Boxing South Africa Championship

BSA Title Fight - Richards Bay, South Africa

[Champion] Mike I. Williams, South Africa, 17-1-0 (16) vs BSA#1 Ewart Potgieter, South Africa, 10-2-0 (10)

A give and take fight in the first three rounds, giving the fans here plenty of action and entertainment. The champ drops Potgieter in the fourth. Potgieter comes back and floors the champion in the fifth round. Both men are tired and Williams lands a beautiful body shot that puts the challenger down again in the 8th. Potgieter survives the 8th but is still wobbly. Williams continues the assault from the last round and Potgieter definitely hasnt recovered. The ref steps in and stops the fight as the challenger is unable to respond to Williams continued aggressiveness.

Winner: Williams
Result: (TKO9)
Cards: 75-74, on all three cards in favor of Williams
Punch stats: 184-480, 38.3% Potgieter - 252-471, 53.5% Williams

ICBA Title Fight - Crowne Plaza, Terrigal, NSW, Australia

[Champion] Larry Foley, Australia, 15-0-1 (9) vs ICBA#1 Ike Ibeabuchi, Nigeria, 22-6-0 (19)

Ibeabuchi has been anxiously waiting for another title opportunity and gets his chance to win back the ICBA belt. Ibeabuchi is 8-4-0 (7), 1KO, 6TKO in title fights, having previously defended the ICBA championship for six straight fights before losing the title to Foley. Foley is eager to prove that the first fight wasnt a fluke and is looking to move up higher in the world rankings. The President opens up well in the first round but Foley responds and takes the 2nd, hurting Ike with some nice body shots followed by a big uppercut. A big 3rd round, 19-2, for the champion. The 4th is just as good for Foley, 22-6, as Ike is having problems with his defense. Foley again in the 5th, 20-3. Ibeabuchi lands some big shots in the 7th and has Foley hurt, 18-3. Ibeabuchi is cut in the 8th, but has another big round, 24-5, hurting the champion again. Both fighters take the 9th round off and get a little rest. Foley has a strong 10th. Ibeabuchi has been landing some big punches in the latter rounds but seems to be getting fatigued. An overhand right puts Ibeabuchi down in the 14th. Foley seems to have a nice lead as we go to the cards but it looks like the 14th round knockdown was the difference in the fight. Foley is moving towards a world title shot while Ibeabuchi may be slipping out of contender status.

Winner: Foley
Result: (UD15)
Cards: 143-141, on all three cards in favor of Foley.
Punch stats: 269-1049, 25.6% Ibeabuchi - 377-717, 52.6% Foley

World Boxing Association Championship

WBA Title Fight -MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV, USA

[Champion] Mike Tyson, USA, 21-2-1 (20) vs [1/5] Muhammad Ali, USA, 21-4-0 (17)

Tyson is 9-1-1 (9), 4KO, 5TKO in title fights. Ali is 3-4-0 (2), 0KO, 2TKO in title fights. Tyson had 7 title defenses of his WBC belt before being upset by Larry Holmes. Both fighters are in great shape as we get ready for a super fight of the ages. The one common opponent is Chuck "No Doubt" Norton. Ali Loss (KO14), Tyson Win ((KO1). Ali lands the first punch of the fight and makes the first statement, 16-2, in the 1st round. Tyson has already developed some swelling around the left eye. Tyson bolts out of his corner for the 2nd and lands punch after punch without much response, 16-1. A real close 3rd, 13-12 Ali, as Ali develops some swelling around his right eye. It looks like Ali is targeting that left eye of Tyson as he peppers the jab all round, 29-3. Another exciting round, 10-10, as Tyson lands a hard hook that might have hurt Ali a bit in the 5th. Tyson, 12-5, in the 6th. All Ali, 24-2, all round in the 7th. Both fighters corners are continuing to work on the swelling. I would hate to see such a great fight stopped by a cut or swelling. Ali, 15-4, in the 8th. Tyson traps Ali in the corner and goes to work, 23-8, in the 9th. Ali has developed swelling around the left eye also, as he's ahead in the 10th, 9-6. Ali gets on his bike and sticks the left jab all round, 14-7, in the 11th. A great round here in the 12th, 15-12 in favor of Tyson, as Ali continues to circle to his right to stay away from Tyson's right hand. Referee Sita takes a point away from Tyson for his repeated holding behind Ali's neck. Tough time to lose a point this late in a championship fight. Ali, 14-7, in the 13th. Tyson's swelling is looking bad. Tyson, 6-0, in the 14th. We go to the last round. 7-3, for Ali in the 15th. We will go to the cards.

Winner: Ali
Result: (UD15)
Cards: 144-140, 143-141, 144-140, all three cards in favor of Ali
Punch stats: 213-1005, 21.2% Tyson - 425-780, 54.5% Ali

Unification bout ahead in late 1955...

There have been rumors that the camps of WBO Champion, Joe Louis, and WBC Champion, Chuck "No Doubt" Norton have been discussing a possible unification bout at the end of 1955. Of course, both fighters would have to win their required mandatory defenses for this fight to happen. This would be a much anticipated superfight. Norton has only one defeat to Mike Tyson and Louis' only defeat came to Norton in the 2nd professional bout of each fighters career. Let's all hold our breath that each fighter can successfully defend his title so that this bout can take place.

EBU gains two prominent fighters...

Two former American fighters have decided to fight under different flags to honor their parents and nationalities. Rocky Marciano will now fight under the Italian flag and Billy Conn will fight under the flag of Ireland.

Arguello impressive in return to ring...

Alexis Arguello, Nicaragua, 5-1-0 (5) vs George Old Chocolate Godfrey, Canada, 6-1-0 (6)

Fort Garry Place, Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada. Arguello traps Godfrey in the corner and lands a right cross that puts Old Chocolate down here in the first round. Godfrey survives the round but looks like a weeble-wobble toy as he makes it back to his corner for the minute rest. Arguello realizes that one minute wasnt enough to recover and goes in for the kill. Arguello is scoring consistently with no answer from Godfrey and Godfrey hits the deck again at the end of the 2nd. The count gets to ten and Arguello returns to the win column with an impressive KO victory in a hostile environment.

Winner: Arguello
Result: (KO2)
Cards: 10-8, on all three cards in favor of Arguello
Punch stats: 18-18, 100% Godfrey - 91-269, 33.8% Arguello

Honeyghan has impressive victory in U.S.,...

[71] Lloyd Honeyghan, UK, 11-3-0 (9) vs [86] Ezra Sellers, USA, 11-3-0 (10)

Showboat Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV, USA. Honeyghan does some nice bodywork and wins the 1st round, 22-6. Sellers is having trouble with Honeyghan's quickness and hand speed, 21-3, in favor of Honeyghan in the 2nd. 25-6, Honeyghan in the 3rd. Sellers finally shows some life in the 6th, after Honeyghan takes the 4th and 5th. Sellers traps Honeyghan against the ropes and has his best round, 15-5, in the 9th. A solid cross puts Sellers down at the end of the 10th. Sellers is still dazed in the 11th and walks into a right hand that sends him down again, 25-0, Honeyghan in the 11th. Sellers is down twice in the 14th, from a clean left hook and a well delivered punch after circling right, away from Sellers. Sellers makes it to the last round but the ref stops the fight due to the severity of Seller's cuts at the 0:21 mark of the 15th.

Winner: Honeyghan
Result: (TKO15)(Cuts)
Cards: 137-123, 138-123, 140-121, all in favor of Honeyghan

Amid promotional concerns, Rampage shines in victory over Grant...

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, USA, 10-3-0 (9) vs Michael Grant, USA, 14-1-0 (13)

Adams Mark Hotel, Philadelphia, PA, USA. Rampage gets off to a quick start in the first round, 17-3. A relatively even round with Grant scoring with a big left and Jackson using his left jab for most of the 2nd. Jackson lands a big right hook followed by a vicious left uppercut that send Grant sprawling to the canvas, 22-10, in the 3rd. 16-8, Jackson in the 4th. The 5th is by far the best round. Jackson lands 17-0, then Grant lands 15-0, and the round finishes 25-19 in favor of Jackson as the crowd goes wild. Another great round in the 6th as both fighters develop swelling around their left eyes, with Grant having the worst of it.
