1st June 1888 After a strong start to the season the fans of the Beaneaters had to sit through a tougher month in May. The team managed to win 12 out of the 27 games they played. This has seen them tumble down the NL table from 1st to 5th position. They are now trailing the leaders by 3 games. 1st June 1888 The fans of the Bridegrooms are not even contemplating retaining the NL pennant this year after another poor month from their favourites. The team managed to pick up only 10 wins from the 28 games they played during May. The team continue to sit bottom of the NL table, 13.5 games behind the leaders. Series results Lost the final 2 games at home to the Pittsburgh Alleghenys 1-2 at home to the Chicago White Stockings 2-1 at home to the New York Giants 1-2 on the road to the St Louis Browns 1-2 on the road to the Boston Beaneaters 1-2 on the road to the Philadelphia Quakers 1-3 at home to the Chicago White Stockings 1-3 on the road to the Cincinnati Red Stockings (including a re-arranged game) 2-1 at home to the St Louis Browns First Baseman Dave Orr will be spending some time on the sidelines during June and July after he was diagnosed with a sprained ankle. He will be out for 7 weeks. As you can imaging, with only 10 wins the form of the individual players was not the strongest. The one player to buck that trend was pitcher Phenomenal Smith who managed to pick up 5 wins from his 10 starts. He pitched 82 innings to give up 61 hits and 22 earned runs for an ERA of 2.41.
