And, their track record. Crisp can't be relied upon to hit or stay in the lineup.

Oh, I see, I thought you were talking about just JD and Coco.

After the two games, both taken by the Yankees, it seems clear to me who the daddy is right now.

Gee I had never hated Clemens before in my life, like I did today.

Yep it is. The daddy is the team with 80 wins... The lead is still 6, there's only 29 games to go...

One advantage we have over the Yankees is that we both have 7 games left against an AL East rival. For us it's the Orioles but the Yankees have the Blue Jays - I know who I'd rather have the extra game against (shame it's not the Devil Rays though)

I wouldn't The Orioles have stuck it to us a couple of times this year already. Also, we still have 5 more head-to-head games this year. It's not quite over yet

No we don't... We have the pleasure of an 18-game set this season not the normal 19, so it's 7-7 with 4 to play.

Two blasphemous ideas for a Yankees fan, I suppose:

1. I'm glad Boston has been competitive these years. The rivalry with them is a great one and has made following baseball more enjoyable to me.

2. Further, I get more enjoyment out of a close race then dominating the division the entire season, having a punched ticket to the playoffs. Of course, the best scenario is the Yankees battling and scrapping their way to the World Series, winning it all in a tough matchup with . . . the Cubs!

What did you expect me to say, the Mets? Nah. That "rivalry" does not do much for me, sorry.

AL Central leader

Baltimore(52-61)
3 home games
4th in AL East

Detroit(63-51)
4 home games,
4 road games
Trails wild-card race

Los Angeles(66-47)
3 road games
AL West leader

Boston(69-45)
3 home games
AL East leader, best record in MLB

Make or break time here we come.
Let's say thomamon called it and the Yankees sweep today. That means, despite some ups and disappointing downs, the Yankees would have gone 12-8 in these 20 games. If they lose today, 11-9.

Not bad, considering the quality of these opponents. They did not gain ground (except maybe in the WC race?) but they held their own. The September schedule looks a bit easier.

I just heard from Skip Bayless that Roger Clemens sitting on the bench has been worth more this year than A-Rod.

That's not bad at all, especially considering the fact that BAL stuck it to us during this stretch too.

If the Yanks can sweep today, they'll be 5 out. That'll give them 2 weeks to gain 2 games before the 3 game set in Fenway. I know it'll be very tough to sweep the Sox twice in a row, but at least that would give the Yankees control over their own fate.

redsoxford, thanks for the correction. I mis-read a foxsports article.

The weird part about all of this is that I'm more looking forward to Kennedy's start on Saturday than today's game. I'm really enjoying getting to watch (well, hear about) all of these kiddies this year. It's a pleasant change.

Really what killed the Yanks last week was the schedule and their fourth west coast trip this season. What happened to the good old days when we would play Ana, Sea and Oak in one swing. Really, there are major flaws for everyone in the schedule and something should be done about it.

Let me tell you my thinking on the Yankees right now and for the rest of the season.

Forget the wild card, forget the division. Wipe them out of your mind, thats what you tell the players. Your job is to go out there and win every game. Play everyone as if its the last, do what you have to do to win. They are now in control of their own destiny puling to within even of the wildcard.

If the Yankees could win today and if somehow they can pick up 2 games between now and the series in Boston, they do have a shot at the East. I also would suspect that if we do sweep them today, it may send the Sox into a tail spin(Or maybe its more of me hoping).

You brought them this far, thomamon. Now is not the time to be changing your approach. Don't lose sight of the goal. I want you to tell these guys that anything less than a WS ring is unacceptable here in NY. You knew it when you signed on. We're tied for the WC right now and we need every game. Now go out there and do what George pays you to do. Go find some dirt on Dave Winfield!!

I've been wondering that myself. Maybe it made too much sense?

I bet interleague play had a lot to do with it.

My goal is still the east, thats why I don't want to concentrate on the WC. I just want to win, win, win and the rest will take care of itself. I truly believe if we win todays game, we are gonna have a very fun September.
