Holiday Double-Headers!

The Reds signed P Ted Ryther (34-4.3) today and sent him to Hamilton of the International League (A). Whether it is just to warm up before coming to Cincinnati or to stay there as insurance, I am not sure. Several teams worked him out, however, and no one else seemed very interested, so maybe he is washed up.

Manager Paul Richards (47-5.4) has his Gothams in town to begin a 4 game series with a double-header today. We are 6-2 against them on the season, having swept them in 4 games in New York 3 weeks ago. They are 3rd in the League in scoring with 5.0 runs per game (Detroit is 5th with 4.7). They are 4th in runs allowed with 4.8 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.5). They have won their last 6 games.

New York Gothams (26-28 .481 8.5 GB in 4th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (34-19 .642 in 1st place)

Game 1
Jack Roberts, N.Y. (36-6.1) (R 4-4 1.66 8.2-2.1-3.0 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 10-7 2.26 8.6-1.0-2.9)

We have not faced Roberts this season. One of the hottest hitters in the League right now is 3B Ed Glass (28-4.5) and he is 12 for 23 (.522) with 2 home runs against Frazier for his career.

Won - 6 to 1

A 2-out hit in the 9th spoiled the shutout for Frazier.

Frazier allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.

Roberts gave us 11 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2.

We made 4 errors and New York made 5.

3B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) had 2 hits and scored a run. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) had 3 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 2B Pat Dunbar (26-8.3) drew a walk and scored 2 runs and made 2 excellent plays in the field. SS Ed Engelhardt (23-5.0) hit a triple and drew a walk.

For the Gothams, the feared 3B Ed Glass (28-4.5) went 0 for 4 with a strikeout.

Game 2
Tom McDowell, N.Y. (24-8.0) (R 9-8 2.71 8.1-2.4-3.3) vs. Jiggs Niedermeyer, Det. (24-5.8) (R 6-4 2.29 7.5-1.4-3.3)

Won - 2 to 1

For the 2nd time today, a 2-out hit in the 9th spoils our pitcher's shutout. This time, since we only had scored 1 run, it also spoiled our lead. But in the bottom of the 9th, SS Ed Engelhardt rapped a 2-out single of his own to spoil the Gotham's day. He had 2 hits with a double.

Niedermeyer allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 2.

McDowell gave us 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. He also beaned 2 batters.

2B Pat Dunbar hit a triple and scored a run and handled 11 chances in the field without an error.

Liberty League:
Louisville (8) at Cleveland (3) Game 1: Jumbo Hoops (23-6.5) (7-4) over Artie Boucher (25-6.1) (5-13). Hoops allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. 1B Pete Hinde (32-7.9) had 5 hits with a double and a triple, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. RF Tom Panozzo (24-2.0) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. He is also the odds on favorite to win the Gold Glove in right. LF Jack Wallace's (35-7.5) season came to an abrupt end with a ruptured achilles tendon. Maybe it is just as well, as he was batting 8 for 68 (.118).

Louisville (2) at Cleveland (4) Game 2: Willard Clapp (24-4.3) (4-7) over Mert Gross (30-5.8) (0-4). Clapp allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6.

Boston (1) at Indianapolis (4) Game 1: Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (9-12) over Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (8-14). DeVaux allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. He has not lost a game to anyone other than Detroit since May. 1B Ed Slonim (25-8.5) hit his 1st 2 home runs of the season and had 3 RBIs. RF Ed Wakefield (28-5.8) hit his 9th.

Boston (6) at Indianapolis (5) Game 2: Freddy Wood (32-6.3) (3-1) over Levi Giddens (36-4.8) (2-7). LF Charlie Warner (34-9.2) had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (40-4.1) pulled a muscle and will miss a week or two. For the Hoosiers, CF Dave McQueary (25-5.0) hit his 2nd home run of the season.

Cincinnati (1) at Pittsburgh (8): Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (11-9) over Charlie Branham (28-4.2) (10-10). Mathews allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 2. The 2nd game was rained out.

Grand National Association:

Omaha (6) at Kansas City (5) Game 1: Tom Lee (30-6.0) (10-10) over Dan Butler (31-4.7) (3-9). Omaha scored 3 times in the top of the 9th to take the lead. Lee has won 5 in a row. Rookie 1B Tom Durkin (22-6.6) hit his 2nd home run of the year. For the Cowboys, CF Heinie Ashmore (23-6.0) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI.

Omaha (15) at Kansas City (11) Game 2: Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2) (10-6) over Lew Burnett (27-4.5) (10-11). Burnett has lost 4 in a row. 3B Dave Henderson (25-4.1) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. Ex-Wolverine SS Al Shaffer (27-5.6) had 3 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.

Washington (1) at Chicago (3) Game 1: Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (15-10) over Ed Bush (28-5.3) (9-13). Seguin allowed 2 hits, no walks and struck out 6. Bush allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. 3B Henry Potter (34-6.4) will miss 2 to 3 months with a pulled hamstring.

Washington (6) at Chicago (4) Game 2: Sammy Berry (28-5.5) (7-8) over Skyrocket Howard (23-5.4) (1-2). Ex-Wolverine CF Ben Spencer (27-4.2) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI.

Providence (6) at St. Louis (4) Game 1: Ed Hodges (28-3.2) (10-5) over Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (10-7). LF Al Young (24-4.8) hit a bases-loaded triple and scored 2 runs. C Spider Sullivan (27-6.7) pulled a muscle and will miss about 5 weeks. For the Terriers, LF Pat Matthews (25-5.1) had 5 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI.

Providence (9) at St. Louis (13) Game 2: Tom Simmons (26-4.9) (1-0) in his major league debut over Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (14-10). Simmons did not excel in the pitcher's box but did in the batter's box. He had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. For the Grays, 1B Ren Mason (22-6.9) had 3 hits with a home run, stole a base and had 4 RBIs.

Brooklyn (4) at Milwaukee (5): Dave Ward (23-6.1) (4-3) over Al Green (25-3.8) (9-15). The Brewers scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th to win. 3B Dave Gray (27-4.9) hit a 2-out double to end the game. Ward allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. RF Ed Capps (25-6.1) hit his 4th home run of the season. The 2nd game was rained out.

Elsewhere:
Down in the Central League (B), there were 2 no-hitters! Ed Collins (28-7.7) of the Binghamton Crickets no-hit the Jersey City Skeeters in a 5 to 0 win. He did not walk a batter and struck out 7. Only 1 batter reached base and that was on an error by the third baseman. He improved his record to 10-5 with a 2.18 ERA. Jake Cole (23-5.4) of the Wilkes-Barre Barons no-hit the Newark Trunkmakers in a 3 to 0 win. He walked 5 and struck out 5. He is now 10-9 with a 2.33 ERA.

Pop should better look into buying a plough, because he won't make money in baseball for much longer.

2B Reddy Daley (24-6.8) has been hot in Syracuse and 2B Pat Dunbar (26-8.3) has cooled of late, so I have called up Daley and sent IF Al Hartford (23-5.0) back down. Daley was our 1st pick in the B Leagues draft this Winter and he is already 24, so I don't want to waste any more time with him. Let's see what he can do.

Cincinnati Reds (26-31 .456 11 GB tied for 6th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (37-20 .649 in 1st place)

John Stevens, Cin. (31-8.2) (R 10-13 2.62 8.8-1.6-3.7 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 18-6 2.13 7.6-0.9-5.3)

We are 2-0 against Stevens on the year, but he has pitched well both time. We only had 5 hits the last time we met.

Lost - 3 to 1

Daley had a forgettable debut: 0 for 3 with a strikeout and he made an error. He did make two exceptional plays in the field, however.

Rice allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4.

Stevens gave us 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits and an RBI.

Manager Elmer Higgins (42-6.4) has his Bourbons in town to begin a 3 game series today. We are 3-3 against them this season and took 2 of 3 from them in Louisville back at Decoration Day the last time we met. They are dead last in scoring with 4.2 runs per game (Detroit is 4th with 4.7). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 4.6 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.4).

Louisville Bourbons (26-31 .456 11 GB tied for 5th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (38-21 .644 in 1st place)

We have not faced Gross this season.

Won - 7 to 6 in 12 innings

Niedermeyer was horrible, but our defense picked him up just enough to get us by. He is now on a train to Syracuse to get himself rehabilitated and Ed Price (24-5.7) will get another chance to show what he can do. Each team scored twice in the 10th inning. 3B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) finally ended the game with a 1-out single in the bottom of the 12th.

In 10 innings, Niedermeyer allowed 18 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI.
In 2 innings, Al Rice (23-7.6) only allowed a walk and picked up the win.

Who were the idiots that decided to play a double-header on Friday the 13th? Well, I guess I was one of them, but I did not realize what I was doing! Really, though, I am not too superstitious. But it does give me a little uneasy feeling.

Louisville Bourbons (26-32 .448 12 GB in 6th place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (39-21 .650 in 1st place)

Game 1
William McLeod, Lou. (29-5.6) (R 12-11 1.92 7.5-3.0-4.6 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (24-5.8) (R 19-7 2.11 7.5-0.9-5.3)

We are 2-0 against McLeod so far, winning both games by the score of 6 to 4, though one of them took 10 innings.

Won - 8 to 7

CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) hit a 1-out triple in the bottom of the 9th and scored on a wild pitch to win the game. He has been out MVP so far this year and he did not start the season in the lineup.

Rice allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

McLeod gave us 8 hits, 6 walks and struck out 1.

We made 4 errors and Louisville made 5.

CF Ren Dunbar had 3 hits with a triple and a walk, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) had a hit and 2 walks, stole a base and scored a run. C Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) hit an inside-the-park home run, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.

For the Bourbons, rookie 2B Tom Walker (25-3.8) had 3 hits with a triple and a walk, stole 2 bases, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs.

Game 2
Cupid Tyson , Lou. (24-8.6) (R 1-1 4.76 9.5-4.0-1.6) vs. Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 12-7 2.26 8.5-1.1-3.1)

We have not faced Tyson before. He was traded by Boston to Milwaukee and then Milwaukee released him.

Won - 3 to 2

Our 3rd straight Sudden Death win! 3B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) hit a single to win the game in the bottom of the 9th. Frazier only went 1 inning and had to leave with a tight back. They say it will probably be 2 weeks before he is right, so I am going to give Cinders Holmes (22-5.1) a shot. He has been hot in Syracuse. Then if either, Price or Holmes falters, Wild Bill Perrell (24-7.3) will get the call. He pitched very well for us early in the season, but Price and Holmes have out-performed him of late in Syracuse.

Frazier pitched a perfect 1st.
In 8 innings of relief, Price allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and had an RBI.

Tyson gave us 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1.

We made 2 errors and Louisville made 3.

SS Pat Dunbar (26-8.3) had 2 hits with a double and stole a base. 2B Reddy Daley (24-6.8) had 3 hits with a double and scored 2 runs. Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) had a pinch-hit single and scored the wining run.

Liberty League:
Boston (0) at Pittsburgh (7) Game 1: Tom Lilly (28-6.4) (17-8) over William Little (27-6.0) (14-11). Lilly allowed 4 hits, 4 walks and struck out 4. SS Jim Ware (34-5.6) had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Boston (2) at Pittsburgh (4) Game 2: Joe Peters (32-4.9) (5-5) over Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (9-16). Peters, in his 1st win over his old team, allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 6.

New York (2) at Indianapolis (4): Jimmy Euler (27-5.5) (11-3) over Miah Turner (27-5.3) (13-10). Euler allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Turner allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.

Cincinnati (7) at Cleveland (2): Charlie Branham (28-4.2) (12-11) over Willard Clapp (26-4.3) (4-9). Branham allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 3. For the Spiders, rookie 2B Zachary Pfeiffer (20-4.5) had 3 hits with a double and a triple and scored 2 runs.

Grand National Association:
Brooklyn (9) at Kansas City (0): Al Green (25-3.8) (12-15) over Piggy Lambert (24-8.2) (5-8). Green allowed 5 hits, 5 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. Rookie CF Ferdie Brady (22-5.6) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI.

Providence (5) at Chicago (3) in 10 innings: Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (15-12) over Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (17-11). In 10 innings, Ashton allowed 9 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5.

Washington (2) at St. Louis (4): Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (11-9) over Ed Bush (28-5.3) (9-16). Richards allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Bush allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 4.

Omaha (11) at Milwaukee (4): Lee Sprague (28-3.5) (15-3) over Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (15-11). SS Al Shaffer (27-5.6) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. For the Brewers, Buchanan hit a home run, LF Ted Steeves (26-4.2) hit his 2nd and 3B Dave Gray (27-4.9) hit his 3rd.

Owner Joe Watson (55-6.2) of Washington fired manager Harry Lashley (46-5.5) last night and announced this morning that Pete Tebo (44-7.2) would be the new manager. Tebo has never managed in the majors before. He led Mobile of the Southern League (B) to a 6th place finish last season. He was a decent hitting second baseman who last played in the B Leagues in 1880.

Manager/1B Pete Bucolo (40-4.1) has his Shamrocks in town and we will begin what will now only be a 2 game series today (if the weather holds out). We are 4-3 against them on the season and split 4 games in Boston a little over a month ago the last time we met. They are in their customary position leading the League in runs scored (though their park has as much to do with it this season as their hitters) with 5.4 runs per game (Detroit is 4th with 4.8). They are dead last in runs allowed (thanks again to the South End Grounds) with 5.5 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.5).

Boston Shamrocks (34-32 .515 9 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at
Detroit Wolverines (41-21 .661 in 1st place)

William Little, Bos. (27-6.0) (R 14-11 2.81 9.9-1.9-5.0 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 20-7 2.14 7.6-1.0-5.3)

We are 2-1 against Little so far.

Lost - 8 to 7

Rice sat down the 1st 14 Shamrocks to come to the plate and through 6 innings had only allowed 1 base runner. But in the 7th, he suddenly could not get anyone out and gave up 7 runs in the inning. After we fought our way back into a tie, Rice, who averages only 1 walk per game, walked 2 in the 9th inning and then gave up a hit to P Little that scored the go-ahead run.

Rice allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had 2 hits and scored a run.

Little gave us 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had 2 RBIs.

Each team made 3 errors.

3B Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) had 2 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) had 2 hits with a double and a walk and scored a run. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) had 3 hits, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. He made a crucial error, however. He still has good range and looks very fluid in the field, but has become an error machine. He leads the League in errors by a good margin. Editor's Note: Though he is 3rd in both Zone Rating and Def. Eff. I'll tell you who has gone cold as ice is RF Ben Smith (28-6.7). He was 0 for 5 and is 1 for his last 22 and is hitting .136 for July. Since he was leading the League in batting in April, he is hitting .217, a span of 2.5 months. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1), who had also been very cold of late, hit a double and his 4th home run of the season and had 2 RBIs. SS Pat Dunbar (28-8.3) can take some of the blame for this loss with his 0 for 5 day and 2 errors.

For the Shamrocks, CF Studs Galloway (24-5.1) hit his 4th home run of the year, the 1st that has left the playing field. LF Jocko Breton (25-4.5) had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.
