The fans of the Athletics had the smiles put back on their faces in July after the teams form picked up again. They are not sure it will be enough for the Pennant but are looking forward to a strong finish to the year. The team went 16-11 in July and moved to 2nd place in the AL table, 11 games behind the leaders.

Series Results
3-0 at home to the Washington Nationals
1-1 at home to the Detroit Wolverines

The injury news was very mixed for the team during the month. The player that had the most mixed news was First Baseman Paul Hines. Hines returned from injury mid month only to find himself back on the sidelines at the end of the month after picking up a shoulder strain. He will be out for 2 weeks. Centre Fielder Fred Mann saw his season ended after he fractured his hand. He will be out for 2 months. Catcher Pat Dealy also returned from injury during the month.

The Athletics improved form in July came on the back of some excellent pitching. The best of the starters was Silver King who won 6 of his 9 starts. He pitched 80.2 innings to give up 93 hits and 29 earned runs for an ERA of 3.24.

Right Fielder Cliff Carroll's season went form bad to worse in July. No sooner was he back from a 2 month injury than he managed to sideline himself again. His new injury is a strained posterior cruciate ligament that will keep him out for 4 weeks.

The improvement in form for the Alleghenys was helped by the pitching finding a groove. The best pitcher during the month was Charlie Buffinton who picked up 8 wins from his 9 starts. He pitched 79.1 innings to give up 72 hits and 25 earned runs for an ERA of 2.84. This earned him the NL Pitcher of the Month Award.

The Alleghenys just made their run to late to get into the shake up at the end of the season which has left their fans frustrated. The team had a very good month in August by picking up 17 wins from the 27 games they played. This was good enough to close the gap on the leaders but not enough to keep them in the play off hunt. They are now in 3rd place in the NL table, 5 games behind the leaders.

Series Results
3-1 at home to the St Louis Browns
0-3 on the road to the New York Giants
2-1 on the road to the Brooklyn Grays
3-0 on the road to the Cincinnati Red Stockings
1-2 on the road to the Chicago White Stockings
2-1 at home to the Philadelphia Quakers
2-1 on the road to the Boston Beaneaters
2-1 at home to the Brooklyn Grays
2-0 to start home series against the New York Giants

The team managed to get right fielder Cliff Carroll back from the treatment table mid month. This good news was tempered by the news that First Baseman Mike Dorgan sprained a finger to be sidelined for between 1 and 2 weeks.

Starter John Clarkson was the star on the mound this month. He picked up 7 wins in the 9 games he played. He pitched 79.1 innings to give up 79 hits and 18 earned runs for an ERA of 2.04. This earned him the NL Pitcher of the Month for August
