TSN PLAYER PROFILE - ULISH GROCE Chiefs QB

ULISH GROCE : OVERCOMING ADVERSITY BUT CAN HE OVERCOME INTERCEPTIONS?
Undrafted in 1942, the former Auburn signal caller spent a year playing semi-pro ball before being invited to the Chiefs training camp prior to the 1943 season. It was a mild surprise he did not get selected as Groce had some potential according to many scouts. However, it was a very raw player that entered the 1942 draft and no team seemed willing to take a chance on him mainly because of his tendancy for throwing interceptions in college.

"I'm aggressive out there," Groce said at the time. "Yes, I take chance but that's who I am. I want to be the guy who wins the game for my team. I may force it from time to time but the guys who refuse to go for victory usually seem much less turned off by the taste of defeat. I can't stand that taste."

When he was invited to the Chiefs camp in 1943 it was almost as an afterthought. Kansas City, having lost both their second and third string QB from the previous season needed a warm body to help get them through training camp. Groce was signed for the league minimum and entered camp hoping he could earn a spot on the practice squad. The Chiefs had hired their third coach in 3 years that offseason and it was clear from the beginning new boss Peyton Otto was not happy with the club's qb situation.

Veteran Bill Hill was brought in from Tampa to be the new starter despite the fact that Donnie Alley started 10 games as a rookie for the 8-8 Chiefs in 1942. A third round pick was spent on former Penn State signal caller Terrill Hennigan who in Otto's mind might surpass Alley as the backup. Groce, as mentioned above, was merely a warm body to add depth in the preseason.

As fate would have it Ulish Groce just happened to be a man in the right place at exactly the right time. He tossed a pair of touchdown passes in a mop up role in the first preseason game and looked good in the second one as well. In the third preseason game Bill Hall suffered an injury that would end his season. Alley did not look sharp through the first 3 games but he was given the starter's job with Groce moved up to the number two slot due to inconsistant play from rookie Hennigan.

In the final preseason game Alley got hurt. It was serious enough he would miss the first 3 weeks of the season so all of a sudden Ulish Groce was the opening week starter. It was hardly a fairytale debut for Groce who completed just 6 of 23 passes in a 35-22 season opening loss at home to Buffalo. He was also intercepted twice, something that would continue to haunt him throughout his career. He settled down and won his next two starts and that would be enough to give Coach Otto the confidence to let Groce take every snap of the 1943 season for the Chiefs. The highlight of his rookie season would be a 4-touchdown day in a win at Tennessee.

The job has been his ever since. Otto would last just two seasons as head coach in Kansas City but new coach Jermaine Nott kept Groce as the starter and he responded with a career best performance in 1945, lowering his interception total from 40 to 23. After three years making the league minimum Groce was rewarded with a huge contract extension prior to the 1946 season. However, he better not get too comfortable as just weeks after the extension was inked the Chiefs selected a QB with their first round pick. Some felt Tommy *Thompson, the 12th overall selection from Tulsa, would wrestle the starting gig away from Groce but once again lady luck smiled on Ulish. Thompson was injured during an exhibition game serious enough to be placed on injured reserve meaning Groce would have the starter's job without a challenger.

Groce, while occassionally showing flashes of brilliance appears to lack the decision-making skills necessary to be a front-line QB in the NFL. In 64 career starts he has been picked off 120 times. This season he threw just 12 touchdown passes and was intercepted 24 times. Yet somehow he helped the Chiefs to an 11-5 record and the first playoff berth in franchise history.

Coaches fall in love with the rocket arm and the odd outstanding performance such as the impressive wins over Seattle in week 14 this season or Arizona the following week. The problem is coaches are never sure when the poised superstar Groce will show up or if we will be forced to endure another 4 interception day like he suffered through twice this season. It may come down to what he does in the postseason as to whether or not the starting job will be his next season. Tommy Thompson will be raring to go and he has the first round pedigree. However, Groce appears to have luck - or perhaps something more - on his side and based on what he has accomplished so far in his career it would be foolish to bet against him.

Just thought I'd say this is excellent and I have 1 question: Are you planning on stopping at a certain year or are you going as long as you feel like writing it?

Thanks, badluckinootp. To answer your question I plan on going as long as I feel like writing it and it appears there are at least a couple of people interested in reading about it. I honestly have no idea how long that will be but right now I am having a great time with this sports universe.

If you look closely it is amazing how much Groce looks like a young Len Dawson. They even wore the same number

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING NEWS : December 25, 1946
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
BROWNS, TEXANS AND REDSKINS ARE IN! PLAYOFFS BEGIN NEXT WEEK
The Washington Redskins and Houston Texans claimed the final two wildcard berths while Cleveland prevailed in the AFC North as the NFL season came to a close.

After 4 straight losses the Washington Redskins finally got on track and surprised San Francisco 27-10 but the win came at an awful price. Redskins quarterback Sammy *Baugh, who missed half the season with an injury, was sidelined in the second quarter and is doubtful for next week's wildcard game. The Redskins opponent in that game will be a rematch with the 49ers although next week's contest will be on the west coast. The 49ers loss, coupled with Philadelphia beating Arizona 45-22, cost San Francisco a first round bye. Ken Neal looked good in a playoff tuneup, tossing 4 touchdown passes for the Eagles. The loss meant little to 8-8 Arizona as the Cardinals had already clinched a wildcard.

It seemed like no one wanted to win the AFC North. Cleveland needing a win to clinch looked terrible in losing 21-12 to Indianapolis. However, the Browns backed into the playoffs because Pittsburgh lost 28-23 at home to Houston. The loss not only cost the Steelers the AFC North but also a wildcard berth which ended up going to the Texans after Oakland also lost. The Raiders were beaten 30-20 by New England.

Next week it will be 8-8 Washington visting San Francisco (11-5) while New Orleans (10-6) hosts Arizona (8-8) in NFC wild card action. In the AFC Houston (8-7-1) travels to Tennessee (11-5) while 11-5 Kansas City visits Cleveland (9-7). Chicago, Philadelphia, Denver and New England draw the first round byes.

In other week 17 action Stacey Jolley of Miami gained 141 yards rushing but it wasn't enough as the Dolphins fell 27-10 to Kansas City. It was enough, however, to give Jolley the league rushing title as he finished the season with 1744, 20 more than Steve *Van Buren of the Jets. Van Buren was held to just 78 yards rushing in a 34-17 loss to San Diego.

Denver handled Buffalo rather easily in a 28-19 win. Broncos DB Ed Newberry strengthened his candidacy for NFL defensive player of the year with 2 forced fumbles and 9 tackles.

Sid *Luckman threw 4 more touchdown passes to give him 40 on the season as the Bears beat Atlanta 38-21. Chicago finishes with a league best 14-2 record.

Todd Berger rushed for 92 yards and added 49 yards receiving to propel New Orleans past Green Bay 21-13.

Minnesota beat Tampa 23-7 but the Vikings slim playoff hopes dissappeared with the Washington victory.

Detroit topped Carolina 23-16 as both teams finished with 6-10 records.

St Louis beat the Giants 38-24 ending a season that started so well before just crumbling for New York.

Seattle dropped Dallas 31-17. The loss gives the Cowboys a 4-12 record and first pick in the college draft. Who they draft is anyone's guess right now because Dallas looks awful on both sides of the ball.

Keith Musso ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns to help Jacksonville past Cincinnati 30-24

and Tennessee dumped Baltimore 35-24.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL BOWL GAMES
The Bowl season kicked off Christmas Eve with North Carolina State beating Rutgers 14-3 in the Cigar Bowl at Greensboro. The Wolfpack finish with a 10-1 record while Rutgers suffers it's first defeat after 8 wins and a tie.

There is one game today which has 9-0 independant Nevada meeting PCC runner-up Stanford (6-2-1) in the Harbor Bowl from San Diego. The complete bowl schedule can be found in the stats and standings section of this issue.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
A SMALL MEASURE OF REVENGE FOR WILDCATS AS SEC SEASON OPENS
It certainly does not make them even but the Kentucky Wildcats had to feel like it was more than just another win when they dropped Alabama 93-76 in the opening week of SEC play. Alabama, of course, retains bragging rights after beating UK to win the NCAA championship last March. However, Kentucky is looking more and more like the favourite to win it all this time around. The Wildcats are 13-1 after wins over Alabama and Auburn this week and are ranked number 1 in both the AP and Coaches poll.

What makes Kentucky's start even more impressive is that senior center Kenny Chichote, who averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds a year ago, has missed all but 4 games with a torn bicep. 6th man Joe *Rocker has also missed the last 5 games. Rocker who was averaging over 14 points a game before suffering an eye injury should be back in early January. Chichote is hoping to return by the end of January.

Senoirs Paul Noel (15.9 ppg, 11.6 reb) and Cliff Baker (14.3 ppg, 4.1 apg) have picked up the slack while Larry Hathaway (10.4 ppg) and freshman Bob *Donham (10.1 ppg) have stepped up to fill the void.

Besides the SEC, the Big Ten is the only other conference to begin play prior to Christmas. Indiana and Minnesota both jumped out to 2-0 starts while Michigan is 1-0. The Hoosiers, behind a career high 22 points from sophomore guard Dick *McGuire nipped Ohio State 66-64 in a mild upset. An even bigger upset in the Big 10 occurred Monday when Minnesota embarrassed number 20 Illinois on it's homecourt 80-49.

SOUTHERN CAL FALLS FROM NUMBER ONE RANKING
The USC Trojans basketball team dropped from number one in the polls after losing 67-61 in Missouri on Friday. One other large upset involving top 25 teams occurred as Massachusetts surpised Boston College 62-54. The win knocks BC from 4th to 7th in the AP Poll.

Here is the top 25 released this morning:

RECRUITING TRAIL
PREP STARS HUTCHINS AND MCGUIRE MAKE VERBAL COMMITMENTS
Two of the most coveted high school seniors have announced where they plan to spend the next four years. Al *McGuire decided not to join his brother Dick at Indiana. Instead the New York native will stay in his hometown and play for CCNY. McGuire had narrowed his choices down to Indiana, NYU and St John's before deciding on CCNY. He becomes the second bluechip prospect to decide on CCNY. Earlier in the month Charlie *Share, a 6'11" center from Cincinnati, Ohio choose CCNY over Ohio State, Notre Dame and Holy Cross.

Meanwhile Mel *Hutchins, a scoring machine from San Francisco passed on the hometown Dons to sign with Oregon. In addition to those two schools Hutchins was also considered UCLA and Brigham Young.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE AND BAYLOR FANS GET EARLY CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
There are still a large number of undecided players but judging by the early going North Carolina State and Baylor are the big winners in the recruiting wars. Each school has received verbal committments from three bluechip prospects. Baylor will be adding center Neil *Johnson, a Chillicothe Ohio native who passed on Ohio State to join the Bears, along with guards Mel *Payton and Bob *Wilson.

The Wolfpack recruits are guard George *King and forwards Paul *Horvath and Sam *Ranzino. King is from Charlston, West Virginia where he is average 28 points a game for Stonewall Jackson High. Gary, Indiana native Ranzino is considered the best of the three while Horvath can play center as well as forward.

The biggest name player who has yet to commit is Loy *Doty. The Preston, Idaho native is leaning towards North Carolina but is also heavily considering Fresno State and Wyoming.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE BOSTON RED SOX
The Red Sox came tantlizingly close to claiming their first pennant since 1922 but in the end Boston just ran out of steam. The good news for Red Sox fans is that the core of the team's offense is in it's prime. What could be bad news is last season virtually every Red Sox pitcher enjoyed a career best year and Boston was still a quality starter away from becoming a truly dominant team. If the pitchers revert to earlier form it could be a long season. On the other hand, the Red Sox offense may just be strong enough to prevent that from happening.

The offense is rock solid led by 28 year old Ted Williams (.322,31,93) and 31 year old Babe Young (.305,19,95). The outfield consists of Williams in left, 34 year old Mel Almada (.290,8,46) in center and 32 year old Stan Spence (.277,9,71). Dom Dimaggio (.278,0,5) and Tommy Holmes (.246,2,28) add depth. The infield features Young at first base, light hitting 25 year old Ben Steiner (.197,2,44) at second, 34 year old Johnny Hudson (.284,6,59) at shortstop and 2-time gold glove winner 27 year old Johnny Pesky (.310,3,45) at third. Catcher Roy Partee (.285,6,45) is just 29 but coming off of a broken wrist so it remains to be seen if he can recover fully. If not veterans Bill Atwood (.235,0,6) and Sammy Holbrook (.220,4,26) will fight for the starting position.

If 32 year old Andy Karl (21-10, 2.59) can duplicate his breakout season of a year ago it will go a long way towards easing concerns about the rotation. Bob Bowman (19-9, 3.07) will be 37 and it is unlikely he will duplicate last years results. Bowman had never won more than 7 games entering last season. 31 year old Tex Hughson (10-4, 3.29) and 30 year old Rube Melton (14-12, 4.45) also enjoyed career best years last season. 24 year old Dave Ferriss (9-10, 3.70) is a pitcher to watch and 25 year old Jim Wilson may be ready for the majors after two seasons in AAA.

OUTLOOK - It's up to the pitching. The bats are strong enough to get the Red Sox into the postseason. If the pitching can be as good or better than last year they could finally get that pennant that has eluded the franchise for 25 years.

1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX
Can things get any worse for a franchise that has not won a pennant since the inagural season of the American League in 1901? The White Sox finsihed dead last for the fifth straight year. They have not even finished a year at .500 since going 70-70 in the shortened 1919 campaign. There is also little hope of things improving in the near future. The core players are all in their late thirties and the farm system is barren.

29 year old Eddie Lopat (13-21, 4.44) is the closest thing the White Sox have to a number one starter. Originally White Sox property Lopat spent 2 seasons with the A's before getting dealt (or if you prefer banished) back to the Windy City. Frank Biscan (10-10, 3.06) is just 27 and may still reach the potential the Browns originally saw in him before giving up on his ever reaching it. 36 year old Orie Arntzen (11-18, 3.64) is another Athletics castoff. The rest of the staff will be an assortment of broken down veterans and rookies with little potential.

Last season the White Sox finished 14th in runs allowed and dead last in runs scored. Not a good stat if you are trying to win ballgames. The offense is downright offensive. Danny Litwhiler (.287,11,64) is 30 years old and probably wondering who he ticked off in the Phillies system to cause them to trade him to Chicago 2 years ago. 36 year old catcher Harry Danning (.291,3,40) is the only other veteran worth mentioning.

OUTLOOK - It will be another long season at Comiskey. The White Sox problem is the few decent young players they managed to develop through the years are always traded off for broken down veterans in an effort to give the team a quick fix and get out of the basement. Of course it never works in Chicago for a club that has finished no better than 6th for each of the past 16 years. Make that soon to be 17 years.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
LEAFS WINNING STREAK UP TO 6 GAMES
The Toronto Maple Leafs remain the hottest team in the National Hockey League as wins over Detroit, Chicago and New York this week increased their winning streak to 6 straight games. Ted Kennedy led the way once again, notching 6 points to take over the league scoring lead from Chicago's Max Bentley.

However, the hottest scorer for the week was not Kennedy, but rather rugged Detroit winger Ted Lindsay. Lindsay scored 6 goals in three games this week including a 4-goal effort in Detroit's 6-3 victory over last place Chicago on Wednesday. In addition to Chicago, the Red Wings beat slumping Montreal but lost to the Leafs. Detroit with 37 points, still has a 9 point lead on the now-second place Maple Leafs but Toronto does have two games in hand.

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
BIG THREE IN WEST DIVISION CONTINUE TO DOMINATE
The St Louis Bombers, Chicago Stags and Cleveland Rebels continue to set the pace in the BAA West Division. Each of the three has enjoyed particularily good success against East Division foes and last week was no exception.

Cleveland won all three of it's games against the East beating Toronto, New York and Philadelphia. The key to the Rebels success has been the offensive contributions provided from Ed Sadowski (18.8 ppg) and Frankie Baumholtz (13.9). The Rebels lone loss on the week came against Western cellar dweller Pittsburgh in a game Sadowski missed with a minor injury.

St Louis split a home and home series with Boston and won on the road in Washington. The Bombers are not a high scoring lot although guards Johnny Logan and Belus Smawley are each averaging more than 10 points a game. St. Louis has enjoyed success so far mainly because of having one of the best defenses in the league.

Chicago, the third team in the Western race has enjoyed some solid offensive production from Max Zaslofsky (13.4), Chuck Halbert (13.4) and Don Carlson (11.6) plus a tenacious defense. The Stags won both their contests this week, a close win in Providence and an easy victory at home over Detroit.

BOXING BEAT
CAN ANYONE TAME THE RAGING BULL?
On Friday January 12th Tony Zale will attempt to do something no man has done since the postwar era of professional boxing began - bring down Jake Lamotta. Many fight experts give Zale little to no chance of winning the 15 round bout at the famed Madison Square Garden. A small minority feel that if anyone can knock off the champ it is the veteran Zale. For proof they point to Zale and Lamotta's performances against one of their two common opponents - Rocky Graziano.

Graziano, at 31-14-1, lost to both Zale and Lamotta twice. In the first Lamotta-Graziano bout early in the post war elimination tournament Lamotta won easily with a ninth round TKO but in their second meeting Lamotta needed a split decision win to keep his perfect record intact. Meanwhile Zale has had a pair of slugfests with Graziano, winning both by knockout, one in the 5th and the other in the 11th round.

However, the other common opponent for Lamotta and Zale is top contender Holman Williams. Williams gave Lamotta all he could handle but the champ prevailed in a 15 round unanimous decision in a September bout that decided the middleweight title. Zale, on the other hand, was decimated by Williams losing via a third round tko.

TSN has to agree with the majority of the so-called experts and predict Lamotta will win the fight.

Special Pull-out Section : 1946 In Review

1946- A LOOK BACK AT THE FIVE GREATEST MOMENTS OF THE YEAR
With 1946 coming to a close TSN takes a look back at the five greatest one day events over the past year in sports. Because we restricted our choices to events that occurred on a single day the exciting baseball pennant races are not included on this list. The next special report will name the Athlete of the Year.

5- THE FIRST GAME OF THE NBA
It was not much of a contest as the New York Knickerbockers manhandled the Toronto Huskies 74-48 but it is a moment that marked the birth of the NBA and for that reason alone it deserves inclusion on this list. The league is known as the BAA rather than the NBA at this stage and it will undoubtedly have to endure some growing pains but on Friday November 3, 1946 (note in real life it was Friday November 1) the NBA was formed.

4- JOE LOUIS KO's EZZARD CHARLES
With World War II over and boxing back in business it was decided a championship tournament would be held in each weight division to determine a postwar title. The marquee division of boxing - the Heavyweight class - came down to a showdown between a pair of unbeaten boxers. When the dust cleared Joe Louis had improved to a perfect 7-0 after flattening Charles in the 8th round.

3 - BRITISH OPEN MARATHON PLAYOFF
It took 23 playoff holes before Byron Nelson finally beat Australian Peter Thomson to win the British Open at historic St. Andrews. As one reader of TSN commented "I never knew golf could be this exciting." Nelson made a terrific charge on Sunday making up 5 strokes to force an 18-hole playoff on Monday. Nelson and Thomson each shot an even par 72 during the 18 hole playoff. At that point the two golfers returned to the first tee for a sudden death playoff. Both Nelson and Thomson parred each of the first 4 holes, all par fours. On the par 5 5th, Nelson sank a 30 foot birdie putt while Thomson came up short in his birdie effort

2 - STEVE VAN BUREN SHREDS THE DETROIT DEFENSE
New York Jets back Steve *Van Buren set a single game NFL rushing record by gaining 271 yards on 25 carries as the Jets beat Detroit 14-3. Van Buren, who had touchdown runs of 99 and 76 yards, also had 4 catches for 25 yards and returned a pair of kickoffs for 42 yards. The previous single game rushing record was 268 yards set by rookie Antowain Anderson of Atlanta last year against Tampa.

1 - THE ARMY - NOTRE DAME COLLEGE FOOTBALL SHOWDOWN AT YANKEE STADIUM
Army retakes the number one spot in the college football pool with a 16-7 victory over Notre Dame in what was billed 'The College Football Game of the Year'. Notre Dame struck early when junior quaterback Johnny *Lujack marched the Irish down the field midway through the first quarter. With a second and goal on the Army 4 yard line Lujack rolled out and seeing no one open tucked the ball under his arm and beat 3 Army defenders to the corner of the endzone. Army tied the score early in the second quarter when QB Arnold *Tucker connected with senior wide receiver Barney *Poole on a 12 yard touchdown strike. It remained tied at the half.

Army wore down the Notre Dame defense with a punishing ground game. While the Irish never did break the defense did bend enough to allow Army to connect on three second half field goals to make the final score 16-7. The key player for Army had to be offensive tackle Albert *Nemetz who opened up holes for running back Glen *Davis and QB Tucker all day. Tucker more than made up for injured fullback Doc *Blanchard, gaining 87 yards on the ground. Davis added 84 yards rushing to the Army offense.

EDIT Anyone know how I can get more than 1 image to display in a post?

I use the IMG thing to do photos. But if you mean photos off of your own computer then I don't know.

I have a question unrelated to this thread that I wanted to ask you... check your PM box please.

Special Report = 1946 Tsn Athlete Of The Year

SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR
SID LUCKMAN CHICAGO BEARS QB
There were certainly a large number of candidates worthy of consideration for the title of 1946 Sportsman of the Year but no one athlete totally dominated his position the way Sid *Luckman of the Chicago Bears stood out above all others in the National Football League.

It was quite a year for the veteran Chicago Bears signal-caller. Back in January Luckman led the Bears to the NFC title and a berth in the championship game against Baltimore. The Bears came up short in that game but to start the 1946 NFL season Luckman looked like a man on a mission. He started all 16 games and led the Bears to a 14-2 record and a first round bye in the playoffs.

Almost a certainty to win the TSN NFL MVP Award this season, Luckman tied the league record for QB rating in a season (which he set last year) and threw a career best 40 touchdown passes while being picked off just 11 times. He will be selected to the league allstar team as well as named league offensive MVP and player of the year. Luckman is the NFL career leader in yards passing and touchdown passes.

Others who received consideration included boxers Joe Louis and Jake Lamotta, college football players Glen Davis and Charlie Trippi, Pittsburgh Pirate Cy Young Award winning pitcher Cliff Melton and golfer of the year Byron Nelson.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING NEWS : January 1, 1947
NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
MIRACLE FINISH AS TEXANS KNOCK OFF TENNESSEE
The Houston Texans pulled off the greatest comeback in NFL playoff history as they overcame a 23-0 deficiet to rally past Tennesse 31-23. Tennessee fans were left shaking their heads in disbelief as they filed out of Music City Stadium. With 1 minute remaining in the third quarter the score was 23-0 Titans and Tennessee had dominated all facets of the game, limiting Houston to just 60 yards of total offense. The hometown fans had already begun the victory celebration when kicker Laverne Bethea finally put the Texans on the board with a 49 yard field goal in the final minute of the third quarter.

The celebration quieted a little when Tennessee return man Flip McMillan fumbled the ensuing kick-off and it was Houston ball on the Tennessee 12 yard line. Three plays later Brad Johnson's five yard touchdown run cut the Tennessee lead to 23-10. Still there seemed little cause for concern as the Titans had so thoroughly dominated the game thus far.

Titans QB Manfred Gayle proceeded to put the fans at ease as he marched the offense down the field, eating up the clock as he went. With a first and ten on the Houston 13 Gayle tossed a short pass to fullback Mitch Adams. Adams tucked the ball under his arm and just as he turned towards the Houston endzone he was drilled by Texans CB Roderick Lemons. The ball flew out of his arms and Ollie Berzinski scooped it up on the run and raced 95 yards for another Houston touchdown. The score was now 23-17 Titans.

Four plays later with just over 5 minutes to play in the game Tennessee was forced to punt. Houston return man Andy Pinnock gathered the ball in on his own 20 and promptly returned the 80 yards to tie the game. A moment later Bethea's point after attempt split the uprights and the Texans led 24-23. You could have heard a pin drop in Music City Stadium - unless you were standing on the Houston sideline.

On the ensuing kickoff McMillan, perhaps attempting to do too much in an effort to attone for his earlier fumble, was stripped of the ball again and Houston took over. This time Bethea missed a 37 yard field goal attempt and with 1:56 remaining Manfred Gayle and the Titans would have one more chance to pull out a win.

However, Gayle's second pass of the drive was picked off by Berzinski and the Houston defensive back returned it 40 yards for his second touchdown of the quater. The game ended 31-23 and you can bet there will be some big changes in Tennessee after this one. For Houston, you can bet that their first playoff win in franchise history will never be forgotten. It will be much tougher to get the second win as they visiting 13-3 Denver next week.

BROWNS TOP CHIEFS 17-6
The Cleveland Browns won their first playoff game in franchise history by beating the Kansas City Chiefs 17-6 at Cleveland Stadium. 4 Kansas City turnovers, including 3 Ulish Groce interceptions proved the difference in the game. Groce was picked off in the Cleveland endzone twice. In his defense the Chiefs offensive line was dreadful, allowing 6 sacks and numerous pressures.

Cleveland receiver Zach Kruczek, who was second in the league with 106 catches, led the offense with 6 receptions for 104 yards. Cleveland will visit New England next week.

49ERS HAVE NO TROUBLE WITH REDSKINS THE SECOND TIME AROUND
Last week the Washington Redskins clinched a playoff berth with a victory over San Francisco in D.C. Their reward was a rematch with the 49ers, this time in San Francisco. Washington, led by a battered Sammy *Baugh did not have a chance and the 49ers coasted to a 30-10 victory. San Francisco QB Koy Harris threw 3 touchdown passes and passed for over 250 yards. Baugh, on the other, completed just 19 of 42 passes and was intercepted twice. It has been a tough season for the ex-TCU star. Baugh missed 8 games with a broken ankle and reaggraveted the injury last week against San Francisco. He was nowhere near 100% for this game.

WR Benjy Pace was the hero for the winners, hauling in 7 passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns. San Francisco faces a tough challenge next week when they travel to Philadelphia to meet the East Division champion Eagles.

CARDINALS DEFENSE TOO MUCH FOR SAINTS
The Arizona Cardinals beat the Saints in New Orleans 17-10 in the other NFC wildcard game. Tony Marsalis and wide receiver Frank Nickel connected on a pair of long second half touchdown passes to provide the margin of victory for Arizona.

The prize is a date in Chicago against the NFL's best regular season club, the Bears.

NFL ANNOUNCES LEAGUE AWARD WINNERS
AS EXPECTED SID LUCKMAN NAMED LEAGUE MVP
To the surprise of absolutely no one Sid *Luckman of the Chicago Bears was named the National Football League's Most Valuable Player and Offensive player of the year. It was a busy week for the quarterback as he was named TSN's Athlete of the Year for 1946 earlier in the week. Luckman led the Bears to a 14-2 record and equalled his league record for QB rating set last year.

The defensive player of the year was also from the NFC North. Green Bay defensive lineman Mike Smith, who had 13 sacks, was named the league's top defensive player. The announcement came as a bit of a surprise as many felt Ed Newberry of Denver, who set a record with 14 interceptions, who be a lock to win the award.

Dallas Running Back Raymond Cash who ran for 953 yards was named the league's offensive rookie of the year while the top newcomer on the defensive side of the ball was Jacksonville safety Ken Milloy. Jim Jordan of Tennessee won the coach of the year award. These are the awards presented by the NFL itself. TSN will announce it's award winners the week after the NFL Championship game is played.

TSN COMMENTARY - IS GROCE DONE IN KANSAS CITY?
One of football's greatest rags to riches story maybe coming to end. How Ulish Groce went from undrafted scrub to the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs has been well documented but it now appears the Groce era in K.C. is coming to an end.

The combination of a dissappointing exit from the playoffs yesterday in Cleveland and a first round quarterback waiting in the wings may prove to much for the man who was always in the right spot at the right time to overcome.

Groce's arm is legendary. He routinely piles up 300 yard passing days and yesterday was no exception. However, he is equally well known for trying to force the ball into an opening that does not exist and yesterday he got burned for it. Groce was picked off 3 times by the Browns including twice in the Cleveland endzone on first and goal plays. In 17 games this season he threw just 12 touchdown passes and was intercepted 27 times.

If Groce could ever develop the restraint to know when to tuck the ball in and play it safe he could be an allstar. However, after 4 years of trying to get him to develop that skill it may be time for the Chiefs to try and move him and turn their attention to developing Tommy *Thompson. Kansas City desperately needs help at offensive line and on defense. Groce is a loose cannon on the field but you can bet there will be a team somewhere that wants to try and tame that cannon of an arm so this may be the best time for the Chiefs to deal him and address some of their other needs.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL BOWL GAMES
ILLINOIS AND STANFORD WIN IN OVERTIME
All of the big games are being played later today but it will be tough for them to surpass the excitement generated by this past week's college bowl game action.

First on Monday Stanford needed an overtime field goal to beat previously unbeaten Nevada 37-34 in the Harbor Bowl. Senior cornerback Steve Williams had an interception and return a punt for a 4th quarter touchdown that allowed Stanford to force the overtime.

On Saturday there were three bowl games with the most exciting one being the Sun Bowl in El Paso. Western Conference runner-up Illinos needed overtime to stop Texas 23-20. Illini running back Buddy *Young improved upon his draft status by rushing for 148 yards. On the other hand Texas WR Hubert *Bechtol had a rough game and that will likely drop him to the second day of the draft.

Hardin-Simmons finished 11-0 on the season after blasting Mountain States Conference champion Denver 38-6 in the Raisin Bowl at Fresno. Hardin-Simmons, winners of the Border Conference, seemed on a mission to prove to the pollsters they belonged much higher than 18th in the final regular season poll.

The final bowl game of the weekend was the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio. Tulsa spanked New Mexico 38-6 in that one. Tulsa QB Clyde *LeForce is bidding to have a qb from that school go in the first round of the NFL draft two years in a row. LeForce threw 4 touchdown passes including two to senior wideout Camp *Wilson, another possible first round NFL pick. Last year's Tulsa QB Tommy Thompson was selected by Kansas City with the 12th pick of the 1946 NFL draft.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
SCHAYES DRAWING RAVE REVIEWS AT NYU
Nick Stokes has been the head basketball coach at New York University since 1932 and during that time he has coached some great players but he feels sophomore forward Dolph *Schayes could surpass them all. Heady talk when you consider among the players Stokes has tutored include former National College Player of the Year George *Mikan, 1934 National Freshman of the Year Mike Seymour, and former Eastern Independant player of the year Joe *Fulks who is presently tearing up the pro ranks.

"I don't want to put undue pressure on this kid (Schayes)" says the coach who has won 4 conference titles and made a final four appearance, "but he really is that good. And I keep forgetting he is just a sophomore."

After graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, Schayes had offers from virtually every major college in the nation but he decided to stay close to home and play for Coach Stokes. Schayes played in every game last year, averaging 14.0 points and 10.2 rebounds a game and being named to the National All-Freshman team. It was quite a recruiting year for NYU, as guard Slater *Martin (15.1 ppg, 5 apg) and forward Matthew Blake (12.8 ppg, 11.4 rpg) also made the all-conference freshman team. With a 21-9 record New York University made the NCAA tournament but as a 7th seed lost to 10th seed Iowa 85-58 in the opening round.

The tournament appearance gave the three freshman a small taste of postseason play but left them longing for more. Bluechip small forward Earl *Lloyd joined the mix this year and the four youngsters along with senior guard Andrew Rogers have just one goal in mind...a National Championship. Off to a 14-0 start including an impressive 87-66 win over conference rival CCNY on Friday you will find very few people who doubt that this group has the potential to reach it's lofty goal.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE CLEVELAND INDIANS
Every thing went right over the last half of the 1946 season for the Cleveland Indians and they were rewarded with their World Series title in franchise history.

Steve Gromek (26-12, 2.97) is the key to the pitching staff that had the lowest era in baseball a year ago. The 27 year old won his first Cy Young Award and anchored a strong rotation that included Bill Lohrman (19-8, 2.28), Johnny Babich (12-7, 3.29) and Allie Reynolds (15-15, 3.53). All are in their early thirties and will be back next season. Claude Passeau (13-16, 3.47) will be 39 shortly after opening day but he returns to add depth.

Aside from the retirement of 40 year old Gus Suhr (.355,1,2)all the key players from the World Series win will be back. Jeff Heath (.282,14,81), Ival Goodman (.342,15,67) and Taffy Wright (.319,3,38) patrol the outfield. The infield will consist of Mickey Rocco (.304,2,47) at first, Charlie English (.273,1,57) playing second, shortstop Lou Boudreau (.294,4,50) and third baseman Oscar Grimes (.302,18,88). Midseason call-up Clyde Klutz (.231,0,2) is expected to be the everyday catcher.

The farm system is not deep but most of the Indians key players are still in their peak years. Barring some major injuries the Indians will right in the pennant race again in 1947.

1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE DETROIT TIGERS
After a dreadful 1945 season that saw them slip to 7th in the American League the Detroit Tigers rebounded with an 80 win season last year. A lack of pitching depth ultimately kept the Tigers from contending for the pennant last season and there does not seem to be a solution to that problem in sight.

Stubby Overmire (21-14, 3.52), Fred Hutchinson (17-17, 3.66) and Virgil Trucks (17-19, 4.66) are all in their late-twenties and all are decent starters but Detroit is lacking that top of the rotation guy who can carry the team.

The offense led by outfielder Tommy Henrich (.299,23,77) is among the best in the game. Henrich is joined in the outfield by a group that includes Dick Wakefield (.344,4,62), Barney McCoskey (.269,4,41) and Hoot Evers (.320,2,20). First baseman Hank Greenberg (.270,14,89) is slowing down a little at age 36 and could be pressed for playing time by Hal Trosky (.331,6,30)who can also play third. Red Kress (.276,3,54), Joe Gantenbein (.280,5,69) and minor leaguer Joe Wood round out the candidates for starting infield assigments. 32 year old Buddy Rosar (.258,2,62) is a solid major league catcher.

OUTLOOK - The Tigers are a number one starter away from contending. They are a solid ballclub but until they get that ace who practically guarantees a win every fourth day they will be a step below the American League elite.

BOXING BEAT
QUIET WEEK AS WE PREPARE FOR A BUSY JANUARY
The boxing world came to a virtual standstill the week between Christmas and New Years but it is merely the calm before the storm. There are some great fights coming up in January including the World Middleweight title fight from New York between champ Jake Lamotta (14-0) and challenger Tony Zale (35-4) on January 12th. Two days prior to that bout Ezzard Charles (18-1) makes his first appearance since losing the post-war Heavyweight elimination tournament finale to Joe Louis. Charles will fight Tommy Gomez (24-5) in his hometown of Cincinnati in what is expected to be a tuneup for a rematch with Louis.

Next weekend there is little action in the United States but there are a pair of important fights overseas. Two Irish flyweights with their eyes on a World Title shot square off in Belfast. Rinty Monaghan (16-3-1) is favoured over Ed Doran (14-3). In Japan 8th ranked bantamweight Hiroshi Horiguchi (22-12-2) faces Australian Mickey Miller (27-17-2).

ARMY WINS NATIONAL COLLEGE FOOTBALL TITLE
NOTRE DAME WINS SUGAR AND IT'S ROSES FOR MICHIGAN
The University of Notre Dame eliminated all doubt in the final college football rankings by easily handling number 2 ranked Georgia 37-26 in the Sugar Bowl. Had the Bulldogs beaten the Fighting Irish there would have been real controversy as to whether Georgia or Army deserved the number 1 spot in the postseason poll. Instead Army remains number one, a position they have held since beating Notre Dame in mid-season. With the loss Georgia falls to fifth in the rankings.

The other big bowl game saw Western Conference champion Michigan handle hometown UCLA 28-13 at the Rose Bowl. The win moves the Wolverines to third in the year end poll. Michigan's only loss was to Army.

In other bowl games North Carolina completed a perfect season with a 27-23 win over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Tar Heels QB DeMarcus Dickinson scored on a 3 yard touchdown run with under a minute to play in the game. The Tar Heels move to fourth in the final rankings while the Sooners remain 17th.

Pennsylvania beat Arkansas 24-14 in the Gator Bowl. The 9th ranked Quakers suffered their only loss in an 8-1 season to Army. In the Cotton Bowl, Rice overcame a 14-3 halftime deficiet to beat Tennessee 20-14. Finally in the Oil Bowl, Alabama needed overtime to stop William & Mary 17-14.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
MEL OURS LEADS TEXANS TO UPSET WIN IN DENVER
All Star Wide receiver Mel Ours caught 3 touchdown passes to lead the Houston Texans to a surprising 37-13 win over the hometown Denver Broncos. Surprising is not strong enough a word to describe what happened to the team with the best regular season record in the AFC. Despite having the worst passing offense in the league during the season Houston QB Vaughn Diedrick picked apart the conference's best defense for 345 yards through the air. Ours had 6 catches, including the three touchdown grabs, for 110 yards while fellow wideout Art Tasker gained 124 yards on 6 receptions. Ballhawking safety Ed Newberry did have an interception for the Broncos but otherwise the Denver secondary was totally dominated in the game.

Houston got off to a great start as Brad Johnson returned the opening kickoff to mid-field and 4 plays later RB Walt Williams scored on a 2 yard touchdown plunge. After Denver was forced to punt Diedrick and Tasker connected on a 74 yard pass play that would set up the second Houston touchdown - a 1 yard pass to Ours. Before the second quarter was 3 minutes old Ours had his second touchdown catch - an 82 yarder- and it was 21-0 Houston. The Broncos never recovered.

It will be Houston's first trip to the AFC title game.

BROWNS TRIM PATRIOTS 24-20
The Cleveland Browns made the road teams a perfect two-for-two in AFC playoff action by nipping New England 24-20. New England had a 17-10 lead at the half but Cleveland running back Bill Green, forced into action when starter Tony Ellis was sidelined with an injury, scored two second half touchdowns to get the Browns into their first AFC title game.

Green, in his second season out of Miami(FLA) finished the game with a career high 100 yards rushing. In 12 regular season games this year he gained just 288 yards.

For New England it was a case of bad breaks and missed opportunities. Patriots kicker Brennan Armstead missed two third quarter field goal attempts and quarterback Mel Houston was intercepted with 4 minutes to play in the game and the Pats on the Browns 22 yard line. Houston, the third string QB all season was forced into action when Terry Stephens suffered a groin injury on the opening series. Stephens was starting in place of Bob Irvin who was hurt in the season ending win over Oakland.

Speaking of injuries it looks like the Browns will have to rely on Green having another big game next week against Houston. Starting RB Tony Ellis is likely done for the season with an ankle injury.

After finishing with the worst record among the 4 division winners, the Cleveland Browns are presently surprised to have homefield advantage against Houston in the conference final. In Week 8 Houston beat Cleveland 29-23 in overtime on a Vaughn Diedrick to Art Tasker pass play which came after a 50 yard field goal with just over a minute to play tied the contest for the hometown Texans.

The oddsmakers have little respect for the underdog Texans, making Cleveland an early 8 point favourite for next Sunday's contest.

NO SURPRISES IN CHICAGO AS BEARS MAUL CARDINALS 20-0
Sid *Luckman passed for 276 yards and the Chicago defense held Arizona to 149 total yards as the Bears blanked Arizona 20-0 in NFC playoff action. Luckman completed 24 of 41 passes including a 4th quarter touchdown that back George *McAfee turned into a 20 yard screen play. The touchdown finally allowed Bears fans to feel more at ease, as despite dominating the game Chicago led just 9-0 up to that point.

Arizona's offense was non-existant. QB Tony Marsalis completed just 3 passes all day and Tuffy *Leemans, with 75 yards, was the only rushing threat. Safety Frankie Morrall had 7 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble to lead the Chicago defense. Arizona safety Brock Hasselbeck, with 9 tackles was one of the few bright spots for the Cardinals.

The Bears, with the league's best record, will host San Francisco in next week's NFC title game.

SLUMPING EAGLES NO MATCH FOR FIRED-UP 49ERS
After starting the season 9-1, the Philadelphia Eagles dropped 4 of their final 6 games. Make that five of seven as the visiting San Francisco 49ers had little difficulty disposing of an unispired Eagles team 24-6.

Quarterback Koy Harris threw 3 touchdown passes for the second straight playoff game and passed for 241 yards. Stan Newman caught a pair of the Harris td strikes and had 6 receptions in total for 116 yards. Meanwhile the Eagles benched QB Ken Neal after his second interception of the game and gave the ball to Doug Bass, who had missed several games with an elbow injury. Bass did not get picked off but he completed just 5 of 12 passes. Another player who had a subpar game was Eagles running back Harley Mitchell. Mitchell gained a season low 67 yards on the ground as Philadelphia was never able to establish it's trademark running game.

Things get much tougher next week for the 49ers. After beating a pair of slumping East Division teams in the first two weeks they will have to play the defending NFC champion Chicago Bears on the road. It will be San Francisco's first trip to the league title game. Both teams appear healthy and ready to go but the Bears are an early 5 point favourite.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL
NYU, UTEP AND NEW ORLEANS STILL PERFECT
With January upon us and the conference schedules in full swing we turn our eyes towards the teams that have so far managed to remain perfect. Just three schools are sporting unbeaten records at this stage of the season and they are New York University, UTEP and New Orleans.

New York University, a powerhouse in the Eastern Independant conference, beat rival Manhatten and Villanova on the road to run it's record to 16-0. The NYU roster was dicusssed in great detail in last week's issue so we won't go into more detail about them here.

It is no surprise to see UTEP in the list of unbeaten teams. Coach Rick Miller's squad went to the final four a year ago and finished with a 31-7 record. With 5 seniors starting this is an experienced club that is expected to make noise in the tournament again this year. The leaders for the Miners are center Randall Carick and power forward Tamari Braggs, each of whom is averaging over 17 points a game.

New Orleans, on the other hand, is a surprise at 16-0. The Privateers made the NCAA tourney last season for the first time in 3 years but were knocked out in the first round. They have had a relatively easy schedule to start with their only victory over a ranked opponent being a 71-66 win at Middle Tennessee State.

WAKE FOREST PERFECT IN ACC ACTION
With three sophomores in their starting five many expected next season rather than this year would be when the Deamon Deacons mounted a serious charge for their second final four appearance in franchise history. However, for 22nd ranked Wake Forest it may prove to be that the future is now. Ed *Peterson, Jonson Page and Frank *Brien all were recruited in the season the Deamon Deacons made their final four appearance and after suffering through a 12-18 season as freshman they are ready to make their mark.

Page was named the conference player of the week after scoring 40 points and adding 8 assists in wins over Clemson and South Carolina. Maryland guard Brian Conyers was named the top freshman last week.

ANOTHER TIGHT RACE IN BIG 8
With 9 conference titles in past 14 years Oklahoma A&M is always expected to be in the thick of the conference race. Oklahoma, Missouri and Iowa State each have won one title during that span. However, despite A&M's dominance in titles, each year the Big 8 race seems to come right down to the wire.

Iowa State junior forward Jack Cable is making his presence felt in the conference player of the year race. Cable leads the conference in both points per game with 17.0 and rebounds with 15.2. Iowa State, with 5, has had more Big 8 conference player of the year winners than any other school.

Oklahoma forward Joseph Brown was named conference player of the week while Jack *Shelton of Oklahoma A&M was the top newcomer for the past 7 days.

Ohio State is 5-1 but the first place Buckeyes have not been doing things the easy way. Four of Ohio States wins have been by less than 5 points and their only loss was 68-66 at Indiana.

Iowa center Ray *Ellefson has been named Big Ten player of the week. Ellefson had 47 points in two games last week including a career best 32 against Wisconsin on Saturday.

PACIFIC COAST CONFERENCE
Actually two seperate conferences the PCC North and PCC South each receive an automatic NCAA tournament bid and hold seperate conference tournaments.

A last second buzzer beater from Alex *Groza gave Oregon a 65-63 victory at Washington State in the most exciting PCC North contest of the week. The brother of NFL lineman Lou Groza had 15 points and 22 boards in the game. Oregon is ranked 5th and Washington State 9th in the TSN poll.

In the South Stanford upset USC 66-56 on the Trojans home floor. That loss dropped USC from 4th to 7th in the polls.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE NEW YORK YANKEES
After 12 straight seasons above .500 the New York Yankees slipped to 5th place in the American League in a dissappointing 1946 campaign. Injuries and age seemed to catch up to the Bronx crew and with 5 position players over the age of 35 and several pitchers coming off serious injuries things could get worse before they get better.

33 year old Tiny Bonham (25-7, 2.87)had his first 20 win season since his rookie year and made up a lot of the slack created when Max Lanier (17-11, 2.32) and Dizzy Dean (7-9, 2.63) were sidelined. For Dean it was the third straight year he missed at least a month and at age 37 the end appears to be near. Butch Wensloff is just 31 but his career appears to be over before it really began. After a 15-4 start to his rookie season of 1943 Wensloff was sidelined for the season in August with bone chips. Injuries limited him to just 14 appearances the following year and last season he blew out his back in his first start and was done for the year. Jumbo Brown rejoined the rotation last season and went 13-15 but he will be 40 years old in April.

The offense is in a little better shape. Charlie Keller (.258,22,72) had another strong year in leftfield. 39 year old Sammy Byrd (.268,9,74) and 36 year old Dixie Walker (.283,9,74) complete the outfield. 33 year old catcher Bob Scheffing (.287,15,51) won his first gold glove. The infield consists of 35 year old first baseman Buddy Hassett (.243,2,37), third baseman Billy Johnson (.247,10,64) who is the baby of the team at age 28 and 36 year old shortstop Frankie Crosetti (.233,17,67). With Johnny Hodapp's retirement second base is wide open but it will likely go to 36 year old reserve outfielder Calvin Chapman (.253,2,24).

OUTLOOK - With a barren farm system and an aging team the Yankees appear to be in trouble, if not this year then the following season. They just hope they can avoid a stretch like from 1906 to 1924 when they never finished higher than 6th in the American League.

1946 SEASON FLASHBACK - THE PHILADELPHIA ATHLETICS
The bad news for Philadelphia fans is the A's have not won a pennant since 1911. However, this club does have some good young talent and with a couple of smart drafts they could quickly become a contender.

28 year old Bill Voiselle (19-14, 3.53) was acquired at the trade deadline and looks like he could be the number one starter the A's have been missing since Eddie Plank retired in 1916. Heady praise for a third year pitcher but Voiselle was considered to be a potential superstar just two years ago before blowing out his arm. He looks to be fully recovered and the Giants may end up kicking themselves for giving up on him.

Other starters include Ray Scarborough (12-23, 3.81), a 29 year old who deserved far better than his record from last year. The A's are also rumoured to be toying with the idea of moving closer Fred Caligiuri out of the pen and into the rotation. The 27 year old has a live arm and could be an ideal number 3 or 4 starter. 25 year old Bill McCahn, who was 13-5 at AAA a year ago, should also get a long look in the spring.

With starting infielders Did Williams and Pinky Higgins retiring there are some holes to fill. Fortunately, the A's have three very good young prospects. 24 year old third baseman George Kell seems ready for the majors this time around while 24 year old shortstop Bobby Wilkins likely needs another year in the minors. Further away is 22 year old Vern Benson, a natural third baseman who may be shifted to second.

Eddie Morgan (.262,5,45) will likely start at first base with Skeeter Newsome (.295,10,68) returning at shortstop. Kell will challenge 30 year old Dario Lodigiani (.264,6,23) for playing time at the hot corner while Irv Hall (.296,0,6) will likely man second unless Benson is ready. Tommy Heath (.294,8,48) and Hal Wagner (.263,1,36) do a decent job platooning behind the plate.

The outfield includes veterans Roy Cullenbine (.286,12,73) and Chet Laabs (.247,14,76) along with 25 year old Elmer Valo (.269,7,60), who with 5 seasons under his belt qualifies for veteran status as well.

OUTLOOK - No pennant again this year of course, but the A's seem to be heading in the right direction.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
RANGERS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BUSY WEEK
With 5 games in 6 nights the schedulemakers did little to help the New York Rangers but despite the hectic week New York did manage to gain three victories and move into second place in the standings.

The week got started early as New York blanked the Red Wings 3-0 in a New Years Day contest. Church Russell contributed a goal and an assist while Chuck Rayner turned aside all 21 Detroit shots for his second shutout of the season.

The next night in Boston Cal Gardner and Grant Warwick scored third period goals to lift the Blueshirts to a 2-1 victory over the Bruins. New York's defense limited Boston to just 22 shots at Rayner.

On Thursday the Rangers made it 3 wins in 3 nights as Edgar Laprade's third period marker gave New York a 4-3 win over Toronto at Madison Square Garden. Cal Gardner had a pair of goals for the Rangers.

After an off day Friday, the Rangers finished the week on a down note losing to Toronto 4-1 at Maple Leaf Gardens and falling 3-2 at home to lowly Chicago on a last minute Black Hawk tally.

The Rangers are now 5 points behind first place Detroit but three ahead of the third place Maple Leafs. After a shaky starter Chuck Rayner has been outstanding between the pipes and the New York defense led by Bill Moe and Joe Cooper has certainly made Rayner's job easier. Up front the Rangers have two strong lines: Edgar Laprade (6-10-16) centering Rene Trudell (10-8) and Tony Leswick (19-8) on one and a second line with Cal Gardner (15-8-23), Bryan Hextall (10-5-15) and Church Russell (9-4-13).

BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
WASHINGTON AND PHILADELPHIA PULLING AWAY IN EAST DIVISION
The east division is quickly becoming a two-horse race as Washington and Philadelphia are starting to put some distance on the rest of the pack. Between them the two clubs went 7-0 last week and although their styles of play are different, both are getting similiar results.

The Warriors have one philosophy on offense and it is quite simple. Find Joe Fulks for the open shot. The former NYU star forward is tearing up opposing defenses, averaging a league best 23.7 points per game. He is Philadelphia's first, last and only option on offense. Opposing teams know it but they still can't stop him from getting open for the quick jumper. The number two scorer on the Warriors, guard Angelo Musi is averaging just 8.8 ppg.

In Washington, coach Red Aurebach is preaching teamwork and the smooth shooting Capitols have 4 players in double-figures in scoring. Guard Bob Feerick leads the way averaging 18.0 ppg, third best in the league. Guard Freddie Scolari, with 12.8 ppg and forwards Horace McKinney (12.4) and Johnny Norlander (10.4) round out the double digit crew. The fifth starter, center John Mahnken is putting in 9.0 ppg.

While Providence appears to be on the verge of vanishing from the East Division race, the west is still a three time battle as just a half game seperates St Louis, Chicago and Cleveland.

BOXING NEWS
LAMOTTA - ZALE COUNTDOWN CONTINUES
Hype continues to build in anticipation of the middleweight championship fight between undefeated champion Jake Lamotta and challenger Tony Zale (35-4). Next Friday's bout will be the pinnacle of a huge week in boxing which also includes number one heavyweight challenger Ezzard Charles (18-1) facing Tommy Gomez (24-5) in what should be a tuneup for a Charles rematch with champion Joe Louis.

Another heavyweight to keep an eye on is Jack Walker from Columbus, Ohio. The 27 year old improved his record to 20-3 with second round knockout of Belgium's Pierre Van Deuren over the weekend. Walker appears ready to step up into the top 10 of his weight class. On the same card promising middleweight Carl Olson knocked out Spider Belloise to improve his record to 24-8-2. Just 20 years old, Olson suffered most of his losses early in his career when he was overmatched against fighters like Tony Zale and Marcel Cerdan in the post-war elimination tournament. However, the Hawaiian native seems to be a win or two away from perhaps getting a title shot.

In a flyweight contest from Belfast a pair of Irish contenders did battle. Ed Doran improved his record to 15-3 with a second round TKO of Rinty Monaghan. Monaghan who had been rated the 8th best flyweight fighter in the world coming into the fight, falls to 16-4-1 with the loss.

In Tokyo bantamweight contender Hiroshi Horiguchi improved to 23-12-2 with a 5th round knockout of Australian Mickey Miller. Miller's record drops to 27-17-2.

That-a-way TCU. Hopefully they can keep going and pull off a national championship.
