Another Fighter naming puzzle

So was looking at one, Mike O'Dowd who is listed in BoxRec as a middleweight with one fight in 1939 and being from Fitchburg, Mass. He was one of Hub Parker's opponents I found a fight record for that is not listed by Boxrec for Parker.

Sat, Jun 10, 1939, The Brattleboro Reformer, VT - At the Brattleboro Community Hall arena on Friday evening, a capacity crowd nearly saw Hub Parker, 160, of Newport upset Mike O'Dowd, 168, Vermont heavyweight title holder from Fitchburg, Mass. Parker forced the action most of the way but was missing too much with his iwld right handed "haymakers". But he managed to mark up O'Dowd's face with raising a welt under his right eye in the second and opened a cut over the left eye in the third round. O'Dowd meanwhile was not able to produce any major damage to Parker. He did manage to put Parker down twice, once in the second and once in the fourth rounds, but Parker sprang up quickly both times with no counts. In the end, most everyone was probably surprised to see Referee Joe Geninas give O'Dowd the decision in the 6 round contest.

There is also listed in BoxRec a Mike O'Dowd listed also as a MW with fights from 1940-1948 but from NY, NY. I got to wondering if this was the same O'Dowd Parker fought in 1939? Well I've not figured that out yet. But, but I did find is the Parker, O'Dowd opponent would appear to be fighting under that name Mike O'Dowd but his real name being Walter Wazal or Wazel as seen in the papers thus far!! There is a Walter Wazal in BoxRec! Intermingled quite a bit in the articles I've been looking at is the Joe Plouff heavyweight who I noted earlier would appear a bit later years as Armand Roy! Here is what I've found thus far about O'Dowd / Wazal.....

Sat, Oct 15, 1938, Athol Daily News, Athol, Mass - A brief fight review for Walter Wazel, Fitchburg welterweight staging a comback apparently at Brattleboro, VT on Friday night. It said this was Wazel's first fight in a year. Article went on to say that Wazel fighting as Mike O'Dowd sent opponent, Joe Plouff to the canvas four times in th last five rounds of the six round bout.

Sat, Oct 15, 1938, The Brattleboro Reformer, VT - Their account of this fight between Mike O'Dowd / Walter Wazel or Wazal, notes a unanimous decision victory for O'Dowd/Wazel, 178 lbs from Fitchburg, Mass, "becoming heavyweight champ of the Community Hall arena" Friday night taking that title from Joe Plouff, 189 lbs of Brattleboro. O'Dowd with left hooks send Plouff down for eight counts in the third and fourth rounds.

Wed, Nov 02, 1938, The Brattleboro Reformer, VT - Mike O'Dowd, Fitchburg, Mass the article says is "making his first defense of his Community hall title". Not sure what title this speaks of but it goes on to say he "wrested the crown from Joe Plouff of Brattleboro". He is scheduled for a six round fight with Romeo Ducharme, Easthampton. This article makes claim that O'Dowd is a Southpaw.

Sat, Nov 05, 1938, The Brattleboro Reformer, VT - Mike O'Dowd, 168 of Fitchburg, Mass was successful in defending his Community hall title, outpointing Romero Ducharme, 167 of Easthampton in a 6 round bout. A low blow in the sixth round by Ducharme put O'Dowd down on one knee, but the blow considered delivered by accident and the Referee Joe Gelinas stopped the action till O'Dowd recovered to continue. The two judges, Timmons of Millers Falls, Mass and Dr. J.R. Malloy of Brattleboro scored for O'Dowd while the referee called it a draw for a Majority Decision for O'Dowd.

Mon, Nov 07, 1938, Athol Daily News, Athol, Mass - A boxing news roundup article talks a bit about the Mike O'Dowd v Romero Ducharme fight on the Nov 4th. This article claims Mike O'Dowd to be in fact one Walter Wazel of Fitchburg! There is a Walter Wazal, BoxRec ID# 604115 listed with a 3-4-0 record with fights listed from 1937-1940 with his residence in Fitchburg, Mass and that Walter Wazal is a Southpaw as the Nov 2nd Brattleboro Reformer claimed O'Dowd was. Tje Sat. Oct 29, 1938 Athol Daily News briefly previes Romero Ducharme "will fight Mike O'Dowd, better known as Walter Wazel,of Fitchburg." Spelled it Wazel with an "e" this time?

Sat, Dec 03, 1938, The Brattleboro Reformer, VT - Alex Palazzi of Springfield, Mass was slated to take on Mike O'Dowd of Fitchburg a the Brattleboror Community Hall for the Community hall title held by O'Dowd in a 6 round fight, but Palazzi didn't show for it. Joe Mike O'DowdPlouff went in as a substitute. This was a second time the two fought each other with Plouff dropping the decision to O'Dowd who displayed better boxing skills. No knockdowns in the fight.

Those oldtimers changed their names more often than their underwear, it seems. This makes it really frustrating sometimes.

It sure does, but I've actually found it to be an interesting challenge looking at some of these guys. I'm looking back through at this Walter Wazal / Wazel / Wasel or however it is actually spelled and found his name spelled these three different names and put on top of that he's apparently our Mike O'Dowd who fought Hub Parker. So many ways you have to try and search a name in the papers to find articles about them and/or their fights.

A lot of times the venues, newspapers, and even promoters didn't ask the fighter how to spell their name, they just went with what they heard when the fighter said it. That led to considerable variation.

Wazal / Wazel / Watzel / Mike O'Dowd looks like all the same fighter!

Been spending the last couple days digging through articles for info on Walter Wazal as listed by BoxRec. Have pulled quite a bit of info but want to do more digging to accumulate info for all the info to find on the four different names I've been finding for what does appear to be the same fighter. What I found tonight is this.....

Thu, Dec 15, 1938, Kennebec Journal, Augusta, Maine - An article discussion about Vince Troiano of Portland, Maine, mentionse that Walter Wazal is one amongst 7 middleweights mentioned in the article that Troiano has fought and beaten. Found Vincenzo Troiano, BoxRec ID# 048421 and listed in his fights is a 6 round decision win against Walter Watzel (note the spelling!) on Jan 28, 1937. This Walter Watzel, ID# 152852 in BoxRec has 6 fights listed, one of course against Troiano, but more important is the BoxRec notes the Watzel as a southpaw, from Fitchburg, Mass and has an alias. Yes the "smoking gun" confirming I would say Wazal / Wazel / Watzel / Mike O'Dowd are all the same fighters.

I then go to look up that Jan 28, 1937 fight between Troiano and Watzel and the various newspaper pre-fight and fight summary articles all spelled Walter's name as Wazal or Wazel!!???!!! No T in it. So how BoxRec got the Watzel spelling I'd love find out.

BTW.....The Vicenzo Troiano record shows a 10 round Draw with our buddy Hub Parker in Sept 1939. So another piece to look at for him.
Hope I'm not boring yas all with this stuff, but I've found looking through these New England paper records and the fight history in these Mid-Late 1930's kind of interesting. Make me think maybe concentrate for a bit on some of these guys from this time in these New England boxing shows.

Absolutly not, I love it.

You know, I'm also a horse racing enthusiast, and while in most "serious" countries a racehorse can have only one single name, which on top of that has to follow certain rules, this is not so in Paraguay, where I originally come from. In my spare time, I do research for the paraguayan Stud Book, and because in past times, many horses entered Paraguay illegally from Argentina or Brasil, their new paraguayan owners obviously changed their names for a fake one...and oh boy, I spent days searching in newspapers, writing e-mails to farms and foreign stud books, even comparing old pictures or videos to identify certain horses...you have to really love this stuff to do it.

So keep going, these oldtimers need their records completed.

Great story! Thank you for sharing. Yes, I've found myself just loving researching these old boxers and trying to fill in the pieces for them for them as accurately as possible present on BoxRec, not that they who all is involved is already doing a Great job with the database!

Het Rocco what do you have for Jack Sharkey? My game lists him as a 3 and looking at box rec he should be much much higher. a few tidbits from Box Rec World Heavyweight Title
As a result of the controversial decision of this bout, the NYSAC barred any but "boxing experts" (sports writers, referees, judges) from broadcasting descriptions of future matches. Sharkey vs Schmeling Sharkey lost via dq a few bouts prior. Against Young Stribling he won on points and the notes was interesting A heavyweight title elimination bout, arranged by Tex Rickard before his death the month before. Held under the auspices of the American Legion, as required by Florida law. A battle royale of 12 black fighters opened the card and Sharkey took the count of ten after going down from a vicious left hook to the jaw. The Boston sailor had claimed a foul blow to the mid-section just before the climax, but the referee, Jack O?Sullivan, refused to allow it and counted him out. Dempsey?s knockout victory, which sent the crowd into a delirious outburst, followed a slashing, slugging battle from start to finish. The former champion, staggered in the first round and groggy, came back to force the fighting and finally dropped his young rival." (Associated Press)
This was a heavyweight tournament elimination bout, with the winner to meet current World Champion Gene Tunney for a shot at his title.

Walter Wazal or Wazel???

So, I've started a TB25 rating for one Walter Wazal/Wazel. Named it Wazal as I kind of gut feel is what is name is. I've found some information that points in that direction but what I've found for whatever reason the local papers were using both spellings. So before I dig deeper into the professional fights, I'm search for articles in 1934 thru 36 which cover his amateur days while in high school. I found a articles though later in 1942-45 that helps to tie to a short article found in 1926 about a young Walter Wazel and where he lived and how old. Here is what I've found that seem to point to Wazal. But, then also here are the amateur day articles for 1934 and you see that they start out in the year using Wazel spelling then temporarily you get the Wazal spelling but then a last Wazel use in and October article. Crazy.....

The Fitchburg Sentinel newspaper followed as far back as Nov 25, 1930 Walter Wazel as he was named in many of the papers (others did use Wazal), was playing High School Football in Fitchburg. That article happened to note that Walter Wazel was a Sophomore that year. That could put his age at possibly around 15? Estimate a date of birth around 1915.

Fri, Jul 02, 1926 Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Quoting from the paper, "Walter Wazal, 383 Summer Street, Aged 11 years while fishing at Baker's pond yesterday, landed a hornpout measuring 12 1/2 inches and weighing 14 ounces." Based on the street address he's from that matched the family street address in a Dec 1942 article mentioned later in this bio for Walter Wazal, this is our boxer Walter Wazal. This article would place is DOB year also as 1915.

Here is the 1941-45 articles and a 1997 Obit for his brother Joseph maybe help tie things together to the Wazal spelling?

Fri, Feb 07, 1941, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - short article notes Walter Wazel if working as a boxing instructor at the "Y" gymnasium. Some later articles into early 1942 also mention him working instructing boxing.

Thu, Sept 24, 1942 Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - in the Sportfolio column, they comment that Walter "Slug" Wazel, along with a number of other Fitchburg athletes enlisted in the navy, had completed his recruit training and whould be assigned to active duty soon. It mentions Wazel being a former New England Gold Glove boxing champ. It says also Wazel had contributed his services to the Y.M.C.A. as a boxing instructor.

Mon, Dec 7, 1942, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Walter Wazal, 383 Summer Street is listed along with many others currently in the military services. This the same Wazel talked about in the Sept 24 issue?

Tue, Dec 18th, 1942, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Short piece talks about Joseph Wazal, coming home from 3 years of service in the US Army rejoining his family at 383 Summer Street. Says he has two brothers, Walter and George who were recently discharged form the navy.

Tue, Jan 14, 1997, Ventura County Star, Calif - Obituary for a Joseph A. Wazal, Age 80 of Port Hueneme, Died Jan 11, 1997. He was born July 7, 1916 in Fitchburg, Mass. Obituary says he is survived by a daughter, grandkids, sister and a brother, Walter Wazal of Oaklahoma. Appears to be the Joseph and Walter Wazal mentioned being in the services in WW2 from Fitchburg.

Interesting that in these late 1941 and 1942 Fitchburg Sentinels, another Walter Wazel playing high school football is mentioned in football articles. A common name in that neck of the woods? Has to be two different Walter Wazel or the boxer, Walter is spelled Wazal as in BoxRec. Just have not found anything to confirm that or not.

Tue, Oct 30, 1945 Fitchburg Sentinel article on various military personnel being discharged, a Walter T. Wazel "who as recently discharged from the navy after three years service is at home with his wife at 133 Lancaster Street Leominster. Mr. and Mrs. Wazel were formerly of Fitchburg."

Walter Wazal or Wazel???

Started looking into 1935.....

Fri, Jan 04, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - Walter Wazal, Fitchburg is defeated by Walter Marciezyk of Providence in 160 lb class at the Irish-American Club.

Fri, Jan 04, 1935, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - "Walter Wazel of Fitchburg defeated Walter Gardner, Rhode Island in a 3 round bout at the Irish-American A.C. in Boston last evening." "In the final Wazel lost to Johnny Jackson by a decision which was booed."

Thu, Jan 10, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - At the Tournament of the Irish-American A.A., South Boston on Thursday evening includes Walter Marciezyk, Providence, Walter Wazel, Fitchburg and Walter Gardner, Riverside, R.I. in the 160 pound class.

Fri, Jan 11, 1935, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Walter Wazal of Fitchburg knocked out Moe Berg of Boston in the 2nd round in the 160 lb class at South Boston, last night. Wazal then lost to Walter Gardner of Riverside, R.I. in the final.

Fri, Jan 11, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - In the 160 pound class of the Irish-American A.A. amateur bosing bouts, Walter Gardiner, Riverside, R.I. beat Walter Wazel, Fitchburg by decision.

I'm confused some by the Jan 4 Boston Globe account saying Walter Wazal is defeated by Walter Marciezyk at the Irish-American club but then the Fitchburg Sentinel edition on that same date have Walter Wazel fighting Gardner and then johnny jackson?? First thought ok Wazel and Wazal two different guys??

But then a week later on 10th and 11th, 10th Boston Globe has Wazel, Gargner and Marciezyk fighting again at this tournament. Some weekly matches? Then Look at the Jan 11th editions of the Sentinel and the Boston Globe. They discuss the same fight results but Sentinal says Wazal and the Globe says Wazel!! ??!!

Will continue some more on 1935. Still thinking the same fighter just different spellings getting used. Sentinel has used both, Wazel and Wazal.

Walter Wazal or Wazel???

Nothing yet really I can see telling me Wazal and Wazel are not the same boxer. BTW...I'm writing these into the Bio notes for Walter Wazal rating I'm creating so you'll have a pretty thorough record of his amateur and professional career. Like it or not!

Sat, Feb 02, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - Friday evening amateur boxing show was staged in Revere, Mass at the Garfield A.A. in Walkathon Arena. Walter Wazal, Fitchburg knocked out Mello Calagresee, Boston in the second round final of the 160 pound class.

Fri, Feb 15, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - In another amateur boxing show in Revere's Walkathon Arena by the Garfield A.A., the 160 pound class will see Walter Wazel, Fitchburg and Eddie Venetia of Revere. Did not find results.

Thu, Feb 21, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass- Athe the B.A.A. Clubhouse amateur boxing tourney in the 160 pound class, Edward Perault of Spencer beat Walter Wazel by default.

Tue, Mar 05, 1935, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Walter Wazel, Fitchburg defeated Morris Walter Wazal or Wazel??? Berg of Roxbury in the 160 lb class. This was at the Boston Arena on Monday night. Wazel had deated Rudolph Beaudoin of Cambridge in an earlier round fight.

Fri, Mar 15, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - In last night's amateur boxing show at the Irish-American A.C., in the 160 pound class, Walter Wazel, Fitchburg won by default over Ralph Riddle, Wenham.

Tue, Mar 19, 1935, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Walter Wazal lost in the final bout in a tournement at the Elks Club, not quite sure that was location. Does not say who Wazal fought and lost to.

Wed, Mar 20, 1035, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - A short blurb that James Harvey, Whalom road, announced that he is the manager of Walter Wazel and some other Fitchburg fighters.

Fri, Mar 29, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - An announcement on participants for the New England amateur championships being held in Boston, Walter Wazel is included in the 160 pound class. The article mistakenly places Wazel from Dorchester?

Fri, Mar 29, 1935, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Announces Walter Wazel of Fitchburg is to appear at Revere Beach this evening and at the Boston Arena on Monday night.

Sat, Mar 30, 1935, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Announcement that Walter Wazel, Dan Leo and John Amico are entered in the 160 pound class at the New England amateur championships at Boston Arena on Monday evening. Wazel is the only one of these three mentioned in the March 29th Boston Globe article.

Walter Wazal or Wazel???

Tue, Apr 02, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - Walter Wazel of Fitchburg looses to Walter Gardner of Riverside, R.I. in the final for the 160 lb Class in the New England Amateur championships. Gardner stopped Wazel in the 3rd round after Wazel had beaten Robert Conley in the Semifinal bout.
Note that the Fitchburg Sentinel on Apr 02 mentioned that the Fitchburg boxers had not fared so well at the New England championships in Boston the previous evening. "Watler Wazel stands out as one of the best of the 160-pound scrappers in this section."

Sun, Apr 21, 1935, Daily News, NY, NY - Walter Wazel, Fitchburg, 169 lbs was named an alternate on the United States Ring team in the International boxing tourney at Boston Gardens on April 29th.

Fri, Apr 26, 1935, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - At the Elks' smoker (not sure what that means) last night, Walter Wazel, Fitchburg and Joe Perault of Worcester went five rounds to a draw. Perault was landing more frequently than Wazel but most of his blows were of a glancing nature.

Mon,Apr 29th, 1935 Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Meantime, Walter Wazel was pitching for the Fitchburg High baseball team.
Interesting in April no articles in the papers for Walter Wazal!

Sat, May 04, 1935 Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Walter Wazal, 147, of Fitchburg is to appear in the annual state amateur boxing championships at the Boston Gardens starting the coming Monday night. Walter will contend in the 160-pound division.

Sat, May 04, 1935 The Boston Globe, Mass - The State amateur boxing championships will be at the Boston Arena Monday night. One of the contenders is Walter Wazal, Fitchburg. Note the Globe uses Wazal in this article and then Wazel two days later?!

Walter Wazal or Wazel???

Fri, Sep 13, 1935, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Boxing card presented to take place at the Independent Progressive Party Outing Saima Park on Saturday afternoon. Of thof these bouts to be Eddie Carroll of Lowell vs. Walter Wazel, Fitchburg. No results found for the fight.

Fri, Sep 13, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - Announcements for boxers to appear in the second weekly amateur boxing show of the Irish-American A.A. to be held at the Arena Friday night. Included boxer is Walter Wazal. The Sep 13 Fitchburg Sentinal also announced Walter Wazal in this tournament.

Fri, Sep 20, 1935, Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Walter Wazel, Fitchburg knocked out Daniels in 30 seconds in the first round of the Irish-American A.C. tourney last evening in Boston. No other first/last name given for Daniels. Then in the finals, Wazel knocked out Dellsola in the second round. Again, no first/Last name given for Dellsola?

Sat, Sep, 28, 1935 Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Walter Wazal of Fitchburg won in the 160 pound division at the Irish-American show at the Arena in Boston the previous night. He knocked out in the second round his first opponent, Ralph Riddle of Peabody then won decisions 3 rounds each over John Whalen of Boston and Drenner of Boston. No first name for Drenner?

Mon Oct 28, 1935, The Boston Globe, Mass - Walter Wazal will fight in the 160 lb class in the Golden Glove Finals to be held at Boston Arena on Oct 28th night. In the Semifinal bouts, Walter Wazal beat Eddie Carroll of Lowell.

Tue, Oct 29, 1935 The Boston Globe in the Finals, Wazal was defeated by Larry Baker of Dorchester for the 160 pound title. The article describe Wazal as "Chunky"!? There was then a different account of Baker's victory on the same Tue, Oct 29 Boston Globe that used the Walter Wazel spelling. So the Wazal / Wazel were just being used interchanging in these papers with no apparent reason? This second article had a little more detail. Larry "Humpty" Baker was a "long skinny southpaw of Dorchester". Walter Wazel of Fitchburg mentioned was left handed also. Mentioned Baker was 17.

Tue, Oct 29, 1935 Fitchburg Sentinel, Mass - Walter Wazel lost in the finals of the Golden Glove Tournament at the Boston Arena to Larry Baker after having defeated Eddie Carroll of Lowell in the first bout.

Just wanted to say that I found a Walter Wazal Jr. (1945-2018) on Find a Grave. He was from San Diego, CA, though. I did NOT find any match for the name "Wazel".

So I tend to think Wazal is the correct spelling.
