Sweet.

Hour and a half rain delay, Ortiz gets yanked, but our fearless leader keeps Loaiza in the game. Even though he's given up 3 runs already.

Like I said.

Obviously the delay helped settle Esteban down. :-X

Calero just absolutely dominated Mora, and made Tejada look like a 12 year old in little league on a slider about 3 feet outside the zone.

Not that we needed him to do that last night too or anything, right Macha? [/bitter fan]

And we can sleep with sole possession of first place for another night.

Dare I say it, but Macha basically used the bullpen right...

Chavez NEEDS Thomas behind him, but what he really needs is to not play right now and get healthy (see my posts above re: Macha). Crosby needed to be moved down in the order, and apparently its worked tonight (albeit against Ortiz' ghost). Ellis just needs to find his swing IMO until the leadoff spot is his again. We really need the 2005 2nd half Ellis.
Ortiz wasn't any good when he was good.

Here we go, some weekday day baseball for you:

Ellis
Kotsay
Bradley
Chavez
Thomas
Kielty
Payton
Crosby
Melhuse

What's that? Four outfielders and Big Frank in the game? That is Mark Kotsay playing FIRST BASE, folks.

At least he stayed in the game. We need him big time.

Good win for the A's. Let's just keep Bradley in one piece.

Work kept me away from seeing the game today. I heard about it all and checked the boxscore, but what happened to Bradley? Is he gonna be alright or is Dan Johnson on his way back?

From what I gathered he twisted his ankle rounding first, but stayed in the game.

And they even brought Swisher in the game in the 8th to get Kotsay away from 1B for defense, and they replaced Kielty and not Bradley. So my guess is he's fine, especially with the off day tomorrow.

9 days from now when Bradley hasn't played in a game and we're complaining about how he should have been DLd, I'll remember this post.

It's really, really annoying that Frank Thomas continues to hit 5th in the order. And sure enough, Chavez makes another out to end the game tonight. I'm not saying Thomas would've done anything, but I'd much rather have him at the plate than Mr. Inside-Half-of-the-Plate-Only.

Glad I wasn't around to see it. But the good news is LAAoA lost to K.C. again. And Texas is up in the 8th, but I'm less afraid of them.

I'm way more afraid of Texas. The Angels offense has 1 scary guy. I think some of their pitchers are really overrated and Mike Scoscia gives away 3 outs a game with his horrendous managing style (plus, umpires can't like that he's on the field arguing every other inning).

Texas has decent pitching (and it's going to get better if Eaton ever gets back) and a much better offense. I think they'll end up in 2nd place at this rate.

Nice win for our boys today. I didn't get to see it, but I think the five-run deficit early on and Chavez hitting 4th again would have made me puke. Sometimes it's good to just see the final score and smile.

Now this, from ESPN Insider (yes, I'm a sucker and I pay for this stuff):
Quote:
Jul 22 - The Mets could dangle Lastings Milledge for Barry Zito, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports. Oakland GM Billy Beane is the west-coast president of the Lastings Milledge Fan Club, and Beane has gone so far as to shoot off flares recently that indicate Zito isn't as untouchable as most teams think he is.

Dating back to last winter, the Mets have shown more interest in Zito than any other club. But in the past, it was the price (Milledge and Aaron Heilman) that was prohibitive. Now, according to baseball men who have spoken with Beane, he isn't even asking for Heilman anymore. With Rich Harden out until September, the A's would need to get a pitcher back -- but "not necessarily in that deal," said one AL executive.
I still drool at the possibility of getting our green and gold hands on Milledge. Not sure how much truth there is to this, but if it was up to me, I'd do it.

Zito has carried this staff. The only reason the A's are in first place is because of their pitching and it scares me to think Beane might move him, even if Milledge is going to be a solid player. This would be a move for the future, and first place teams shouldn't be trading away star players for the future.
