Another rain out for us. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (6) at New York (0): Joe Peters (32-4.9) (2-3) over Miah Turner (27-5.3) (6-5). Peters allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. CF Al Steel (28-7.0) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. LF Billy Galloway (26-5.3) had 3 hits with a home run. He has 10 hits in his last 3 games. Indianapolis (7) at Boston (10): William Little (27-6.0) (9-4) over Levi Giddens (36-4.8) (1-6). 1B Bill Gordon (31-3.7) hit his 3rd home run of the season. RF Dan Abrams (29-5.1) tore something in his shoulder and will miss 5 to 6 weeks. For the Hoosiers, 1B Lew Bell (31-4.2) had his season come to an end when he was beaned in the elbow shattering the bones. |

Detroit Wolverines (18-12 .600 0.5 GB in 2nd place in the Liberty League) at Louisville Bourbons (15-12 .556 2 GB in 4th place) Jiggs Niedermeyer, Det. (24-5.8) (R 3-2 2.40 7.6-1.8-4.2 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. William McLeod, Lou. (29-5.6) (R 6-6 1.92 7.9-2.8-4.6) Won - 6 to 4 in 10 innings Down 4 to 3 in the top of the 9th, CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) hit an RBI single to tie the game. In the 10th, LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) hit a 2-run triple. LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) was picked off 1st again for the 5th time this season! In all my years, no one else has ever been picked off more than twice in a season! In 8 innings, Niedermeyer allowed 4 hits, no walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had drew a bases loaded walk. How he gave up 4 runs is explained by the fact that he gave up all of his 4 hits in the early innings and Ed Engelhardt's (23-5.0) 4 errors, 3 at short and 1 at second. Al Rice (23-7.6) pitched the final 2 innings, the only base-runner reaching on an error (Engelhardt) and he struck out 4. He earned the win, becoming the 1st 10 game winner in the majors. In 10 innings, McLeod gave us 11 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. We made 5 errors and Louisville made 3. CF Ren Dunbar had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. SS/2B Ed Engelhardt had 3 hits, scored a run and had an RBI besides making the 4 errors. LF Al Lewis had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (2) at New York (1): Tom Lilly (28-6.4) (9-4) over Tom McWilliams (26-4.3) (0-4). Lilly allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. McWilliams allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Cleveland (7) at Cincinnati (3): Willard Clapp (25-4.3) (2-4) over John Stevens (31-8.2) (7-6). Clapp allowed 6 hits, 8 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he hit a triple and scored 2 runs. Rookie 2B Zachary Pfeiffer (20-4.5) had 3 hits with 2 triples, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. For the Reds, LF Dale Ferrell (30-7.9) hit a home run. Manager/CF Silver Borresen (34-6.9) tied the Liberty League record with 4 walks. He did not score a run, however. Indianapolis (5) at Boston (3): Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (3-5) over Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (5-8). McSherry allowed 5 hits, 7 walks and struck out 3. This lost by Boston puts the Wolverines back in first place! Grand National Association: Milwaukee (2) at Brooklyn (4): Al Green (25-3.8) (6-9) over Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (7-6). RF Ed Cheney (24-7.8) hit his 2nd home run of the year, a 2-run blast in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. Green allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. For the Brewers, CF Tug Stern (28-6.7) hit a double and a triple and scored both of their runs. St. Louis (3) at Providence (8): Ed Hodges (28-3.2) (7-4) over Ed Copeland (22-6.0) (0-1) in his major league debut. Hodges allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Copeland allowed 6 hit, 2 walks and struck out 3. He is at the top of most people's list of pitching prospects, but is being rushed a bit due to injuries to other pitchers. 4 of the 6 hits he allowed were doubles. The 6 errors the Terriers made did not help much either. Chicago (4) at Washington (3): Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (10-4) over Ed Bush (27-5.3) (4-8). Seguin allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3 to become the 1st 10-game winner in the GNA. C Fred Blevins (29-6.4) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year and 4 RBIs. For the Monuments, 1B Dick Blake (27-6.7), in his major league debut, had 3 hits with a double and an RBI. Kansas City (2) at Omaha (1): Piggy Lambert (24-8.2) (1-0) in his major league debut over Royal Parmelee (27-6.5) (0-1). Lambert did not allow an earned run and gave up 5 hits, no walks and struck out 6. He missed all of last season with an injured shoulder. Parmelee allowed 7 hits, 5 walks and struck out 4. |

We are in Cincinnati today to begin a 4 game series with manager/CF Silver Borresen (34-6.9) and his Reds. We beat them 2 of 3 at our place a couple of weeks ago, though they out-scored us overall in the series. They are 2nd in the League in runs scored with 5.2 per game (Detroit is now dead last with 4.2). They are 6th in runs allowed with 5.2 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 3.3). Their League Park is still a decent place to hit, but it has been toned down of late and only ranks as the 5th best hitter's park in the League. It's the 2nd easiest place to hit a home run to left field. Detroit Wolverines (19-12 .613 1st place in the Liberty League) at Cincinnati Reds (15-15 .500 3.5 GB in 5th place) Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 10-3 1.99 6.7-0.9-6.2 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Charlie Branham, Cin. (28-4.2) (R 5-5 3.65 9.8-1.8-2.8) The 1st time we face Branham we lost 7 to 2. Lost - 1 to 0 in 11 innings CF Dale Ferrell (30-7.9) singled home the winning run. He did not start the game, but came in when manager/CF Borresen hurt his shoulder busting up a double-play. Borresen will miss a week or two. Editor's Note: I will be glad when 1888 is over! The non-hitting is non-fun. Rice allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He was not sharp and our outfielders threw out 3 runners at the plate for him (each OF did it once). In 11 innings, Branham gave us 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. We made 1 error and Cincinnati made 3. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had 2 hits with a triple and a walk, but since no one else did squat, he had no runs or RBIs. For the Reds, rookie 2B Ernie Parham (26-4.3), who we traded to Cincinnati this past Winter, hit a triple to lead off the bottom of the 11th and scored the winning run. He had 2 hits on the day. Liberty League: Cleveland (6) at Louisville (3): Lou Townley (26-3.4) (9-5) over Count Childs (32-3.1) (4-6). Townley allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. McWilliams allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Indianapolis (5) at New York (2): Sal DeVaux (23-3.5) (3-10) over Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (5-5). DeVaux allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. At bat, he had 2 hits with a triple. 3B Fred Boss (25-6.0) hit his 3rd home run of the season. Pittsburgh (6) at Boston (5): Whitey Mathews (27-4.1) (7-5) over Kid Mathewson (21-6.4) (5-3). 3B Al Oglesby (24-7.6) had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. Grand National Association: Chicago (3) at Washington (7) Game 1: Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (7-4) over Pony Stanley (25-6.2) (8-3). Yurkovich allowed 7 hits, 6 walks and struck out 10. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. I don't know about you, but I am starting to get my hopes up that in his 12th season on the major leagues, Pop will finally have a winning season! And with an expansion team, to boot! Chicago (11) at Washington (7) Game 2: Tom Washam (35-6.1) (1-1) over Sammy Berry (28-5.5) (3-5). C George Sandefur (32-5.8) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. CF Ike Allen (34-5.3) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, but no runs or RBIs. SS Stub Nelson (26-5.6) hit a home run. St. Louis (3) at Providence (7): Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (7-6) over Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (4-3). Ashton allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 8. At bat, he had a hit and scored 2 runs. Richards, after starting 4-0, has lost 3 straight. SS Tom Hepner (26-7.1) had 3 hits with a triple and a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. For the Terriers, LF Joe Olson (31-6.8) was hit in the face with a pitch and fractured his cheekbone. He will be out at least a month and probably a bit longer. Milwaukee (3) at Brooklyn (1) in 12 innings: Freddy Wood (32-6.3) (2-5) over William David (25-3.6) (6-6). In 12 innings, Wood allowed 11 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. David allowed 6 hits, 6 walks and struck out 9. Kansas City (3) at Omaha (2): Lew Burnett (27-3.5) (7-6) over Tom Lee (30-6.0) (4-8). Burnett allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. For the Mutuals, CF Dave Todd (23-5.5) hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 9th to spoil the shutout. |

Grand National Association: St. Louis (7) at Brooklyn (3): Tom Wilmarth (28-5.4) (4-6) over Ren French (26-4.9) (4-6). Wilmarth allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 5. SS Harry Robinson (29-3.3) hit 2 doubles, drew a walk, stole 2 base and scored 3 runs. RF Biff Place (27-5.4), in his 1st game of the season, hit a home run and had 4 RBIs. |

Detroit Wolverines (19-13 .594 0 GB in 2nd place in the Liberty League) at Cincinnati Reds (16-15 .516 2.5 GB in 5th place) Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 5-6 2.10 8.9-1.3-2.4 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. John Stevens, Cin. (31-8.2) (R 7-6 2.95 8.7-1.7-3.7) Won - 4 to 0 We were only up 1 to 0 going into the 9th, but scored 3 runs without the aid of a hit thanks to 4 errors by the Reds. Frazier allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 1. Stevens gave us 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. He did not allow an earned run. We made 1 error and Cincinnati made 7. SS Ed Engelhardt (23-5.0) hit a double. Liberty League: Cleveland (6) at Louisville (8): William McLeod (29-5.6) (7-7) over Artie Boucher (25-6.1) (3-7). Ex-Wolverine LF Pat Womack (27-6.3) had 2 hits with a triple and a beaning, stole a base and scored 2 runs. Indianapolis (8) at New York (7): Levi Giddens (36-4.8) (2-6) over Miah Turner (27-5.3) (6-6). 2B Kid Stevens (26-8.4) hit his 3rd home run of the season. For the Gothams, 3B Ed Glass (28-4.5) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. Pittsburgh (1) at Boston (3): William Little (27-6.0) (10-4) over Joe Peters (32-4.9) (2-4). Little allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Peters allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. I know he wanted this one badly since Boston released him over the Winter. Normally, I would be all for rooting for him to get his revenge, but his loss has put the Wolverines back in 1st place! Grand National Association: Milwaukee (3) at Providence (4): Ed Hodges (28-3.2) (8-4) over Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (7-7). Hodges allowed 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. RF Joe Turner (28-6.6) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Kansas City (4) at Washington (5) in 10 innings: Ed Bush (28-5.3) (5-8) over Piggy Lambert (24-8.2) (1-1). RF John Hagadorn (38-6.3) led off the bottom of the 10th with a triple and 2B Kitty Covington (23-5.4) knocked him home with a 2-out single. In 10 innings, Bush allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8. At bat, he had 2 hits with a double. Another ex-Wolverine CF Ben Spencer (27-4.2) had 3 hits and a walk and had 2 RBIs. Chicago (6) at Omaha (7): Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2) (5-4) over Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (10-5). |

Detroit Wolverines (20-13 .606 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Cincinnati Reds (16-16 .500 3.5 GB in 5th place) Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 10-4 1.90 6.8-0.9-6.0 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Charlie Branham, Cin. (28-4.2) (R 6-5 3.25 9.2-1.8-2.9) Branham is the only pitcher to have beaten us twice already. Won - 10 to 3 Rice gave up a hit in the 9th and and had to leave the game when he landed funny on his ankle during his follow-through. My heart went up into my throat, but it turned out to be relatively minor and he should be 100% in a couple of days. In 8 innings, Rice allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3. He did not allow an earned run. At bat, he had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. I do not want to get too optimistic, but in the past week or two, Cowan has begun to show glimpses of the player of old, before the busted kneecap. We had 9 hits and tied our season high with 5 walks. We made 4 errors and Cincinnati made 3. CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) hit a double and scored a run. SS Ed Engelhardt (23-5.0) hit a triple and drew a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) hit a double and a triple, drew a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. C Jimmy Babcock (31-6.9) had 2 hits and was beaned, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) hit a triple. 2B Pat Dunbar (26-8.3) hit a double and drew 2 walks, scored a run and had an RBI. I think I mentioned it before, but he and Ren are not related. Ren is from Chicago and Pat grew up out in the Territories somewhere. 3B Dave Odekirk (23-6.5) went hitless and is 1 for his last 22. I think when Ed Aldrich returns in a few days, Odekirk will be taking a trip to Syracuse. Liberty League: Cleveland (7) at Louisville (2): Lou Townley (26-3.4) (10-5) over Count Childs (32-3.1) (4-7). Townley allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Rookie 2B Zachary Pfeiffer (20-4.5) had 3 hits with his 2nd home run of the season, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. Indianapolis (3) at New York (4): Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (6-5) over Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (3-6). SS Pussy Wise (26-6.8) hit a home run. For the Hoosiers, SS Jake Steitz (29-4.7) hit his 3rd home run of the year. 1B Dick Thacker (27-7.6) pulled a muscle and will miss 5 to 6 weeks. Pittsburgh (12) at Boston (7): Tom Lilly (28-6.4) (10-4) over Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (5-9). C Evan Eckberg (32-3.5) and 2B Jumbo Lynn (28-3.8) each hit a home run. SS Jim Ware (34-5.6) had 4 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. For the Shamrocks, 3B Highball Baxter (22-5.7) had 4 hits and an RBI. Grand National Association: St. Louis (5) at Brooklyn (2): Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) over Al Green (25-3.8) (6-10). Richards allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. 7 Brooklyn errors greatly aided the Terrier cause. Milwaukee (4) at Providence (0): Freddy Wood (32-6.3) (3-5) over Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (7-7). Wood allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Kansas City (5) at Washington (3): Lew Burnett (27-4.5) (8-6) over Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (7-5). 2B Jim McCarthy (26-7.5) had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBIs. Chicago (4) at Omaha (5) in 10 innings: Tom Lee (30-6.0) (5-8) over Pony Stanley (25-6.2) (8-4). In 10 innings, Stanley allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out 7. |

Detroit Wolverines (21-13 .618 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Cincinnati Reds (16-17 .485 4.5 GB in 5th place) Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 6-6 1.94 8.7-1.2-2.3 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. William Butina, Cin. (25-5.6) (R 3-4 3.50 8.7-2.7-2.7) Won - 11 to 1 Back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts! My head is spinning! Frazier allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. We had 13 hits and 2 walks. We made 3 errors (all by 2B Pat Dunbar) and Cincinnati made 6. CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) had 2 hits and a walk, but no runs or RBIs. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) had 2 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had 2 hits with his 4th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. C Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) had 3 hits, scored 3 runs and had an RBI and threw out the only runner to attempt a steal. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) had 2 hits with a double, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. 2B Pat Dunbar (26-8.3), besides the 3 errors, had 2 hits with a triple and 2 RBIs. Liberty League: Cleveland (5) at Louisville (4): Willard Clapp (25-4.3) (3-4) over Jumbo Hoops (23-6.5) (4-2). Indianapolis (3) at New York (2) in 11 innings: Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (4-10) over Tom McWilliams (26-4.3) (0-5). In 11 innings, DeVaux allowed 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. McWilliams allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. He has only allowed 8 total runs in his last 3 starts but has lost them all. Pittsburgh (8) at Boston (1): Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (8-5) over William Little (27-6.0) (10-5). Mathews allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. Grand National Association: St. Louis (4) at Brooklyn (5): William David (25-3.6) (7-6) over Tom Wilmarth (28-5.4) (4-7). Rookie 2B Con Nixon (25-8.1) had 3 hits with a triple and his 2nd home run of the year, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. Milwaukee (11) at Providence (8): Kid Henze (23-5.2) (2-1) over Ed Wison (27-7.3) (4-4). 2B Lou Bohus (28-5.4) had 4 hits with a double and was hit by a pitch, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B Andy Byl (34-4.0) hit a double and a home run, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Kansas City (7) at Washington (19): Sammy Berry (28-5.5) (4-5) over Dan Butler (30-4.7) (2-5). A lot of guys had pretty good days at the plate, but the best was probably CF Ben Spencer (27-4.2), who had 4 hits, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBIs. The Monuments only hit 1 extra-base hit and Kansas City hit none. Chicago (11) at Omaha (10) in 11 innings: Tom Washam (35-6.1) (2-1) over Royal Parmelee (27-6.5) (0-2). Chicago scored 4 times in the top of the 11th and Omaha almost tied it up in the bottom half. 19 walks by these 2 pitchers. LF George Everman (31-6.3), in his 1st start of the season, had 4 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. Elsewhere: Down in Syracuse, 3B Sam Boullion (28-4.8) had 4 hits and a walk, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. He has hit 18 for 34 (.529) since being sent down and will be heading back to us tomorrow. |

We have the day off and are traveling to Boston. Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) is ready to play so he and 3B Sam Boullion (28-4.8) will meet us in Boston tomorrow and 3B Dave Odekirk (23-6.5) ans SS Buck Rudd (33-4.1) are already in Syracuse. In fact, they got there in time to play the game today. They combined to go 0 for 10, though Syracuse won anyway, since everyone else in the lineup had at least 1 hit. Editor's Note: This year I paid more attention to the schedule and did my best to make it line up like real life. I am using the real schedules as they were actually played and I tried to get western teams in our universe to use the schedules of real life western teams. It has certainly made the schedule make more sense. For instance, our current road trip has seen us go to Cleveland 1st, then Louisville, and then Cincinnati. Now we are heading to Boston and then will go to New York. Liberty League: Cincinnati (0) at New York (3): Miah Turner (27-5.3) (7-6) over John Stevens (31-8.2) (7-8). Turner allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. He now leads the League with 3 shutouts. Stevens allowed 9 hits, no walks and struck out no one. Grand National Association: St. Louis (2) at Brooklyn (4): Al Green (25-3.8) (7-10) in relief of Ren French (26-4.9) over Ed Copeland (22-6.0) (0-2). French tore something in his shoulder in the 5th inning and will likely miss the rest of the season. Copeland allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. RF Tom Campbell (29-3.6) pulled a muscle in his rib cage and will miss a few weeks. After the game, owner Bob Baugh (56-7.5) of the Terriers fired manager Tom Pouncey (47-3.9). Milwaukee (3) at Providence (2): Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (8-7) over Ed Hodges (28-3.2) (8-5). Buchanan allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. Hodges allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. Kansas City (3) at Washington (4) in 10 innings: Ed Bush (28-5.3) (6-8) over Piggy Lambert (24-8.2) (1-2). 3B George Heubner (35-5.2) won the game with a 2-out single. In 10 innings, Bush allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 8. At bat, he had 2 hits. Lambert allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. Chicago (2) at Omaha (6): Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2) (6-4) over Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (10-6). Rice allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 7. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run. |

St. Louis owner Bob Baugh (56-7.5) announced that Tom Bromley (40-7.8) would manage the Terriers until he could decide on a permanent replacement. Pouncey was a slick fielding infielder with not much of a bat. He last played in 1881 for Indianapolis in the B Leagues. We are in Boston to begin a 4 game series with manager/1B Pete Bucolo (40-4.1) and his Shamrocks. We beat them 2 of 3 at our place a month ago the 1st time we met. They lead the league in scoring with 5.3 runs per game (Detroit is now 7th with 4.4). They are 5th in runs allowed with 5.1 per game (Detroit is 31 with 3.1). Their South End Grounds has undergone a transformation this season, turning it into the best hitter's park in the League and maybe the best hitter's park that ever was (except for that joke they had by the lake in Chicago a few years ago). It is a lot easier to hit home runs at Seventh Street Park in Indianapolis, but otherwise nothing can hold a candle to Boston's South End Grounds. Detroit Wolverines (22-13 .629 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Boston Shamrocks (21-17 .553 2.5 GB in 3rd place) Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 11-4 1.78 6.8-0.9-5.8 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Dave Wolf, Bos. (25-4.7) (R 5-9 3.31 9.6-2.4-3.7) Wolf has a 4.37 ERA at home and 2.89 on the road. Ed Aldrich (24-6.8), who was playing second before he got hurt, is going to play third, where he is actually more suited, for now with Jesse Flanders (28-5.4) still hurt and Dave Odekirk (23-6.5) in Syracuse. Won - 7 to 4 You knew, with Aldrich coming back, someone had to go. It was CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8), who had to leave the game with a sore hamstring after legging out an infield hit. He should miss about a week. Rice allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. Wolf gave us 13 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. At bat, he hit a double. We made 2 errors and Boston made 3. 3B Ed Aldrich had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Ren Dunbar had 3 hits with a double and an RBI. He was the hottest hitter on the team and will be missed. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. 2B Pat Dunbar (26-8.3) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. For the Shamrocks, LF Charlie Warner (34-9.2) hit his 4th home run of the season. The next batter, RF Jocko Breton (25-4.5) was drilled by Rice and had his thumb broken. He will miss at least a month. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (7) at Louisville (4): Tom Lilly (28-6.4) (11-4) over William McLeod (29-5.6) (7-8). RF Ace Trimmell (30-5.0) hit 2 doubles, drew 2 walks, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. For the Bourbons, RF Tom Panozzo (23-2.0) had 3 hits with a double and a triple and scored 2 runs. Indianapolis (2) at Cincinnati (4): Charlie Branham (28-4.2) (7-6) over Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (3-7). Branham allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. He is 7-2 since beginning the season 0-4. Cleveland (5) at New York (0): Lou Townley (26-3.4) (11-5) over Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (6-6). Townley allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. 3B Cowboy Gray (26-7.8) hit his 4th home run of the season. Grand National Association: Providence (9) at Washington (8): Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (8-7) over Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (7-6). Providence scored twice in the top of the 9th to take the lead. LF Charlie Gregor (29-5.2) had 3 hits with a double and a walk, scored 4 runs and had an RBI. The former MVP had been off to a rough start. Last season he hit .333; this year he is batting .171 even after this game. 3B Ed Knight (25-5.1) had 4 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. For the Monuments, RF John Hagadorn (38-6.3) hit his 2nd home run of the year. Before this season his last home run came in 1885. Elsewhere: At their annual convention, the National Association of Amateur Base Ball Players named CF Adams Atkinson (18-5.4) of Stony Brook, New York the top amateur player in the country. Note: Before 1871 and the advent of professional baseball there were three awards given. One each for the best player and pitcher in the country and one for the best newcomer to the national scene. Detroit Wolverines (23-13 .639 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Boston Shamrocks (21-18 .538 3.5 GB in 3rd place) Jiggs Niedermeyer, Det. (24-5.8) (R 3-2 2.33 7.0-1.5-4.0 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Kid Mathewson, Bos. (21-6.4) (R 5-3 2.10 7.0-2.0-3.3) Lost - 5 to 4 in 12 innings LF Charlie Warner (34-9.2) hit a ground ball to second with a runner on third and the throw to the plate was late. Niedermeyer allowed 12 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Mathewson gave us 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run. We made 1 error and Boston made 5. SS Ed Engelhardt (23-5.0) had a hit and a walk, stole 3 bases, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit a double and had 2 RBIs. For the Shamrocks, LF Charlie Warner (34-9.2) hit his 5th home run of the season and 2nd in as many days. He now has 33 home runs since I took over in Detroit and 12 of them have been against us. C Hub West (34-6.7) had 3 hits with a double and the longest home run I have ever seen, his 3rd of the season. He also drew a walk. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (11) at Louisville (2): Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (9-5) over Count Childs (32-3.1) (4-8). Mathews allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8. He has won 5 in a row and 7 of his last 8. CF Al Steel (28-7.0) had 4 hits with a double and scored 3 runs. 3B Phil Lane (27-7.4) hit 2 doubles, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. The Wolverines are now back in 2nd place. Indianapolis (6) at Cincinnati (5): Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (5-10) over William Butina (25-5.6) (3-6). Branham allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. Cleveland (4) at New York (5): Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (7-6) in relief of Tom McWilliams (26-4.3) over Artie Boucher (25-6.1) (3-8). 2 errors and a wild pitch gave the Gothams the win in the bottom of the 9th. McWilliams had to leave in the 2nd inning with a mild hamstring issue, but should be fine in a day or two. Grand National Association: Omaha (2) at Brooklyn (9): William David (25-3.6) (8-6) over Tom Lee (30-6.0) (5-9). David allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Providence (3) at Washington (4) in 10 innings: Sammy Berry (28-5.5) (5-5) over Ed Wison (27-7.3) (4-5). CF Ben Spencer (27-4.2) tied the game in the bottom of the 9th with an RBI single and then a passed ball gave them the win in the 10th. In 10 innings, Berry allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8. Kansas City (9) at Chicago (10) in 11 innings: Pony Stanley (25-6.2) (9-4) over Dan Butler (31-4.7) (2-6) in relief of Lew Burnett (27-4.5). LF Washington Macho (38-8.3) led off the 11th with a triple and scored on a ground-out to win the game. He had 3 hits with a double and an RBI. St. Louis (17) at Milwaukee (3): Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (6-3) over Freddy Wood (32-6.3) (3-6). 3B Kid Powell (25-7.5) had 4 hits, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Trade! Pittsburgh (LBL) sent RF Ace Trimmell (30-5.0) to Cleveland (LBL) for RF Jake Howard (29-4.6) and minor league C Tom Conner (23-8.8). Conner looks to be a middling prospect at best. Most pre-season lists had him ranked near the bottom of the top 50 prospects. Grand National Association: Washington (1) at Providence (3): Ed Hodges (28-3.2) (9-5) over Ed Bush (28-5.3) (6-9). Hodges allowed 5 hit, 7 walks and struck out 4. Bush allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. Each team made 1 error. Omaha (6) at Brooklyn (7) in 10 innings: Al Green (25-3.8) (8-10) over Royal Parmelee (27-6.5) (0-3) in relief of Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2). Rookie 2B Con Nixon (25-8.1) hit his 3rd home run of the season in the bottom of the 10th to win the game. SS Charlie Smith (30-5.6) had 3 hits with a home run, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Kansas City (9) at Chicago (5): Piggy Lambert (24-8.2) (2-2) over Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (10-7). LF Lou Baggett (26-4.2) hit his 2nd home run of the season. For the Colts, 2B Eb Provost (24-4.6) hit a triple and a home run and drew a walk. Seguin has lost 4 of his last 5. St. Louis (3) at Milwaukee (4): Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (9-7) over Fred Barrow (36-4.7) (2-6). Buchanan allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Last edited by Questdog; 11-23-2015 at 04:44 PM. |

It is true that we are not hitting as I had expected, but the two biggest bats I traded for have both been hurt most of the season so far. But even so, we were batting what appears to be a minuscule .225 as a team through the end of May, yet that batting average was good for 4th best in the League!
In real life in all of history, only 1968 had a lower overall batting average than 1888 and of the years we have ahead of us, only 1908 had a lower OPS. But we are only 6 years away from the most offensive season of all time (1894) when the average team scored nearly 7.5 runs per game and the AVERAGE batter hit .309! P.S. And Boston's park factors really are extremely high for batting average and there is no way we will be able to come close to their team average. P.S.#2: And if you only look at the National League, which is the model for the Liberty League, 1888 has the absolute lowest batting average of all time, though for overall scoring, it is not near the bottom because of the very low fielding averages. But in 1888, if you don't get help from errors, it is hard to score! Last edited by Questdog; 11-23-2015 at 11:45 AM. |

Detroit Wolverines (23-14 .622 0 GB in 2nd place in the Liberty League) at Boston Shamrocks (22-18 .550 2.5 GB in 3rd place) Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 12-4 1.92 7.0-0.8-5.7 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. William Little, Bos. (27-6.0) (R 10-5 2.89 9.4-1.7-4.5) Won - 12 to 11 in 11 innings The wind was whipping and the park is a bandbox and I think some Leprechauns were running around in the grass kicking at the ball. When you play on days like this, you need to worry about 2 things more than any other: don't walk people and limit your errors in the field. Well, we walked people and we made errors in the field and tried our best to lose the game. In both the 9th and 10th innings, the Shamrocks had the winning run at third base with nobody out, but could not score. Al Lewis (22-9.1) ended up being the hero. They had already scored one in the bottom of the 11th and had runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs when Mike Stables (32-7.1) put a charge into one to left-center that looked like a sure bet to tie the game and maybe even win it outright, but Lewis streaked to the ball, caught it, crashed into the fence and held on for the final out. Rice allowed 18 hits, 5 walks and struck out 5. Little gave us 20 hits, 1 walk and struck out 7. At bat, he had a hit and a walk and an RBI. We made 6 errors and Boston made 9. There were so many offensive fireworks that we'll just publish the box score at the end of the dispatch. Two notes: Mike Stables hit for the cycle in his 1st 4 plate appearances and then went silent. He is the 3rd player in Liberty League history (5th overall) to hit for the cycle and the 1st in 5 years. Trivia: Who was the 1st player to hit for the cycle in the GNA? Our own Ben Smith (28-6.7) in 1884 when he was playing for the now-defunct Philadelphia Quakers. Also, 3 of Al Lewis' 4 hits did not leave the infield. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (0) at Louisville (2): William McLeod (29-5.6) (8-8) over Tom Lilly (28-6.4) (11-5). McLeod allowed 6 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits and an RBI. Lilly allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Rookie 2B Tom Walker (25-3.8) will miss a week or two with a sore shoulder. Indianapolis (8) at Cincinnati (1): Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (4-7) over John Stevens (31-8.2) (7-9). McSherry allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. 3B Fred Boss (25-6.0) hit 2 doubles and drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. Cleveland (3) at New York (0): Lou Townley (26-3.4) (12-5) over Miah Turner (27-5.3) (7-7). Townley allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit, 2 walks and scored a run. Turner allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. Grand National Association: Providence (5) at Washington (2): Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (9-7) over Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (7-7). Ashton allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. 2B Dave Stricker (26-5.2) had 3 hits and a walk, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. Kansas City (13) at Chicago (11) in 10 innings: Dan Butler (30-4.7) (3-6) in relief of Lew Burnett (27-4.5) over Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (10-8) in relief of Tom Washam (35-6.1). C Gene Stone (31-5.4) hit 3 doubles, tying the GNA record, drew a walk, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. 3B Al Sarbacker (27-4.8) had 3 hits with a home run, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. St. Louis (8) at Milwaukee (9): Freddy Wood (32-6.3) (4-6) over Tom Wilmarth (28-5.4) (4-8). 1B Dave Gray (27-4.9) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Owner Bob Baugh (56-7.5) of the St. Louis Terriers announced that he had settled on a permanent manager and that it would be 2nd year LF Pat Mathews (25-5.1). Detroit Wolverines (24-14 .632 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Boston Shamrocks (22-19 .537 3.5 GB in 3rd place) Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 7-6 1.80 8.4-1.2-2.4 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Dave Wolf, Bos. (25-4.7) (R 5-10 3.49 9.8-2.3-3.7) Lost - 8 to 0 The wind was whipping even more today (21 MPH out to center) and the park was just as much a bandbox, though maybe there were not as many Leprechauns running around. None of it seemed to bother Wolf. Frazier allowed 13 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. Wolf gave us 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. We made 3 errors and Boston made 1. CF Fred Bianco (29-6.9) had 2 hits. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) had 2 hits and a walk. For the Shamrocks, manager/1B Pete Bucolo had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the year. C Frank Douglas (33-5.8) had 4 hits with 2 doubles, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (12) at Louisville (4): Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (10-5) over Count Childs (32-3.1) (4-9). C Evan Eckberg (32-3.5) had 3 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. CF Al Steel (28-7.0) had 4 hits, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. For the Bourbons, rookie CF Ed Phillips (25-3.5) had 4 hits with a double, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. The Wolverines are once again back in 2nd place. Indianapolis (9) at Cincinnati (3): Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (6-10) over Charlie Branham (28-4.2) (7-7). DeVaux allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. He has won 4 in a row. 2B Kid Stevens (26-8.4) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Cleveland (2) at New York (7): Tom McWilliams (26-4.3) (1-5) over Artie Boucher (25-6.1) (3-9). McWilliams allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. 1B John Hilliard (28-7.2) hit his 2nd home run of the season. Grand National Association: Omaha (5) at Brooklyn (14): William David (25-3.6) (9-6) over Tom Lee (30-6.0) (5-10). RF Joe Kraus (31-7.9) had 2 hits and a walk, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBIs. Providence (3) at Washington (5): Sammy Berry (28-5.5) (6-5) over Ed Wison (27-7.3) (4-6). Berry allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. C Caleb Sawyer (29-8.9) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Kansas City (4) at St. Louis (5) in 10 innings: Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (7-3) over Dan Butler (30-4.7) (3-7). St. Louis scored a run in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game and then, after Kansas City scored a run in the top of the 10th, scored twice in the last half to win. The winning run scored on an error. Last edited by Questdog; 11-23-2015 at 05:05 PM. |

Owner George Crane (51-6.3) of the Indianapolis Hoosiers announced the firing of Robert Petruzzelli (45-8.6) and the hiring of John Cusick (47-7.5) as manager. Cusick managed the Scranton Miners to a last place finish in the GNA in 1884. For the past 2 seasons, he managed in Peoria in the Northwestern League (B), winning a championship in 1886 and finishing in 4th place last year. He found himself out of a job this season when the league folded over the Winter. We are in New York, that monster of cities, to face manager Paul Richards (47-5.4) and his Gothams in a 4 game series. We split 4 games in Detroit a month ago. They are dead last in scoring runs with 4.3 per game (Detroit is all the way up to #4 with 4.5, though #4 through #7 are only separated by a few runs). They are 3rd in runs allowed with 4.6 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 3.5). The Polo Grounds has been turned into a hitter's deathtrap this year. Home runs are harder to come by in Pittsburgh, but even so, New York is by far the toughest place to hit in the Liberty League. Detroit Wolverines (24-15 .615 0 GB in 2nd place in the Liberty League) at New York Gothams (17-22 .436 7 GB tied for 6th place) Jiggs Niedermeyer, Det. (24-5.8) (R 3-3 2.62 7.4-1.7-3.7 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Tom McDowell, N.Y. (24-8.0) (R 7-6 2.52 7.8-2.5-3.5) We lost 6 to 2 the 1st time we faced McDowell. Hi Bowman (24-5.5) has had some sort of allergic fit and will be unavailable to play today (and tomorrow probably). That leaves us with only 3 healthy outfielders on the team and since I want to give RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) a day off today, SS Ed Engelhardt (23-5.0) has agreed to move to right field for this game. Won - 4 to 1 Niedermeyer allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. McDowell gave us 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out no one. At bat, he had a hit. Each team made 4 errors. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) had 2 hits, stole 2 bases and scored a run. 2B Pat Dunbar (26-8.3) hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Ducky Foster (23-9.0) hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (9) at Cincinnati (5): Joe Peters (32-4.9) (3-4) over William Butina (25-5.6) (3-7). Rookie 2B Ed Hewitt (24-5.6) had 3 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. For the Reds, RF Fleet Wilcox (31-4.9) twisted his ankle and will be limping for several days. Indianapolis (8) at Louisville (3): Jimmy Euler (27-5.5) (4-1) over Pat Womack (27-6.3) (0-1) in relief of Jumbo Hoops (23-6.5). Euler, in his 1st outing since May 1, allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. 3B Bill Lawson (31-6.9) had 4 hits with a double, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. C Sandy McKinnon (28-4.0) hit his 2nd home run of the year. Hoops exited after throwing 1 pitch in the 4th with a twinge in his elbow, but nothing could be found wrong and he should be fine. Womack is normally an outfielder and did not embarrass himself too badly. He gave up 6 runs in 5 innings, but only 1 was earned. Grand National Association: Brooklyn (4) at Providence (5): Fred Coffee (24-6.9) (1-0) in relief of Ed Hodges (28-3.2) over Al Green (25-3.8) (8-11). Hodges had to leave in the top of the 9th with a sore wrist and should miss a week or two. Coffee, normally an outfielder, faced 2 batters to get the win. Brooklyn scored all of their runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead, but Providence scored twice in the bottom half to win. SS Bill Loschiavo (30-5.8) won the game with a 1-out triple. 2B Dave Stricker (26-5.2) hit a home run. Chicago (8) at St. Louis (4): Pony Stanley (26-6.2) (10-4) over Fred Barrow (36-4.7) (2-7). 2B Eb Provost (24-4.6) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. For the Gothams, 3B Ed Glass (28-4.5) had 4 hits and scored 2 runs. Dave Frazier has pitched decently, but not exceptionally. I am very tempted to get rid of him and see what Ed Price (24-5.7) can do. At Syracuse, Price is 8-1 with an 0.65 ERA and has walked 5 batters in 9 starts. Liberty League: Indianapolis (4) at Louisville (1): Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (7-10) over Count Childs (32-3.1) (4-10). DeVaux allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. He has now won 5 in a row. Childs had to leave with an injured knee and will miss about 2 months or so. SS Jake Steitz (29-4.7) had 4 hits, stole a base and scored a run. He had 5 RBIs. None of the home runs left the field play. They are the 1st 3 home runs of his major league career. In his 6 minor league seasons he hit a total of 4 home runs. He was born in Townsend, Massachusetts, about 50 miles from Boston, right on the New Hampshire state line. Grand National Association: Brooklyn (5) at Washington (6): Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (8-7) over William David (25-3.6) (9-7). Yurkovich allowed 5 hits and 1 walk, but struck out 6. Milwaukee (3) at Kansas City (4): Lew Burnett (27-4.5) (9-6) over Kid Henze (23-5.2) (2-2). 2B Jim McCarthy (26-7.5) tripled with 1 out in the bottom of the 9th, but sprained his ankle and will miss about 2 weeks. His pinch-runner scored on an error to win the game. SS Bev Bradley (23-6.2) had 3 hits and scored 2 runs.
