Well, this game was something else.

Also, Goldman had to set a new world record with 11 runners left on base.

2045 - owner goals review ...

I may be done with "owner goals". I've kept it on because it feels like it's "part of the game". But this review, in my opinion, is ridiculous.

* Mesa finally won their division after finishing 2nd 2 years in a row, and advanced to the LCS. Prior to this were six straight last place finishes, and 3 consecutive 5th places finishes before that.

* While I did not acquire a player to improve RF, I did acquire/promote 2 players that served as RF platoon and produced 2.7 WAR (above league average), for minimum salary.

* Owner wanted me to acquire an All-Star ... I traded for CF Juan Gamez, one of the best players in the game, while his former team retained 85% of his 40M salary. Gamez was 2nd in CF AS voting, but for some reason didn't "make" the AllStar team or count as an AllStar. He produced 6.8 WAR (costing the team only 6M) and received MVP votes. At the trade deadline, I acquired the best closer in the game (also a current year allstar), but that didn't count either.

* As far as increased attendance goes, I lowered prices by 1.50 a ticket AND improved fan interest by 10 points with acquisitions. Finished in first place, following 2 second place finishes.

The teams market fell to below average in size, and the revenue generated is nowhere near what one would expect from a team finishing at the top of their division with multiple allstars per season.

Gamez (CF) and Ruguru (CL) were in the last year of their contracts, and of course the fans are disgusted that I let them go in free agency.

When I went to negotiate an extension, here's what Gamez wanted ...

Team budget is 190M, salary cap is 250M.

The team is over budget heading into 2046, and Vargas's inherited contract is killing me. 19M/y and he's probably not good enough to be in the starting rotation, and just as bad in the bullpen. Gomez makes 23M/y and is entering the final year of his contract and nearing the end of his Hall of Fame career.

I may have messed up with 12B JJ Sutton. While he was still in his arbitration years, I checked to see about a contract extension. He wanted a 1y deal for like 16M. Since he was likely to make about that in arbitration, I gave him the 1 year deal, thinking that he would be a free agent after that and not eligible for arbitration. He's still eligible for arbitration and is being rewarded 23-26M/y for the next 2 years, when my plan was to give him the QO, let him walk, put Maxwell at 1B, and get a 1st rd pick when he signed elsewhere.

He got a big bump in arbitration and is also eligible next year. In the meantime, I went to negotiate with SP Chacon and he was asking 30M/y for 6 years. I underbid him bigtime, thinking he surely wouldn't take it 20M/y for 4y ... and I planned to pay for it with the money saved from Sutton leaving in FA and eventually Gomez contract coming off the books after the upcoming season. Chacon took the deal, and my initial reaction was "cool", followed by "uh oh". heh heh.

I could likely "acquire an allstar" and "upgrade RF" in one fell swoop, by trading for a great RF while offering Gonzales, our great young pitcher and our top SS prospect, but we'd take on even more salary while getting worse as a franchise, and being severely hampered with payroll going forward.

The team is likely to lose quite a bit of money in 2046, but is projected to be competitive for the division/postseason.

Anyone have experiences with situations like this and/or comments on whether owner goals are a quality option or not?

At the end of this month I changed how I set the batting lineup. I most often go by player ratings, but I'm going to try going by stats.

So, when I set the June lineup for vRHP, I sorted the season split stats (vRHP) by OPS and the 1-2 spots go to the players that have high OPS, but much of it coming from OBP .... then fill in slots 3-9 in descending order by OPS v RHP ... even if it means a "slugger" might bat 8th. I did the same thing with vLHP.

Like the lineup, I changed from setting the roles based on ratings to using stats.

The team basically has 7 pitchers that could serve as SP. The top 5 lowest ERA will be in the rotation, with the other 2 serving bullpen roles ... and since they'll have pretty good "ratings" as bullpen guys, they'll most often by the setup and closer arm. Waiting for SP to "find it" or statistically "regress to the mean" doesn't seem to work really well ... but I'm hoping some bullpen time might.
