Cincinnati management has confirmed that virtually every Reds' player is available on the trade market "if the price is right" to quote a popular game show.

Just four seasons removed from a Joy in Mudville League World Series title, the Reds have tumbled into last place.

Reds' GM Tim L. verified that the Cincinnati roster is one the block with the exceptions of short stop Dave Concepcion, outfielder Ken Griffey and pitchers Gary Nolan and Don Gullett.

Everyone else is up for bid.

"That includes Pete Rose and Tony Perez," Tim added.

Sudden Impact
With the JIM pennant races closer than ever, expect many of the recent amateur draft picks to see major league action this season.

"One key player could make the difference between winning and losing," said Texas GM Dan S.

In addition, with the recent ruling that free agency won't be a part of the JIM in the near future, teams are no longer worried about starting the clock on a player's service time too soon.

Oakland is the first team to promote a draft choice. Right-handed pitcher Pat Zachary will join the A's starting rotation after making just three minor league appearances.

Oakland has gone to a five-man rotation to ease the bearded rookie into the fray.

31 Days and Counting
The JIM trade deadline is a mere 31 days away and league GMs have taken note.

"There hasn't been a lot of activity early in the season," said one league GM. "But something tells me it's going to break loose soon."

The New York Yankees have signed outfielder Bobby Mitchell and pitcher Erskine Thomason to minor league contracts.

The San Francisco Giants have signed first baseman/outfielder Matty Alou (pictured below) and infielder Bob Heise minor league contracts.

The Texas Rangers have landed a front-line starting pitcher for their second half pennant push.

Following a disappointing season a year ago, Texas sent three players to Montreal for right-handed starter Rick Reuschel. In return, the Expos received short stop Toby Harrah and pitchers Steve Renko and Stan Wall.

Reuschel was 5-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 15 starts for the Expos. The right-hander was the Most Valuable Player of the 1972 All-Star Game played at Montreal's Jarry Park. The 26-year-old was 17-14 with a 3.44 ERA last season. His career mark is 68-72.

Harrah, 25, was the key to the deal for Montreal. While he was batting just .236 this season, Harrah did have seven home runs and 40 RBIs. He is a former All-Star.

The 30-year-old Renko was 2-3 with a 7.77 ERA in 11 relief appearances. Montreal hopes it can get the right-hander returned to form.

Wall, a 24-year-old left-hander, was 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA at Triple-A Clay City.

The Rangers have also called up pitcher Bill Travers to take Renko's bullpen spot. Veteran Mark Belanger will play short stop until recent draft pick Alfredo Griffin is ready for the job.

Texas is 44-37 this season. The Rangers reside in fifth place in the American League West, yet are just 5.5 games from first place.

The Cleveland Indians have undergone a massive shakeup to their pitching staff.

"It's time for change," understated Tribe GM Rick B.

Four pitchers were released by the team. Cleveland added Sam McDowell, Dean Chance, Dick Ellsworth and Bob Miller to the Joy in Mudville unemployed list.

Moreover, hurlers Tom Buskey and Rich Hand were shipped to Triple-A Charleston

The Erie Warriors then called up Pat Darcy, Steve Dunning, Dave Heaverlo, Mike Stanton to restock the staff. In addition, this year's top draft Tribe draft picks Bruce Sutter and Rick Langford have wound up on the big league roster.

Thus, the new Sons of Geronimo rotation will go five deep. It looks like this:

Sutter, the sixth overall pick in the recent amateur draft, will be thrust into the closer role despite the past success of Steve Mingori, who racked up 43 saves last summer. In fact, Mingori is tied with Cincinnati's Clay Carroll as the all-time JIM leader.

The Indians hold a 34-39 record good for third place in the American League East. Cleveland is 12.5 games behind front-running Baltimore.

Evans on the Block
Always in a mood to deal, San Diego Padre GM Dan S (aka Dealer Dan) has let it slip that right fielder Dwight Evans is on the trade blocking.

What do the Padres want in return?

"We're seeking a quality pitcher," said Dan earlier this week.

Empty Nest in Baltimore
The Baltimore Orioles reportedly attempted to trade up in the recent June amateur draft for a shot at selecting Oregon native Dale Murphy.

Baltimore was thrilled by his raw power and athletic skills that make him a candidate to play a number of positions.

However, both San Francisco and Milwaukee turned down all offers.

In addition, insiders say the Orioles offered "an intriguing package" to Atlanta for the 19-year-old slugger. The Braves, however, reportedly are holding onto the No. 4 overall choice.

Sam McDowell didn't go long without work.

The San Diego Padres claimed the hard-throwing pitcher off waivers Thursday morning less than 24 hours after Cleveland released him.

A former starter, McDowell made 17 relief appearances for the Indians. The 32-year-old was 0-1 with an 8.59 ERA.

San Diego has assigned McDowell to its Triple-A farm club.

The San Diego Padres acquired former Gold Glove winner Ray Fosse in a trade Thursday afternoon.

The Padres sent minor league first baseman John Doherty to the Cleveland Indians in the deal.

The 28-year-old Fosse is a career .246 hitter. He won the Gold Glove Award for American League catchers in 1970. However, Fosse has spent this season in Triple-A after losing his starting job to Barry Foote.

San Diego demoted veteran Fred Kendall to the minors and added Fosse to its major league roster. He is expected to battle Bob Barton for playing time.

Doherty, meanwhile, will be assigned to Cleveland's Triple-A farm team. The 23-year-old first baseman is a one-time minor league all-star. This season, Doherty was batting .383 with the Padres' Double-A farm club.

In related news, San Diego released pitcher Al Santorini and placed Sam McDowell on its roster. McDowell was released by Cleveland yesterday.

Cleveland--The 24th career start of Dennis Eckersley's career produced a number of firsts.

The 20-year-old right-hander threw the first no-hitter of the 1975 season and the first in Cleveland Indians' history. In addition, of the 11 men who have pitched no-hitters in Joy in Mudville League history, Eckersley is the youngest.

Eckersley walked two and struck out eight as the Indians shut out Boston 3-0. The No. 2 overall pick in the 1974 amateur draft needed 115 pitches for his gem.

The final out came on a check-swing comebacker to Eckersley off the bat of Willie Randolph.

Ironically, two of the previous no-hitters were thrown against Cleveland including Rudy May's 1971 perfect game.

Only the American League East in which Baltimore holds a 10.5-game lead over second-place Boston fails to hold drama.

In the AL West, the Chicago White Sox continue to surprise. Winners of 75 games a year ago, the Chisox lead the division by 1.5 games over Kansas City and defending champion Minnesota. Oakland lurks in fourth place, 3.5 back.

In the National League, St. Louis seeks its second division flag in history with a four-game advantage over arch-rival Chicago. While the Cardinals won the East in a tie-breaking playoff in 1971, the Cubs have never finished better than third.

Three-time titlist Houston leads the NL West. However, buoyed by its recent trade for catcher Ray Fosse, the San Diego Padres have strung together seven wins in 10 games to pull to within four games of first place.

Diamond JIM Notes: Texas was dealt a severe blow when All-Star catcher Darrell Porter dislocated his shoulder in a home plate collision July 6 against Minnesota. New York--Shea Stadium will host the sixth annual Joy in Mudville League All-Star Game Tuesday.

Each league will be represented by six players from its defending champion. A half-dozen Baltimore Orioles have been named to the American League roster, and six Houston Astros will suit up for the National League.

Headlining the Oriole All-Stars are pitchers Jon Matlack and Tom Seaver. Added together, the pair has made nine All-Star appearances. In fact, Matlack leads all pitchers with five All-Star selections.

However, Minnesota Twin right-hander Bert Blyleven (14-5, 4.05 ERA) is expected to start for the Americans.

The AL Stars lead the exhibition series three games to two and come in with a two-game winning streak.

The National Leaguers will send veteran right-hander Larry Dierker of Houston to the mound. Dierker, a four-time All-Star, holds a 13-8 record with a 3.17 ERA.

Pittsburgh third baseman Richie Hebner is the all-time JIM leader with six All-Star selections.

After twice making the AL Stars as a member of the Oakland A's, Chicago Cub outfielder Rick Monday will make his first NL appearance.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Joel Horlen will appear in his second All-Star Game. Horlen first made the Mid-Summer Classic in the inaugural 1970 season.

The game will also feature the JIM's top two home runs hitters on the career list. Kansas City first baseman Dick Allen tops the leader board with 166 career round-trippers. New York Met Boog Powell has 157 homers.

New York--The National League pitchers held the American League hitters in check. The Junior Circuit wishes it could have done the same to Ken Griffey.

The Cincinnati Reds' outfielder outhit the entire AL club with an All-Star Game-record 5-for-5 performance as the Nationals prevailed 5-0 at Shea Stadium.

Griffey began the game with a double off AL starter Bert Blyleven of Minnesota. After three singles, the Donora, Pennsylvania native ended his day with a double off Eric Rasmussen of Kansas City.

Griffey easily won the game's Most Valuable Player Award as the NL won for the first time since 1972. The series is now tied at three games each.

In the meantime, Houston right-hander Larry Dierker tossed five shutout innings to earn the victory. Ron Guidry of Atlanta followed with two innings of blanks and then San Diego's Norm Angelini and St. Louis' Al Hrabosky each pitched a shutout inning.

Following a disappointing season a year ago, Texas sent three players to Montreal for right-handed starter Rick Reuschel. In return, the Expos received short stop Toby Harrah and pitchers Steve Renko and Stan Wall. Reuschel was 5-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 15 starts for the Expos. The right-hander was the Most Valuable Player of the 1972 All-Star Game played at Montreal's Jarry Park. The 26-year-old was 17-14 with a 3.44 ERA last season. His career mark is 68-72. Harrah, 25, was the key to the deal for Montreal. While he was batting just .236 this season, Harrah did have seven home runs and 40 RBIs. He is a former All-Star. The 30-year-old Renko was 2-3 with a 7.77 ERA in 11 relief appearances. Montreal hopes it can get the right-hander returned to form. Wall, a 24-year-old left-hander, was 2-1 with a 1.50 ERA at Triple-A Clay City. The Rangers have also called up pitcher Bill Travers to take Renko's bullpen spot. Veteran Mark Belanger will play short stop until recent draft pick Alfredo Griffin is ready for the job. Texas is 44-37 this season. The San Diego Padres claimed the hard-throwing pitcher off waivers Thursday morning less than 24 hours after Cleveland released him. A former starter, McDowell made 17 relief appearances for the Indians. The 32-year-old was 0-1 with an 8.59 ERA. San Diego has assigned McDowell to its Triple-A farm club. The Padres sent minor league first baseman John Doherty to the Cleveland Indians in the deal. The 28-year-old Fosse is a career .246 hitter. He won the Gold Glove Award for American League catchers in 1970. However, Fosse has spent this season in Triple-A after losing his starting job to Barry Foote. San Diego demoted veteran Fred Kendall to the minors and added Fosse to its major league roster. He is expected to battle Bob Barton for playing time. Doherty, meanwhile, will be assigned to Cleveland's Triple-A farm team. The 23-year-old first baseman is a one-time minor league all-star. This season, Doherty was batting .383 with the Padres' Double-A farm club. In related news, San Diego released pitcher Al Santorini and placed Sam McDowell on its roster. The 20-year-old right-hander threw the first no-hitter of the 1975 season and the first in Cleveland Indians' history. In addition, of the 11 men who have pitched no-hitters in Joy in Mudville League history, Eckersley is the youngest. Eckersley walked two and struck out eight as the Indians shut out Boston 3-0. The No. 2 overall pick in the 1974 amateur draft needed 115 pitches for his gem. The final out came on a check-swing comebacker to Eckersley off the bat of Willie Randolph. Ironically, two of the previous no-hitters were thrown against Cleveland including Rudy May's 1971 perfect game. Each league will be represented by six players from its defending champion. A half-dozen Baltimore Orioles have been named to the American League roster, and six Houston Astros will suit up for the National League. The Junior Circuit wishes it could have done the same to Ken Griffey. The Cincinnati Reds' outfielder outhit the entire AL club with an All-Star Game-record 5-for-5 performance as the Nationals prevailed 5-0 at Shea Stadium. Griffey began the game with a double off AL starter Bert Blyleven of Minnesota. After three singles, the Donora, Pennsylvania native ended his day with a double off Eric Rasmussen of Kansas City. Griffey easily won the game's Most Valuable Player Award as the NL won for the first time since 1972. The series is now tied at three games each. In the meantime, Houston right-hander Larry Dierker tossed five shutout innings to earn the victory. Ron Guidry of Atlanta followed with two innings of blanks and then San Diego's Norm Angelini and St. Louis' Al Hrabosky each pitched a shutout inning.
