Frank Smith and Jethro Lee, two of the best pitchers of this era, each threw 3 perfect innings to start this game. In the top of the 5th, pinch hitter Al Arsenault hit a 3-run homerun off Abraham Dickens to give the AL a 3-0 lead. A Dale Lamberty RBI double made the score 3-1 in the bottom of that inning, and the NL tied the game at 3-3 in the 6th with two singles, a double, a walk, a sac bunt and an RBI ground out. In the top of the 8th, reliever Jesse Janetzky allowed 4 runs on 3 walks, 2 singles and a wild pitch. Dave Arkless led off the bottom of the 9th with a triple and later scored on an error, but that was all the NL could muster in yet another all-star game loss. Code:

Yeah.. William Skjerly has lost A LOT of talent. He'll never see the majors again unless he improves. Too bad.
#2 Overall - Easy Out Skjerly, SP, St. Louis Browns 7.46 in 19 MLB starts in his *career*. OUCH! He is currently in AA, after starting in AAA this year. His talents were actually the same at the start of the season, he's just lost it now. I think he's more worried about what's going on in the world. He will definitely fight in the upcoming war, and die a great death killing an impressive 500 people!!!! |

Frank Smith with a 1.77 ERA...thats just sick.
But what is wrong with the Brooklyn front office? How many years have they gone without adding solid depth behind the two best players active? They need some supporting cast with them.... Its sad really.... such wasted potential. |

The ones time Ditty led the league in RBI (1922), he also won his 3rd (of five) HR titles and was second in the league in BA.I'm sure I'm overlooking someone else... > and I'm about 95% sure we've never had a pitcher's > TC either. I'll have to check. The Usual Suspect for all things pitching: Andrew Murphy: 1913 ERA - 1.63 - 1st Wins - 28 - 1st K's - 184 - 1st 1919 ERA - 1.31 - 1st Wins - 30 - 1st K's - 171 - 1st He was 1-1-2 in 1916 and 1920, and 1-2-1 in 1915 and 1921. Jethro Lee is the obvious one to look at given all his K's. Jethro Lee 1931 ERA - 2.14 - 1st Wins - 27 - 1st K's - 169 - 1st 1936 ERA - 2.62 - 1st Wins - 26 - 1st K's - 205 - 1st Six ERA Titles and 10 K Titles... and those are his only two Win Titles. He's been 2nd in it four times and has a trio of 3rds, so he's been in the running several times. Cecil Tan had a 1-2-1 year (winning 31 games yet still a runner-up) and a 2-1-1 season. Wickersham was 2nd in Wins in 1934 while winning the other titles. The biggest kick in the pants is that the Nolan Ryan of TWB never lead the league in K's. What was I saying about him being overrated? ![]() There may be some others. I took a look at *most* of the Top 25 in Wins, and *eyeballed* the names on K's list to see if anyone jumped out at me as worth looking at. Hardly exhaustive, but didn't want to bog down on it too much. John [edit - correcting Jethro's name] Last edited by jdw; 07-16-2004 at 07:54 PM. |

August 1940
The Yankees continued to play mediocre ball, going 15-14 this month. Washington went 18-11 and gained 3 games in the standings. Unfortunately, pitcher Bill Finley was lost for the rest of the regular season with a pulled muscle in his throwing arm. Outfielder Wolter Tjeenk-Willink may also miss the rest of the regular season with a foot injury. Boston went 17-12 and moved into a tie for 3rd. This should be the first time in 6 years that they finished higher than 7th. Brooklyn went 16-12 and pulled into first place. However, they lost two pitchers to injury. Remmy Paul will miss another 3 weeks with an arm strain, and Dazzy Pope is out for the rest of the season with an elbow fracture. The Cubs went 14-16 and fell 2 games back of the Dodgers. Chicago also lost outfielder Dewey Mickelsen until mid-September with a knee fracture. The Cardinals are making a late push by going 20-9 in August, which leaves them just 7 games back. Cincinnati second baseman Pee Wee Osborne put together a 31-game hit streak, which was the longest in team history and just 7 games short of setting a new major league record. American League-Pitcher of the Month: William O'Neill (CLE)! He had a record of 5-1 in 6 games started, with an ERA of 2.04 and 1 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Howard Sheridan (BOS)! He batted .388 in 103 AB, with 9 homers and 26 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Anthony "Punchy" Cote (CHN)! He had a record of 5-2 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.71 and 2 shutouts. National League-Batter of the Month: Jonny Perly (BKN)! He batted .431 in 102 AB, with 6 homers and 21 RBI. Code:

September 1940
The Yankees dropped 3-of-5 games to the Senators this month, but that was not a difinitive defeat as Washington attempted to gain ground. On September 26th, New York beat Boston and claimed their 7th pennant in 10 years. The Cardinals were a major force in the pennant race, actually passing the Cubs for a time. St. Louis won 5-of-6 games against Chicago this month, essentially knocking the Cubs out of the race. However, the Cardinals struggled against the Reds and Pirates and could not make up enough ground on Brooklyn. On the 25th, these two teams opened up a series against each other. The Dodgers won the first game 8-5 and clinched a 2nd consecutive pennant, setting up a rematch with the Yankees. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Mickey Lonergan (PHA)! He had a record of 7-0 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.62 and 1 shutouts. American League-Batter of the Month: Gordon "Scotty" McCarthy (CHA)! He batted .400 in 70 AB, with 4 homers and 21 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Brett Smith (STL)! He had a record of 6-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 1.92 and 1 shutouts. After being acquired by the Cardinals on 7/31, he went 9-2 and was a huge part of the pennant drive, going 3-0 against the Cubs and Dodgers in September. National League-Batter of the Month: Bud Breckenridge (PIT)! He batted .327 in 104 AB, with 7 homers and 27 RBI. Code:
American League Standings New York (A) 97 57 .630 - Washington 89 65 .578 8.0 Boston (A) 78 76 .506 19.0 Chicago (A) 72 82 .468 25.0 Cleveland 72 82 .468 25.0 St. Louis (A) 71 83 .461 26.0 Philadelphia (A) 70 84 .455 27.0 Detroit 67 87 .435 30.0 National League Standings Brooklyn 89 65 .578 - Chicago (N) 83 71 .539 6.0 St. Louis (N) 81 73 .526 8.0 New York (N) 79 75 .513 10.0 Philadelphia (N) 75 79 .487 14.0 Cincinnati 70 84 .455 19.0 Pittsburgh 70 84 .455 19.0 Boston (N) 69 85 .448 20.0 Brooklyn finally got to enjoy the limelight in the big city by defeating the Yankees in last season's World Series. The Dodgers are out to put their mark on New York baseball history, while the Yankees hope to win yet another championship, but their first since they won 4 straight from 1933-36. The Dodgers have relied on strong pitching all season long, but they will be without Stephen Dzurik (11-10, 4.02), and Edwin Impens (18-11, 3.86) is nursing an ailing back but should pitch Game 2. Their offense was still one of the best in the majors, despite the fact that Oscar Vancini, at age 35, dipped to 33 homeruns and 98 RBI this season. His longball total still led the NL, but it is a big drop from the 59 he hit last season along with a major league record 156 RBI. Jeff Bundy was steady as always and helped pick up the slack with 28 homers and 109 RBI. "Fancy" Flip DeLeon won his 2nd batting title, but as a testament to the drop in offense this season, he won it with a .327 mark, which is the lowest in major league history. The Yankees have their own batting champ in Clarence Davis, who hit .388. Jimmy Ditty led the team with 32 homeruns and 105 RBI. However, it is pitching that has really led this team. They led the majors with a 3.29 ERA, and their top three starters each won over 20 games and all had an ERA at or below 3.08. My Prediction: The Yankees went 21-8 over the end of the season and their pitching staff is stronger overall when compared to Brooklyn's. The Dodgers offense no longer outclasses New York's, so I expect the Yankees to win in 6 games. WEB PAGES UPDATED... INCLUDING WORLD SERIES BOX SCORES
WORLD SERIES Yankees 8 - Dodgers 6: These two teams surprisingly scored a lot of runs off Frank Smith and Art Booth. The score was tied 2-2 after the 6th and remained that way until the top of the 9th when catcher Chi Hung and pinch hitter Doc Reed led off with back-to-back doubles. Yankees 6 - Dodgers 2: As the game went on, it became obvious that Brooklyn's Edwin Impens had not completely gotten over his back problems. He allowed 6 runs, and Luke Riley had a relatively easy game until the 9th. In that inning, Brooklyn got 3 consecutive singles with one out, loading the bases. Riley got Jonathan Wright to pop out and Brad Coffenberger to fly out, ending the game. Dodgers 2 - Yankees 3: Brooklyn scored 2 runs in the first inning, but that was all they got as Hale Scheepers took command of the game. New York scored a single run in each of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings to take a lead that they never gave back. Dodgers 3 - Yankees 5: Down 3-1 in the 4th inning, pitcher Art Booth hit a solo homerun off Frank Smith, the first homerun by a pitcher in World Series history. In that same inning, Jimmy Ditty clubbed a 3-run dinger with two outs, giving New York a 5-3 lead that they never relenquished. First baseman Louis Kirkes, acquired from the White Sox on July 31st, was named World Series MVP. He hit .462 with a homerun, 3 RBI, 4 runs scored and a 1.379 OPS. |
