You'll realize your old when players of your youth start becoming MGR's like Ozzie Guillen, Joe Girardi and even Gabe Kapler. Kapler is only 6 months older then me.

Or when players of your youth have kids playing now. Like Travis (son of Jeff) Shaw or Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Agreed. I can't remember the first time this happened to me, and I also can't remember the first time I saw the offspring of a player I remember from childhood as per the comment below yours. I did watch Robbie Alomar up close, and technically Sandy Alomar Sr. was playing when I started watching baseball, but I don't remember him. I'm sorry to hear about your sister.

Looks like I've above average, at 47.

Started with iootp on my phone a few years ago then into OOTP about 4 years ago.

The Old Days of Simulation Baseball

Here is my story. I will be 69 come next week. Am I the oldest on the boards?
Seems like yesterday... but lets go back in time.. Nov 1963 . I was mesmerized by the ad they always ran in Baseball Digest. "Baseball comes alive on your Tabletop" etc etc. My Dad was fascinated as well.
He ordered us the Stratomatic starter kit. I think it included 6 teams of your choice. Paper stock, one sided cards in those days.
I was like Ralphie in the movie "A Christmas Story" waiting for his secret decoder pin to come in the mail!. Finally the box arrived. Oh Joy!.. My task was to open it and read the directions which I did, putting all thought of homework aside... after all this was important stuff.. Baseball on my living room table.. Willie Mays would be fielding, Maury Wills stealing base after base.. Sandy Koufax mowing down batter after batter!
That week Kennedy was killed.. That weekend my Dad said "Ok, let's get away from the TV and play Strat. My brother , Dad and myself formed a 3 team league. My brother had the Dodgers, I had the Giants and my Dad took the Reds. No trading... ever!.. We played a 30 game schedule. I started doing the records by hand of course. Not even a calculator in those days. All the basics, Avg, runs, rbi, Dbls Triples Homers and Wins Loses, K's ERA etc.
Notebook style.. all meticulously done to cherish forever!. Ok skipping a few months, naturally in the Spring totally hooked ordered the entire new set of cards.. and the cycle started again.. Back in the 70s I was still playing, mostly solitaire , keeping records of course. A thought came to me.. "Gee, someday with this new computer stuff, I bet they will have this for computers and you will even be able to see Lou Gehrig running around the bases. So I've been simming for 55 years now!!
Ok.. in ending I want to say, I have always had that boyhood urge each Spring... and with OOTP throughout the last 12 years or so, those feelings have only increased.. I can remain a young boy at heart! Thank you Mark and Team!

Ormandbeach. Loved your writeup, you've got a decade on me but you are not the oldest on these boards my friend. Many of us can identify with card-based Strat, or other great games like "Challenge the Yankees, APBA, ALL Star Baseball etc
Sports sim games in the digital age , double the pleasure double the fun, as the old tv commercial would say.....

But then that's me. I'm weird.
I agree with you Raccoon man.
most of the young kids are playing MLB The Show
The adults play OOTP!

Great read, Ormondbeachdan! I also was a Strat-O-Matic guy growing up -- it was so much fun and OOTP is keeping me young, too. You've got me by more than twenty years (I'll be 47 in 3 weeks) but we're all like kids in a candy store w/ OOTP!

I enjoy hearing peoples' stories.

MLB The Show = Junk Food (satisfies a craving but doesn't last)

OOTP = Your Favourite Meal (you can never get enough of it)

I am 53, 54 in June. I play both OOTP and MLB The Show. I like the Road to the Show and Franchise modes, keeps me feeling young (most of the time!) and you have to love the graphics. Looking forward to both this year of course.

I first came to baseball in 1985, watching Joe Garagiola and Vin Scully on NBC's Game of the Week. Yes... just one game televised you youngsters.

I got hooked on (of all things) the 1985 Cardinal top of the order stealing bases and the interplay between runner, pitcher, catcher and bench. This was Saturdays when I was in the US Navy. It dawned on me that maybe there is a lot more to this game than meets the eye... (!)
Still hooked.

Jus turned 52 and though based in the UK, watched WOR and WGN as a kid and loved the Mets and Cubs as a result and settled on the Mets. I can remember listening to Armed Forces Radio when the Dodgers beat the '88 Mets and was devastated. Ever since then wanted to GM my own team. especially the Mets as I felt they should have ruled for 10 years.

Never played Stratomatic but did get Statis Pro and Baseball Strategy as board games in the UK and later loved Earl Weaver, Tony LaRussa and the game I consider the distant relative of OOTP...Front Page Sports Baseball which was way ahead of it's time.

I started OOTP in my 30s and am in my third decade! Played since OOTP2 and have seen this grow, it keeps me young at heart!
