Well the Mariners clinched and the Sacramento Kings are now the major sports franchise with the longest playoff drought. Time to see if the Mariners can go up to WC1 instead of WC3 and host 3 wild card games in Seattle.
I think the Mariners WC game rotation should be gm1: Castillo gm2: Gilbert gm3: Ray Last edited by monkeyman576; 10-01-2022 at 04:47 PM. |

Congratulations, guys! The walkoff clinch last night was pretty exciting. (And a decent way to wash away the Mets, but that's for other threads.)
Hoping you can move up at least one notch (because breaking the streak means more if it isn't by dint of a playoff spot that didn't exist all those years, and because that likely means a 1977-expansion faceoff with the Blue Jays) and hopefully two, both to make the achievement 2001-compliant, and because the team deserves some home games. (And I'd be amused at Canada changing the rules to accommodate the Jays, only for Toronto to end up hosting exactly zero games. I'm petty like that, sometimes.) |

The Mariners are officially playing the Blue Jays in the wild card series starting Friday. I think the Mariners have a good chance at making a run with their pitching and defense. If we can get some production out of JRod, France, and Suarez then we should do well.

For fans in Western Canada, this is a dream series. Of course the Blue Jays are Canada's only official team, but many fellow Canucks resent them for their center of the universe attitude. For that and various other reasons, including geography, a lot of fans out west have adopted the M's as their team of choice.
All of which should make this a very interesting matchup for bragging rights!

JFC, this playoff game (I'm watching on delay) is a Classic example of Great Moments in Broadcasting:
• After Raleigh homers to put the Mariners up 3-0, Dave Flemming says that under the new system, "this is a best-of-three; there's not a lot of time for waiting around." Really, Dim Dave? Because I'm pretty sure that last year 4 v. 5 was a best-of-one. So the Jays are in a much better place than they would have been. (Neither Jessica Mendoza nor Tim Kurkijian. bothers to point this out.) • Tim talks about the Mariners' lousy batting average, that the only post-season team with a worse BA is the 1906 White Sox, who hit seven homers all year long. It is instantly clear that Flemming has never heard of the (I would have thought) famed "Hitless Wonders". He seems surprised to hear that stat, says "obviously a very different time" and moves on. No citing the nickname, no mentioning that they upset the 116-36 Cubs (the team with the best record ever) in the World Series, no linking the 1906 Cubs with the 2001 Mariners and their failures after winning 116; he doesn't even say "Deadball Era". Ignorant buffoon. Especially pathetic given that calling ball games is his job. Giants fans must want to vomit when Birdbrain takes over for Kruk & Kuip or even Jon Miller. Talk about from the high to the low… • When Jarred Kelenic steps to the plate, all three announcers fall over themselves kissing his butt, rather than calling out his godawful 55 OPS+ . Tim says that Kelenic used to freak out because he would see that .150 batting average on the scoreboard and he'd get tense, but they all agree that he's been much better since coming back from the minors. Tim talks about all the line drives that Kelenic's been hitting in batting practice. So…if Kelenic has been improving, how has it affected his stats? Well, he's raised his average all the way from .150 to… …wait for it… … .141. Gee, I'm pretty sure that's going in the wrong direction. Perhaps he's adopted the Davey Lopes strategy? (When he was in a terrible slump in 1981, Lopes joked that he was trying to get all the way down to .000, so he could start over again.) And yes, Kelenic singled. But come ON. .141 is pathetic in a way that nobody has been since 1969. (Ironically, that was Ray Oyler hitting .135 for the Seattle Pilots.). Get your tongues out of his bum, you bums. Sheesh. Kelenic closed the season on a 1-for-23 "tear". Perhaps he was saving all those "line drives" for BP? ETA: The ESPn graphics department sucks, too. They put up a graphic showing the Jays' success since changing managers, and list the ex-manager as "Charlie Montoya". TWICE. That's "Montoyo", you dim bulbs. Sheesh. This falls under the "dont count your chickens" category in Toronto.

I'm thinking Bru merely wants the Astros to suffer. At least, that's the buzz.
Fun game to watch, in a car wreck sort of way. I'd been saying that for the $43 million the Mets wasted on Scherzer, they could have had Ray and Gausman (who are making $21,000,000 each), so it was cool to watch them face off. The battle was to Kevin…but the war went to the M's. Great Moments in Broadcasting: when the Mariners took the lead, Kurkijian told us that this was only the third time a team had wiped out a 7-run deficit in a post-season game. Tim cited the previous occurrences (Red Sox rally in 2008, A's come back from 8-0 against the Cubs in the 1929 series), but it's clear he's just reading off his tablet: he has no idea that what made the 1929 game (Game 4 of the World Series) special was that the A's wiped out that 8-0 lead by scoring 10 runs in the 7th inning. Most famous 10-run inning ever, I'd have thought. (I used to know the entire inning by heart: Bing Miller singles to start, Joe Boley makes the first out and the last, after the A's bat around, and the climax comes when Hack Wilson loses Mule Haas's fly in the sun for a 3-run inside the park "homer". [This assumes Hack wasn't just hung over, of course. As with the story about him and Casey Stengel and Boom-Boom Beck, when he was with the Dodgers, later on.]) But, even though Tim has been a baseball writer for decades, he doesn't know that story. Dave Flemming, of course, wouldn't know the difference between Jimmy Foxx and Jamie Foxx. Sigh. But congrats on history, Mariners! You'll be forgotten by the Dave Flemmings of the future, but so it goes. Last edited by Amazin69; 10-08-2022 at 11:05 PM. |

That was such a beautiful comeback for the sweep! I love how the Toronto fans thought they were home and cooled out, only to wind up snatching defeat from the jaws of victory! It couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.
![]() I'll be sure to remember this series for a very long time.

Yeah, that's about it. Honestly, after reading about the accomplishments of the young Guardians team, I don't think the Yankees are going to get past them.

You’re right, the cheating scandal is totally forgiven! Still I like the Ms chances in game 2 with Castillo and if we win that we have home field advantage.

Look. I'll say this once, here. Yordan Álvarez obviously did not cheat. His team cheated, five years ago. Some of us have a long memory and the stink still lingers.

Yeah it sucks when your team hasn’t been in the playoffs in 21 years and another team gets there by cheating.
