My next project is the mighty Snappers out of Ottumwa IA. This franchise had a decent run around the turn of the 20th-century, playing in many comps including the Mississippi Valley League from 1922-28, its final stint before disbanding, never to return.

Far from ideal conditions for a game requiring well-maintained grass to be played upon, so the richness of minor league baseball in Roswell NM comes as a bit of a surprise. Less so that it has been interspersed with long fallow periods. Of its various iterations, the Rockets moniker is the most commonly-used, although the city's current Invaders club that has been playing in the Pecos League since 2011 can perhaps now lay claim to that honour.

The club was a Pirates affiliate in 1959 and played host to a young future Hall of Fame OF by the name of Willie Stargell.

A quick detour across the southern border to my take on the Mexicali Eagles, one of Mexico's most famous clus - still in existence and I'm sure well-known to all so I'll skip the blurb for these guys.

Just about to do battle with my IRL team Oakland for the 1971 World Series in my long-running Bucs save, so this is hopefully a good omen as we visit the Pirates out of Waco TX, a Pittsburgh affiliate from 1948-56, almost covering the club's entire existence. It played in the Big State League during that time, winning it in 1949 and '54. The latter of these squads was included in MILB.com's Top 100 all-time list.

Little to report about the Orange Pickers out of Porterville CA, who played just the 1911 season in the shortlived San Joaquin Valley League before disappearing. Nearly 40 years later, minor league baseball returned to Porterville with the Packers / Comets franchise that played - again, briefly - in the Sunset and Southwest International Leagues before once again the game left the city behind, this time for good.

Minor league baseball existed for precisely half a century in Springfield MA, with the Ponies moniker most commonly used over that time across numerous leagues in the region. Some big names from the early history of the game can be counted among their playing and managerial alumni, including HoFers Roger Connor, Rabbit Maranville and Dan Brouthers.

We stay in the northeast for a look at the Highlanders out of Peekskill NY, a club that first emerged in the late 19th-century but folded quickly, repeating this cycle twice more in the early 1900s. All was quiet there until just after WW2 when, in 1946, baseball finally returned to Westchester County with a team created to join the new North Atlantic League. Sadly, both club and league barely saw out the 1940s and the city is yet to host another minor league franchise, although they are represented in the Hudson Valley Collegiate League.

Another team from the northeast now, the Hatters out of Danbury CT. This club played in various leagues from that region in fairly sporadic fashion a decade or so either side of 1900. Little else about them readily comes to hand and it is late here so I'll leave it at that for these guys.

A quick stop over in the wild west for a look at the Rancheros out of Santa Barbara CA. A Dodgers affiliate for most of its existence and therefore perhaps most familiar with that nomenclature, the Rancheros only ever played in the California League, winning it in 1941, '48 and '51. Plenty of well-known MLBers played for the club at some point, including HoFers Sparky Anderson, Don Sutton and Dick Williams.
