Gans retains title

May 12, 1911

Joe Gans (CH) (35-4-3) was saved by the referee and scored a Tech UD9 over Ted Lewis (12/14) (15-2)(pre) for his 3rd defense of the WBA title. The WBC nor Lewis's CBU title were on the line in this fight.

After splitting the first two rounds, Gans started taking over the fight in the 3rd. Gans was bleeding over his right eye from an accidental head butt in the 2nd. He knocked Lewis down in the 4th and had won every round going into round #9.

Lewis came out strong in the 9th and dropped the champ in the middle of the round. Lewis was pummeling Gans on the ropes when the ref stepped in. Lewis celebrated like the fight was over. But the ref signaled time out and took Gans over to the ring doctor who stopped the fight because of the cut over Gans' right eye.

Going to the cards everyone knew Gans had won. Lewis left the ring disgusted before they even read the cards.

I had it 79-72 as did (RE) Steve McCarthy. The official judges had it 79-73/80-72/79-72. When the fight was stopped the points were 34-9 Lewis in the round, initially I thought it was stopped for a TKO.

On the undercard

BW - Hugh McGovern (27/21) (11-6-6) KO8 Tommy Doherty (57/60) (12-12-1) (doherty at pre)

HW - Jack Lester (39/35) (17-2-1) TKO8 Bill Farnam (87/100) (17-19-1) (lester at pre)

HW - Dominic McCaffrey (6/5) (33-11-3) UD10 Jimmy Burns (UR/81) (11-4) (burns at pre)

MW - Charley Johnson (club) (10-14-2) UD8 George Brown (UR) (9-2) (Brown at pre in this club fight ... Brown has lost 2 in a row after a 9-0 start)

HW - Jem Roche (UR) (4-6-3) MD8 Dick Rice (UR) (6-3) (both at pre in this club fight)

Ouch, Lewis got screwed I can see why he would leave the ring in anger. Gans has to be the luckiest cat around to be able to pull off a win like that. We need a rematch between the two at some point.

I was thinking about ordering one but Lewis is still at preprime and I don't want to hurt his record too bad .. need to go back and edit that post to show him pre-prime.

It was a back and forth fight until the 9th. Sieger was holding his own splitting rounds. Chambers dropped him with a minute left in the 9th, then the ref stopped it two knockdowns and :47 seconds later.
