MY LIFE IN 1953
EC's Full of Glee in '53 Hi-Ho, guys and gals... it's the very, very merry month of May and EC needs to check the stacks of wax to see what the whole wide USA is listening to on the radio... the last I remember Patti Page, the Singing Rage, was #1 with that silly, little ditty with a very catchy tune "The Doggie in the Window"... it held the top spot on the Billboard Pop Chart for 8 weeks until May 16... taking Patti's place was Percy Faith and his Orchestra with an absolutely gorgeous song, "The Song From Moulin Rouge"... not only will you hear Percy's great orchestra, but you'll also hear a wonderful vocal by Felicia Sanders, too. Just sit back on the veranda, relax, sip on an ice cold RC Cola, listen and enjoy it... it is sho 'nuff good as we say on the sunny south side of the ever lovin' Mason-Dixon Line, you all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ-7t1N4XVo Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-07-2020 at 04:27 PM. |

Monday, June 1, 1953 YANKS FEND OFF EAGLES FOR 1ST PLACE Yesterday afternoon Wafford went to New Yerby with the high hopes of first place in the North Island Recreational League First Division... however, the Eagles had their wings clipped and they were brought down to earth in stunning fashion by the Yankees 12-0... New Yerby now has a two-game lead over Wafford, Stockdale and Joliet... the Green Giants tripped up the Jackson Jackalopes 7-2... and last place Dutton trimmed the Stockdale Mustangs 6-4. Monday, June 1, 1953 LAST PLACE AVALON UPSETS FIRST PLACE THEODORE IN NIRL 2ND You know what makes baseball more unique than other major sports?... the worst team can beat the best team on any given day in a single game... and occasionally they will win two games out of three in a series... or even sweep a series... don't happen very often in the NFL or the NBA... but it happened this weekend in the North Island Recreational League Second Division... basement dweller Avalon put on their hitting shoes and outscored the first-place team, the Theodore Bobcats, 12-9... this enabled the Union Heights Hackers to tie Theodore for the top spot with a 6-0 shutout victory over the Kinston Firebirds... in the other matchup West Chester whipped the Kofa Kings 4-1. Monday, June 1, 1953 SIFL LEADERS FALL, CUBS AND SAINTS STILL TIED Is it the beginning of a June swoon or is it just the game of baseball?... probably just baseball... SIFL co-leaders, Guedon and St. Dominic, got upset yesterday afternoon... third place Claiborne rallied in the eighth and whipped the Saints 8-7...the Cards are now just two games ouf of first place... and the Gators were trimmed 7-5 by the last place Des Allemands Eagles... last year's champion, the Labadieville Pelicans, got back into the race by torching the fast-fading Opelousas Lions 8-1... there are 6 games left on the schedule... with the recent resurgence of Claiborne and Labadieville, it looks like a fight to the finish between four or five clubs. Tuesday, June 2, 1953 PELS LOSE TOUHY TO INJURY The Labadieville Pelicans of the South Island First League were told by the team doctor that valuable right fielder A. J. Touhy would miss about 5 weeks of play due to a wrist injury he suffered in Sunday's game against Opelousas... Touhy was hit by a pitch. A Gold Glove outfielder, Touhy is one of the Pelicans' leading players... he is batting .308 this season in 14 games with 29 hits, 9 runs scored and 4 ribbies... he has also stolen 10 bases from the leadoff spot. Outfielder Bobby Landry will be added to the roster...he will contend with Emile Robert for Touhy's spot in the lineup. Last edited by Eugene Church; 08-11-2020 at 08:03 PM. |
