July 1st, 1881 - Standings/Statistics
July 1st, 1881 - Boston led the league early in the season, and they have recaptured first place thanks to the pitching of Jim Whitney (2.09 ERA), and some really, really good hitting up and down the lineup. Let's take a look at their lineup to get an idea:

August 1st, 1881 - Standings/Statistics
August 1st, 1881 - In yet another lead change, the Cleveland Blues have risen to the top of the NL leaderboard. Starter Jim McCormick has a crisp 2.03 ERA, and since we looked at Boston last month, let's take a look at Cleveland's lineup at the start of August:

September 1st, 1881 Standings
September 1st, 1881 - The Cleveland Blues continue to dominate as they hold a 3 game lead over Boston with a magic number of 16. At 4 1/2 games back, Worcester should still be considered in the running, but everyone past that point doesn't seem likely to have a shot. Providence has really struggled this year thanks to Old Hoss Radbourne, who has a 3-30 record and a 7.04 ERA.

September 23, 1881 - Cleveland started their day with a magic number of 1, knowing that all they had to do was defeat Providence and the pennant was theirs. The Blues scored 8 runs in the top of the first inning and didn't look back, winning the game by a score of 14-4 and securing the 1881 National League pennant. Congratulations to the Cleveland Blues and their fans, and here is a look at your championship Cleveland Blues.

January 1st, 1882 - Ross Barnes Retires
January 1st, 1882 - Four time pennant winner and multi-award winning shortstop/second baseman Ross Barnes announced his retirement today. In the league since 1871, Ross has spent the past several seasons battling a mysterious illness that has frequently robbed him of his strength and agility. Despite the illness, Barnes hit .320 last season and led the league with a .403 on base percentage. He leaves the game with the all time best career batting average of .349.

March 15, 1882 - 1882 Season Predictions
***It looks like all my graphics are gone, which means that the server must be down that I use. When you use a free server...that happens sometimes. Hopefully everything will return soon.***
March 15th, 1882 - Season Predictions NATIONAL LEAGUE Boston Red Caps - Boston has acquired legendary pitcher Bobby Matthews (1.76 ERA) to join the rotation with Jim Whitney (2.77 ERA). The batting lineup is rather mediocre but not too bad. Center fielder Pete Hotaling (.260/38 RBI's) joins the team from Worcester and will be the leadoff hitter. Several core players return including third baseman Ezra Sutton (.280/42 RBI's) who bats fourth this year. Shortstop Sam Wise (.111/2 RBI's) has transferred from Detroit after a rookie season in which he didn't see too much action. He's replacing George Wright, who followed skipper Harry Wright to Providence. John Morrill will play first base and do the managing this season. If the lineup can support Whitney and Mathews just enough, Boston could actually win the pennant, although a second or third place finish seems more likely. Buffalo Bisons - Pud Galvin (3.31 ERA) is joined by promising rookie pitcher Hugh Daily. The Buffalo lineup is literally the exact same players as last year. That equates to good hitting in the 1-5 slots, and mediocre to poor hitting in the 6-8 slots. Buffalo has steadily improved its record over the past 3 seasons, and last year saw them finish 43-40 (.518). Expect that trend to continue and look for Buffalo to have another winning season, though they likely won't be going to the World Series. Chicago White Stockings - Fred Goldsmith (4.22 ERA) and Larry Corcoran (1.86 ERA) return to Chicago's starting rotation. Goldsmith will have to find a way to pitch closer to Corcoran's standard for Chicago to have a chance. And they do have a chance. The lineup is the same as last year, and it is a really good lineup. Chicago finished 4 games over .500 last year, improving on the prior season's meltdown and sub .500 performance. George Gore (.259/40 RBI's) will bat 4th, and he needs to bring his average up a bit. So does Joe Quest (.172/29 RBI's) who is batting 8th and playing second base. Therefore, Fred Goldsmith, George Gore, and to a certain degree Joe Quest may be the group of players that need to be successful in order for Chicago to win the pennant...though I am predicting a second or third place finish. Cleveland Blues - Cleveland brings much the same team as last season, a season that saw them winning their first pennant. That success is going to continue, and they will once again be at the top of the National League at the end of the season. Jim McCormick (2.06 ERA) will start, and if he tires, George Bradley (1.60 ERA in 1880) is the emergency pitcher. The batting lineup is excellent, and features second baseman Fred Dunlap who batted .353 last year. Cleveland is the team to beat in the National League. Detroit Wolverines - Pitchers Stump Wiedman (2.84 ERA) and George Derby (2.23 ERA) return to a similar situation as last year...they don't have alot of run support. Though shortstop Mike McGeary (.269) arrives from Cleveland, Detroit will continue to struggle to get runs on the board. Expect a similar record as last season, a record that will be below .500. Providence Grays - Old Hoss Radbourne (7.08 ERA) was a dagger in the heart last season to the team from Providence. The good news is Monte Ward (2.67 ERA) also returns, but the story of Providence will revolve around the success or failure of Radbourne. Shortstop George Wright (.271 / 57 RBI) arrives from Boston along with coach Harry Wright, and both of these Wrights are critical improvements to the team. However, it is all for naught if Old Hoss Radbourne cannot improve his game. All eyes will be upon him as the season kicks off. I'm predicting a 4th place finish for Providence. Troy Trojans - Mickey Welch saw his ERA rise from 2.80 to 3.83 in 1881. Tim Keefe (2.86 ERA) is his partner in the rotation once again. Bob Ferguson returns to play and manage once again, but thankfully, he has finally pulled himself from the starting rotation. Frankly, it's about time as Ferguson hasn't had a good season since 1876. Troy struggled last year, and they've done little to improve their situation. Expect them to struggle once more in 1882. Worcester Ruby Legs - Lee Richmond (2.26 ERA) carried the load for Worcester last year, and he'll do so again this season. Richmond is a great pitcher, but like several other teams, he does not get very much run support. Expect that trend to continue in 1882 as Worcester hasn't made any blockbuster deals to improve at the plate. Rookie Center fielder Jackie Hayes could be good, but it won't be enough to save Worcester from another painful season. AMERICAN ASSOCIATION Baltimore Orioles - Oh, this first season is going to hurt for the Orioles. Tricky Nichols (2.78 ERA in 1880), isn't going to have enough tricks to right this ship as it takes on water immediately after casting off the dock. Their lone starter with experience (other than Nichols) is second baseman Amos Booth, who batted .194 for Cincinnati in 1880. Cincinnati Red Stockings - Starting pitcher Will White had a 3.81 ERA for Detroit last year, and the batting lineup doesn't look much better. Though their lineup isn't great, at least most of them have big league experience, so maybe that will be used to their advantage. Louisville Eclipse - Young pitcher Tony Mullane pitched to the tune of a 2.00 ERA last year for Detroit in 18 innings of work; this year he gets to start for the new Louisville Eclipse team. There's some talent here for sure, particularly in rookie second baseman Pete Browning, whom scouts are expecting to be an instant star. This isn't a perfect team, but in the newly formed American Association, the Eclipse could be good enough to compete for a pennant. Philadelphia Athletics - Starting pitcher Sam Weaver last pitched in 1878 for the Milwaukee Grays, when he went an unfortunate 12-31 while pitching with a 1.95 ERA, striking out 95 and walking only 21. Now 4 years later he gets the call again for the new version of the Philadelphia Athletics. It doesn't seem fair that once again, Weaver is going to face the same problem he faced in Milwaukee: An utter lack of run support. Rookie third baseman Jack O'Brien should do well, and beyond that, there isn't much to write home about. There's too many question marks and not enough talent on this new Athletics team. Pittsburgh Alleghenys - The two man rotation of Harry Salisbury and Denny Driscoll doesn't look too promising on paper. The batting lineup is pretty weak too. John Peters (.285) and Jake Goodman (.297) are the danger spots in the lineup for opposing pitchers. The rest of this crew looks pretty bad. This is not a very exciting group of players for Pittsburgh's first big league offering. St. Louis Brown Stockings - Rookie pitcher Jumbo McGuinnis will carry the load for the Brown Stockings, but there are a slew of backup pitchers to help him out in times of trouble. Of particular note is left-hander Bobby Mitchell, who last pitched in 1879 for Cleveland with a 2.31 ERA over 101 innings. The lineup consists heavily of rookies with varying degrees of potential. Third baseman Jack Gleason bats leadoff. He last played for the 1877 St. Louis team when he batted .280. Jack's brother Bill Gleason is a rookie, and he'll be playing shortstop, making the left side of the infield covered by clan Gleason. Scouts believe younger brother Bill could be pretty good too. Rookie first baseman Charlie Comiskey is also getting some positive comments from those who have seen him play. With so many rookies, this is a difficult team to judge. They could compete for the pennant, or they could just as easily be competing for the cellar. My instinct tells me it will be the former. |

My Web Hosting Site is Down
Wow - I can't believe 5gbfree.com is still down, and thus, all of my images in this thread. It's been down all day...I hope this isn't permanent. If so, I still have everything...it'll just be a pain to reconnect all the links if I have to move.
***EDIT -I've moved all of my images, so that's good. The only thing left is the website*** Last edited by guamyank; 06-28-2018 at 07:00 PM. |

May 3rd, 1882 - Opening Day
May 3rd, 1882 - It's opening day for both the National League and the American Association, so let's take a look at the scores on this historic first day of play for the American Association! Boston defeated Worcester 7-6 in the bottom of the tenth. The game was won by pitcher Jim Whitney, who hit a two out run scoring single.
Chicago defeated Buffalo 9-8, despite a 9th inning 3 run rally by the home town Bisons that fell just 1 run short. Cleveland defeated visiting Detroit 7-6 in the 11th inning, thanks to a game winning single by Orator Shafer. Shafer had 4 hits on the day and scored 3 runs. In an embarrassing home opener, the Troy Trojans defeated Providence 17-1. It wasn't a good omen for Old Hoss Radbourne, though only 6 of the 17 runs were earned. The real issue here was the 12 errors made by his teammates. Meanwhile, in the American Association, the league was kicked off with a 6-1 victory by Pittsburgh over Cincinnati. Harry Salisbury pitched 8 innings and gave up 1 run for the victory. The Philadelphia Athletics defeated the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 in the 11th inning. Pop Smith knocked in the game winning run with a triple. Louisville defeated St. Louis 8-5, with Tony Mullane picking up the win. |

July 1st, 1882 - Cleveland continues to dominate in the National League, while Louisville won 14 games in a row in the American Association, almost crushing any hope Philadelphia had of maintaining first place.

Error Discovered
Well, it looks like I messed up...
I had duplicate Harry Mccafferys ...1 for St. Louis, and 1 for Louisville. The Louisville Mccaffery batted .288 and has contributed to Louisville's success...they currently have a 2 1/2 game lead in the American Association. He wasn't supposed to join Louisville until August 28th, todays date. So, I have a couple options: 1. Start the entire season over - I'm seriously considering this. 2. Delete the St. Louis McCaffery and keep it rolling. 3. Delete the St. Louis McCaffery, and as a penalty to Louisville, force their McCaffery to sit out the rest of the season. -I'm also seriously considering this one. The thing is, though this is a historical sim...it clearly isn't intended to be perfect. What would you do? |

August 28th, 1882 - Harry McCaffery Suspended for Season
August 28th, 1882 - Louisville Eclipse second baseman Harry McCaffery has been suspended for the remainder of the regular season due to violation of his contract with the St. Louis Brown Stockings. The decision was made during an emergency league meeting on the matter. Should Louisville make the post-season, McCaffery will be allowed to play. The league president expressed his thanks to contributing members for help in making the decision.

September 1st, 1882 - Standings/Statistics
September 1st, 1882 - The Cleveland Blues appear to be cruising towards their second straight pennant with a 9 game lead over Boston and a magic number of 8. In the American Association, the situation extremely more volatile, as Louisville clings to a 1 game lead over surging Pittsburgh, who at one point won 16 games in a row. Cincinnati has also been red hot as of late and is very much still in the running.

September 16th, 1882 - Cleveland Blues win National League Pennant
September 16th, 1882 - The Cleveland Blues won their second straight pennant, and they did it by defeating the Boston Red Caps 2 games in a row.
In the American Association, Louisville has won 6 games in a row, all 6 victories against the formerly surging Cincinnati Red Stockings. Louisville's magic number is now 12, and Pittsburgh is 3 1/2 games back. Thus far Louisville has proven they can win without Harry McCafferty, as they have gone 6-2 without him. |
