Louisville Bourbons (8-7 .533 2.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (11-5 .688 1st place) Jumbo Hoops, Lou. (23-6.5) (R 2-1 1.37 5.5-2.4-3.1 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 4-2 2.47 9.5-0.7-2.1) Lost - 4 to 3 The best thing to happen today was that Frazier beaned Tom Panozzo (23-2.0). The game was tied at 3 going into the 9th, but 2 errors once again sunk us. Frazier allowed 10 hits, no walks and struck out 1. It is the 3rd straight game that our pitchers have not walked a batter. Hoops gave us 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. Each team made 6 errors. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit a double to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. He was also picked off 1st base for the 3rd time this season. No one had ever been picked off more than twice in a whole season before in any year I have managed. 3B Jesse Flanders (28-5.4) hit a triple and scored a run, but hurt his elbow making a throw and will miss the next 2 months. Now, the 2 big hitters I traded for to perk up our offense are both out for an extended period of time. It's as if I gave away half my team now for absolutely nothing. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) had a hit and 2 RBIs, but was caught stealing 3 times. 3B Dave Odekirk (23-6.5) will be sent for from Syracuse to join the team. Liberty League: Boston (7) at Pittsburgh (6): Dan Gilbert (28-6.6) (1-0) in his 1st major league start over Joe Peters (32-4.9) (1-2). Gilbert missed all of last season with an elbow injury. He walked 8 in the game, but Peters walked 9. 3B Highball Baxter (22-5.7) had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. C Hub West tied the Liberty League record by drawing 4 walks. He also had a hit and an RBI. Cincinnati (4) at Indianapolis (2): William Butina (25-5.6) (2-2) over Levi Giddens (36-4.8) (1-3). Butina allowed 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. 1B Willie Burton (33-8.5) hit 2 home runs to give him 3 on the season and had 3 RBIs. For the Hoosiers, LF Hick Fahl (31-5.3) hit a home run. Grand National Association: Washington (5) at Omaha (4): Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (4-3) over Tom Lee (30-6.0) (4-3). Yurkovich allowed 7 hits, 4 walks and struck out 1. C Caleb Sawyer (29-8.9) had 3 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Kansas City (0) at Chicago (5): Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (6-2) over Al McClaughry (24-5.6) (5-2). Seguin allowed 3 hits, no walks and struck out 5. McClaughry allowed 2 hits, 5 walks and struck out 5. St. Louis (7) at Milwaukee (3): Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (1-0) over Kid Henze (23-5.2) (0-1) in his major league debut. Richards allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. 3B Kid Powell (25-7.5) had 3 hits with a double and a triple, stole a base and scored 3 runs. |

Louisville Bourbons (9-7 .563 1.5 GB in 3rd place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (11-6 .647 1st place) Count Childs, Lou. (32-3.1) (R 3-2 3.22 7.5-3.2-4.4 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Wild Bill Perrell, Det. (24-7.3) (R 1-0 1.00 5.0-2.0-3.0) In our new lineup, Ed Engelhardt (28-5.0) will move to 2nd, Dave Odekirk (23-6.5) will start at 3rd and Ducky Foster (23-9.0) will be at short. Sam Boullion (28-4.8), who is batting .146, will sit on the bench. Lost - 4 to 1 Once again, we beaned Tom Panozzo (23-2.0), but he ended up with the last laugh. Louisville did not get their 1st hit until the 6th inning, but then they scored 4 times in that frame. Perrell allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit. Childs gave us 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Each team made 2 errors. CF Fred Negus (24-6.7) hit a double. In 17 games, he has yet to get an RBI. Part of that is because he has been our lead-off man since Ed Aldrich (24-6.8) went down, but mostly it is because he is hitting under .200 overall and is 0 for 14 with runners in scoring position. SS Ducky Foster (23-9.0) did not get a hit, but handled 10 chances at short without an error. RF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had a hit and a walk and scored our only run. His hitting streak has reached 15 games. 2B Ed Engelhardt (23-5.0) had 2 hits. 3B Dave Odekirk (23-6.5) had a horrible debut with the Wolverines by hitting into 2 double-plays. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) hit a triple and had our only RBI in his only plate appearance, but sprained his knee and will miss 2 weeks. We now have an unbelievable 8 players on the Disabled List. C Jimmy Babcock (31-6.9) hit a double. For the Bourbons, RF Tom Panozzo (23-2.0), after getting plunked his 1st time up, went on to hit a double and his 2nd home run of the season. He had 2 RBIs. OF Hi Bowman (24-5.5) was called up from Syracuse to take the spot of Al Lewis. Liberty League: Cincinnati (2) at Indianapolis (1): John Stevens (31-8.2) (5-2) over Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (1-3). Stevens allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 2. At bat, he hit a double. McSherry allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. Thus was the 15th game played in Seventh Street Park this season and the 1st in which no one hit a home run. Boston (0) at Pittsburgh (4): Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (3-4) over William Little (27-6.0) (4-3). Mathews allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit and 2 RBIs. Little allowed 5 hits, 4 walks and struck out 2. 3B Al Oglesby (24-7.6) had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. New York (5) at Cleveland (4) in 11 innings: Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (3-2) over Lou Townley (26-3.4) (4-3). In 11 innings, McDowell allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. Townley allowed 16 hits, but did not walk anyone and struck out 2. 3B Sol Renaud (31-5.7) had 3 hits with a double and a triple and scored the go-ahead run in the 11th. Grand National Association: Brooklyn (5) at Providence (8): Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (3-4) over Al Green (25-3.8) (2-7). Ashton allowed 9 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Ren Mason (22-6.9) hit 2 doubles and had an RBI. SS Tom Hepner (25-7.1) had 3 hits with a double and 3 RBIs. Washington (2) at Omaha (3): Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2) (2-3) over Sammy Berry (28-5.5) (3-2). Omaha scored all 3 of their runs in the bottom of the 9th. C Charlie LeFevre (34-5.0) hit a 2-run double to tie the game and then scored the winning run on a single by P Rice. LF Tom Duncan (23-6.6) was knocked out when he was hit in the head with a pitch and will probably miss 3 weeks. Kansas City (6) at St. Louis (7): Fred Barrow (36-4.7) (2-4) over Lew Burnett (27-4.5) (3-4). St. Louis scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th to win. The final blow was a 2-out single by CF John Confair (34-6.6). For the Cowboys, manager/1B Connie Frenette (33-4.7) had 3 hits with 2 doubles and scored 2 runs. Chicago (7) at Milwaukee (1): Pony Stanley (24-6.2) (5-1) over Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (3-4). Stanley allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7. At bat, he had 2 hits with a triple and scored 3 runs. RF Candy Simpson (29-6.8) had 3 hits, was hit by a pitch, stole a base, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. 1B Bill Alexander (31-5.5) hit a home run. |

Grand National Association: Brooklyn (4) at Providence (5): Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (5-2) over William David (25-3.6) (3-3). Providence scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead. Kansas City (7) at St. Louis (8) in 10 innings: Tom Wilmarth (28-5.4) (3-3) over Dan Butler (30-4.5) (2-3). Kansas City scored 3 times in the top of the 10th, but St. Louis scored 4 in the bottom half to win. It is the 2nd straight day that they have scored at least 3 runs in their final at bat to win in sudden death. C Willie Ticknor's (31-3.1) only hit of the game ended it. 1B Ed Zarnoch (26-4.1) had 4 hits with a double and a walk, scored the winning run and had 2 RBIs. Chicago (7) at Milwaukee (8) in 11 innings: Zenas Keough (27-4.5) (2-5) over Pete Rinehart (29-6.2) (5-3). Rookie CF Ed Sudduth (25-4.4) won the game with his only hit of the day. 2B Lou Bohus (28-5.4) had 4 hits and a walk and scored a run. For the Colts, 2B Eb Provost (24-4.6) had 4 hits with a double and a triple and a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. |

The final game of our series with Louisville was rained out today. Perhaps it is just as well, the way we have been playing of late. Liberty League: Cincinnati (5) at Indianapolis (4): Charlie Branham (28-4.2) (2-4) over Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (1-7). Branham allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run. DeVaux only allowed 5 hits, but 2 of them were home runs. He walked 3 and struck out 4. LF Will Muller (24-6.4) hit one of the home runs and 1B Willie Burton (33-8.5) hit the other, his 4th of the season. Boston (1) at Pittsburgh (9): Tom Lilly (28-6.4) (5-3) over Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (2-6). Lilly allowed 12 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3, the same numbers that Wolf allowed. And each team only made 2 errors. And each pitcher beaned his opposite number. The difference was that the Puddlers hit 9 of their 12 hits in the 7th and 8th innings when they scored 7 runs. RF Joe Coffey (31-5.2) hurt his knee and will miss about 5 weeks. New York (7) at Cleveland (6): Miah Turner (27-5.3) (4-2) over Artie Boucher (25-6.1) (3-2). 6 errors by each team was the defining feature of this game. Grand National Association: Kansas City (2) at St. Louis (4): Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (2-0) over Al McClaughry (24-5.6) (5-3). Richards allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. McClaughry allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 8. Plus St. Louis made 7 errors yo Kansas City's 4. Brooklyn (4) at Omaha (2): Ren French (26-4.9) (2-4) over Lee Sprague (28-3.5) (6-2). French allowed 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 1. Sprague allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. LF Joe Kraus (31-7.9) had 2 hits with a double and a walk, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. He is now hitting .417, has scored 14 runs in 14 games and his OPS is still over 1.000 (1.095). His OPS was .482 for us last season. |

Manager/CF Silver Borresen (34-6.9) brings his surging Reds to town today to begin a 4 game series. They have won 4 in a row to move over .500 after a slow start. They finished 2nd to us last season. They are 2nd in the League in scoring with 5.4 runs per game (Detroit is 7th with 4.5). They are 6th in runs allowed with 5.5 per game (Detroit is #1 with 3.4). Cincinnati Reds (9-8 .529 1.5 GB tied for 3rd place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (11-7 .611 1st place) John Stevens, Cin. (31-8.2) (R 5-2 2.47 7.5-1.3-4.2 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 5-2 2.45 7.8-1.0-5.2) Today, the bench players will get some action, since we never hit Stevens much anyways. Won- 3 to 2 In the first inning, the Reds got their lead-off man to 3rd with no outs, but Rice got manager/CF Silver Borresen to ground out to 3rd and then he struck out 1B Willie Burton (33-8.5) and RF Fleet Wilcox (31-4.9) to end the threat. I tried to trade Sam Boullion (28-4.8) this past Winter and no one wanted him because of his high salary. He made 3 errors today and I have banished him and his .135 batting average from the team. I am hoping I can find someone to trade him to before his train arrives in Syracuse tomorrow. If not, he can rot on the Syracuse's bench.... Rice allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 10. At bat, he had 3 hits and an RBI. Now, THAT's lookin' like an Ace! Stevens gave us 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. We made 6 errors and Cincinnati made 3. RF Hi Bowman (24-5.5), in his first at bat as a Wolverine, hit a home run. He later drew a walk. He will later get to play more games for the Wolverines. LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had a hit to extend his streak to 16 games, stole 2 bases and scored a run. Two games in a row now, he got a hit in his last at bat to keep the streak alive. 1B Honus Paulson (29-8.4) hit a double and scored a run in his Wolverine debut. We signed him as emergency filler material a week or so ago, since we have so many players on the Disabled List and I did not want to call up any of the rookies. IF Jack Potter (33-6.8) is eligible to come off the Disabled List and will take Boullion's spot. Not sure he is an upgrade, but at least he is nicer and cannot really do much worse. Liberty League: Boston (6) at Cleveland (4) in 10 innings: William Little (27-6.0) (5-3) over Lou Townley (26-3.4) (4-4). 2B Mike Stables (32-7.1) had 4 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. CF Pat Stafford (27-5.4) will be sore for a few weeks after getting hit by a Townley fastball on his elbow, but he should be able to play. Grand National Association: Washington (15) at Providence (7): Ed Bush (27-5.3) (4-3) over Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (3-5). 3B George Heubner (35-5.2) had 4 hits with a double and a home run, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 6 RBIs. 1B Billy Little (35-3.6) tied the GNA record with 3 doubles. He scored a run. Brooklyn (9) at Omaha (0): Al Green (25-3.8) (3-7) over Tom Lee (30-6.0) (4-4). Green allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. He has won 3 of his last 4 after starting 0-6. C Billy Boblett (30-5.4) and 1B Fred Collins (24-5.2) each hit a home run. I tried to get Collins over the Winter, but they wanted too much. Chicago (3) at Milwaukee (1): Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (7-2) over Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (3-5). Seguin allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 3. Buchanan allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. |

No one would give me anyone useful for Sam Boullion (28-4.8), so he is safely tucked away on Syracuse's bench. Who knows? Maybe he can rehabilitate himself. If not, he will be a free agent come December. He was the 1st player I ever drafted after taking the Detroit job and at times he showed some promise, but he has never lived up to being a 1st round pick. Cincinnati Reds (9-9 .500 2.5 GB tied for 4th place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (12-7 .632 1st place) William Butina, Cin. (25-5.6) (R 2-2 3.05 8.0-2.8-1.9 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 4-3 2.40 9.6-0.6-2.0) Won - 5 to 3 Frazier allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. Butina gave us 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. We made 3 errors and Cincinnati made 4. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) hit a triple, drew a walk and scored a run. RF Hi Bowman (24-5.5) had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI and threw out a runner at 3rd. He'll keep playing until he quits hitting. SS Ducky Foster (23-9.0) had 3 hits, stole 3 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. P Jiggs Niedermeyer (24-5.8) is eligible to come off the Disabled List, so P Wild Bill Perrell (24-7.3) is on his way back to Syracuse, but not because he deserves to be there. He gave us 2 good outings. Only 9 hits allowed in 18 innings! If Niedermeyer falters, Perrell will be welcomed back. Liberty League: Louisville (3) at Indianapolis (1): William McLeod (29-5.6) (4-4) over Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (1-4). McLeod allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. McSherry allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. RF John Rodgers (36-4.4), in his 1st game of the season, hit a home run. New York (4) at Pittsburgh (5): Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (4-4) over Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (3-3). Mathews allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 2. McDowell allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. At bat, he hit 2 doubles, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Boston (3) at Cleveland (0): Kid Mathewson (21-6.4) (3-1) over Willard Clapp (25-4.3) (1-2). Mathewson allowed 5 hits, no walks and struck out 6. Clapp allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 6. C Frank Douglas (33-5.8) hit a home run. Grand National Association: Washington (7) at Providence (2): Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (5-3) over Ed Hodges (27-3.2) (5-3). Yurkovich allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. Yurky had to overcome 7 errors by his teammates. Brooklyn (4) at Omaha (3): William David (25-3.6) (4-3) over Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2) (2-4). David allowed 8 hits, 6 walks and struck out 4. Rice allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 6. 1B Fred Collins (24-5.2) hit a double and his 2nd home run in as many days and had 2 RBIs. Kansas City (11) at St. Louis (2): Lew Burnett (27-4.5) (4-4) over Fred Barrow (36-4.7) (2-5). Burnett allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. LF Lou Baggett (26-4.2) had 4 hits and a walk, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. SS Bev Bradley (23-6.2) had 3 hits and 4 RBIs. CF Heinie Ashmore (23-6.0) hit a home run, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. Barrow had to leave in the 7th inning with a herniated disk in his back and is expected to miss 3 to 4 weeks. Chicago (11) at Milwaukee (10) in 11 innings: Pony Stanley (24-6.2) (6-1) over Zenas Keough (27-4.5) (2-6) in relief of Kid Henze (23-5.2). Each team scored 3 runs in the 10th. 3B Stub Nelson (26-5.6) hit 2 doubles and a triple, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. For the Brewers, LF Tom Kelly (24-5.3) had 4 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. |

Cincinnati Reds (9-10 .474 3.5 GB tied for 5th place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (13-7 .650 1st place) Charlie Branham, Cin. (28-4.2) (R 2-4 4.44 11.6-2.4-2.7 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Jiggs Niedermeyer, Det. (24-5.8) (R 1-1 3.86 7.1-1.9-1.9) Lost - 7 to 2 Niedermeyer, looking a bit rusty, allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. Branham, looking pretty sharp, gave us 7 hits, no walks and struck out 4. We made 6 errors and Cincinnati made 1. Rookie CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) had 2 hits with a triple and scored a run. He will be getting an extended trial at the expense of Fred Negus (24-6.7), who is batting .192. LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) had 2 hits with a triple, but no runs or RBIs. His triple led off an inning, but he did not score. His hitting streak is now at 17 games. 3B Dave Odekirk (23-6.5) had 2 hits. C Jimmy Babcock (31-6.9) did not have a very good game but he did something I have never seen before: he picked a base runner off at first base by snapping a throw down there. Editor's Note: Though catcher's have often thrown to first, this is the 1st time I can remember one of them actually catching somebody off base. Liberty League: Boston (11) at Cleveland (6): Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (3-6) over Artie Boucher (25-6.1) (3-3). C Hub West (34-6.7) had 3 hits with a double and his 2nd home run of the year, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. For the Spiders, 1B Dave Kelly (26-6.0) will miss 2 to 3 weeks with a sore foot. Grand National Association: Washington (2) at Providence (3) in 11 innings: Ed Wison (27-7.3) (3-3) over Sammy Berry (28-5.5) (3-3). At the end of the 2nd inning, the score was tied at 2 and then no one scored again until an error by 2B Kitty Covington (23-5.4) let in a run in the bottom of the 11th. In 11 innings, Wison allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. Berry allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. 1B Pat Ross (31-5.4) had 4 hits in his 1st start of the year, but pulled a muscle and will be gimpy for a few weeks. For the Monuments, LF Cal Campbell (29-7.2) pulled a muscle a little harder than Ross and will miss the next month. Brooklyn (2) at Omaha (5): Lee Sprague (28-3.5) (7-2) over Ren French (26-4.9) (2-5). Sprague allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run. French allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out no one. Elsewhere: Down at Syracuse, Sam Boullion (28-4.8) had 3 hits in his 1st action with the Stars. |

Once again, the final game in a series of ours is rained out. Liberty League: Boston (5) at Cleveland (11): Lou Townley (26-3.4) (5-4) over William Little (27-6.0) (5-4). 3B Tom Nelson (21-6.6), who I was loathe to trade but did anyway, had 5 hits, stole 4 bases, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBIs. For the Shamrocks, manager/1B Pete Bucolo (40-4.1) pulled a muscle and will sit for a week. Elsewhere: Once again, Sam Boullion (28-4.8) cracked out 3 hits for the Syracuse Stars, this time with a double. |

Manager Paul Richards (47-5.4) has his Gothams in town to begin a 4 game series, the final series of our home stand. They are 2nd in runs scored in the League with 5.2 per game (Detroit is #7 with 4.3). They are 6th in runs allowed with 5.3 (Detroit is still #1 with 3.5, but Louisville is a close 2nd with 3.7) New York Gothams (9-10 .474 3 GB in 7th place in the Liberty League) at Detroit Wolverines (13-8 .619 1st place) Miah Turner, N.Y. (27-5.3) (R 4-2 2.04 7.8-0.5-4.1 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 6-2 2.16 7.3-1.0-5.8) Won - 6 to 0 We did not get our 1st hit until the 4th inning, but it was an RBI single by 2B Ed Engelhardt (23-5.0) to give us the 1 to 0 lead. The Gothams led off the 2nd with their 3rd hit of the day and that would be the last one they would get. Rice sat down 15 in a row after that hit. In fact, the only 2 runners to get on base the rest of the game both reached on errors by Rice himself. Rice allowed 3 hits, no walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit. Turner gave us 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. We made 2 errors and New York made 1. Rookie CF Ren Dunbar (24-6.8) hit a 2-run triple in the 7th that gave us a 4 to 0 lead. In the 1st inning, though his throwing arm is very weak, he threw out a runner at the plate to preserve the shutout. LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) went hitless, ending his streak at 17 games. 2B Ed Engelhardt had 2 hits and an RBI. C Cliff Robinson (30-6.1) had a hit and 2 walks, scored a run and threw out 1 of 2 base stealers. SS Ducky Foster (23-9.0) had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. 1B Sam Cowan (32-5.1) is in another slump (2 for his last 19). He is now hitting .195 on the season and looking very much like an old man who missed all of last season with a broken knee cap. I am not going to bench him yet (with all the injuries, there really is no one else to try there), but he is getting moved out of the #3 slot in the lineup. Liberty League: Boston (12) at Indianapolis (3): Kid Mathewson (21-6.4) (4-1) over Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (1-8). Mathewson allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 3. 2B Mike Stables (32-7.1) had 3 hits with a home run, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. 1B Bill Gordon (31-3.7) had 2 hits with his 2nd home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. Cincinnati (7) at Pittsburgh (8): Tom Lilly (28-6.4) (6-3) over John Stevens (31-8.2) (5-4). At bat, Lilly had 3 hits and a walk, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. For the Reds, LF Ed Kent (24-3.6) separated his shoulder and will miss about 3 weeks. Louisville (4) at Cleveland (3): William McLeod (29-5.6) (5-4) over Willard Clapp (25-4.3) (1-3). McLeod allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. RF Tom Panozzo (23-2.0) had 3 hits with a triple, stole a base and scored a run. For the Spiders, 1B Charlie Hale (30-4.8) will miss 2 weeks with a sore knee. Grand National Association: Kansas City (0) at Brooklyn (2): Al Green (25-3.8) (4-7) over Al McClaughry (24-5.6) (5-4). Green allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. McClaughry allowed 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. At bat, he had 2 hits. The Cowboys made 6 errors. Chicago (1) at Providence (6): Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (4-5) over Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (7-3). Ashton allowed 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2. RF Joe Turner (28-6.6) hit a home run. St. Louis (5) at Washington (2): Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (3-0) over Ed Bush (27-5.3) (4-4). Richards allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he hit a triple. Milwaukee (5) at Omaha (4): Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (4-5) over Tom Lee (30-6.0) (4-5). Buchanan allowed 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. |

(23-7.6) (R 7-2 1.93 6.9-0.9-5.7) Lost - 3 to 0 Rice pitched awesome and did not deserve to lose. He tied the all-time Wolverine record for K's in a game held by Lou Townley (26-3.4) and William McLeod (29-5.6), who both did it in 1886. Rice allowed 7 hits (3 of them of the infield variety), 2 walks and struck out 12. Turner gave us 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. We made 4 errors and New York made 2. We are off on the road now for almost the next whole month. First stop is in Cleveland where we will face rookie manager Mickey Baker (45-7.5) and his Spiders for 4 games. Two Spiders were Wolverines last year: SS Tom Nelson (21-6.6) and P Lou Townley (26-3.4). They are leading the League in runs scored with 5.2 per game (Detroit is still #7 with 4.2, but very close to dropping to 8th). That 5.2 league-leading runs per game is over a half run worse than the worst scoring team from last year (the same Cleveland Spiders). They are 7th in runs allowed with 5.7 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 3.3). Their League Park is a fairly good place to hit, very similar to our Recreation Park this year with batting averages a little higher and home runs and extra-base hits a little lower. Detroit Wolverines (15-10 .600 0.5 GB in 2nd place in the Liberty League) at Cleveland Spiders (11-14 .440 4.5 GB in 7th place) Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 5-4 2.42 9.0-0.9-2.0 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Lou Townley, Clev. (26-3.4) (R 6-4 2.11 8.2-0.8-4.4) Lost - 3 to 2 The Spiders scored all of their runs on home runs. Frazier allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. Townley gave us 7 hits, no walks and struck out 2. Each team made 4 errors. C Jimmy Babcock (31-6.9), proving the old adage that catchers can hit pitchers they have caught, had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. For the Spiders, CF Ed William (27-6.0) led off their half of the 1st with his 2nd home run of the season. SS Cowboy Gray (26-7.8) had 3 hits with a triple and his 3rd home run of the year, stole a base and had 2 RBIs. Liberty League: Indianapolis (4) at Pittsburgh (12): Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (5-5) over Levi Giddens (36-4.8) (1-5). 3B Al Oglesby (24-7.6) had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. Grand National Association: St. Louis (6) at Omaha (7) in 10 innings: Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2) (3-4) over Tom Wilmarth (28-5.4) (3-5). The wining run was walked home with 1 out. 2B Jocko Cole (26-6.1) had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. For the Terriers, CF John Confair (34-6.6) hit a home run. Elsewhere: Down in Syracuse, P Ed Price (24-5.7) beat Troy to improve his record to 6-0 with an 0.67 ERA. He has only walked 4 batters in 6 starts. |

Green allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 10. Green and Seguin's ERAs are nearly identical. |

For the Monuments, 1B Billy Little (35-3.6) sprained his knee and will miss 3 weeks. St. Louis (2) at Omaha (5): Lee Sprague (28-3.5) (9-2) over Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (4-1). Sprague pitched 5 shutout innings, but pulled his groin legging out a double and will miss a month. Tom Lee (30-6.0) finished the game to preserve the win. |

Yet again, the final game of a series is rained out for us. So we have a few days off until we need to be in Louisville for the Decoration Day Double-Header. LF Al Lewis (22-9.1) and IF Pat Dunbar (26-8.3) are both healed up and ready to play, so I sent 3B Honus Paulson (29-8.4) and CF Fred Negus (24-6.7) to Syracuse. The Stars need them too, as they have had a rash of injuries of late and only have 18 healthy players. Liberty League: Cincinnati (7) at New York (4): John Stevens (31-8.2) (7-5) over Miah Turner (27-5.3) (6-4). Stevens allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 2. 1B Jim Lagana (32-6.6) hit his 1st home run of the season, LF Will Muller (24-6.4) hit his 2nd and RF Fleet Wilcox (31-4.9) hit his 3rd. Grand National Association: Chicago (4) at Brooklyn (5): Al Green (25-3.8) (5-9) over Pat Seguin (24-4.4) (9-4). Rookie CF Ferdie Brady (22-5.6) knocked home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th. He had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. For the Colts, SS Bob Robertson (25-4.1) will miss 2 weeks with a sprained elbow. Kansas City (1) at Providence (2): Ed Hodges (28-3.2) (6-4) over Lew Burnett (27-4.5) (5-6). Hodges allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 4. Burnett allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. C Spider Sullivan (27-6.7) hit his 2nd home run of the year. Milwaukee (4) at Washington (3): Zenas Keough (27-4.5) (3-8) over Pop Yurkovich (36-5.6) (6-4). Keough allowed 7 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Yurkovich allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. RF Ed Capps (25-6.1), who led the GNA in home runs last season, hit his 2nd round-tripper this year. For Washington, 3B George Heubner (35-5.2) hit his 2nd home run of the year. Elsewhere: Down in the Central Interstate League (B), Sy Calhoun (22-4.3) of the Danville Browns no-hit the Terre Haute Hoosiers and won, 2 to 0. He walked 5 and struck out 6. He is now 4-6 on the season with a 1.78 ERA. |

The Chicago Colts released P Pete Rinehart (29-6.2) today. He was 5-3, but had an ERA of 3.87 and was walking more than he struck out. He has been a Colt all 7 years of their existence and was 96-99 for them. They recalled Tom Washam (35-6.1) from Minneapolis to take his spot. Washam was 5-1 with a 3.17 ERA in the Western Association (A). Washam led the GNA in strikeouts in 1884, but control has always been an issue for him. And as you can see below, he did a bit worse than Rinehart had been doing. Liberty League: Cincinnati (1) at New York (8): Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (5-3) over Charlie Branham (28-4.2) (4-5). McDowell allowed 3 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. 3B Ed Glass (28-4.5), fresh off the Disabled List, hit a double and a triple, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBIs. He has now played in 7 games this season and is batting .500 and has taken 7 walks and struck out once. For the Reds, LF Will Muller (24-6.4) sprained a finger and will miss 2 to 3 weeks. Louisville (2) at Boston (3): William Little (27-6.0) (8-4) over William McLeod (29-5.6) (6-6). Little allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 8. McLeod allowed 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1. CF Pat Stafford (27-5.4) pulled a hamstring and will miss a month. Grand National Association: Chicago (6) at Brooklyn (16): Ren French (26-4.9) (5-9) over Tom Washam (35-6.1) (0-1). Washam went the distance, allowed 17 hits and 9 walks and struck out 4. He also beaned 5 batters. 1B Fred Collins (24-5.2) hit his 3rd home run of the season. Ex-Wolverine LF Joe Kraus (31-7.9) had 2 hits, scored a run and had 4 RBIs. Milwaukee (7) at Washington (4): Zachary Buchanan (27-4.0) (7-5) over Ed Bush (28-5.3) (4-7). 2B Ed Record (27-7.5), who played at Syracuse last year for the Wolverines, had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. |

Wednesday, May 30, 1888 Decoration Day
Time for holiday double-headers! We are in Louisville to begin a 4 game series with manager Elmer Higgins (42-6.4) and his Bourbons with a double-header today. They beat us 2 of 3 at our place 3 weeks ago. They are 5th in runs scored with 4.9 per game (Detroit is #7 with 4.2). They are 2nd in runs allowed with 4.1 per game (Detroit is still #1 with 3.4). Their Eclipse Park is perhaps the 2nd best pitcher's park in the League this season, behind only the Polo Grounds in New York. All types of hits are harder to come by here, but it is especially tough to get home runs if you hit them to left field. Detroit Wolverines (17-11 .607 in 1st place in the Liberty League) at Louisville Bourbons (14-11 .560 1.5 GB in 3rd place) Game 1 Al Rice, Det. (23-7.6) (R 8-3 2.03 6.9-1.0-5.8 H/9-BB/9-SO/9) vs. Count Childs, Lou. (32-3.1) (R 4-4 3.47 7.8-3.3-4.5) The 1st time we met, Childs beat us 4 to 1. Won - 4 to 2 Rice allowed 6 hits, no walks and struck out 8. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI. Childs gave us 7 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. At bat, he had a hit. We made 2 errors and Louisville made 3. LF Ben Smith (28-6.7) hit a double, drew a walk and had an RBI. For the Spiders, C Andy Runnels (31-7.8), another ex-Wolverine, had 3 hits with a triple and scored a run. Game 2 Dave Frazier, Det. (28-5.7) (L 5-5 2.31 9.0-0.9-2.1) vs. Jumbo Hoops, Lou. (23-6.5) (R 4-1 1.42 5.5-2.2-4.1) The 1st time we met, Hoops only gave us 6 hits and beat us 4 to 3. He is currently leading the League in HR and Hits Allowed per 9 innings. Lost - 3 to 2 in 18 innings This is how good of an offense we are: we were shut out for 6 innings (6!!!) by an outfielder. Yo be fair, he was an awesome pitcher in high school but that was a long time ago and his fastball is not fast. 3B Freddy Parsley (28-7.5) finally put us out of our misery in the bottom of the 18th. He had 4 hits with a double and a triple and 2 RBIs. In 17.1 innings, Frazier allowed 16 hits, 7 walks and struck out 8. In 12 innings, Hoops gave us 9 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. Rookie LF Pete Armstrong (21-4.6) went 6 innings, giving us 4 hits, 3 walks and striking out 2. ONe of the 2 was Frazier and the other was RF Hi Bowman (24-5.5) who will not hear the end of this for a long time, if I can help it. We made 2 errors (1 in the 18th that greatly aided the cause) and Louisville made 6. I'm not going to go through what everyone did. A few of them had a couple of hits, but when you get 8 at bats, a couple of hits is no big deal. The main feature of the game was the poor base running. Our guys stole 2 bases and were caught 5 times. Plus we had one thrown out at the plate. The Bourbons fared little better, stealing 2 bases and getting caught 4 times. Babcock was awesome behind the plate until the 18th when he fielded a bunt and threw it away, putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Liberty League: Pittsburgh (3) at New York (2) in 10 innings Game 1: Tom Lilly (28-6.4) (8-4) over Tom McWilliams (26-4.3) (0-3). In 10 innings, Lilly allowed 5 hits, 5 walks and struck out 2. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run. McWilliams allowed 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3. CF Al Steel (28-7.0) had 3 hits with 2 doubles, but no runs or RBIs. LF Billy Galloway (26-5.3) had 3 hits with a triple and 2 RBIs. Pittsburgh (10) at New York (5) Game 2: Whitey Mathews (25-4.1) (6-5) over Tom McDowell (24-8.0) (5-4). LF Billy Galloway had 4 hits (giving him 7 on the day), drew a walk, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. Cleveland (11) at Cincinnati (6) Game 1: Lou Townley (26-3.4) (8-5) over William Butina (25-5.6) (3-4). CF Ed William (27-6.0) had 4 hits, stole 4 bases and scored 2 runs. LF Jake Howard (29-4.6) hit his 3rd home run of the year, drew 2 walks, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBIs. RF Tom Steiner (21-4.9) is going to miss the next 2 weeks with a sore shoulder. For the Reds, RF Fleet Wilcox (29-4.9) hit his 4th home run of the season. Cleveland (3) at Cincinnati (14) Game 2: Charlie Branham (28-4.2) (5-5) over Artie Boucher (25-6.1) (3-6). Branham allowed 8 hits, no walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had 3 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. SS Tub Saslow (22-5.8) had 2 hits with a double and a walk and 4 RBIs. For the Spiders, 3B Tom Nelson (21-6.6_, the ex-Wolverine, pulled a muscle and will miss 2 to 3 weeks. Indianapolis (6) at Boston (9) Game 1: Dave Wolf (25-4.7) (5-7) over Sal DeVaux (33-3.5) (2-10). LF Charlie Warner (34-9.2) had 3 hits with his 3rd home run of the year, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. Indianapolis (3) at Boston (4) Game 2: Kid Mathewson (21-6.4) (5-2) over Frank McSherry (32-4.1) (2-5). Mathewson allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4. Just to be clear, I believed Mathewson was going to be a great pitcher. To me, that makes trading him for little return even more stupid. Grand National Association: Milwaukee (2) at Brooklyn (0) Game 1: Kid Henze (23-5.2) (1-1) over William David (25-3.6) (6-5). Henze allowed 5 hits, 5 walks and struck out 1. David allowed 7 hits, no walks and struck out 9. Baseball is not a just game. Milwaukee (2) at Brooklyn (4) Game 2: Ren French (26-4.9) (4-5) over Zenas Keough (27-4.5) (3-9). Rookie 2B Con Nixon (25-8.1) hit a 2-out, 2-run home run in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. French allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. St. Louis (4) at Providence (12) Game 1: Tom Ashton (24-5.2) (6-6) over Jimmy Richards (25-0.9) (4-2). 1B Pat Ross (31-5.4) had 4 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. For the Terriers, C Willie Ticknor (31-3.1) hit a home run. St. Louis (8) at Providence (9) Game 2: Ed Wison (27-7.3) (4-3) over Tom Wilmarth (28-5.4) (3-6). Wison wins a game in which he walked 9. C John Toler (30-6.4) had 3 hits with a triple, scored 2 runs and ended the game with a long fly ball. For the Terriers, LF Pat Matthews (25-5.1) hit a home run. Kansas City (3) at Omaha (2) Game 1: Lew Burnett (27-4.5) (6-6) in relief of Al McClaughry (24-5.6) over Tom Lee (30-6.0) (4-7). McClaughry had to leave after 2 innings when he pulled a stomach muscle running the bases. He is going to miss 5 to 6 weeks. That would seem to be a death blow to the Cowboys' hopes for repeating as champions. In 7 innings, Burnett allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1. Lee allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 9. At bat, he had 2 hits and an RBI. Did someone say something about Baseball being unjust? Lee has now lost 6 in a row. For the Mutuals, C Charlie LeFevre (34-5.0) hit his 2nd home run of the season. Kansas City (1) at Omaha (6) Game 2: Skyrocket Rice (23-5.2) (4-4) over Dan Butler (30-4.7) (2-4). Rice allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. 2B Jocko Cole (26-6.1) hit 3 doubles to tie the GNA record, scored a run and had an RBI. For the Cowboys, LF Lou Baggett (26-4.2) had 3 hits with a double and a triple and an RBI. Chicago (12) at Washington (3): Pony Stanley (25-6.2) (8-2) over Sammy Berry (28-5.5) (3-4). Stanley allowed 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 6. SS Stub Nelson (26-5.6) had 4 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Ike Allen (34-5.3) hit a home run. The second game was rained out. |
