in the Liberty League with a winning record against left-handed pitchers. We are 14-3. Boston is 2nd best at 8-8. For left-handed pitchers, we have Dave Frazier, Cleveland has Willard Clapp and Pittsburgh has everyone else. Detroit Wolverines (57-27 .679 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Boston Shamrocks (44-42 .512 14 GB in 4th place) Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 24-10 2.30 8.0-1.0-5.3 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. William Little, Bos. (27-6.0) (R 16-13 3.02 10.0-1.7-4.9) We are 2-2 against Little this season. Rice has not been very good lately and the South End Grounds does not seem like the place to get yourself right. We are going to have to score in double digits to win, I think. The 1st time Rice and Little squared off in Boston we won 12 to 11 in 11 innings. Won - 5 to 4 The score is not indicative of the amount of offensive activity that was going on in this game. We had 4 players thrown out at the plate. We were up 5 to 4 in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs when 2B Mike Stables (32-7.1) hit a triple and brought LF Charlie Warner (34-9.2) to the plate. The way Warner has hit us in the past, I was certain a game-winning home run was in the cards. He did hit a long drive to deep right-center but RF Ben Smith (29-6.7) made a diving catch to preserve the win! Rice allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Little gave us 16 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBIs. We made 1 error and Boston made 5. 3B Jesse Flanders (28-5.4) had 4 hits and scored 2 runs. He started off the season very poorly at the plate and then had to sit for 2 months with a sore elbow. Since coming back in July (19 games ago), however, he has hit over .300 and played great defense. LF Al Lewis (23-9.1) had 5 hits, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. He raised his season's batting average 15 points in 1 game! He is only the 2nd Wolverine ever to get 5 hits in a 9-inning game. Jocko Cole (26-6.1) did it last season. C Jimmy Babcock (31-6.9) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. Liberty League: Indianapolis (13) at Louisville (8): Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (12-21) over William McLeod (29-5.6) (16-17). CF Ed Slonim (25-8.5) had 3 hits with a triple and 2 walks, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs. For the Bourbons, CF Pat Womack (27-6.3) hit a double and drew a walk, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. Pittsburgh (10) at Cincinnati (6): Joe Peters (32-4.9) (6-8) over William Butina (26-5.6) (8-10). RF Joe Coffey (32-5.2) had 3 hits with 2 triples and a walk, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. LF Billy Galloway (27-5.3) hit a triple and his 3rd home run of the season, drew 2 walks, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Do you remember when the Reds were hot? Well, since we ended their streak they have lost 7 in a row. Cleveland (4) at New York (0): Lou Townley (26-3.4) (21-14) over Miah Turner (27-5.3) (18-13). Townley allowed 2 hits, no walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had 2 hits and scored a run. It is the 2nd straight 2-hitter for Townley. The game before that, he allowed 3 hits. 7 hits and 2 unearned runs in his last 27 innings. Turner allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 9. RF Tom Steiner (22-4.9) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. C Charlie Harris (28-5.9) had 2 hits and has now hit in 20 games in a row. Grand National Association: Providence (9) at Kansas City (6): Ed Wison (27-7.3) (11-10) over Al McClaughry (24-5.6) (11-12). 3B Ed Knight (25-5.1) had 4 hits, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. LF Fred Kerr (26-5.2) hit a home run. McClaughry has lost 4 in a row and only 1 of them has been a well-pitched game. Brooklyn (6) at Chicago (8): Pony Stanley (25-6.2) (19-10) over William David (25-3.6) (18-16). C Fred Blevins (29-6.4) hit his 3rd home run of the year. Omaha (4) at St. Louis (8): Ed Copeland (22-6.0) (2-8) over Lee Sprague (28-3.5) (22-6). St. Louis scored 6 runs in the 5th inning. Washington (2) at Milwaukee (11): Dave Ward (23-6.1) (8-10) over Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (13-19). Ward allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. |

We need a win today to have a winning record against the Shamrocks on the season and thus have a winning record against everyone and also to keep ourselves as the only team with a winning record against lefties. Cincinnati made 6 errors to none for Pittsburgh. Cleveland (2) at New York (0): Willard Clapp (26-4.3) (8-14) over Jack Roberts (36-6.1) (7-15). Clapp allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. We are in New York to begin a 3 game series with manager Paul Richards (47-5.4) and his Gothams today. We are 9-2 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games in Detroit back at the 4th of July the last time we met. They are 3rd in the League in scoring with 4.7 runs per game (Detroit is #2 with 5.2). They are also 3rd in the League in runs allowed with 4.8 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.6). Their Polo Grounds is about the exact opposite of Boston's South End Grounds with pitchers having it their way here as much or more as hitters have it their way in Boston. Detroit Wolverines (59-27 .686 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at New York Gothams (41-47 .466 19 GB in 5th place) Wild Bill Perrell, Det. (24-7.3) (R 6-2 2.11 5.9-1.9-3.0 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Tom McDowell, N.Y. (24-8.0) (R 15-11 2.64 7.9-2.6-3.2) We are 3-1 against McDowell, but the last time we met we did not secure the win until the bottom of the 9th and only won 2 to 1. Lost - 4 to 2 We did not get our 1st hit until the 5th inning., but the game was tied at 2 until 3B Ed Glass (29-4.5) hit his 3rd home run of the season in the bottom of the 7th. Perrell allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and an RBI. McDowell gave us 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out no one. Each team made 2 errors. 1B Pat Dunbar (26-8.3) had 3 of our 5 hits and scored both of our runs. RF Ben Smith (29-6.7) had to leave the game with a sore shoulder and will miss 2 weeks. That makes 3 starters out with injuries: our 3, 4 and 5 hitters..... I sent for RF Hi Bowman (24-5.5) from Syracuse to come spend a few weeks with us. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (0) at Louisville (1): Jumbo Hoops (23-6.5) (11-9) over Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (17-16). Hoops allowed hits, no walks and struck out 2. Mathews allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Indianapolis (6) at Cincinnati (7): John Stevens (31-8.2) (17-17) over Jimmy Euler (27-5.5) (16-8). The Reds scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th to win; the winning run scoring on a passed ball. C John Whelan (27-4.6) had 3 hits and a walk, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. For the Hoosiers, RF Ed Wakefield (28-5.8) had 3 hits with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs. He now has 12 home runs on the season. CF Ed Slonim (25-8.5) pulled a muscle and will miss 2 to 3 weeks. Cleveland (4) at Boston (5): William Little (27-6.0) (17-14) over Artie Boucher (25-6.1) (9-18). Little allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 6. Boston hit 3 home runs, all in the 6th inning: 3B Highball Baxter (22-5.7), LF Charlie Warner (34-9.2), his League leading 13th, and 1B Bill Gordon (31-3.7), his 7th. |

We wanted to play a double-header today, but the weather would not let us start early enough to get 2 games in. Detroit Wolverines (59-28 .678 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at New York Gothams (42-47 .472 18 GB in 5th place) Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 25-10 2.35 8.1-1.0-5.3 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Miah Turner, N.Y. (27-5.3) (R 18-13 2.30 7.2-1.5-4.4) We are 3-1 against Turner, but the one loss was a shut out. Now, this ought to be a place where RIce can get himself straightened out. C Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) says he is ready to give it a go today. Won - 8 to 0 I'd say Rice did a pretty good job of straightening out! Rice allowed 2 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit. Turner gave us 12 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. We made 3 errors and New York made 5. Everyone in the lineup had at least 1 hit. 2B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) had 2 hits and a walk, stole 3 bases and scored 2 runs. 3B Jesse Flanders (28-5.4) hit a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. C Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) hit a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B Pat Dunbar (26-8.3) hit a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. SS Ed Engelhardt (23-5.0) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the season, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (13) at Louisville (4): Fred Horner (27-3.8) (1-2) over Count Childs (32-3.1) (4-12). C Wilson Wendling (27-4.1) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year, drew a walk and scored 2 runs. For the Bourbons, 3B Art Hedman (32-4.5) had 4 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. Indianapolis (1) at Cincinnati (13): Charlie Branham (28-4.2) (20-14) over Levi Giddens (36-4.8) (8-12). Branham allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. He had 4 hits last time out. I have no way of checking but 7 hits in 2 straight games has to be a record for pitchers. Manager/LF Silver Borresen (34-6.9) had 4 hits and a walk, stole a base and scored 3 runs. For the Hoosiers, C Fred Smith (33-6.8) hit his 2nd home run of the season. Cleveland (9) at Boston (6): Lou Townley (26-3.4) (22-14) over Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (14-21). 3B Charlie Taylor (33-5.2) had 3 hits with a triple and scored 2 runs. LF Tom Laarman (27-7.8) had 2 hits and an RBI in his 1st to times up, but tore up his shoulder making a throw and will miss the rest of the season. For the Shamrocks, RF Dan Abrams (30-5.1) hit his 4th home run of the season. Grand National Association: Brooklyn (6) at Kansas City (1): William David (25-3.6) (19-16) over Piggy Lambert (24-8.2) (11-12). David allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. The next game after setting the all-time GNA record for strikeouts in a game, Lambert struck out 1 batter. Washington (10) at St. Louis (9): Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (14-19) over Ed Copeland (22-6.0) (2-9). Washington scored 7 times in the top of the 9th to take the lead. Rookie 1B Dick Blake (27-6.7) had 3 hits with a triple and scored 2 runs. Providence (9) at Milwaukee (6): Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (22-16) over Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (21-15). Providence scored 4 times in the top of the 9th to take the lead. LF Al Young (24-4.8) had 2 hits with a 9th inning home run, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. |

C Jim Granier (33-5.7) had 3 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. He now has a 20 game hitting streak. He had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. For the Grays, LF Al Young (24-4.8) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year and 2nd in as many days, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. |

We traveled 700 miles, leaving the gray, rainy weather of New York for the gray, rainy weather of Indianapolis. No game today. Liberty League: Cleveland (4) at Pittsburgh (5) in 11 innings: Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (18-16) over Willard Clapp (26-4.3) (8-15). Both teams scored in the 10th. The winning run in the bottom of the 11th, scored on that raging new Ending-the-Game fashion that is sweeping the land: a passed ball. SS Jim Ware (34-5.6) had 3 hits, stole a base and scored a run. New York (5) at Cincinnati (6) in 11 innings: John Stevens (31-8.2) (18-17) over Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (16-12) in relief of Jack Roberts (36-6.1). New York scored a run in the top of the 11th, but manager/LF Silver Borresen (34-6.9) hit a 2-out 2-run single to win the game in the bottom half of the inning. He had 3 hits and stole a base. Roberts had to leave the game with tightness in his back and will miss 2 weeks. Boston (7) at Louisville (3): William Little (27-6.0) (18-14) over William McLeod (29-5.6) (16-19). Grand National Association: Brooklyn (7) at St. Louis (1): Al Green (25-3.8) (15-23) over Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (13-20). Green allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. 1B Fred Collins (24-5.2) had 2 hits with his 4th home run of the season, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. |

We are in Indianapolis for what will now be a 2 game series with manager John Cusick (47-7.5) and his Hoosiers today. We are 11-3 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games in Detroit 2 weeks ago the last time we met. They are 5th in runs scored with 4.7 per game (Detroit is #2 with 5.2). They are 7th in runs allowed with 5.3 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.5). Their Seventh Street Park is the easiest place in the League to hit home runs by a wide margin. 1B San Cowan (32-5.1) says he's ready to play today. Detroit Wolverines (60-28 .682 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Indianapolis Hoosiers (41-50 .451 20.5 GB in 6th place) Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 26-10 2.28 7.9-0.9-5.2 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Jimmy Euler, Ind. (27-5.5) (R 16-8 2.23 8.0-2.1-3.8) We are 3-3 against Euler on the season. (28-5.7) (L 18-8 2.02 8.4-1.0-3.1) Boucher is another of those meatball pitchers that everyone else humiliates, but we can't hit.
