#AL - Bill James and Cum Posey Divisions

Original selections: Doug Radar, Dick Allen, Pinky Higgins.

It's a pretty clear top three right now, with one change from the above. Not only has Kansas City's Albert Pujols forced himself into the conversation, he may be the starter for the AL, with a 303/365/514 line.
Chicago's Allen and Los Angeles' Radar are holding steady, Allen at 278/335/512 and Radar at 306/362/505. Each of them match Pujols' 9 homeruns, and Radar has 54 RBIs.

Higgins of the New York Gothams is still in the conversation, he's just fallen a bit off the pace with an OPS of .830.

None of the contenders are very good with the glove, with Higgins especially not showing much skill with the leather at the hot corner. But the best gloves in the league--Detroit's Jimmy Collins and Baltimore's Harlond Clift--aren't hitting anywhere near enough to make it.

The AI picks Radar and Detroit's Bob Bailey, but Bailey has spent only 44 innings at 3B, playing most of the time as a DH.

So, Pujols, Radar, and Allen it is.

#NL - Effa Manley and Marvin Miller Divisions

Original selections: Scott Rolen, Buddy Bell, Mike Schmidt.

Not much has changed in the NL: Portland's Bell (312/382/540 with 10 homeruns) is head and shoulders above the rest, and Philadelphia's Rolen (279/353/492) solidly behind him. But after that, it gets difficult.

Brooklyn's Ron Cey, with an OPS just over .800, is the next best hitter. But Miami's Manny Machado and the New York Black Yankees' Schmidt are contributing a lot more defensively. Machado and Schmidt's OPS' are roughly equal, in the .780 range.

I continue to just have more faith that Schmidt will get hot, so we'll keep going with him, but it really is likely to come down to which of those has a good rest of the month.

The AI shares the dilemma, picking only Bell and Rolen.

#AL - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

Original Selections: Duffy Lewis, Frank Robinson, Don Buford.

With Los Angeles' Buford sliding slightly, this is really down to a pool of four: Baltimore's Robinson and Chicago's Lewis along with the House of David's George Stone and Detroit's Oscar Gamble. Here's how they compare:

Gamble: 268/388/536; 14 HR; 43 RBI
Lewis: 310/354/619; 17 HR
Robinson: 319/397/529; 12 HR
Stone: 322/413/539; 10 HR

Lewis is on a tear and currently the dominant choice to start. The other three are virtually indistinguishable and perhaps Baltimore's overall performance combined with Stone's very poor defense provides the difference, making the final selections Lewis, Robinson, and Gamble.

The AI selects all four and adds Jimmy Sheckard of the New York Gothams. Sheckard has a good argument: 306/412/477 with 42 runs scored.

#NL - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions

Original Selections: Babe Ruth, Rico Carty, Roy White.
The New York Black Yankees' Ruth is the clear starter. Beyond that, though, it's gotten a little muddy. Brooklyn's White has slumped, and even his great defense can't make up that ground.

That leaves Philadelphia's Carty, who has been rock-solid all year with an OPS over .900 and tied for the league lead in doubles. So he's in.

The third spot probably goes, right now, to Homestead's Rick Reichardt, who is hitting 302/391/450, and is the only other LF with an OPS in the .800's.

The challenge here is really San Francisco's Pedro Guerrero and the Black Yankees' Albert Belle. Both of them have hit well enough to warrant selection, but neither have played enough for me. Belle has been seeing more time in the field lately, so there is a chance he slides in, either directly or as a "utility" choice.

The AI selects Ruth, Carty, and Belle.

#AL - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

Original Selections: Willie Mays, Reggie Smith, Jim Wynn.

The New York Gothams' Mays is the clear starter, with an OPS just shy of 1.000 and great defense.

The next three are hard to separate: Memphis' Smith and Houston's Wynn are joined by Kansas City's Willie McGee. All 3 have OPS' around .875 with similar power numbers. Wynn leads the trio with 25 steals, and Smith has the best defensive numbers, so maybe we go with those two. But that could change over the next few weeks.

So, I would take the same three as before, while the AI only selects Mays and Smith.

#NL - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions

Original Selections: Eric Davis, Bobby Bonds, Bobby Murcer.

Everyone keeps waiting for The Black Yankees' Davis to fade. Hasn't happened yet: he's tied with teammate Babe Ruth for the league lead in homeruns with 19, leads the league in RBIs with 59 and has stolen 28 bases without being caught for good measure.

He's the starter.

By OPS, Portland's Murcer is actually outhitting Davis, 1.033 to .928. Murcer's defense is very suspect, but he clearly belongs. The final slot should go to San Francisco's Bonds who has picked up right where he left off after an injury, slashing 331/382/577.

The AI also selects Brooklyn's Duke Snider and his 13 homeruns in addition to Davis and Murcer (it selects Bonds as a RF as well).

#AL - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

Original Selections: Ted Williams, Joe Jackson, Stan Musial.

Nothing has changed from the original discussion. It's all about sorting through Memphis' Williams, Chicago's Jackson, Kansas City's Musial, and Detroit's Ty Cobb. In the first preview, I was able to use Cobb's fewer innings played as the differentiator; now that's no longer an issue. So, how do you decide between

Cobb: .958 OPS
Jackson: 1.054 OPS, 14 HR, 45 RBI
Musial: 1.012 OPS
Williams: .920 OPS, 12 HR

Cobb has still played less than the others, but Williams' recent mini-slump is an issue. At the end of the day, all four should make it, but keeping it to three, right now I would have Jackson as the starter, with Musial and Cobb.

The AI picks all four.

#NL - Effa Manley & Marvin Miller Divisions

Original Selections: Ron Blomberg, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle.

San Francisco's Jackson's run at the triple crown makes him the obvious starter in this group: a 1.134 OPS will tend to do that. That slides him ahead of Cleveland's Blomberg, but his 13 homeruns and 1.054 OPS keep him as a selection, for sure.

The final spot is harder to assign. Miami has very few bright spots, and Jose Canseco is one of them with an .828 OPS. If he ends up being the Cuban Giants sole representative, that wouldn't be too horrible. But the Black Yankees' Mantle has outhit Canseco, with an OPS roughly .030 higher. And, Indianapolis' Oscar Charleston continues to linger on the edge of the conversation, with an OPS at .800 and the best defense in right field in the league.

Currently, I would stick with Jackson, Blomberg, and Mantle, but I think that could change. The AI selects Jackson and Blomberg, along with Bobby Bonds, who made it as CF in our selections.

#AL - Bill James & Cum Posey Divisions

The AL has two players deserving of selection who haven't played much in the field, Detroit's Bob Bailey and Chicago's Frank Thomas. Thomas has an OPS over 1.000 and Baily is slashing 318/395/526 for an OPS of .921.

The AI selects them both (Thomas at 1B, Bailey at 3B).

There is one clear selection here--the New York Black Yankees' Lou Gehrig who has a 1.033 OPS,

Philadelphia's Gavvy Cravath should be considered as well, slashing 314/348/521 for the stars.

But, if pushed, I would just take Gehrig at this point (the AI selects Gehrig at 1B and does not select Cravath).

#Game One: Dave Righetti @ Lefty Grove

Despite a few superb outings, New York's Dave Righetti comes into this game with a losing record (3-4) and a poor ERA (5.43). San Francisco will start one of the more dependable arms so far in the league, Lefty Grove, who sits at 5-2 with a sparkling 3.23 ERA.

Derek Jeter led off the game against Grove with a grounds-rule double, but was left stranded at 2B. San Francisco's leadoff hitter, Rickey Henderson, walked and, as he is wont to do, stole second while Bobby Bonds and Reggie Jackson were striking out. But Pedro Guerrero singled to left, and Henderson scored easily, putting the Sea Lions up, 1-0.

It didn't last long: Lou Gehrig took Grove deep in the top of the 2nd to tie the game. Willie Randolph--continuing to keep his average over .200--added an RBI single to give the Black Yankees the lead, but it could have been much worse for Grove, as Bonds caught a fly ball by Don Mattingly in shallow centerfield for the 2nd out and nailed Thurman Munson, trying to score from 3rd, to end the inning.

Again the lead barely lasted: Jimmy Bloodworth took Righetti deep to lead off the bottom of the 2nd. Later in the inning, a Henderson single scored Cy Perkins to edge San Francisco in front, 3-2.

It was a sloppy game through 3 innings with each team committing 2 errors (Randolph and Babe Ruth for New York, Dick Lundy and Jack Clark for the Sea Lions), Righetti walking 2 and Grove walking 3.

Mattingly would tie the game with homerun in the top of the 4th, and Jeter would drive in a run in the top of the 6th, giving the lead back to New York, 4-3. Again though: a lead with a short life. Perkins chased Righetti from the game with a 3-run shot in the bottom of the frame, with the Black Yankees bringing in Dellin Betances who got out of the inning without any further damage and a 6-4 lead for San Francisco.

The Black Yankees got one run back when Eric Davis singled, stole second and third, and scored on a base hit by Albert Belle.

San Francisco added 2 in the bottom of the 7th on Randolph's second error of the game, an errant throw that allowed both Henderson and Bonds to score.

But this New York team is hard to put away: Davis led off the top of the 9th with a single against Ron Robinson, and after Gehrig whiffed, Belle walked and Munson doubled, scoring Davis to make it a 2-run game, 8-6. Ken Howell relieved Robinson and promptly fanned Doug DeCinces and got pinch-hitter Mike Schmidt to groundout weakly in front of the plate to end the game.

#Game Two: Waite Hoyt @ Eddie Plank

This one started out as a pitching duel, with New York's Waite Hoyt and San Francisco's Eddie Plank each only allowing a single hit through 4 innings.

New York added 2 hits in the 5th--a double by Mike Schmidt and a single by Willie Randolph--but Plank fanned Derek Jeter and Don Mattingly to get out of the inning.

Dick Lundy opened the scoring in the bottom of the 5th when Lundy singled home Bob Cerv. Lundy would score in a hit by Rickey Henderson, and the Sea Lions took the lead, 2-0.

Plank held the shutout through the 6th, then gave up a single to Thurman Munson and a walk to Schmidt to lead off the 7th. That was it for him, as San Francisco brought in Chad Bradford from the pen with 2 on and no outs. New York would counter by bringing Lou Gehrig out to pinch-hit for Randolph. Gehrig was retired, but Bradford allowed one run before getting Babe Ruth to end the inning on a flay to deep center.

That narrowed the game to a 2-1 lead for San Francisco, which is where it stayed heading to the top of the 9th, where the Sea Lions turned to their closer Rod Beck.

The first batter was Munson, who immediately added to his incredible few weeks by taking Beck into the left field seats to tie the game. Schmidt would walk, followed by an infield single from Gehrig, and it suddenly felt like New York might blow the game open. Instead, Jeter grounded into a double play, and with the hugely ineffective Craig Counsell up, San Francisco seemed in decent shape ... until Beck's 2-2 pitch was wild, bouncing past Mickey Cochrane and allowing Schmidt to score. Counsell flew out to left, but the Black Yankees were ahead, 3-2.

They brought in their closer, Sparky Lyle, who set the side down in order, striking out Bobby Bonds to end the game.

Munson ended the day 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored as all 6 of the Black Yankees' hits came from the bottom 3 slots in their lineup.

#Game 3: Ron Guidry @ Cy Falkenberg

Rickey Henderson led off the bottom of the first with a long fly that sliced down the right field line, and barely stayed fair for a leadoff homerun off Ron Guidry and a 1-0 Sea Lions lead.

Leading off the bottom of the 3rd, it was Henderson again, this time with a double. He scored on an RBI single from Pedro Guerrero, making it 2-0. And, while Henderson led off the bottom of the 5th with a strikeout, the Sea Lions did add to their league on singles from Guerrero, Bobby Bonds, and Jimmy Bloodworth.

Through 5 innings, Cy Falkenberg had easily outmatched Guidry, allowing only 1 hit and 2 walks while strikeout out 5. But the top of the 6th began with a leadoff walk to Mickey Mantle, followed by Babe Ruth's 20th homerun of the year, cutting the lead to 3-2. Falkenberg walked Lou Gehrig and Albert Belle, and Thurman Munson dinked a little looper into right to load the bases. Don Mattingly tied the game with a sacrifice fly, but Falkenberg was able to escape the inning without further damage.

So, Guidry got a reprieve, having given up 8 hits through 5 innings while striking out 6. He struck out John Beckwith and Eddie Joost to lead off the 6th, but Dick Lundy doubled to deep left-center, chasing Guidry from the game in favor of Cole Hamels, who was able to retire Henderson to maintain the tied score.

Rick Langford may have pitched himself to AAA, allowing homeruns to Mantle and Gehrig, giving the Black Yankees a 6-3 lead.

Henderson would plate 2 in the bottom of the 8th with a double, scoring Beckwith and Lundy, and pulling San Francisco to within 1 run.

Ralph Citarella relieved Hamels, and promptly surrendered a ground-rule double to Guerrero, tying the game once more. Left in to pitch the bottom of the 9th, Bloodworth took Citarella deep to win the game for San Francisco.

Guerrero had 4 hits in the victory and Henderson 3 hits, driving in 3 and scoring 3 times.

#Game 4: Jack Scott @ Diego Segui

Ah, the pitching duel we all expected ... Diego Segui has been one of the shocks of the season, with an ERA near 2.00 since being recalled from AAA. He delivered here, allowing only 1 hit through 5 innings while the Black Yankees' Jack Scott did him one better, with a no-hitter through 5.

Manny Sanguillen took Segui deep for his first homerun of the year in the top of the 6th and from there the wheels sort of fell off: Mickey Mantle drove in 1 run, then Babe Ruth hit his 21st homerun of the year with a couple runners on, making it 5-0 New York.

A single by John Beckwith broke up the no-no, but Scott kept the shutout intact for another inning, until Reggie Jackson sent a line drive into the rightfield stands, cutting the lead to 5-1.

An Eddie Joost homerun closed it to 5-2, and Sparky Lyle seemed to close the door, easily retiring the first 2 Sea Lions in the bottom of the 9th. But singles by Jimmy Bloodworth and Wally Moon were followed by a pinch-hit double from Bob Cerv, bringing the winning run to the plate in the form of the conundrum that is Joost.

Lyle struck him out on a slider, preserving the win for New York and splitting the series at 2.

Derek Jeter was 3-for-4 for New York.

#Series Notes

So, a split in a close series with some excellent baseball on both sides.

Babe Ruth hit 2 homeruns, driving in 5 for New York, but those were his only 2 hits in the series. Other than the unstoppable Thurman Munson--who went 6-for-11, lifting his average to .320 on the year-- and Derek Jeter (6-for-18) the Black Yankees offense was kept largely in check.

For San Francisco, Jimmy Bloodworth went 6-for-17 with 2 homeruns and Pedro Guerrero 5-for-17. Perhaps more importantly for the Sea Lions, Rickey Henderson showed signs of breaking out of his slump, going 5-for-10 while scoring 5 runs and driving in 5.

The opening and closing matches between the Baltimore Black Sox and the Birmingham Black Barons were both worthy of consideration as the Game of the Series.

The first game started with Birmingham taking it to the best team in the league, with the legend that is Tom Herr and Dale Murphy both going deep. Earlier in the season, Murphy was sent to AAA after an absolutely horrific start to the season, and while he's not exactly setting the world on fire, he has been doing better since his recall.

A Frank Isbell homerun extended Birmingham's lead to 4-3, but the Black Sox tied it up in the top of the 5th when Ken Singleton drove in 2 with a single.

And there it stayed until the bottom of the 7th, when there goes that man again as Herr doubled and scored on a single by Bob Nieman. But Bobby Wallace took Hoyt Wilhelm deep for a 2-run shot and for a brief moment, the world was normal once more, with Baltimore on top, 6-5.

I did say briefly. Hank Aaron led off the bottom of the inning against Mike Mussina with a solo shot of his own, knotting the contest at 6.

And there we stayed, until the top of the 13th, when Bryce Harper singled home Curt Blefary for a 7-6 lead for Baltimore. And with Don Bessent heading out for the bottom of the frame, Black Sox fans began to pack up ... but Aaron would lead off with a single, moving to 3rd on a base-hit from Pie Traynor. He would score on a groundout by Del Crandall, which moved Traynor to third ... and Curtis Granderson would deliver the walk-off base-hit for an improbable victory for The Black Barons.

But the series wasn't done delivering the goods. Baltimore's Bill Byrd threw a 3-hit shutout in game 2, and Birmingham rode big days from Aaron and Isbell to win game 3.

That brought us to what could be a great pitching matchup, with Baltimore's Ned Garvin taking on Birmingham's Tim Hudson. Neither pitcher were in their team's rotations at the start of the year (Hudson was in AAA), and both were doing fantastically well.

Garvin came into the game at 5-2 with a 2.47 ERA and Hudson at 5-0 with a 2.70 ERA.

And, for once, the matchup held! Hudson had a shutout through 6 innings while Garvin's line was only marred by a 2-run homerun from Granderson.

The 7th was definitive for the game: Hudson gave up a homerun to Blefary and an RBI single to tie the game in the top of the frame, but Garvin was touched for an RBI double from Murphy and a run-scoring single from Frank McCormick, extending the lead to 4-2.

Neither starter would make it out of the 8th, as a solo shot from Frank Robinson chased Hudson. His replacement, Steve Bedrosian, was greeted by Blefary's second homerun of the game, with the back-to-back jacks tying the game at 4.

Buddy Groom came in for Baltimore to start the bottom of the 8th, and gave up an RBI double to Aaron and a 2-run shot to Troy Tulowitzki, putting the Black Barons back in front, and their closer, Juan Rincon came on to shut the door on the 7-4 victory.

So, a great series with an especially thrilling two games.

Other Games of Note

That's more like it. After struggling in his first start, Sandy Koufax delivered perhaps the finest start in the league so far, a 1-hit shutout of Kansas City. Koufax walked 2 and struck out 8 in the 3-0 victory. Brooklyn took the lead on a solo homerun from Roy White, and was helped out by2 hits from Duke Snider. Luke Hamlin pitched quite well, but still took the loss and Kansas City's only hit was a double by Stan Musial in the top of the first.

The opening game of the Cleveland Spiders' visit to Houston was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel. For the Colt 45's, Roy Oswalt's only error in 8 innings was a first inning homerun by Ron Blomberg as the Houston starter only allowed 5 hits and 2 walks in that span. But Cleveland's Bob Feller was even better, throwing a 6-hit shutout with 9 whiffs over 7.2 innings. Trevor Hoffman came on in the top of the 9th, and Blomberg took him deep for his 2nd of the day, and the Spiders' closer, Terry Adams, made it stand up.

The series closer between Indianapolis and Miami was notable for a few reasons. First, Miami's Dontrelle Willis was making his first career start. It did not go well, as Willis was touched for 5 runs (4 earned) in 4 innings. But Indianapolis' Red Faber fared little better, surrendering 7 runs in only 5 innings of work. The Cuban Giants' Eustaquio Pedroso delivered 3 solid innings of relief en route to the victory for Miami, which also saw Alejandro Oms hit for the first cycle in WBL history. Jim Thome added 3 hits and 2 homeruns for Miami, and Oscar Charleston and Ed Charles had strong days at the plate for the ABC's. Finally, Aroldis Chapman did indeed record his 11th save, but he did it in Chapman style, giving up 2 walks while walking his tightrope.

We're roughly 60 games into the season. The Baltimore Black Sox have been caught by the Portland Sea Dogs for the best record in the league, with each team sporting a 38-24 record to lead their divisions. They're the only two teams playing above .600, although the New York Black Yankees, at .597 (37-25) are right there, too.

You can see some of the reason for Portland's surge in the Relievers listed below, with three members of their bullpen making the list.

Performance

We're going to look at two things before our usual lists.

Great Performances

Series XV had two standout performances, the first occurrence of each in the league, one on the mound and one at the plate.

First, Sandy Koufax of the Brooklyn Royal Giants threw the WBL's first one-hitter, walking 2 and striking out 8 in a 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Monarchs. Koufax started the year in AAA, was impressive in Brooklyn's bullpen, and now has cemented a spot in their rotation, improving to 2-2 with a 3.58 ERA on the season.

Then, the Miami Cuban Giants saw the first cycle of the year, with Alejandro Oms going 4-for-5 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBIs to lead Miami to a 9-6 victory over the Indianapolis ABCs. Oms homered, tripled, and singled in his first 3 at-bats, and then was thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple in his final time up--giving him an unusual completion of the cycle.

Improving?

Some of the storylines of the early season have, of course, focused on batters who have struggled, but for whatever the reason were kept in their lineups despite little to no offensive contribution. Let's check in on how three of them are doing.

Baltimore's Paul Blair bottomed out about a month ago, with an OPS under .550. But (a) the Black Sox were winning all the time and (b) he still contributed great defense. Since then, he's added about .025 to his batting average, as well as some power. He's reverted, going 4-for-24 in his last few games, leaving him at 214/273/358. Not good, and still in danger, but trending in the right direction.

The Cleveland Spiders hoped Larry Doby would be a key part of their offense, instead, he's struggled all year. At one point, he had added about .100 points of OPS, peaking in the .650s. Like Blair, though, he's faded from that, going 2-20 to currently sit at 205/304/310. Cleveland is playing well, but Doby is likely to lose some significant playing time after the lineup adjustments following this series.

If any team could carry a low producing offensive player, it is the Black Yankees, who have patiently waited for Willie Randolph to contribute at the plate. It's starting to pay off, as Randolph is hitting as well as he has all year, improving to 205/339/282. Clearly, the OBP is the key stat here, and as long as Randolph gets on base, he will probably stay in the 9th position in their lineup.

Two teams have two players each who continue to struggle mightily. The Ottawa Mounties really needs to do something about the combination of Ken Griffey, Jr. (224/273/295 for the lowest OPS of any batting qualifier in the league) and Alex Rodriguez (206/251/333). With Freddy Parent on the edges of the all star discussions at SS, Rodriguez may be sent to AAA to try to work it out offensively.

The House of David has run out of patience with OF Sammy Sosa, who is limping along at 177/231/344.The power potential is clearly there, but the overall production is just far too weak. Mark McGwire is perhaps a more interesting case, hitting 167/314/203. A 150 point gap between BA and OBP is usually indicative in a player who will turn things around, but those are just putrid numbers for the big redhead.

Leading Performers

Note that Babe Ruth has tied teammate Eric Davis for the league lead in RBI, something Davis had a large lead in for most of the season. Ruth continues to dominate the leaderboards, topping the lead in 5 categories, and sitting 2nd in another, while San Francisco's Reggie Jackson continues to lead in both BA and OBP.

On the mound, Baltimore's Ned Garvin now qualifies for the rate stats, and tops the leaderboard in ERA and WHIP, and is second in BA against. Garvin is the only starting pitcher to lead the league in more than one category, although Portland's Walter Johnson is close. The Black Yankees' Ron Guidry still leads the league in strikeouts, but has slumped elsewhere.

Both Joseito Munoz (Portland) and Koufax are likely to join Garvin on the leaderboards as they accumulate more starts.

The Homestead Grays are winning the race to the bottom, with only 1 victory in their last 10 games, leaving them with the worst record in the WBL at 23-39.

Miami and the Philadelphia Stars have only won 3 of their last 10, while at the other end, the Memphis Red Sox, Ottawa, the San Francisco Sea Lions, and the Birmingham Black Barons have all won 7 of their last 10 games. Memphis, Ottawa, and Birmingham were all among the worst teams in the league by winning percentage, so the tables are once again tightening up.

The House of David's Elrod Hendricks has the most prolonged hot streak in the league, slashing 390/422/976 with 6 homeruns over his last 11 games. The miracle that is Birmingham's Tom Herr isn't far behind, hitting 424/500/758 over his last 9 contests.

At the other end, Sammy Sosa's struggles were mentioned above. The House of David OF is at 098/098/220 over his last 41 at-bats. Once among the hottest in the league, Philadelphia's Chase Utley has had a rough 10 games, managing only a 132/154/211 line in that time.

#Detroit Wolverines

Four Detroit pitchers combined to allow 6 hits and 1 run while striking out 10 as the Wolverines beat Los Angeles 5-1. Matt Anderson got his first win of the year, striking out 6 of the 9 batters he faced, and John Hiller picked up his first save. Chili Davis hit 2 homeruns, giving him 10 on the season.

The Wolverines scored 16 runs on 15 hits (Los Angeles pitchers allowed a stunning 14 walks) in a 16-5 drubbing of the Angels. Bob Bailey drove in 4 and Tony Phillips and George Davis each had 3 hits to lead the way.

Jimmy Collins hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 9th, leading the Wolverines to a 3-2 victory over Los Angeles. The win went to Buddy Napier in relief of an excellent Si Johnson, who allowed only 4 hits and 2 runs through 7.

Needing a fresh arm, the Angels sent Sid Fernandez to AAA, bringing Doc Gooden back up to the WBL for a start. It went better than could have been expected, with Gooden turning in his best performance of the year, allowing Detroit only 3 hits and 1 run through 6.2 innings in a game the Angels would eventually lose.

Gerrit Cole keeps doing just enough--despite giving up 5 walks and 6 hits in 6 innings, Cole became the WBL's first 9 game winner, moving to 9-3 on the year in a 6-3 victory over Detroit. Francisco Rodriguez and Jeurys Familia combined for a hitless 3 innings of relief, and George Wright had 3 hits while Mike Trout and Doug Radar added 2 RBIs each in the victory.

#Memphis Red Sox

Joe Beggs gave up his first runs of the year, surrendering a 2-run homer to Philadelphia's Scott Rolen in the bottom of the ninth, but it didn't really matter, as 5 RBI's from Wade Boggs (including a grand slam) powered Memphis to the 9-6 victory. Reggie Smith scored three times and Heath Bell got the win with 2.1 innings of perfect relief.

#Wandering House of David

Frank Sullivan and 2 relievers combined to allow only 4 hits in a 4-1 victory over the Gothams. Mark Grace went 3-for-5 with his 3rd homerun of the year, and George Stone also went deep for the 12th time on the season.

The House of David released Joakim Soria to make room for Scott Downs on the staff, and finally gave up on Sammy Sosa for the time being, sending the OF to AAA as Pete Browning was again welcomed back from the DL.

#Baltimore Black Sox

Bill Byrd allowed 3 hits (2 by Tom Herr, who continues to impress) in a complete-game shutout of Birmingham. The 7-0 win moved Byrd to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 3.16. Curt Blefary, Larry Gardner, and Dan McGann had 2 hits each in support of Byrd, with McGann and Bryce Harper driving in 2 each.

The Black Sox finally ran out of patience with Miller Huggins, sending the struggling 2B to AAA in favor of OF Baby Doll Jacobson, who had been absolutely demolishing minor league pitching.

#Chicago American Giants

Shoeless Joe Jackson took Jimmy Key's first ever pitch in the WBL out of the ballpark for the first of his 2 homeruns on the day, setting the tone for a blowout victory for the American Giants over Ottawa. Damian Jackson--who started the day hitting .165--went 4-for-5 and six--yes, six--Chicago batters had 3 hits (Shoeless Joe, Frank Thomas, Eddie Collins, Duffy Lewis, Dick Allen, and Carlton Fisk). Thomas drove in 4, and Tricky Nichols improved to 6-2 with 7 solid innings on the mound.

Not all news was good for Chicago, as Cristobal Torriente had to leave the game with a leg injury that landed him on the DL. Rocky Colavito was recalled from AAA in his place.

As the American Giants try to solve their bullpen, Frank Smith was returned to AAA, with Joe Lake coming up to Chicago to compete with Joe Horlen for the final rotation spot. Despite his good day detailed above, The Damian Jackson experiment is clearly on its way out. While Jackson stays with the big league club--someone has to play 2B when Collins is out--Jack Doyle, way down in AA, provides the same defensive flexibility, and cannot hit any worse. Avisail Garcia was also sent down, with Magglio Ordonez coming up to the big leagues. Jim Davenport and Nellie Fox were both released to make room on the 40-man roster.

#Houston Colt 45's

Mark Melancon picked up his 5th victory from the bullpen when Lance Berkman won the ballgame with a walk-off homerun against Cleveland. Jorge Posada also went deep and Jeff Bagwell and HR Johnson added 2 hits in the 4-3 victory.

Melancon did it again, moving to 6-1 when Jim O'Rourke provided a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 10th. Felipe Alou--perhaps playing to remain in the league--had 3 hits and 2 RBIs and Melancon, Dock Ellis, and Trevor Hoffman combined for 3.2 innings of 2-hit, shutout relief of an effective Stephen Strasbourg.

#Ottawa Mounties

Just another day for Tim Raines: 2 hits, 3 runs scored, 3 stolen bases to lead Ottawa to a 7-2 win over Chicago. Freddy Parent added his 9th homerun of the year and Jim Clancy pitched well, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs in just over 5 innings, moving to 3-2 on the season.

Jimmy Key was waived and Clark Griffiths returned to AAA to make room for Ted Bowsfield and Steve Howe's return from injury. More dramatically, the Mounties sent down Steve Garvey, Ken Griffey, Jr., and Alex Rodriguez to AAA in an effort to jump start their offense. Rick Monday, Larry Parrish, and--surprisingly, all the way from AA--Harry Easterday were recalled, with Felix Hernandez being waived. The end result of all this is that Jackie Jensen and Roy Sievers will get a lot of at-bats for a while.

#Cleveland Spiders

John Ellis drove in 5 runs with 4 hits and 2 homeruns, leading the Spiders to a 10-3 victory over Houston. Stan Coveleski threw 7 solid innings, improving his record to 4-1.

Hardie Henderson was sent to AAA to make room for Bill Steen's return from injury. Despite a good recent start, Bob Feller moved to the bullpen, with Steen stepping back into the rotation. Rowland Office--he of the very early season heroics--was sent down as well, with Evan Longoria coming back to Cleveland. Larry Doby remains on the roster, but will see his playing time decrease significantly.

#Homestead Grays

Homestead shook up its pitching staff, demoting Frank Linzy and Billy Pierce to AAA, naming Stan Bahnsen as their #5 starter, and moving Michael Jackson into the closer role. Babe Adams and Cliff Lee were recalled. Peaches Graham was demoted to AAA, with Rick Ferrell being recalled and Jim Hegan released.

#Indianapolis ABC's

Down a run in the top of the 9th and facing Miami's Aroldis Chapman, things looked bleak for the ABC's. But consecutive pinch hits from Dave Henderson and Johnny Bench tied the game and Oscar Charleston delivered the go-ahead run with a clean single to center. The comeback vindicated a strong start from David Price, who allowed 4 hits and 2 runs in 8 innings, moving to 2-4 on the year. Rob Dibble picked up his 9th save with a perfect bottom of the 9th.

Doc White has replaced Red Faber in the starting rotation for Indianapolis.

#Philadelphia Stars

Steve Carlton heads to the DL after being pulled having only thrown 2 innings against Memphis. He'll miss 2 starts, at least. Fred Talbot was recalled from AAA.

Bob McClure was returned to AAA as the Stars continue to struggle to find both a couple more starters and a bridge to the excellent back end of their bullpen. In the meantime, John Montgomery Ward returns to the rotation, and Jack Easton was recalled. The Stars would be willing to ship Bill Dickey, Jimmy Rollins, and Mickey Doolin to AAA, but there just aren't enough options. Dickey was moved down (making the preseason trade of, essentially, him for Mike Schmidt, look like a total fleecing), with Mike Scioscia moving up to the majors.

#Birmingham Black Barons

With a pitching staff decimated by use, the Black Barons went ahead and placed Scott Baker on the 10-day DL, even as they await details on the extent of his injury. John Malarkey was recalled from AAA to help out in the meantime.

Hank Aaron went deep twice and Tom Herr and Frank Isbell hit back-to-back triples leading Birmingham to a 10-4 win over Baltimore. Dick Rudolph got the win and Vic Willis picked up his first save.

Willis has allowed only 2 hits in 11 innings, earning the 5th spot in Birmingham's rotation from here on out. The pairing of Del Crandall and Dale Murphy behind the plate hasn't really worked out, but it still seems like the best option. Frank McCormick's struggles have reduced his playing time going forward, and Pie Traynor's incredible start is demanding some more starts at 3B.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Ray Dandridge continued his torrid start in the big leagues, scoring twice and adding 3 hits and Duke Snider drove in 2 with 3 hits of his own as the Royal Giants topped Kansas City, 9-4.

The highly-touted pitching matchup between Brooklyn's Don Drysedale and Kansas City's Andy Petitte delivered, with both starters turning in solid performances. But the game was won in the bottom of the 9th on a walk-off homerun just over the left field wall from Raul Mondesi, his 7th blast of the season. Trevor Hildenberger moved to 2-0 with 2 innings of perfect relief.

The Royal Giants shook up their lineup a bit, sending Steve Yeager, Mike Piazza, and Mondesi to AAA--none of them with an OPS over .615. Coming the other way are C Al Lopez, and OFs Jermaine Dye and Michael Brantley. Hobe Ferris was released.

#Miami Cuban Giants

The Cuban Giants' 2-1 win over Indianapolis was pretty costly. The win was fueled by 4 innings of one-hit relief by Marcelino Lopez after Rube Waddell had to leave the game complaining of a wrist injury. Roenis Elias got the win and Clay Condrey the save, with Alejandro Oms driving in the winning run. Waddell will miss a couple weeks; the news on Carlos Moran is worse, with the speedy outfielder out for 7 or 8 weeks with plantar fasciitis. P Dontrelle Willis and OF Sandy Amoros were recalled after the game to fill the roster spots.

It got a bit worse, even: Alex Colome will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury, prompting Miami to recall Sandy Consuegra.

Willis was returned to AAA right after his first start, with Jose Mendez being recalled from his rehab assignment.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Rick Langford was returned to AAA, with Bump Hadley taking his spot in the Sea Lions' bullpen.

It's been a long time since we checked in on the House of David, who were featured way back in Series V when they visited Los Angeles. The Baltimore Black Sox--currently tied for the best record in baseball--were featured in Series IX.

Wandering House of David

The House of David are struggling towards .500, sitting 6 games below that mark, and 5 games behind Detroit in the Bill James Division. Honestly, even that may be outperforming their metrics (they are, in fact, 2 games above their Pythagorean projection at this point).

The pitching has been an issue all season. C.C. Sabathia started the year quite well, and if the House of David have an ace, he's it. But he's only 5-5 on the year, with a 4.29 ERA (his WHIP of 1.33 is more respectable), and some would look at Jack Taylor (4-5, 3.57 ERA) as having been more dependable. Probably their best pitcher has been Bob Rush, who sparkled out of the pen, and has just recently moved into the rotation. Rush is 4-3, with a 3.07 ERA, and both he and Taylor have identical 1.18 WHIPs.

The bullpen has been fairly mediocre: Joakim Soria started the year as the closer, lost that role to Bruce Sutter, and was just released. Sutter has been fine, and recently promoted Lee Smith has some potential, but neither he nor Rollie Fingers seem terribly reliable at the moment.

The House of David's best offensive player has, hands down, been Pete Browning, who is slashing 385/419/606, The problem is Browning has only been healthy for about 28 games. He's back now, and hopefully can spark a struggling offense.

The bright spots of the offense are clear: OF George Stone (318/407/552 and a team-high 12 homeruns), C Elrod Hendricks (291/344/581), and--in one of the shocks of the league--OF Dan Ford (375/396/557 in about half their games) have led the team along with SS Ernie Banks who tops the team with 44 RBIs. And ... that's about it. Ron Santo and Mark Grace have been fine, and Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire have been miserable (Sosa was just sent to AAA to work it out).

Optimism for the House of David centers around Browning's health and Ford not collapsing. We'll see.

Baltimore Black Sox

The Black Sox have ridden strong starting pitching and a solid offense to the best record in the league, even after a shocking series against Birmingham, where they lost 3-out-of-4. They'll be looking to right the ship immediately, with their ace, Dennis Martinez taking the mound for the first game. Martinez is 7-2 with a 3.15 ERA, but calling him their ace may be a little misleading: Bill Byrd has essentially the same ERA at 3.16 and Ned Garvin may be the best pitcher in the league at the moment, with an ERA well under 3.00.

Don Bessent and Bob Miller have combined for 11 saves, with neither actually being declared the official closer, and Sean Marshall and Buddy Groom continue to pitch really well out of the pen.

Offensively, Curt Blefary has slowed down slightly, but is still mashing the ball at a 289/392/639 clip to lead the way, and he and Frank Robinson (313/394/537) are among the better duos in the league. Three regulars--SS Bobby Wallace, 1B Dan McGann, and 2B Larry Gardner have OBPs over .400, ensuring plenty of traffic on the basepaths, and the Black Sox' patience with Bryce Harper has really paid off as, after a month of struggle, the young outfielder is starting to contribute more and more offensively.

Recently recalled Baby Doll Jacobsen was perhaps the most dominant hitter in AAA, so the club is eager to see if he can contribute.

Series Prediction

I mean ... Baltimore is clearly the superior team. And they'll be looking to bounce back after a disappointing series with Birmingham. I think they will, and the House of David will only win one game, either for Taylor or Sabathia.

Entries for Series XVI come down to a single game and a great series. First, the game.

#Philadelphia Stars @ Los Angeles Angels, Game 3

With the series tied at 2, Philadelphia sent Jaret Wright to the mound to take on Nolan Ryan. Ryan was making his 6th start of the year, and his 3rd after returning to the rotation. It hasn't gone great: 2 losses and 9 runs in 9 innings.

It didn't start great for Ryan, as he gave up a leadoff single to Willie Davis and walked Rico Carty, but induced a double play from Ted Kluszewski to escape the inning.

Los Angeles scored in the bottom of the frame on a Mike Trout single after Don Buford led off with a base hit and stole second.

The top of the second was more of the same for Ryan: a single, a hit by pitch, and a walk, but no runs allowed. The third was not so kind: Gavvy Cravath doubled in a run, Kluszewski scored on a wild pitch, and Cravath scored on a groundout to give the Angels the lead, 3-1. Ryan wouldn't make it through the 4th, as he hit another batter and walked Kluszewski, bringing in Pud Galvin from the bullpen, who was able to shut the door despite a walk to load the bases.

Wright was sailing along at this point, but a leadoff single in the bottom of the 4th was followed by a 2-run homerun from Trout, tying the game at 3.

Wright and Galvin traded goose eggs until the bottom of the 7th, when Wright walked Doug Radar and gave up a double to Bobby Grich.

So we went to the top of the 9th with the Angels ahead by a run. It had been an hard game on the Angels' staff, and with their usual closer, Joe Nathan, a bit fatigued, they turned to Francisco Rodriguez. Rodriguez got Sherm Lollar to strike out swinging, but gave up a double to Carty.

That brought in Jonny Venters to face Kluszewski, who grounded out, sending John Montgomery Ward (who pinch-ran for Carty) to third. With that, the Angels turned to a tired Nathan to close the game out. Instead, he walked Cravath and gave up a game-tying single to Scott Rolen.

Larry Jackson, on for Philadelphia, kept it tied, and with nobody else to turn to, LA kept Nathan out there. It wasn't a great move, as Davis took him deep for a 5-4 lead for the Stars.

The Stars' Bobby Howry relieved Jackson, and retired the side on six pitches to preserve the win. Davis had three hits and Cravath two for the Stars, while Trout had 2 hits and 3 RBI for the Angels.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants @ New York Black Yankees, Games 1, 3 & 4

Since I don't want to write detailed summaries of each game--we do have a featured series, after all--I will instead trace some of the major throughlines.

Game one was a pitching duel between Frank Knauss and Red Ruffing. The Black Yankees scored a run in the bottom of the first two innings on a homerun from Babe Ruth and a triple from Lou Gehrig.

Ruffing--who is quickly moving into all-star contention--had a shutout through 8, but with one out in the 9th, gave up a double to Roy White and a single to Duke Snider. That brought in the Black Yankees' closer, Sparky Lyle. Lyle struggled, giving up an RBI single to Jermaine Dye and base hit to Ron Cey to load the bases, before inducing a double play groundout from Hi Myers to preserve the victory.

Brooklyn shuffled its roster significantly prior to the series, and the game saw the WBL debuts of Dye and Michael Brantley.

Game three was somewhat similar: Waite Hoyt of the Black Yankees had a solid start going, while Brooklyn's Don Sutton struggled a bit, leaving New York leading 5 to 4 (Brooklyn's Al Lopez hit a homerun in his first WBL at-bat and Babe Ruth hit a 2-run shot for New York) heading into the top of the 9th.

Again, the Black Yankees turned to Sparky Lyle. And that's where the game turned.

Lyle gave up a leadoff walk to Dickie Thon, a single to Duke Farrell, an RBI single to Beals Becker and another to Jackie Robinson. Roy White singled to load the bases, and that was it for Lyle. Ralph Citarella gave up a double to Duke Snider, and when the inning ended, Brooklyn was on top 8-5.

Despite giving up a leadoff single to Lou Gehrig, Brooklyn's closer, Watty Clark, shut the door in the bottom of the 9th.

Becker, Robinson, Snider, and Lopez each had 2 hits for the Royal Giants while Mickey Mantle was 4-for-4 for New York.

The final game of the series promised to be another pitching duel between Brooklyn's Don Drysedale and New York's Ron Guidry. It wasn't. Drysedale gave up 10 hits and 6 runs (5 earned) in 6 innings and while Guidry fared a little better (4 runs in 5.2 innings), it wasn't a great performance by any means.

Guidry did become the first WBL pitcher to notch 100 strikeouts on the season.

The Black Yankees led 6 to 4 heading to the top of the 8th. But Jermaine Dye took Lady Baldwin deep for a 2-run homerun to tie the game. Then, in the top of the 9th, Goose Gossage (perhaps auditioning to become New York's new closer) gave up another 2-run shot, this one to Roy White, to give the Royal Giants the lead.

Thurman Munson continued his torrid streak, getting his fourth hit of the day with a double to lead off the bottom of the 9th, but Watty Clark was able to get out of the inning with only 1 run scoring, giving Brooklyn the win and a 3-1 edge in the series.

#Game 1: Jack Taylor @ Dennis Martinez

Pete Browning's return from the DL began with a single to left off Dennis Martinez in the first inning, sending George Stone to second base. But Martinez was able to get out of the inning without giving up a run.

The Black Sox took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd on a 3-run shot by Frank Robinson.
An RBI single by Stone got one back for the House of David in the top of the 4th.

In the top of the 5th, with Martinez struggling, Baby Doll Jacobson made a mark on his WBL debut by throwing out Elrod Hendricks at home. Martinez would give up only the 1 run in his 5 innings, despite surrendering 8 hits.

And that was it: Bob Welch, Sean Marshall, and Gregg Olson shut down the House of David the rest of the way, and the Black Sox took the opening game of the series.

#Game 2: Wade Miley @ Jim Palmer

Elrod Hendricks took Jim Palmer deep in the top of the first, giving the House of David a 3-0 lead. Dan McGann got one back for Baltimore, taking Wade Miley down the left field line for his 9th homerun of the season.

The long balls kept coming: George Stone hit a solo shot in the top of the 2nd and Baby Doll Jacobson, making his first start after his recent recall from AAA, launched a 2 run shot in the bottom of the frame for his first WBL hit.

Dan Ford--who has cemented himself as the House of David's regular RFer--went deep in the top of the 5th, making the score 5-3.

Miley couldn't complete the 5th, leaving after back-to-back 2-out walks in favor of Dick Tidrow, who fanned Frank Robinson to preserve the lead and strand the two baserunners. Palmer lasted a little longer, surrendering to Mike Mussina when he gave up a walk to open the 6th inning.

Mussina finally ran out of gas in the top of the 9th, giving up hits to Ryne Sandberg and Mark McGwire before giving way to Buddy Groom, who allowed an RBI single to pinch-hitter Ron Santo. Groom struck out Stone, but the ball got away from Curt Blefary, and his throw to first sailed into the outfield, scoring another run.

That made it 7-3, House of David, heading to the bottom of the 9th. Larry Gardner led off with a single, but Rollie Fingers induced a double play from Bobby Wallace. A single from McGann chased Fingers, bringing in Bruce Sutter to face Robinson, who singled. Sutter got Ken Singleton to ground out to end the game, evening the series at a game apiece.

#Game 3: Frank Sullivan @ Bill Byrd

Baltimore would turn to Bill Byrd to try to change their fortunes in game three.

Byrd would give up a leadoff triple to George Stone, who scored on a groundout from Dan Ford. Baltimore would get the first singles from their first two batters, but were unable to score, and we ended the first inning with the House of David ahead, 1-0.

Byrd would give up a solo shot to Elrod Hendricks in the top of the 4th, doubling the lead to 2-0 in favor of the House of David.

Frank Sullivan was sailing along until the bottom of the 5th, when Bryce Harper led off with a walk and Cal Ripkin, Jr. followed with a double to straight away CF. Paul Blair brought home Harper with a sacrifice fly, but that was all Baltimore could manage, and the 5th inning ended with the score 2-1.

Harper tied the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th.

Baltimore's Sean Marshall worked in and out of trouble in the top of the 8th, putting two runners on base, but inducing a double-play and a soft popout to maintain the tie.

A scoreless ninth ensued, and we were heading to extra innings.

Ryne Sandberg triple with one out in the top of the 10th, and scored on a single by Richie Hebner. Stone would follow with his 2nd three-bagger of the day, scoring Hebner and making it 4-2 in favor of the House of David.

Bruce Sutter gave up a walk, but worked around it to seal the victory, putting the House of David up, two games to one.
Hendricks ended the day with four hits.

#Game 4: @ Johnny Sain @ CC Sabathia

Two of the coldest arms in the WBL face-off in game four. Baltimore's Johnny Sain sits at 5-4 with an ERA well over 5.00 while the House of David's CC Sabathia is 5-5 with an ERA about a run lower. But neither have thrown well in a while.

The House of David's best hitters generated their first run: Pete Browning singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Elrod Hendricks.

The Black Sox tied the game in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Frank Robinson, and took the lead when Richie Hebner made a throw that sailed over Mark Grace's head at first. Bryce Harper followed with a double into the right field corner, and when Sabathia finally got out of the inning, Baltimore was in front, 5-1.

Hendricks drove in Dan Ford with a single in the top of the third, but a great throw from Paul Blair nailed Browning at home to limit the damage.

Ramon Hernandez made it 7-2 with a homerun in the bottom of the frame.

Browning's third hit of the game was a long shot to left-center, making the score 7-3 and generating activity in the Black Sox bullpen.

Both bullpens actually did well, and the game was scoreless across the final four frames. Hendricks ended with 4 hits for the House of David, while Harper had 3 for Baltimore.

Series Overview

So, a split, a result that will disappoint Baltimore, and give the House of David some hope.

For the House of David, Elrod Hendricks was on fire, going 11-for-15 in the four games with 2 homeruns and 6 RBIs. The problem was nobody else did much of note.

The hitting star for Baltimore was Bryce Harper, who went 7-for-13, raising his average nearly 20 points. Again, though, it was pretty much a one man show.

Awards

Robinson Canó of the Kansas City Monarchs won the WBL Player of the Week. It's unusual to win the award with only 7 at-bats over the week ... but Canó went 6-for-7 with 3 homeruns and 6 RBIs to take the honor.

Performance

Let's do a look at the youngest players in the WBL before the usual lists.

Only one true teenager has enough plate appearances to make the leaderboards, and that is Bryce Harper of the Baltimore Black Sox. Harper, 19, who struggled for the opening month or so, has begun to come around, now sporting an OPS just over .700.

But four players under 21 years of age are sporting OPS' over .900, led by the Monarchs' Stan Musial (21, 343/406/593) and the Memphis Red Sox's Ted Williams (20, 293/380/573).

You could actually put together a great hitting team from the qualifying youngsters, although you would need to juggle some positions:

1B: Frank Robinson, 20, Baltimore.
2B: Tim Raines, 21, Ottawa Mounties.
SS: Carlos Correa, 21, Houston Colt 45s.

On the mound, the true teenage starting pitchers are the Portland Sea Dogs' Walter Johnson, who is among the best in the business, and the Cleveland Spider's Bob Feller, who has certainly shown some flashes. Johnson (7-2, 3.61) and the Brooklyn Royal Giants' Don Drysedale (20, 4-3, 3.32) would lead the staff.

Two 18 year-olds are more than holding their own, albeit in limited action: Portland's Joseito Muñoz has been essentially unhittable, posting a 0.70 ERA in 26 innings and Houston's Leon Day has a 2.57 ERA in 10 games.

Streaks

We're getting to the point where active streaks are more and more rare because, math.

Some exceptions, though: in one of the more surprising developments, the Black Yankees' Thurman Munson has reached base in 36 straight games. The Gothams' Willie Mays has an active streak of 25 games.

Baltimore's Elrod Hendricks has gotten a hit in 8 consecutive at-bats, the longest streak in the league so far.

Cy Young deserves some attention: 6 consecutive wins, and undefeated over his last 11 starts. After a rocky start to the season, Chicago's AJ Minter hasn't been scored on in his last 15 outings.

Minter's teammate Joe Jackson is on a tear, hitting 462/509/885 over his last 12 games. At the other end, Houston's Jimmy Wynn is hitless in his last 25 at-bats, managing only 2 walks in that time to see his overall numbers plummet.

#Detroit Wolverines

Detroit pounded 5 homeruns--3 in the first inning--in a 9-5 win over Cleveland. Oscar Gamble, Bob Bailey, Jimmy Collins, Ty Cobb, and Tony Phillips all went deep, and Hank Aguirre put in 7 strong innings to level his record at 3-3.

With Kevin Hart looking good in his rehab assignment at AAA, the Wolverines demoted Jason Schmidt and returned Hart to the big leagues.

#Los Angeles Angels

A grand slam from Doug Radar and homeruns from Elmer Valo and Bobby Grich led Los Angeles to a 10-1 lead, helping Gerrit Cole become the first 10 game winner in the WBL.

#New York Gothams

Juan Marichal moved to 7-2 with 8 innings of one-hit ball as the Gothams beat Ottawa, 2-1. Brian Wilson picked up his 9th save, recording 3 outs on 5 pitches in a game where New York managed only 2 hits, both by Pinky Higgins.

#Chicago American Giants

Joe Jackson's streak of games with an extra-base hit ended at 9, but he stole 3 bases and Eddie Collins stole 4 to lead the American Giants to a 4-3 win over Homestead. Duffy Lewis and Frank Thomas had 2 hits each, with Lewis driving in 2, Herb Pennock improved to 4-2 and A.J. Minter picked up his 9th save.

Lewis and Dick Allen went back-to-back in the 4th inning, and Allen added a solo shot in the 8th to lead Chicago to a win in game 2 of the series. Tricky Nichols pitched a strong 7 innings to move to 7-2 on the season, and Minter picked up his 10th save.

#Kansas City Monarchs

7 Monarchs had 2 hits each, and a pinch-hit homerun from Robinson Canó put the game out of reach as Kansas City topped Portland, 10-4. Lou Brock, Stan Musial, and Jack Rowe also went deep for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs lost their best starter when Andy Pettitte had to leave after only 5 pitches against Portland. Pettitte will miss one start, maybe two during his stint on the DL. Bob Gibson--7-2 since his demotion to AAA--was recalled from St. Louis to join the big league club.

#Ottawa Mounties

Roy Halladay pitched magnificently, allowing only 2 hits in 8 innings. But those led to 2 runs (1 earned), and the Mounties fell to the Gothams, 2-1. Halladay's ERA dropped to 3.75 while his record fell to 3-5.

Larry Walker's return from the DL will be met with much optimism: he's been one of their best players when healthy. Jackie Jensen heads back to AAA with Walker's return.

#Indianapolis ABC's

Doc White's first start of the season was a successful one with the ABC's defeating Houston 4-3. White had a shutout through 7 innings, before Jeff Bagwell drove him from the game with his 8th homerun of the year. Rob Murphy and Rob Dibble closed out the game, with Dibble picking up his 10th save.

Dibble got his 11th the next night, preserving a 5-1 victory for Indianapolis. Dolf Luque was masterful, allowing 2 hits and 1 run in over 7 innings, and Bob Bescher drove in 4 runs for the ABC's.

Octavio Dotel's rough, rough stint in the big leagues has moved him back to AAA with Lefty James coming of the DL.

#New York Black Yankees

Dave Righetti's miserable outing against Brooklyn (6 runs in under 3 innings, lowering his record to 3-6 and raising his ERA to 6.27) has moved the lefthander out of the rotation for the time being. There's not much to pick from between Lady Baldwin and Cole Hamels, with both lefty's expected to get some opportunities as starters.
