What a disappointing finish to such a brilliant start! Looks like the wheels started coming off from September 1 and didnt really stop until cratering in the Series sweep. I thought that Dad was on his way to perhaps one of his greatest seasons, but this may have been the least convincing POY of his career. That end-of-season swoon, 3-7 with a no-decision and an ERA ballooning by over half a run per 9 innings indicates either the byproduct of over-use or the beginnings of the onset of career decline. Or, hopefully, just a glitch in the machinery caused by anxiety over the worsening world condition and worries about his 5-year old daughters future.
Or perhaps, rumors began floating around the clubhouse of a potential ownership change, something murky and indistinct about something called The Ankhiel Group, and made even more unsettling due to the gathering darkness in Europe. Or, more likely, it was a couple of bad Nathans dogs.

Some interesting notes:
With a 78-76 season, the Red Sox had only their 8th winning season in 40 years! They have never had 2 consecutive winning seasons! With an impressive 2nd half, the Cardinals and manager Tim Lopresto snapped a 10-year losing streak. |

Meanwhile, the recent dominance of Brooklyn and Chicago has moved them up the list... They, along with the Phillies and Cardinals, have had the best stretches in NL history... The Braves improved from once being a laughing stock, while the Reds continue to be surprisingly consistent over time, despite being the only franchise to have never won a WS... The Giants and Pirates each had their day in the sun, but they have had many more lean years and it shows. |

Wow...after looking at the web pages, I noticed that my Uncle Em (Emil Pelto) has been traded TWICE already, and he's only 20!
The Athletics traded him to Cleveland (the team that was interested in signing the "real" Em Pelto) in 1939, and in 1940, the Indians traded him to the Phillies. I hope he likes Philadelphia. ![]() Em did have a decent year at AAA, so perhaps he's about ready to make a splash at the major league level. The Phillies seem to have pretty good players ahead of him, both at first and behind the plate, but they're both in their early 30s. The Phils also got another hotshot first base prospect from the Indians, a guy named Lonny Arendale. Arendale was the #7 overall pick in the 1939 draft, and he's a 4.5 star prospect, to Em's 3.0, but he's also 2 years older. Maybe the Phillies organization will have some patience with Em. ![]() Thanks for a project that's lots of fun to follow!

Key Retirees:
Tyrell Chestnut, RF Boston Red Sox 1922-40 Chestnut was beloved in Boston, where he played his entire 19-year career with the Red Sox despite never winning a pennant. He was the first great example of a player who could hit for power and steal bases, twice leading the AL in HR and once in SB. He was the 1922 ROY and went on to win 4 BOY's. He won 5 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1927-31 and added another in 1936. He had an incredible 1930 season when he set an AL record with 36 homeruns and a major league record with 155 RBI. His 36 HR has never been broken in the AL, but it has been tied once. His 155 RBI are still an AL record, although they were surpassed by 1 RBI in the NL. Chestnut retired with a .309 average, 2801 hits, 514 doubles (15th All-Time), 267 homeruns (7th All-Time), 1630 RBI (7th All-Time), 1720 runs scored (3rd All-Time), 1336 walks (10th All-Time) and 533 stolen bases (16th All-Time). Roy "The Natural" Hobbs, CF Boston Braves 1920-40 Roy Hobbs earned the nickname "The Natural" because he stepped on a major league field at age 18 and proved he was ready for The Show. He was a great player who helped propel the Braves to some of the best seasons in franchise history, including a record 105 wins in 1928. He went to two World Series, winning one. He retired with a .315 average, 2992 hits (16th All-Time), 442 doubles, 221 homeruns (18th All-Time), 1660 RBI (5th All-Time), 1585 runs scored (13th All-Time), 1209 walks (17th All-Time) and 206 steals. Jon Minzey, CF St. Louis Cardinals, 1920-29 Washington Senators 1929-34 Brooklyn Dodgers 1934-40 Cincinnati Reds 1940 Minzey was an unsung star and a winner wherever he went. He played multiple seasons for three teams. He was part of the Cardinals' last championships, winning two pennants and one World Series there. After being traded to Washington, he helped turn that team into a competitor. Then in Brooklyn, he was part of three pennant winners and took home his second World Championship. He won 4 straight Gold Gloves from 1930-33 and retired with a .316 average, 2988 hits (17th All-Time), 430 doubles, 1098 RBI, 1568 runs scored (14th All-Time), 710 walks and 364 stolen bases. Troy Kinnear, 3B Detroit Tigers 1921-37 Philadelphia Phillies 1937-40 Kinnear became Detroit's everyday third baseman in 1924, clubbing 14 homeruns. By 1927 when he led the AL with 22, he had become part of the most feared lineup in the AL. In 1928, he and the Tigers won their only World Series. In 1937, he was traded to the Phillies for their aging star pitcher Scott Fenner. In Philadelphia, he helped revive the team's sagging offense, providing an immediate boost by winning POTM in his first month there. He won 2 Gold Gloves and retired with a .272 average, 2412 hits, 602 doubles (5th All-Time), 332 homeruns (4th All-Time), 1595 RBI (11th All-Time), 1423 runs scored and 933 walks. At the time of his retirement, he was one of only 4 players to have reached the lofty plateau of 300 career homeruns. Other Notable Retirees: Adam Sommer, LF Chicago White Sox 1924-40 St. Louis Browns 1940 .321, 1966 H, 321 2B, 83 HR, 893 RBI, 833 R Sommer was never expected to become a regular player in the majors, but he worked very hard and at age 24, he became part of the White Sox lineup, hitting .330 with 82 RBI. The next year, he missed a lot of time due to injury, but he managed to hit an incredible .410 in 354 AB. He went on to post an exceptional career average of .321 and play in two World Series for Chicago. |

Retiring Ancestors:
Levi "Tyke" Walls, SS Chicago Cubs 1921-30 Philadelphia A's 1930-31 New York Giants 1931-40 St. Louis Browns 1940 Tyke burst onto the scene as a 23-year-old in 1921, winning the ROY by hitting .334 with 81 RBI and 31 steals. Two years later, he set two still-standing major league records with a .445 average and 239 hits, winning NL BOY. He was traded to the A's in 1930 and to the Giants in 1931, but he never tased the postseason with any of his teams. Late in his career, he won two Gold Gloves, and he retired with a .337 average (17th All-Time), 3333 hits (4th All-Time), 367 doubles, 1193 RBI, 1625 runs scored (10th All-Time), 858 walks and 678 steals. |

Hey Matt,
This league you have created is simply amazing. I can't believe I actually remained interested after Whiskey Sr. retired, but I have. It's truly a testament to you abilities to bring the league to life through a forum, and through the participants who fill in bakcstories. Now, enough praise, although all deserved. Are there any GM spots still available? I'd love to own a team in this league. I'll take any, but I would prefer the Phillies, A's, or White Sox. Hopefully my grandpa will appear in 1941, right schedule, but hopefully not drafted in '42... |

Matt, do you want to know the actual dates our ancestors fought in the war? Like, my grandfather served from September '42 to March '43, before being sent home. His wife had a kid (my uncle) and he requested to be sent home to work for other war-related activities so he could be with his family. They let him go. He was a ship-builder fora year after that, before going back to being a butcher. So I don't see how he should miss service in baseball in 44 and 45. I guess it makes sense for all of us to tell our ancestors stories in the war.

I assume you're talking about Morris Lutzke who joins the league in 1942? If so, I'll note the dates above & make sure that's when he serves, returning in '44. |
