Thanks for the photos of World War Two Era Phillie, Barney Mussill who just turned 93, is the 5th oldest living Phillie, and is among the 30 oldest living major leaguers. Also thanks for the photos of 1920s Phillie, Ray Steineder (both on page 846). I have yet to find an acceptable quality photo of one of Steineder''s 1924 Phillies teammates, pitcher Jim Bishop. Does anyone one have a good image of Bishop?

Hi!

I downloaded the facepack files a few days ago. A superb job that took a lot of reseach and time.

As I was looking at a few faces, two questions arose:

Do you have a preference for color pictures instead of b/w when available?
Do you prefer photos with the player wearing a MLB team cap instead of none? For example Chris Nabholz is shown wearing no cap.

Your answers will help me for future posts. Thanks!

Thanks for checking in, Expos. My criteria for Facepack image selection is spelled out in several earlier posts. You can find a general overview in my answer to a similar question posted by trauty earlier this year.

I have a ranking of the five criteria I use when deciding which image to use in the Facepack:

1. Visibility/identifiability
2. Image resolution
3. Major League uniform
4. Color image
5. Baseball uniform

(#1.5 would be playing career vs. post-playing image)

I put together some examples of my selection process in the four posts beginning here.

As far as b&w vs. color (assuming modern era here), I really don't have a strong opinion. Clarity is king for me, with color falling far down my personal priority list. Some Facepack users have very strong feelings about it, however, so all else being equal (1-3 above) I often lean toward color. There are also strong feelings among Facepack users about b&w vs. colorized images. I try to strike a balance between b&w and colorized images for earlier players.

Hopefully that gives you and anyone else who's interested an idea of what I look at when I'm managing Facepack updates. With regard to the capped vs. uncapped question, I really don't have strong feelings either way. As with the color vs. b&w issue I mentioned above, some Facepack users have very strong feelings about hatless images, so I try to minimize their use and will occasionally "upgrade" an otherwise acceptable (to me) hatless image to one with a hat. In the case of Nabholz, I'm really not happy with the image identifiability in the Facepack image (below, left). It's too dark for my taste. I much prefer the one below right, which I've used to update the Facepack.
