The Brewers loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first. Briggs then beat out a double play grounder to pick up the game-tying RBI. Theobald gave the Brewers the lead with an RBI single. Conigliaro added a 2-run double but injured his foot and had to leave the game. The final game in the Bronx against the Yankees. The Rangers are 50-82 on the season but are a combined 16-7 against the Red Sox and Yankees combined.

The Royals are just 3 games behind the first place White Sox in the AL West but their chances of overtaking Chicago just took a huge hit. Kansas City has lost All Star SP Paul Splittorff for the rest of the season because of a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. He will miss anywhere from 12-13 months, meaning he will miss most if not all of the 1973 season as well.

The San Diego Padres are the first National League team to be mathematically eliminated from the 1972 post season.
