Special Edition 1881 American League Preview Boston Red Caps Manager: Harry Wright 1880 Record: 50-46 Predicted Finish: 6th The Boston faithful are ready to have these Red Caps be great again after another year without a pennant. Still pundits feel the club is old and lacking as far as keeping up their winning ways. The likes of Al Spalding and Ezra Sutton have been at it a long time and finally George Wright is playing a reserve role. Charley Radburn is an interesting case as a new pitching ace while Jim Foran will look to continue his excellent play. This proud franchise however probably does not have enough. Cleveland Blues Manager: Jamari Arms 1880 Record: 33-63 Projected Finish: 3rd A disastrous season in 1880 for the Blues and the city of Cleveland. Management is trying to ease fears and assure that the club will bounce back in 1881. Tom York and Ned Hanlon make a very strong outfield while Joe Blong will come off a season where he threw the most innings in the league. Arms will be under pressure to get things right but some assume that it is 36 year former MVP and manager Bob Ferguson who is calling the shots on the roster. Philadelphia Athletics Manager: Asa Brainard 1880 Record: 58-39 Projected Finish: 4th How do you follow-up a fairytale season that ended with a title? The A's will keep up their confidence behind 26 game winner Jim McCormick. George Hall has never missed a game for the A's and is back again with his .318 career average while Jack Rowe is blossoming into a nice catcher. Joe McDermott plays first base and pitches making him a unique attraction while another arm, Charlie Guth who won 15 games last year could add to the pitching depth. Doing it all over again wont be easy, but manager Brainard insists there wont be any let up for the Athletics. Worcester Ruby Legs Manager: Shamar Pate 1880 Record: 39-57 Projected Finish: 2nd The last time this club had a bad season they bounced back and won the pennant. Deacon White and Ross Barnes will be back for yet another season as will Bobby Mathews who is back in the rotation. The veterans are promising they have recommited themselves. Young Charlie Bennett has scouts drooling as he hit .381 in limited time last year and Abner Dalrymple is proving to be a fine ballplayer. Frank Fleet has a chance to hit 1000 career strikeouts this season and the all-time leader still has much more to offer at 32. Don't bet against this club showing up much different this campaign. Detroit Wolverines Manager: Joe Kim 1880 Record: 44-52 Projected Finish: 5th New manager and a new city as Detroit welcomes it first big league club. New skipper Jose Kim returned star King Kelly to catcher in his first move making the talented player happy again. Also short stop Sadie Houck is as smooth as it gets at the position and many expect a breakout season. Laurie Reis hopes to find the old magic of his rookie season and he did win 15 games last season. There should be alot of excitement for this club in 1881, and the Wolverines may have the best player in the game. St. Louis Browns Manager: Cortez Chacola 1880 Record: 57-40 Projected Finish: 1st Losing out on the last day of the season should bring more fire to this club. St. Louis finally has a group they can get behind and pitcher John Ward is the darling of Missouri. Ward had a 1.50 ERA and was dominant at times while the Browns defense is superior to most teams. Jack Farrell had a 148 OPS+ last year and is ready for stardom while 21 year old catcher Buck Ewing will get a chance to show his talents and strong arm. The Browns are the favorites to take the pennant by most experts. |

Special Edition 1881 National League Preview Chicago White Stockings Manager: Nick Young 1880 Record: 56-40 Projected Finish: 1st Still considered the class of the league, the Chicago club expects this season to be no different. Nick Young's team came up short to Troy last year but the star studded offense of Paul Hines, Cap Anson, and the unique Ed Pinkham will have Chicago scoring a ton of runs. Tom Healey will be someone to watch as the 27 year old made 32 starts last year and is expected to lighten the load on veteran Al Pratt. Chicago fans are anxious for another championship. Buffalo Bisons Manager: Tim Krikorian 1880 Record: 54-42 Projected Finish: 7th First year manager Kirkorian did quite well winning 54 games last season but did he do it with smoke and mirrors? Fred Dunlap is a legit star at second base scoring 70 runs and hitting 30 doubles. Piano legs George Gore hit .335 and may have the smoothest swings in the game. Buffalo need a repeat of fine pitching with 20 game winner Ed Stratton back at the head of the rotation and Fred Corey who won the pitcher of the year award having won 20 games but few folks feel he can repeat the feat. This clubs seem to be getting alot of disrespect. New York Mutuals Manager: Chris Davis 1880 Record: 45-51 Projected FInish: 4th Big changes in New York as new manager Chris Davis takes the helm of the team with pressure to win. The trade of Ned Williamson left shockwaves through the league and in comes Pud Galvin who has more questions then answers. Cal Mcvey and John McMullin still give this team credibility but can the pitching hold up? Seventeen game winner Mickey Welch will look to team with Galvin but both will need to have career years. Will the loss of Williamson come back to haunt this club? Cincinnati Reds Manager: Frank Barrows 1880 Record: 50-46 Projected Finish: 5th Internal strife seems to be out of the way as the Reds look to fight for the flag again. Jim O'Rourke hit .310 last year with 64 RBI in what is turning into a stellar career. Steve King is back again at 38 years old, he hit .290 last year and plays like someone half his age. Hugh Campbell has put behind him all the bad press even after losing 23 games Will White is still on the roster and George Bradley went 22-9 last year and has won 119 games in his short career. The Reds are a dangerous club if Frank Barrows can get the most out of them and if they can get along off the field. Their fan support is still incredible. Troy Trojans Manager: Lip Pike 1880 Record: 60-36 Projected Finish: 2nd Chicago may have the most wins in the National League but it is Lip Pike's Troy team that has won the most pennants. Troy has teamed Gat Stires with Roger Connor and the results have been dynamite. Connor lead the league in steals and in batting and Stires hammered 13 home runs. Jim Devlin quietly does his work winning 21 games last year and 116 for his career with a 2.55 ERA. Cy Bentley has won 160 games in his career and adds to what may still be the most complete team in the game. Most feel it will be one again a fight between Chicago and these Trojans to the very end. Philadelphia Centennials Manager: Jerimiah Harris 1880 Record: 47-49 Projected Finish: 6th Two big new names are looking to change the fortunes of this lost franchise. George Derby, a 23 year old rookie arm will be anointed as the new star of the club while big Ned Williamson comes from New York with a new attitude and all the skill in the world. Tim Keefe is also back and will surely continue to baffle hitters but as usual this Philly team just may not have enough offense to be legit. Manager Jerimiah Harris did a fine job in his first season, but avoiding a step back and controlling the personality of Williamson will be his latest and biggest challenge. Providence Grays Manager: Alex Segura 1880 Record: 32-64 Projected Finish: 3rd All the talk around Providence is about Big Dan Brouthers. Brouthers has a new manager and has been freed from the doghouse to have a breakout season and create the anchor the club needs. The Only Nolan is back in the game in one of the best comeback stories ever and will get is chance in the rotation. Pat McManus will have to take a bigger step as a top of the line pitcher after losing 20 games last year. The 1880 season as a whole was one to completely forget, and rebound seasons from Fred Cone and Harry Stovey are desperately needed. |

April 1881 Edition 10.2 Mathews Makes It All The Way Back Right Hander Earns First Win In 2 Years One may not believe it, but Bobby Mathews is still only 29 years old. The Baltimore right hander who has thrown over 3335 innings and has the most wins of any pitcher ever to throw at 219 is back where he belongs. After losing 30 games in 1878 and showing great fatigue, Mathews lost another 17 in 1879 and seemed to have started his last game. Mathews was solely in relief duty last season but he never complained and silently waited for another chance to start. The Ruby Legs had a poor year overall but it was an offseason meeting with manager Shamar Pate that once again opened the door. Pate this last winter made a commitment to the old guard like Barnes and White. He needed their buy in and leadership for the rest of the team to respond. Mathews was invited out to the home of the manager where he bargained with the skipper to make him the third starter. This spring Mathews looked stronger then ever and was given the chance to start his 384th career game. Mathews took the mound at Boston and it was like time stood still. He threw nine innings allowing only one earned run and striking out six. The club won the game as teammates congratulated him and even opposing manager Harry Wright had nothing but good things to say. In the same game it truly was like old times, as Ross Barnes had two hits and drove in three runs. Now Mathews has his role back and dont look for him to give it up so easily. There are rumors he wants to get as many as 250 or even 300 wins in his career. Who would bet against him? Definitely not the fans who have followed him for so long and now are satisfied that he is back where he belongs. Brouthers Legendary Clout Providence First Baseman Becomes Legend The game of baseball is built around a good amount of myth and exaggeration. Sometimes however facts are as good as fiction and a moment at Buffalo's Riverside Park this month has the nation buzzing. Dan Brouthers is not a small man. He stands at 6 foot 2 and is likely 210 pounds of muscle. Brouthers can intimidate at the plate and last years outstanding pitcher, Fred Corey of the Bisons, was in such a spot in the 6th inning. With full count and a man on, Corey reared back and sent over his best fastball. The next thing people remember is a motion and then a thunderous clash. Soon the baseball could be seen going far over the right field wall and into a river where boaters wondered if there was rain. The fans were in awe as Brouthers rounded the bases. Of course it is impossible to know exactly how far the ball travelled, but up to this point no one has even come close to the river, as locals say the stream is at least 500 feet away from home plate. "It was super human" said manager Alex Segura, "good gracious is that a strong man." Last edited by Nick Soulis; 08-14-2024 at 10:35 PM. |

May 1881 Edition 10.3 Pabor's Fate Shakes League Chicago Ball Player Injury Could Have Been Worse ![]() Charlie Pabor is one of the most beloved ballplayers in the Chicago club. Charlie was the club managers through some challenging years but was an integral part to building a winning culture. At 34 years old, no longer a manager, Pabor has lead by example playing with smarts and experience. However on May 24th the league and this man's fate were put on the line. Batting against Providence pitcher The Only Nolan. Pabor dug in with a couple of men on base. The pitch came in high and tight and before the batter could react, he was hit on the side of the head and went down with a thud. Players and security ran onto the field as the player lost consciousness and word for a doctor in the stands was the immediate cry. The game had seen nothing like this before. With pitchers now throwing overhand and throwing harder then ever, batters only have split seconds to react to a pitch. Hitters are having to adjust to a different type of game, and older lads like Pabor may not be used this kind of hardball. Pabor was taken to a nearby hospital in Chicago and at first many feared the worst. After hours of contemplation by Doctors, Pabor finally opened his eyes and seemed to gain his wits again. With his teammates by his side, the Brooklyn kid began to improve and communicate. His recovery however should be a long one. One has to wonder why the Chicago club has been such a victim of bad fortune over the years. First the great fire that displaced them in 1871, then the freak accident that befell Cap Anson in the offseason a couple of years ago, and now the injury like no other on the field. "I think our trials just make us stronger" says team leader Paul Hines. "We are all pulling for Pabor to return to the field and kick this thing." Others around the league are raising concerns that the game may be nearing a dangerous level. Some are calling for new rules and pitch restrictions, while others are just calling this a one off accident. Regardless of all the side noise, Chicago and the league can be very grateful that this great baseball man will see another tomorrow for him and his family. Sore Arm Could Mean End For Star Britt Way Out Of Sorts At Only 25 The 1874 Outstanding pitcher in the game Jim Britt was pulled for yet another game by his manager Harry Wright in Boston after his arm discomfort continued and now appears to be chronic. Britt threw only 60 innings last season and this year after only four starts, has an ERA of 5.97. In his heyday was among the best stories in the league getting his first start at only 16 years old. In the near future Britt just kept on getting better winning 98 games in five years including a 22-8 record and a 1.96 ERA in his award winning year. Britt was also a major part of the 1875 championship team in Boston and it really appeared that the Brooklyn native was on his way to setting new marks in the game. Two years ago however Britt just couldnt keep his stamina and his pitches were just not as crisp. Many assured him that the discomfort would go away but nothing seemed to work including work in the offseason. Britt never gave up but it is clear that this season the arm just doesn not seem to have anything at all left. Maybe he started too young, and maybe he can be a lesson for others. It is truly a sad thing to see a great talent fall off at such an age when he should be at his very best. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 09-07-2024 at 12:00 AM. |

June 1881 Edition 10.4 Anson Voted As Most Popular National Poll Gives Insight In Nation's Favorites As one travels from city to city it is quite easy to see who the locals call their heros. On a much larger scale when it comes to a national identity, it is much more shadowed on who the nation admires most. This very publication last month asked fans from all across the nation to rank their favorite ball players discluding anyone from their local teams. The results brought some insight on just how very popular the National Pastime has become. With over 500,000 votes being mailed in since April, the nation really stepped up with their very best choices. The top choice across the nation was the Chicago star, Cap Anson. With Chicago being such a successful side it really shouldn't come as a shock that Anson received over 27,000 votes with many siting his impressive comeback to the game after a serious off field incident. Second on the list was Gat Stires of the Troy Haymakers. Stires also shouldn't come as a surprise as fans love to come out a see the bog hitter take his cuts and hit the ball a country mile. Joe McDermott of the Cincinnati Reds and Dick Hunt of the Boston Red Caps also came in strong on the list with Jim Foran of Boston rounding out the top five. The older legends of the game didn't seem to do as well which means that the majority of voters were likely youngsters. Also absent from the top spots were the pitchers, as fans seem to take particular liking to the swinging stars. Ward Pitching Politics Young St. Louis Star Seen At High Places Good times in St. Louis as the Browns look to win their first pennant this season and currently sit in first place. John Ward is a big part of the team and at only 21 years old he has 44 strikeouts this year and a 2.86 ERA. Still his work on the field has taken a back seat to the publicity the young man seems to be earning off the field of play. St. Louis Mayor William L. Ewing Ward was seen on at least of couple of occasions having supper with city officials including St. Louis Mayor William Ewing. Ward is barely old enough to have a drink, but his personality and business sense at such a young age has made an impact. Ward is said to resemble Boston legen Albert Spalding in his acument for more then just baseball. |

July 1881 Edition 10.5 The True Home Run King Thirty One Year Old Stires May Be At His Best The Troy Haymakers are in the midst of yet another excellent season lead by their one of a kind manager Lip Pike. The franchise keeps finding a way to win year after year and through all of its success, a mainstay has been the power and slug of Gat Stires. There was a debate of late who the greatest power hitter in the game was. Dan Brouthers of Providence recently came on the scene and hit a legendary home run earlier this season. Ed Pinkham of the White Stockings is another favorite choice for this claim as the 34 year old has 51 career home runs and hit a record setting 22 in last season. Still many can say that Brouthers is still unproven and the Pinkham has the aide of the shortest fence in the entire league. When all is said and done, no man has had the power consistency of Stires, and this season may be his best effort yet. Stires is slugging a career best .619 and has already hit 12 home runs, only one behind his career best of 13 and it is only August. He will really have to turn it on to ge to the coveted 22 season record, but fans see an experienced hitter who knows how to produce the wallop. With the cloud of his home stadium a reality for Pinkham, many have said that this is truly the best power hitting season they have ever seen. "It all comes down to leverage" said Stires, "I just have an uppercut that few can duplicate." When asked if he is the best slugger in the league good old humble Gat has a typical answer, "that young lad from Providence is pretty darn impressive. Most HR One Season Journalists and fans the nation wide will without a doubt be following Stires for the remainder of the season to see if he can approach 20 home runs. In the meantime the Haymakers just keep on winning and will likely lift their 5th league pennant. Cleveland Enjoying a Turnaround Club Has Put A Tumultuous 1880 Season Behind Them ![]() The Cleveland club has won only one pennant in their history since the league started and to add lost out on the pennan by a single game on two other occasions. To be competitive however was something the Blues had been committed too until last season when the club lost 63 games and many accused them of giving up or losing without a fight. New manager Jamari Arms has had a different approach and he also has been brushed aside by many after his many losing seasons as manager of the St. Louis club. Arms and his men have proved almost everyone wrong however in 1881 going from last in the league to a club with much competence and confidence, even if they are 6 games out of first. Candy Cummings has found a new birth to his career going 13-5 this season after losing 24 games last year. The 32 year old veteran has added even more movement to his 'curve' pitch, a pitch many give him sole credit of inventing during his younger days in New York. Old Bob Ferguson is still getting the job done at 36 years old both in the field and at the plate as the former MVP is hitting .303 at the top of the order. Wes Fisler another aging veteran also seems to have alot left to play for, the inspirational team leader has 21 RBI and is hitting .280. It is always good to see surprises in the game, and even if many feel this Cleveland club is just too aged to fight for the flag; baseball has become fun again in Cleveland Ohio. August 1881 Edition 10:6 Another Lost Summer Proud Game In New York Remains Afterthought ![]() The state of New York gets most of the credit for inventing the modern game of baseball and legendary clubs like the New York Gothams and the Brooklyn Atlantic club have left a lasting legacy. The city and its story had a set back with the Brooklyn club stopped operating and never could make it in the new profesional National League. Now the Mutuals, who have a rich history of their own, threaten to become another the anchor mediocracy. The club did win the championship in 1874 behind the legendary play of Cal McVey as both a hitter and a pitcher. McVey is still on the roster and still playing well as a hitter, but the results from the team have been far from championship like. In fact over the past four seasons, the Mutuals have finished an average of 16 games out of first place and currently sit 16 games out. The club made its blockbuster move in the off season trading Ned Williamson for starting arm Pud Galvin. Although Galvin has pitched fairly well, he holds a 8-14 record and continues to hold the reputation that he cant win the close ones. Williamson for his part in Philadelphia has stole 48 bases and clubbed 22 triples this year. Even a resurgence of Candy Cummings hasn't helped the club that would surprise no one if they finished in last place. New York of course is the most populous city in the nation with the most press and the lack of results is a constant reminder for a team and an owner that are growing weary. In his first year as manager, Chris Davis has tried to stay positive, but hasn't found an easy way to score runs and compete. Yet another enthusiastic spring has turned into a frustrating summer. The league itself would love to see success in New York, it would seem it would be best for everyone for the good of the game. Whatever the case, nothing of note will be happening in New York in 1881. Pittsburgh Making Case Steel City Said To Be Next Big League City As the nation continues to evolve thanks to the railroads and new industry, population shifts on the map create new opportunities. Any big city that really wants to be recognized wants a pro baseball team to call its own. In Pennsylvania it has always been Philadelphia that has dominated in almost all aspects. Now however the city of Pittsburgh and its booming steel industry have create a modern britling city. The city mayor Robert Lyon just took office and has made it known to team owners that Pittsburgh is ready and able to host a club. "There would be no better home for a sports club of our national game" said Lyon, "we will provide every resource including a ball field and this offseason I will be personally making my claim. Other cities likely in the running for a new or a relocating club include Louisville, Milwaukee, or a second team going to New York or Brooklyn. The evolution of the game and the business continues off the field. |

September 1881 Edition 10.7 Call Of Duty For Greason Twenty One Inning Complete Game Deserves Praise When a team is well out of the pennant race and is simply playing out the string, there are usually two types of players. On the one hand a player may take it easy not risking injury and coasting to the end of the season. Then others play with a sense of pride to finish strong and give the fans their money's worth. Then, as we found out, beyond the two types is John Greason, who put on a fused determination for the 35-51 Detroit club. On August 30th Greason and the Wolverines hosted the Cincinnati Reds. As has been the case most of the season, Greason and the Detroit club blew a three run lead in the ninth inning and the home fans let their club know how they felt. At the moment, Greason heard the fuss by his own spectators and turned to them saying, "I wont leave this park until we show you all and beat these Reds." True to his word the left hander kept on throwing and throwing even long after his counter starter George Bradley left the game after 11 innings. Detroit manager Jose Kim contemplated taking out his starter but Greason made it known clearly, that he was not going to stop throwing in this one until the final out was called. "A pitcher must finish what he has started, "said Greason after the game, "that is the pride of the position I am in" It took almost 6 hours and 21 minutes as well as 268 pitches before it was finally over. In the 21st Bill Lennon singled and King Kelly scored after a bad throw. Player and spectators immediately sought off Greason and carried him on their arms as many said the hurler could barely lift his arm. It truly is these acts of heroism that make the game as great as it is. Most of the country had their eyes everywhere other then Detroit where a last place club played another game. But what happened here on a human level says alot of the pride these young men take in the game of baseball. Matthews Scores Another 20 Worcester Legend Now Has 237 Wins ![]() For the 8th time in his career, Worcester starting pitcher Bobby Mathews has won 20 games in a season. He has the most wins of any pitcher in history with 237 and has now thrown over 3500 innings. Mathews has done all this and has not even turned 30 yet. After talking his manager into getting back into the starting rotation this season, Mathews and his club as a group had a resurgence and even now with a month to play sit in second place just 3 games back. But Mathews has truly refound his form after winning zero games last season and his consistency as a starter in this league likely wont be seen again. October 1881 Edition 10.8 St. Louis Celebrates First Pennant Seven Year Itch Ends For Brown Stockings ![]() They came within one single game last season but lost it in the most heart breaking way. The 1881 season was a year they would not let it slip away under any circumstances as the city of St. Louis finally can claim a pennant as their beloved Browns lead almost wire to wire. Their were occasional rushes to the top by Worcester and Cleveland but the Browns never really looked concerned. With the champion Athletics falling off surprisingly this year and teams like Boston having their worst record ever, the American League was there for the taking. Manager Cortez Cachola in his third season has brought his experience as a bench coach in Chicago reviving the franchise with fundamentals and confidence and the recipe has worked like a charm. It is a testament that any franchise that can find the right man can really turn around their fortunes in a hurry. Team pitching has been the biggest reason the Browns won 57 games. Fred Goldsmith had to remember and the right hander has been among the best arms in the game over the past three years. He won 22 games and lead the league with a 1.85 ERA and a 4.6 WAR. The name everyone recognizes is that of John Monte Ward who at just 21 years of age lead the league in WHIP and OBA winning 18 times and reminding many of a young Albert Spalding on and off the field. The hitting is nothing truly special but the chemistry in the lineup works as the double Jacks in Glasscock and Farrell have a reputation for getting the big hits. Another young star at catcher, Buck Ewing is also someone to watch as the stout 22 year old has gotten better and handles the defensive side of the ball with great proficiency. St. Louis now can poise themselves for a World Series battle with the mighty men from Troy. The franchise won their record fifth pennant this year and look for their second championship. A Last Place Finish For Boston May Be End Of The Line For Wright Age and reputation can only take you so far in this game, and the Boston Red Stockings lead by their famous manager Harry Wright have proven this fact. The proud Boston side had their worst season on record losing 57 games and finishing in an embarrassing last place. It is now a major question if Harry Wright will be retained as team skipper as many feel his loyalty to his players is getting in his way. Ezra Sutton has played in 885 consecutive games but drove in only 31 runs despite is league leading 51 steals. George Wright is ready to retire and Al Spalding can no longer start but is used in situational roles with limited effect. Jim Foran and Dick Hunt remain fine player and the emergence of starter Charles Radbourn can not be ignored, but the core of the team obviously appears frustrated at some of the older strategy and approach; the game has changed alot over the past few seasons. Wright was asked about his future and he acknowledged the season was 'embarrassing' for the club and that he will be sitting with team owners to determine if 'they even want to see his face back.' The game really has turned on its head it would appear with the Browns winning the pennant and the Red Stockings finishing dead last. |

World Series Edition Troy Finishes Job In Walk Off Fashion Final At bats In Three Games Difference In Series Everyone enjoys a walk off win, but when it comes in a World Series it seems to be all the more fantastic. The favored Troy Trojans walked off three different games in this series including the series clincher to become champions of baseball once again. With the series tied at one, Jim Snyder hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to score the winning run in game three. In game five Roger Connor singled in the winning run in the 10th scoring Tom Foley who had doubled to lead off the frame. The most dramatic comeback came in game five when the Trojans won it all. The home team was down two runs heading into the 9th when they started a rally and Elmer White hit a game tying double and it was William Bestick who would later score white on a sacrifice fly that would sent Haymaker Ground into a frenzy as the winning run scored. "As the games were in the balance late, our belief in each other is what came through. I am so proud of the boys." said manager Lip Pike who wins his second championship. The Most Valuable player of the series could have been any number of players but the honor goes to Jimmy Wood who drove in five runs and became the first player to win the award twice. Troy are worthy champions and arguments can be made that this franchise has been the most successful the game has ever seen. |

November 1881 Edition 10.9 End Of An Era Wright Is Out In Boston As expected by many, the biggest name in the history of the game as an innovator and force in the formation of the league has been let go by the Boston Red Caps. Boston suffered an embarrassing season and the worst in their history finishing in last place at 39-57 bringing great ire by he fan base. It was Wright however who was a three time manager of the year. Beyond that, Wright lead the club to three pennants including a 1875 championship that still brings back evidence that that club may have been the best there was. Even beyond this, Wright lead Boston before even the league was created and was an influential force in gathering the best talent in the nation to legitimize the league when it was formed in 1871. Wright at first was a player also with his star brother George Wright and such legendary names like Albert Spalding and Ezra Sutton. He won 488 games with Boston and the team even with their past season still holds a .551 winning percentage. "There are no hard feelings, "said Wright upon his exit, "the lads deserve better and a change had to be made. Thank you for the memories Boston." At only 46 years old there is great speculation that a new club will savor the services of Wright as their manager including the two new formed expansion teams. Still the man has not decided if he wants to go on managing again or if his long tenure in the game has been enough. In any case the game and especially Boston are obligated to Wright and deserve to show him the respect and dignity he deserves upon his exit. MVP Decision Sparks Debate Closest Race On Record Snubs Chicago Star In the first of its kind, a real debate on who the best player in the National League was this past season has erupted around the league. The MVP award has been fairly clear cut throughout the history of the National League and the voting press has never really been tasked with a tough decision. This season two stars emerge as worthy candidates and as the rules state and the vote showed, it was close to impossible to choose a winner. Cap Anson of Chicago has come a long way to once again be considered what is likely the best pure hitter in the game. Anson finished the year batting an even .400 to lead the league with 167 hits and 40 doubles. He also lead the league in RBI with 87 and no one was better in the telling stat of WAR where he finished at 5.7. Many saw Anson's season as one of the best since the Ross Barnes/Deacon White days a few years ago. In Troy of course is the prowess of Gat Stires and his ability to overpower his opponent. Stires hit 17 home runs this year, second of all time for a season, and he still leads the alltime home run total with 65. Stires slugged .648 with a league leading 1.061 OPS scoring 95 runs and finishing with a 4.7 WAR. Stires has been a star in the league for a while and many felt compelled that finally the Troy masher should be recognized with an MVP award. The most telling factor in the end of course had to be the team performance factor. Chicago did have another winning season but it was Troy who finished ahead of them and of course went on to win the World Series. A winning side has alot to do with a winning vote it would appear. Stires received 9 first place votes in the end to 6 for Anson. It was the type of debate that only garners more interest in the game and that many have passionate loyalty to. No one in the future will take their MVP vote for granted, that is for sure. Also no one can argue that both men are outstanding gentlemen and likely both deserve the award that only one can win. Here were the final voting results: Major League Shuffle, Baseball Adds Two Clubs Boston To NL And Three New Cities Emerge It was rumored all season with the continued great success of the league. Both the American and the National league worked together with endless negotiation to realign the league and expand the scope of its teams. First the Boston Red Caps were moved from the American League over to the National, all this coming days after the departure of their manager Harry Wright. The move was anticipated as the league wanted Boston to enjoy strong league rivalries with both Chicago and New York. Another existing club, the Philadelphia Centennials were finished with sharing the city with others and found a golden opportunity out West. The Centennials will move to Pittsburgh and be renamed the Allehenys for the great river that runs through the city. The anticipation for the move could not be greater as Pittsburgh has long been lobbying for a club and now their long awaited dream per say has come true. Finally two brand new clubs join the American League in two cities that the league has been to before. The Baltimore Orioles have returned as the great baseball city will represent itself well. Louisville Kentucky is also back as their new side, "the Eclipse" will take the field expanding the national pull of the game. To accommodate the new teams and fill their rosters, the league will hold an expansion draft next month as eah current club can only protect 12 players each. It will be fascinating to watch the new rosters form themselves before opening day dawns. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 11-25-2024 at 08:29 AM. |

Best Nine Of 1882
Catcher - Charlie Bennett - Worcester Ruby Legs ![]() Coming into his own from the shadow of Deacon White, Bennett put up a 5.9 WAR season and was chosen best at a very competitive position. Bennett did strike out a leading 65 times but he hit 12 home runs with 75 runs and was among the best defensively. He a late bloomer to the position. First Base - Dan Brouthers - Providence grays ![]() Immense strength and a magnificent eye produced a breakout season for the former pitcher. Brouthers was picked over Cap Anson because of his age and athleticism. The 23 year old hit .370 with 10 home runs, 70 RBI, and 24 stolen bases. Fans come from far and wide to see Big Dan take the plate and scare opposing pitchers straight off the mound. Second Base - Dick Hunt - Boston Red Caps The hit king did it again leading the league with 134 hits and 83 runs scored all for a last place club. At 34 he still has the bat speed and know how to get on base and his defense and intelligence of the field still make him among the very best. He is a .360 career hitter and has put up 33.3 WAR during his career. He also has a 161 OPS+ over 10 seasons. He surely is the most popular player in New England. Shortstop - Jack Glasscock - St. Louis Brown Stockings ![]() Pebbly Jack is the best glove at the position in the game and was a major reason why the Browns took the pennant. He positions himself perfectly and has quick dependable hands to all angles. His hitting is modest as he lead the league in atbats but has only a 98 OPS+. Still just about any manager in the game would love to have Jack on their side. As he turns 25, look for his bat skills to ascend to a higher level. Left Field - Ed Pinkham - Chicago White Stockings ![]() After an MVP season Pinkham took a bit of a step back but still is considered one of the best bats in the league. He has 52 career home runs but opened eyes with a league leading 28 triples last season. He also was walked the most times proving the respect he holds. Pinkham has driven in 705 runs in his career and has no plans of slowing down in his age 35 season. He has 29 WAR in his 11 year career. Center Field - Paul Hines - Chicago White Stockings ![]() Hines has taken much of the blame for the Chicago season that came up short. Once considered the best talent in the game, Hines has not improved over his dominant early years but his peers still feel he is among the most talented players in the league. A .335 career hitter with 226 steals and 733 runs scored over 10 seasons, Hines has plenty more to offer for a club that has had a bit of a shakeup this offseason. Right Field - Gat Stires - Troy Trojans ![]() The MVP of the league helped his club win it all last year and Stires is having the best stretch of his excellent career. The big man lead the league in slugging and of course home runs. He also hit .328 which was the highest mark of his career. Stires isnt fast and has a suspect glove but more then makes up for it at the plate. Above everything else Stires in a competitor like few others and seems to find a way to win at any cost. One of the the now most popular players the game has seen. Pitcher - Fred Goldsmith - St. Louis Brown Stockings ![]() Leading the league in wins and ERA, Goldy is a fearless pitcher who wants the ball in the biggest of games. He has pinpoint control and a WAR of 0.87 keeps the bases clean. This was a pitcher who lost 28 games a few years ago but his hard work and stubbornness have paid off for himself and his pennant winning club. Many names could have been chosen here, but 1881 was Goldmith's season to be rewarded. |

December 1881 Edition 10.10 The Expansion Draft Causes Stir Legendary Names Join New Teams In New Season ![]() ![]() With two new clubs coming in from Baltimore and Louisville, each existing team was only allowed to save 12 players each before the new sides could pick who they would like to represent them. Most all teams kept their promising young talent leaving a number of legendary players, who may very well be past their prime, to be picked for the start up cities and franchises. Lousiville is a proud baseball city full of history and dedication to the game. The new Eclipse will field a team that will be lead by two of the most notable pitching names in all the game. The Eclipse picked up Albert Spalding from Boston and Dick McBride from Chicago to head up their rotation. Two names and personalities that have left an undeniable mark on and off the field of play. In what could be an even more significant move, the club also picked Mickey Welch who at 22 year old could be a star in the making. The city welcomed their new stars including John Radcliffe who will play short stop and William Bestick who will do the catching. Malik Felton will managet he side as a new manager who will test his skill for the first time, although McBride is said to be a major factor in helping run the club. In Baltimore George Wright and Levi Meyerle are more there to tease the fans and welcome the game back to Maryland more then anything else as neither ha played much of late. However Sam Weaver and George Bradley are two component pitchers while Tommy Beals was stripped from Chicago and knows how to win. Fred Waterman is another household name and a young spry rookie by the name of Charlie Comiskey should get to play right away at first. Jeremy Parker gets a chance to manage after years in Washington and Worcester as a bench coach. There is good anticipation on what the 54 year old can do with this roster. Parades were already scheduled in both cities and opening day, as well as the one in Pittsburgh for the Alleghenys, should be something to enjoy and behold. Browning Leads Crop Of Talent New Era In Boston Leads With Hype For Kid The Amatuer draft in the game also happened this month amongst everything else. The big name everyone is gravitating too is a short stop from Louisville that was drafted first to Boston, 20 year old Pete Browning. Browning has been called a sure thing and one of the best talents to come into the game since King Kelly. We have seen that talent doesnt mean anything if the right situation and mindset it taken. The hotbed and expectation of Boston wont be easy, but the Red Caps who join the National League, are looking at a new dawn with new manager Charlie Pabor taking over. Jimmy Wolf an outfielder went second to Buffalo and James Burke was the first pitcher taken by the Athletics. Thats all for now, Happy Thanksgiving everone! |

Edition 11.1 1882 American League Preview Cleveland Blues Manager: Jamari Arms Ball Park: League Park Record Last Year: 52-44 Projected Finish: 2nd The defending champions didn't exactly come out as strong last year but still were in the upper half of the league and competitive. Thirty seven year old George Zettlein comes back for yet another year as team ace at the age of 37 but is flanked by a good rotation in Joe Blong and Candy Cummings. The outfield is talented as Ned Hanlon and Tom York welcome aspiring rookie Ed Swartwood to try and get the club back to the top. Most everyone expects the Blues to be right there in the end. Philadelphia Athletics Manager: Malachi Thomas Ball Park: Oakdale Park Record Last season: 40-56 Projected Finish: 4th Asa Brainard resigned from his position as manager only one season after winning it all. The loss will be significant as unproven Malachi Thomas now has to find life in this roster. The club has gotten a bit older and has not stocked up well on youth to their detriment. One young star is George Wood who hopes to take a big step this year while Jim McCormick is still playing well both ways but had a bit of a down year on the mound and the Scotsman will look to rebound as team ace this season. The arrow may not be pointing up for for this club. Worcester Ruby Legs Manager: Shamar Pate Ball Park: Agriculture County Fair Grounds Record Last Season: 53-43 Projected Finish: 3rd The old guard has proven to be as good as ever. Ross Barnes was surely comeback player of the year hitting .289 with a 3.9 WAR. Deacon White hit .307 at 34 years old and Bobby Mathews is now team ace once again after winning 22 games. Add all this to Charlie Bennett and Frank McCarton who have become legitimate stars and the Ruby Legs have the belief that they can win it all again. They look to become the first franchise to win the title 4 times. Detroit Wolverines Manager: Jose Kim Ball Park: Recreation Park Record Last Season: 40-56 Projected Finish: 5th Per his own request, King Kelly is moving to third base as it is said that the 24 year old star is frustrated at losing and has his patience wearing thin. Sadie Houck should team with him well at short while many expect Honest John Morrill to take a step forward this year after hitting .309 with 43 doubles. Guy Hecker is a true talent and at age 26 is also ready to break through on the mound. Just to be competitive would be a major step for this club, falling behind the two expansion clubs would be an utter disaster. St. Louis Brown Stockings Manager: Cortez Cachola Ball Park: Sportsmans Park Last Season Record: 57-39 Projected Finish: 1st Buck Ewing is moving from catcher to third base in what is an eye opening move for the defending pennant winners. Ewing was probably the best defensive catcher in the league. The club still remains immensely talented with Jack Glasscock and Jack Farrell playing sensational defensive ball. The pitching also returns stronger then ever as Fred Goldsmith is poised to have another big season and Harry Salisbury is set to join the rotation with an array of new pitches. The team with the best arms, best defense, and best stadium looks to lift another flag this season. Baltimore Orioles Manager: Jeremy Parker Ball Park: Newington Park Last Year Record: None Projected Finish: 6th Sam Weaver won 27 games once and was 1878 Outstanding Pitcher of the year. After a few lost seasons, he now looks to lead a new Baltimore team to respectability. The offense will struggle as Tommy Beals and John Glenn have to play roles they haven't done so before. Two intriguing rookies will start right away in Charlie Comiskey and Sleeper Sullivan. On the Baltimore bench are also legendary players like Levi Meyerle, Clipper Flynn, and George Wright. Newington Park will surely be full as the club tries to make a permanent stake in Maryland for years to come. Louisville Eclipse Manager: Malik Felton Ball Park: Eclipse Park Record Last Year: None Projected Finish: 7th Experts aren't buying the high profile rotation of Al Spalding, Dick McBride, and Mickey Welch, but the Kentucky fans are sure loving it. The city cant wait to see Spalding take the ball on opening day and even the Irishman Tommy Bond who won 27 games in 1877 is on the roster. Hitting will be another thing all together as there is very little talent to speak of. John Radcliffe is a name you may have heard of while Leach Maskrey will be the best prospect they have who will play in right. Charlie Hodes will play a big role on the club more for his leadership and two championship experience with Philadelphia. |

Edition 11.2 1882 National League Preview Boston Red Caps Manager: Charlie Pabor Ball Park: South End Grounds Last Season Record: 39-57 Projected Finish: 3rd A true new era has dawned in Boston as the club moves from the American League to the National League without their founder and famous manager. After their worst season, Charlie Pabor jumps away from Chicago in a high profile move and steps into the caldron of Boston. Sensational rookie Pete Browning will have all eyes on him and the hype that has followed him. Remaining stalwarts are Dick Hunt and Jim Foran, but it appears that Ezra Sutton will finally step aside after 11 years. Boston expects a quick turnaround and the arm of Charley Radbourn will surely play a defining role in the effort. Can Boston get it right without their father figure Henry Wright? Everyone in the game wants to know. Chicago White Stockings Manager: Nick Young Ball Park: Lake Front Park Last Year Record: 53-43 Projected Finish: 1st They are the favorites in what seems like every season with the same stars like Cap Anson, Paul Hines, and Al Pratt. Anson especially is coming off oof what may have been his best season and is the perfect portrait of a star in our league. Still there remains a feeling in Chicago that this team still hasnt done enough and should win more championships as a group. The thorn in their side has been the Trojans and Chicago fans expect there to be more of a fight this season. Bill Gleason, a bright young shortstop should also garner a lot of attention for this team. Buffalo Bisons Manager: Tim Krikorkian Ball Park: Riverside Park Last Year Record: 39-57 Projected Finish: 7th After things looked up in 1880, the club fell flat on their face last season and try to scramble to find answers. A big reason for the fall was the regression of Fred Corey who was the best in the game but lost 19 games and didnt seem like himself. Alot of offseason work will be done to get him right. George Gore also had a season where he fell back to earth but most expect his natural hitting skills to get back on track. Joe Sommer is said to be ready to shine in his first season as a regular while 19 year old Louisville kid Jimmy Wolf is the shining new toy in right field. Manager Tim Krikorian will be on the hot seat this season for a club that has not made its mark on this league. New York Mutuals Manager: Chris Davis Ball Park: Union Grounds Record Last Year: 44-52 Projected Finish: 4th Brooklyn has embraced the Mutuals as their own despite the name but the results have not come. Curious to say the least that this team let go Mickey Welch who had a load of promise. Pud Galvin is still the arm that hasnt broke out yet and Irishman Tony Mullane will get his first real shot to shine this season. The offense remains strong with Bill Boyd and John McMullin excellent players. Old reliable Cal McVey is still getting it done on a daily basis as he lead the league in runs last year with 98 while stealing 30 bases. McVey is truly one of the very best to ever play this game. Fans and press are hoping for more but most experts see the Mutuals finishing in their customary middle of the pack finish. Cincinnati Red Stockings Manager: Frank Barrows Ball Park: Bank Street Grounds Last Year Record: 52-44 Projected Finish: 8th The pennant win in 1879 not withstanding, the Cincinnati team and fans are getting anxious for more. The legendary club however isnt being favored my experts and many say a rough season lies ahead. Jim O'Rourke and Orator Shafer remain two of the best outfield players in he game and Hugh Campbell is coming off an award as the leagues best. Still the club has not improved much in many areas, does not play infield defense well, and has a big deficiency at the catchers position. Dale Williams did have a nice season with 18 wins and the famous Will White returns to the starting rotation. Troy Trojans Manager: Lip Pike Ball Park: Troy Ball Club Grounds Record Last Season: 63-33 Projected Finish: 2nd They have the highest budget in the league now at $38,000 dollars and are determined to keep winning. The champions come back in 1882 with almost the exact same side that won 63 games last year and made Chicago look second class. Pike has been the master at getting the most out of his talent even when others didnt see it. Jim Devlin and Cy Bentley are two of the more unappreciated arms in the game and they will return to win again this year. Tall Stump Wiedman is the next arm in line to become a star going 12-4 in 15 starts last year. Gat Stires is at the height of his popularity and powers coming off an MVP season while switch hitting Roger Connor had 48 steals and hit .341, he is just 24 years old. No one would blink an eye if this team does it again and becomes the first team to repeat as champions. Pittsburgh Alleghenys Manager: Jerimiah Harris Ball Park: Exposition Park Record Last Season: 49-47 Projected Finish: 5th A state of the art new ballfield called Exposition and a city that is growing and perfect for a new club to call home. The new Pittsburgh side hopes to compete right away with Larry Corcoran and George Derby leading a rotation the needs to be strong. George Knight is one of the only late inning closers in the game but is better then anyone when a tough out is needed. Then there is draft pick 20 year old John Clarkson who has insiders excited to what he can bring. Other now feed that Ned Williamson is ready to break through and have his career year at 24 years of age; he is one of the best defensive 3rd basemen in the game. Pop Snyder is a fine catcher but the lineup lacks the pop and slugging it may need to score runs in bunches. In any event, this will be a grand season in Pittsburgh. Providence Greys Manager: Alex Segura Ball Park: Messer Street Grounds Record Last Year: 43-53 Projected Finish: 6th Providence seems to be overlooked every season and until they win something it should remain the case. Stll the club is fortunate enough to have one of the very best players in the game as Dan Brouthers has blossomed into an overall star putting together a 4.7 WAR season and seems to be only getting better. Fred Cone and Jim Whitney join new rookie Bid McPhee in a lineup that will need to support Big Dan. Jim Whitney is the hope on the mound as the 24 year old is working through command issues but has the potential to break through. Providence is surely hoping for a leap and a winning record this season. |

April 1882 Edition 11.3 The Spectacle Of Opening Day League Begins Second Decade Of Play ![]() A league started off modestly in the corners of a New York luxury hotel, now claims most of the nation's attention as the professional game of baseball has entrenched itself into American culture like freedom and apple pie. What other nation has a competition as grand as this one that last for 5 months and has countless people of all ages rushing to the paper lines to see the results of their beloved clubs? This season the schedule has expanded to 113 games per team and there is a story at every turn on every day and on every swing. It all begins with an odyssey of hope and innocence in April when the parks open their gates and the parades lead the players to the diamond to begin play and open the season. Opening day is a marking of the end of the cold, and the beginning of life and bloom that is spring. Opening day is indeed a joyous occasion. In Troy the champions opened their season looking to be the very first to repeat. They welcomed the new Orioles to a full house and they raised their pennant. On this day the finish would not be sweet at the Baltimore side walked away with a shock win 12-10.In Chicago Ed Pinkham hit a long home run and the White Stockings did what they do best and that is winning. Tom Healey pitched a three hit shutout and spring had arrived in Chicago. Albert Spalding took the mound and threw the first pitch for Louisville as they opened against The Buffalo side. Spalding battled and pitched well but the Bisons found a way to spoil the opener winning it in 11 innings. In Pittsburgh it truly was a magical day as a full house watched their new team win a marathon of 15 innings when a passed ball scored the winning run over Providence. A flag also went up in St. Louis as Sportsmans Park was full on a perfect afternoon. Buck Ewing proved his poise and worth with a 3-3 day and 2 RBI in the Browns win over the Athletics in what looks like another promising season. Cincinnati and New York also opened with wins while Boston opened in heartache in a late loss in their first game without Harry Wright. Who really knows what the rest of the season holds as it sits like an unfinished novel, waiting for you to turn the pages of drama. Welcome back baseball, it was a long winter and we dearly missed you. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 12-08-2024 at 12:06 AM. |

May 1882 Edition 11.4 Dare To Finally Believe In Cleveland? Blues Off To 21-9 Start As City Rallies Behind Them It has been written about them in the past only to have enthusiasm fall by the wayside. The Cleveland baseball club has only one a single pennant in their history in the league and in turn have many other putrid seasons that have made local fans endure. Things in 1882 could not have brought a better start as the club has won 21 of their 30 games including a 12 game winning streak. At the center of it all is manager Jamari Arms. Arms was a forgotten man in his days managing the St. Louis where his team never achieved a winning season. When he came to Cleveland last year many wondered why he was chose to turnaround this team. Arms lead them to 52 wins last season and seemed to be a great motivator for a team that didnt have anything to play for. Now with a season under his belt, Arms seems poised to lead and take this team to the next level. A level that few Cleveland followers have ever experienced. Club pitching has been excellent as this group have performed much better then anyone expected. Thirty seven year old George Zettlein was left for dead as a starter but now is putting together yet another fine season fooling batters with his array of pitches. The Charmer is 7-2 with a 1.48 ERA. Along side of his is Joe Blong who had lost his way for a couple of seasons since his years of dominance but now has settled in again and looks like the pitcher that won 27 games in 1878. Blong is 7-3 with a 2.44 ERA and alot of confidence. Both men credit manager Arms with getting them to believe in their abilities. The offense has scored the most runs in the American League with centerfielder Ned Hanlon leading the way. Hanlon is hitting .356 with 24 RBI and 23 runs scored. After an up and down season last year, the 24 year old looks set for success and could be a diamond in the rough this season. Ed Swartwood and Wes Fisler also are contributing in a nice way, and teams are not looking forward to facing this lineup. The city is optimistic on what they see as League Park has been full most of the spring. Now banners are going up around the city as the eternal hope remains that this season will finally be the one for a championship. No one will argue that the man in charge, the oce discarded skipper, is the right man for the job. Enthusiasm Refuses To Wain In Louisville Kentucky Club Manages Only 3 Wins The spectators for the Kentucky derby were out in force this spring and local fans had hoped that the same enthusiasm could be chattered about about the new ballclub after two months of the season. In the preseason names like Albert Spalding and Dick McBride had brought much attention to the startup. A win in their second game brought some enthusiasm but the club fell off a cliff shortly after. They would win only two more games for the next two months and the cheers soon turned to worry and discontent. The stars shine has faded and the reality of a very very competitive league has set in. The offense has especially been meek, scoring only 61 runs in that span and not a single player with over 10 runs or 10 RBI. The defense has also been something to worry about. Manager Malik Felton has taken it all in stride, "We have the best fans in the country. In time wel will surely play better and give them a much better product on the field; and that starts with me." |

June 1882 Edition 11.5 Boston Surging With Big June Excitement Builds As Fans Flock To Park Ho hum, the Troy Trojans find themselves at the top of the National League as June comes to an end and they are the odds on club to win their 6th pennant. Some clubs are daring to dream however and the old guard of the Red Stockings of Boston has opened some eyes as they finished the month winning nine games in a row and went 15-5 in the month. Rookie Pete Browning has settled in very well hitting fourth in the order with 32 RBI and a .312 average. It is Jim Foran however who is really playing at his best as the often overlooked 34 year old knows what Boston baseball is all about and is hitting .359 with 40 RBI thus far. On the mound Old Hoss Charley Radburn is impressing fans with his charisma and guile but it is Mike Golden who is now 12-5 as a starter and has found his form. "Some of us remember how could it used to be here" says hit king Dick Hunt who is hitting .344. "winning was everything and that same feeling is back." The climb in the division of course will be a difficult one, but the calls out of South End Grounds can be heard again and no city embraces winning more then Beantown. The Master Of The Switch Connor Does It All For Champions ![]() Everyone knows about the robust play and nature of Trojans star Gat Stires who once again leads the game in home runs and RBI. Everyone also knows about the excellent manager Lip Pike who is a former star player but now leads his team with precision and effectiveness. Beyond the hype however, maybe the biggest reason the Trojans are so good is their 25 year old first baseman who is also an innovator of the game. Others have come up with the idea of 'switching' sides when you come up to hit in order to confuse the pitcher and create a visual advantage. The issue has always been consistency as most men who tried struggled mightily batting on one side or the other. Not until Mr. Connor proved it could be done with relative ease, has the tactic gained more momentum. Much like Candy Cummings with his curve ball, Connor proved that depending on the arm that the pitchers throws from will depend on the side the hitter will hit. The results are stunning as Connor lead the league in batting in 1880 and is now a career .347 hitter. Connor has been the support Stires has needed and has taken his game to a new level this year batting .407. Connor is also a specialist on the bases with 86 stolen bases and almost 200 runs scored in three seasons, 48 this year alone. "My manager was a great encouragement" says Connor, "when I arried here I was struggling and he encouraged me to keep at my craft and do something that hasnt been done before." This kind of faith has lead to success including the championship last year and much the same this year. Troy has become the modern school of innovative and winning baseball. |

July 1882 Edition 11.6 Thirteen And Counting For Browns St. Louis Surges Into First Place In Summer Heat Summers in St. Louis can be difficult to bare but nothing makes the faithful more comfortable then winning baseball at Sportsmans Park. After winning 57 games last season and a pennant the Browns started off this year with lethargic play and quickly found themselves in the middle of the pack in what many feared was a return to a sorry past. July however had a different tale to tell as the Brownies won 15 games in the month and finished things surging with 13 straight wins, the most in franchise history. St. Louis is 22-11 at home and have an impressive 2.14 team ERA, best in the league. Fred Goldsmith was the most outstanding pitcher of last season and he looks even sharper this year with a 1.68 ERA and a 175 ERA plus. He has really cemented himself as likely the best pitcher in the American League. Harry Salisbury and of course John Ward also are having fine years as Ward just won his 80th game of his career at only the young age of 22. ![]() Goldsmith Buck Ewing has made a good adjustment moving to third base and driving in 41 runs while Jack Glasscock continues to make amazing plays at short stop and fields his position like few have ever done before. Pebbly Jack has also stolen 35 bases for a club that leads the game in that department with 145. Surely the Browns are wanting to finish what they couldnt last season losing in the World Series. They have wrestled past Worcester and a slumping Cleveland team and seem determined to win the pennant at the very least again. Sportsmans Park surely is the nicest venue for a ball game anywhere in the country, and the team that calls the palace home, is now the hottest team in the nation. "Lets finish what we started" says manager Cotez Cachola who recently won his 200th game as a big league manager. McBride Finds His Way Back Home Philly Legend Makes Emotional Return To Athletics ![]() Glory days are indeed hard to forget and a beloved figuire who once brought a championship to a city was welcomed home saving him from a season of complete futility. In 1872 Dick McBride was the manager of the Philadelphia Athletics as well as the best pitcher in the league. McBride lead the club to a championship, the only one in Athletics history creating a legend in the process. McBride kept pitching well for his team but was relieved of his manager duties as the team failed to repeat as winners. McBride left the team in 1879 to go to Troy where he would win another championship even if his roles were reduced. The Athletics would win in 1880 again without him and McBride appeared to be a forgotten man. Before this season the 34 year old was introduced to a new ballclub in Louisville and looked like he had a real chance to revive his career alongside Albert Spalding. Things however could not have gone worse for the right hander as the team struggled and McBride carried a record of 1-21 which truly became an embarrassment for him. Local fans began to whistle at him and his name surely was dragged into the mud. Seeing the debacle in Louisville, Athletics owner Mike Doyle remembered his former manager and went out of his way to trade for him and bring him back east. An emotional McBride returned to his original team and took the mound to a roaring ovation as his city embraced him. These are the good stories of the game which lie in loyalty and reverence for the human side of things. His best days are truly behind him but a player of McBride and his past influence deserve a proper sending off. "Dick will always have a home in Philadelphia" said current manager Malachi Thomas. |
